[Q] SDCard and extSDCard issue with windows - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone encountered/encountering this issue with writing files in SD/ExtSD Card? I'm using CM10 Nightly
Issue: When I create a file using my phone (ex app is ASTRO File Manager) it gets created properly. But when I attach the s3 using usb in my windows laptop, the file is not there. Another example is when I download a video using TubeMate, the file is there and I can play it. But again when I look the file using windows. It's not there. I tried to restart my fone... and finally it was there... but modifying/creating/adding files using the phone is not being recognize REALTIME by windows... how to resolve this?

addition
BTW, when I add/modify files using windows explorer it gets reflected right away in my s3? But it's not the other way around.

[Q] Can I download files directly to my sd card using only my phone?

Must someone use a separate computer to download/extract/transfer a file (RUU, ROM, RADIO, ETC) to thier phone; or, is there an app or something that would allow someone to place the file (zip) onto the root of their sd card, without using a separate computer. I only ask; because I am running windows 7 on my laptop (can't seem to get the correct HTC drivers using windows 7, to recognize my phone), my work computer won't allow me to connect any outside devices, and my desktop is connected to my television (it's hard to fight off all the kids to get access).
It would be great if I could figure out how to download/place/rename the file(s) (zip) directly onto my sd card, using only my phone. Any ideas? I have been searching forums for weeks on end and this is my first post.
Running with:
Thunderbolt (mecha)
Revolutionary
S(security)-Off
Superuser
Clockworkmod Recovery
Fast Boot
Cyanogen Mod
you can basically do all that on your phone.
root explorer (gives you access to look, rename files, delete, copy/paste & search your sd card) & zip viewer (zip program) can do it on the phone. also a file called zip signer is good to have incase you want to sign a file...
phone only
Nice...thank you...why then do all the forums tell u to dowload on a separate computer then transfer? Seems like an unneeded step...

Not able to install apk files

A family member has the Galaxy S3 and it is completely stock, non rooted and so on, and i know the phone does not need to be rooted to install apk files.
The problem is that i have copied over the apk file that i want onto his S3 but his phone, no matter what file explorer you use, just will not see the apk files at all, the fines worked fine on my Sensation and DHD and One X, but i just can not get the phone to see the apk files,
any idea's on what is causing the phone to not see the files?
cheers

you sure they are named as .apk file and not .zip? you should be able to see the filename without the .apk in myfiles for example (myapp.apk will appear as myapp), you will also have to check allow install from unknown sources in the security menu in settings..
yes its named .apk
i have not changed anything about the apk files from installing them on my other phones as i said, the DHD and the Sensation are both rooted but my One X is not rooted and that was able to see the apk file and install it, i seriously have no idea on why the S3 is not seeing them at all and that is after searching online for info
also i have enabled the use on non-market applications to be installed, but that is no use if the phone cant see the .apk files to install it in the first place
How you transferred the file to GS3? Is the file visible when connected to PC?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I connected the S3 to the PC via the USB cable and transferred the apk that way to the SD Card, when the phone is connected to the PC i can see the apk

Are you using the builtin file manager?
If yes open it, press menu softkey, press settings, show hidden files.

getting my files to show hidden files did not work.
what it is that i'm trying to install a game, there is a data folder that has to be transferred onto the phone as well, it goes into the Android\obb folder on the sdcard, i created the folder and copied over the files into the folder, the phone.... using my files, astro or es explorer still will not see that folder i created for the files or the apk file itself that has to be installed for these files to be used.
also i tried it on a friends stock, non-rooted Galaxy S2 and it could see the files and it installed first time with no problems so right now i have no idea on what is going on with the Galaxy S3
Sorted, i know what it was, me being a tit....
when you open astro, it starts off in the SDcard folder... the samsung see's the built in memory as the SDcard.. to see the actual SDcard (the removable one lol) i have to select extSCcard..
Am i a tit or what lol
Cheers for the help anyway guys
much appreciated

Telus One X+ - No image preview?

Hello everyone,
I have a little question. When I connect my phone on my computer and then navigate to a folder with pictures or videos (DCIM for exemple), I don't see any image preview. I tried changing the folder layout, nothing change. I only get Icons. Is it by design or there is something buggy? I tried with 2 different Windows 7 x64 and they both have the same behavior.
I'm on the stock root rom.
Thanks!

I think it is because the folder is located on the external device and maybe windows doesn't have permission to write hidden files for caching.
Just my guess though. Mine don't preview either.

I don't think so since you can have thumbnail without creating a cache file (dynamic thumbnail used in windows temp that is done each time). Also, you can create file on the system so why not?
But I know that this method is very bad (I really don't like it, I prefer by far usb mount storage like a flash drive). Recently, I had to copy over an entire folder. Well, I had to go each folder one by one and inside each because it wouldn't copy over all file or all folder. Even upon entering the folder, some file and folder were missing and I had to browse back...

[Q] Access folder by PC

Hey guys!
I have a problem ...
I use an app for courses (Udemy) and it have the option to download courses for offline watching.
Did it. I can watch the app offline, but wanted to move to the PC. I found the files in the folder:
android / data / com.udemy.android / files / udemy-final-downloads
Within this folder I have several folders, each containing one video of the course. The problem is that when plug the mobile in PC most of the files do not appear.
In short: I can see all the phone but the PC does not appear the most.
I've tried with linux and windows. Already asked to view hidden files and resolves nothing.
Has anyone had similar problem?
Obs.'s Mobile phone is a Moto X.
Thanks Guys!

Move the files or folder to your highest directory. Should be something like /storage/emulated/0. FYI, your device has to be unlocked (meaning PIN or pattern or password or whatever) to open anything on the phone on your PC.

That's weird. How about uploading them to cloud storage, like DropBox or Google Drive?
I tried it too. The files are very big 4.8 GB and always stop. I'll try do it littke files at time.
Send to PC over Bluetooth?
Delete and re-download them to a location of your choosing?
Copy via PC or SDCard
You can locate the folder as you did, thus:
android/data/com.udemy.android/files/udemy-final-downloads
copy it to memory card or flash using otg if your device supported it. Otherwise, you copy it to your PC, I used Ubuntu to copy the folder. Afterwards open and rename each course (file) accordingly, but is a very tiresome task.
Hope this will help.

I have the same problem.
My course has 297 lectures
I could copy only the first 222.
I ran ls -l from terminal as su to check the sequence - they are downloaded in sequence - and I am using the time sequence to rename them in order numerically
How to download Udemy videos and convert it to any formats to play
You can try Bigasoft Video Downloader Pro, it can download udemy videos for free. You can read more from How to Download Udemy Videos Easily with Bigasoft Video Downloader Pro
What protocol are you accessing the files from your PC? Are you using MTP, MSC, etc...?
May i suggest that you install ES File manager, use it's remote manager (which uses ftp) to check if you can see the files.
Personaly for transfering files between my Droid and my PC, because MTP is so utterly slow I use an app called "MTP-alternative" which allow you to tranfer files over USB but uses the Wedav protocol and is really quick. (if it works, bear in mind that when transfering files to your mobile it copy them in /data/local/tmp which gives the impression that the files aren't transfered to your mobile)

Hey, i realize this is very late but i hope my answer will help others. I had to do something simillar and i found a very simple work around. all you have to do is download winrar or any other app that can archive files/directories. Use the app to make an archive of the Final Downloads folder which contains all the other nested folders with the videos in them. Now you can connect your phone to your computer and transfer the .rar or .zip file over and extract it on your desktop.
Thanks for your answer, this is worked for me. The problem is solved now.
