[Q] French XEF Firmware outdated? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
After hours of searching / googling i've decided to ask my question here as im stuck (Im also a noob).
I received my international version GT-i9300 (XEF) which i have found to be 'French' version. Samsung Zeis amd Sammobile says the firmware is up to date PDA:LFB/PHONE:LFB/CSC:LF1 (XEF)
But i'm having the 'crackling' noise when listening to music problem. When the screen is off, i get a random crackle / static noise, which, from what i read, this problem was addressed? (something to do with a power saving feature not supplying enough power to the DAC or something like that...). Its not the end of the world, but its pretty distracting when your trying to listen to music.
Is the French firmware outdated? Has this problem already been fixed? Should i flash it with my local firmware (Australia XSA) or should i just wait for the JB update, proported to be released in October?
Thanks for any help you can give!

But thats what im saying, Keis is telling me it IS updated!? Why is the french firmware (XEF) so old?

OK so im thinking i might just flash this phone to my local country firmware, being australia (XSA i assume), but i have no idea what im doing...I read the sticky instructions on using odin to flash, it seems straight forward, but i dont know which firmware to use.
Can i use the latest firware on sammobile, or do i have to flash in order? (there are 3 firmwares, ALE6, ALF2 and BLH2 on sammobile for Australia XSA).
Also if i flash the phone, will it recieve updates as normal? I saw some guy showing how to reset the flash counter and was wondering if i'm going to mess up future updates if i flash it manually...
Sorry for the noob questions, im totally lost...wishing i had of just bought one locally :crying:
Thanks for any help!

You can flash any whole firmware (no OTA files).
If it is a normal release then you should get normal updates.
You will need to use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter.
Buying locally would have got you updates but currently Aus roms are locking the dock icons, so be glad you don't have one of those.

Thanks for the info Kangburra!
I'm new to Andriod flashing, this sounds a bit intense (resetting the counter / triangle away), i think maybe ill just wait for a french update, however the hell long thats going to be... If it wasnt for that static noise with music, i would have given this phone 10 out of 10..
CS

Since you didn't buy it locally, you have no warranty anyway, so what exactly are you worried about resetting the flash counters for?
Whilst Odin may initially seem intimidating it is really quite simple. If you really want an aussie firmware flash the LH2 you mentioned (putting the file in the PDA section of odin). Though you might as well just flash LI5 (latest JB leak )

You don't need to Triangle away, and it is only another app to install, if you are happy to follow the ODIN instructions you will be fine.
I agree with above, try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835931

Thanks for the info guys.
Im mainly concerned about getting myself into a whole bunch of [email protected] I agree, ODIN looks easy enough. But rooting, triangle away, etc. I can see its going to get complicated and ill be stumbling in the dark trying to work it out...Dont want to stuff up a 500 dollar phone is what im worried about...
I'd assume this french firmware will get JB at some stage, i could probably just wait for it i guess..

Ok another noob question...sorry about this...if i was going to flash to JB (with the link provided, thank you for that btw), do i just flash with the latest version, or do i need to flash sequentially from oldest to newest, because i noticed the OP in that thread has a bunch of older revisions in his post.

So i downloaded that JB firmware and updated the phone and it exploded! Ha. Seriously, once you know what file to use, its quite easy.
Been listening to music last 10 mins approx and havent heard the original static / crackle problem i was having with the outdated french firmware. I did noticed though that it still says XEF in Kies though. Does that matter? Probably not...
EDIT: also, Kies is telling my device does not support upgrading via Kies....does this mean i have to manually upgrade my phone whenever there is an update...?
Thanks for your help everyone, i appreciate it!

You installed a rom which will only be released in a month approximately (you're on a leaked version) so of course Kies doesn't know what to do with you =)
Flashing through Odin is always the fasted method as you've seen, so I'd recommend sticking with it anyway.
(Actually Kies uses the same method to update your device, just dumbed down without any options)

Ah k so Keis might just start working once the firmware has been released. Only reason i keep going on about Keis is that i'm probably not going to notice updates if a program doesnt tell me. Im not around these parts much Would be nice to have Keis auto-update. Oh well, shouldnt have to worry for 6 months now anyway lol

Hi Guys, my phone has: PDA: KG1 / PHONE: KG1 / CSC: KG2 (XEF)
ANDROID VERSION: 2.3.3
KERNEL VERSION: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKG1-CLlabeltest_I9100XWKG1
my problem is when i run the software update of the phone it say that "NO UPDATE AVAILABLE" I try and with the kies software but tha same.
And know tha 2.3.4 came before a long time ago, and mine is at 2.3.3!!!
What do you suggest me to do?!?!?! to wait if my phone sometime will update?! or to do something else to get the official updates!!!
Thanks.
Well... if what you are talking about are the OTA updates on the phone... then its possible that it wont work because of your carrier, have you tried Kies?... and of course you could always use Odin

sorry about the question what is odin?!?!?! ( i am new with android phones)
Well I don't know about what carrier or what country we are talking about. But here in Denmark we had 2.3.4 from KI4 undtil recently where they updated us to 2.3.5 KI8... But it sounds a little extreme for you to be stuck on 2.3.3

What if you don't get an update? I was a stubborn man with the same issue, but I broke when there was no update for my country officially, now if I could do that you also could, rather should update to 2.3.5. I hope you know the Odin method. And of course it's a worth upgrade.
Then install CM7. It's 2.3.7. I think you're big enough to take this decision yourself. If you're not, do a NAND backup, try a ROM and if you don't like it, you revert to your original one.
P.S.: those numbers don't worth much... you won't see a difference.

[Q] galaxy s2 wont update

Hi i bought a new samsung galaxy s2 the other day and immediately checked for updates ota. it said an update was available, so i downloaded it and clicked install. the phone rebooted and began updating but once it got to 14 percent it stopped, rebooted then said update was unsuccessful. So i connected to kies and it told me my phone wasnt compatible for updates via kies. any ideas?
Kies is useless, if you really want to update you can use odin yourself... up to you and voids warranty
Try uninstalling and reinstalling but too be honest, forget kies...
hmm. ok. any ideas on why the ota update stops at 14 percent? im on stock 2.3.4 and not rooted.
yes, because kies is rubbish....
settings - about phone - update... Over The Air update is probably not available lol ...
With odin you can flash stock updates... really simple, but get used to the phone and if you want to take the leap, its not difficult but do plenty of reading, it can a bit daunting initially...
Is there anything wrong with your phone or just hungry for the latest version?
OTA is not in use/working for many yet but is supposed to be working when ICS is released .

You said you're in the US? Then there isn't a stock ROM for the i9100 for your region. I'm in the US too. You should be able to use any from Intratech's official firmware thread just fine. I flashed from XWKE7 for the UK (2.3.3), that came with the phone, to XXKI3 for Poland (2.3.5). Haven't found a need to upgrade beyond that yet, but there are newer versions available.

As previously suggested, try other firmware. Forget Kies, its crap and only check for updates for your specific firmware, not elsewhere.
Try the link above i posted or http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300here for newer releases.
Just follow the guide by Intratech (he also has some official firmware) for flashing with Odin. Could not be simpler. Just backup anything to PC before hand, and then follow instructions exactly.

really appreciate your help with this but just have a couple more questions
i assume that with odin i can flash any of the firmwares and it dosent matter that my phone is locked to orange (well i believe it is). The phone itself has no orange branding or apps installed.
The other thing i am not sure about is which firmware i should use for a uk handset on orange. If i use a generic firmware will that cause problems with the radio's etc?
The other thing is how do i know what the latest is...i mean i might already have it on my device....it says i have 4.04 on it but are there various versions of this?
Sorry if it seems im being lazy about this but just want to be sure i am using the right one.

I believe so, should be same as SGS2. Phone lock should be "sim" lock not locked bootloader.
You can flash the modem or kernel as individual packages if need be.
In phone dialer, *#1234#
Ie. Firmware ending in LE7 is older than LE8
Don't forget to backup anything important to PC first. Best to factory reset first in recovery and then immediately boot into download mode to flash. Follow Intratech guide exactly and shouldn't be a problem.
Just make sure you flash any full package as .tar.md5 file. Zip won't work with Odin.
For thanks if you feel like it

Failed firmware update question on international version

Hello,
I've done some searching and have seen some with the same issue. When I go to update it says:
"Failed to update firmware due to network or server problem. Try update update.. or try using kies."
Message started out of the blue a couple weeks ago.
Kies says I'm up to date. Tried through Mac and PC
Went to recovery and cleared cache and tried again. Saw that advised on another forum. Tried on 3G and different wifi networks. Possibly Samsung server error, but strange it lasted for weeks?
Baseband is I9300BULF1. Not rooted or anything.
This is my first Android. Mainly trying to isolate if an update is available or not and if there is a problem how to resolve.
just wondering if kies is up to date? Worth a check, personally I never use that rubbish, Odin for me!
thanks for reply.
I had checked and made sure Kies was up to date. I mainly use Mac, had just downloaded a version for PC, but made sure was latest version.
From what I see there are different versions based on region, etc.. Not sure if/how to tell what the latest version should be.
Latest firmware to flash is LG9 firmware.
It doesn't matter where you are, you can still flash it.
Go to samfirmware.com and you'll find the latest and you can flash it via Odin, way easier than that ota nonsense.
I've had 6 android phones and never once have I waited for an ota.

Thanks for that link. I set file to download so should be ready by when I get in.
I have this file downloading
"Singapore (StarHub) 2012 July 4.0.4 I9300XXBLG9 I9300OLBBLG2"
From latest search that was the only one I saw with LG9
looking up info on odin as well. Looks like that's PC only program, but no problem.
Going to give this a go tonight.
Thanks
Lg8 is the same but European version I think so depending where you are it may be advisable to flash that, I'm fairly certain lg9 is the Asian version of lg8 so may not have your csc if you aren't Asian?

Yes, good point.
All custom roms are based on lg9 but then again they are all multi csc.
At the end of the day the csc doesn't really matter, its only related to carrier/location based bloat and crapware.

I have the international version. Just saying I'm I'm the USA as something was mentioned on first Page about LG9 and Asian. Browsing from phone now, have to do more research. Still new to droid
It won't do any damage to your phone if it is the intl version, it just may not be optimized for your particular network (HD voice, fast dormancy) and on the other hand it may be just fine.
tbh there is no official firmware for the intl s3 on American networks.
In fact there is a thread here for setting up the intl version on at&t by ceo.mtcl, look it up.
It won't do any harm to your phone tho, I'm in Ireland running a custom rom and its lg9.

[Q] Flash international firmware instead of branded? (Also random reboots)

Greetings!
My mom has a Galaxy S2 which has some rebooting problems (it randomly reboots once or twice a day, and loses a lot of battery as a result?). I am thinking this is because there is a firmware problem (although it could be hardware too).
I wanna try and flash the international samsung firmware on the phone instead of the 3 Denmark (Three) branded one I currently have on, and see if that resolves the problem. I am not sure if I have the right branded firmware either, since I tried to edit the build.prop file when I left and managed to get my device stuck on a bootloop while I was on a 12 hour plane ride (now without music lol), and I flashed the only 3 branded firmware I could find.
So, can I turn this into an "international version"? And why do you think it reboots?
Hi, I don't know about rebooting but your mom phone(battery) has insane fuel gauge chip(everyone has it) that chip takes battery level ... sometimes it adds battery level.
Maybe try to flash xxlsj jb leak ?
Regards,
Paulius

XDA the best
P.S. Correct me if I am wrong
Yes, you can. About the reboots, see if the international firmware helps.
Attached is a picture of how I lose battery, can someone give me a link to the international firmware version? Maybe not the most new one so I can install it and have an OTA update so I know that works. All the CSC codes and stuff makes me confused.
Do you think this is a software or hardware problem?
Also, how strict is Samsung about rooted devices and RMA?
Thank you very much!

here you go.
I've flashed this ROM and still have the fuel gauge issue, It goes up sometimes when I unplug my device
Still, great batt life.

Thank you, but I did not want the "beta" build, I wanted the international ICS build (hopefully the one "before" the latest one, so I could OTA to the latest one to make sure that worked)

This is not that beta.
I was on ICS, tried JB leak and trust me, I'm never going back to that ROM.
Anyways, It's your choice, I just layed it out there for you.
Can I flash it via the stock recovery? Can I revert to ICS or does it patch like bootloader and recovery too?

JB? try Odin.
You can always go back to ICS if you want to.
In all honesty I really just want a firmware version I can flash via stock recovery then update via OTA or KIES. This is my moms phone, I will play around with custom roms and beta releases on my Nexus 4 when it's done being repaired
Actually the major reason is that I do not wanna flash another bootloader and stuff like that if I have to deliver the phone to get repaired. Then it's gonna be a pain to return for repair

ICS 4.0.3 Unbranded is your best bet. Just like a out-of-the-box device ready to get the Jelly bean update via OTA/Kies.
I have downloaded the file from Sammobile, it contains two files:
I9100XWLPG_I9100HTDLP4_I9100NELP4_HOME.tar.md5
SS_DL.dll
Do I flash this via ODIN or what? Don't I need more files for that?
