[Q] Confused about how one Android app starts another - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm probably not using the correct terminology here, but sometimes when one app starts another app, the second app seems to exist as its own process, whereas other times it seems only to exist only within the process of the first app. Where this really matters is if I want to switch back and forth between the two apps or, say, to do something completely different and _then_ return to either the first or the second app. For example, if I use Documents to Go to view a .DOC attachment in the Gmail app, Documents to Go launches as a separate app: I can switch between Documents to Go, Gmail, and any other app I have running. It's great! (And it's the behavior I expect.) However, if I instead use Quickoffice to open the .DOC attachment from Gmail, Quickoffice seems to load _within_ the Gmail app: I can't switch back to Gmail from Quickoffice; if I switch to a third app and _then_ try to switch back to Gmail, I get to Quickoffice instead; and if I back-button my way from Quickoffice back to Gmail, I can't get back to Quickoffice anymore. Basically -- rather than existing as a separate app like Documents to Go, Quickoffice seems just to take over the Gmail app.
I assume that there are Android terms to describe the difference between how Quickoffice and Documents to Go behave when called by Gmail, right? Can someone tell me what they are? And is there any way for the user to control this behavior? I'd _really_ like Quickoffice be behave like Documents to Go in this regard when called from within Gmail.
Thanks!
Alan

[Q] Gmail App Missing Attachments

Hey guys, is anyone missing options to include as attachments in the gmail app? The regular mail app has options to include locations, vCards, videos, voice recordings, etc.
i have the attachments option in gmail,
but i don't have as many options as the stock mail app, either.
i would think that the MAIL app simply has all of them as pre-sets, but if you use GMAIL then you can simply navigate to them using the pop-up suggestion of 'file explorer' or any other apps like 'andro-zip' that you have installed (which also popped up in my gmail attachment option)
Yes, that would be a viable option if I wanted to send something like a document, picture, etc. However, it would be nice to have the integration of the vcard, capture picture/video, send GPS coordinates, and other items that are not specific files on my phone.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
good point
although some of those are indeed possible--but strictly from the app in which you would find them (*GPS--Maps app, for example)--
it would indeed be nicer to have just one starting place (gmail) from which all of those could be shared.
I was thinking the functionality was missing, but it seems like it was never implemented? I just looked at my Xoom and it only has my file browser and gallery. I thought my HTC Touch was able to attach these items, but I can't remember as it has been over a year since I have messed with it. Plus it was running some other hero Rom or something like that...

Rearranging bookmarks?

I love the widget but hate the lack of organization. Anyway to rearrange them?
Yeah, I've been wondering the same. Can't figure out how to rearrange them in-browser either...
There are a couple of apps that will let you rearrange bookmarks. I use BookmarksSB
https://market.android.com/details?id=app-com.happydroid.bookmarks
That one force closes upon opening every time.:/(
On the details of that app it says:
Warning: on Android 3.x/Honeycomb, do not use this application if the Google Chrome bookmark synchronization is activated.
Could that be the problem?
No not synced.
Problem may be I have another browser.apk installed. I believe it was ported from the xoom or transformer with the quick controls.
i don't know why the stock browser doesn't let you rearrange bookmarks.. i've been using dolphin, which does let you, and is more user friendly. it also gives you full screen browsing. you could also set the uastring to desktop without having to debug all the time.
Thank you for the App. I was wondering how can i rearrange my bookmarks. Google should have included that within the browser.
Got a questions.
Regarding email app, anyway one know how can you select all emails at one instead of going through all the email to select them?

[Q] Facebook links don't open Facebook app

I'm having a small issue with Facebook on Android. However, I think it's an issue with Android itself, not the app. When I get an email from Facebook, and I click the link, my browser opens and takes to the Facebook page and asks me to log in. Why doesn't it open the link using my Facebook app? It doesn't even ask me which app to use, browser or Facebook (eg. if I have two different gallery apps, and I want to view a picture, it asks me which gallery app to use, and lets me set one as default at the same time). Is there any way to make Facebook links open the Facebook app, instead of launching the browser (or to have it ask me like it does with other apps)? The whole point of the Facebook app is so I don't need to use the browser to view Facebook.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

[Q] Where is the Facebook and Twitter "Integration"?

Just got my new 7" HDX. I really like my Nexus 7 FHD, but I thought I'd give this thing a try. I'm trying to figure out exactly how Amazon defines the terms "seamless" and "integration" w.r.t. Facebook and Twitter.
When I booted up, it asked me for my FB and Twitter credentials. Fair enough. I started with Facebook, put in my username and password, and watched it fail because the "integrated" account had no idea how to handle the Login Authentication. It couldn't even prompt me for the code!
So I went and turned it off (from my N7), and tried again. It worked this time, but there is no Facebook "app" on the device by default. Same with Twitter. Thinking I had to be missing something in the new interface, and wanting to see how the May Day thing worked, I contacted support. I was told, unapologetically, that I needed to download the apps from the app store. So I did. And then I had to login when I started the app! WTF?
I played around in some of the other included apps, thinking maybe the integration was elsewhere. In the Photos app, I was able to sync my FB photos to the device, but only after (you guessed it) logging into Facebook again through the web browser on the device! So far as I can tell, it's syncing my contacts and calendar with Google, but not with Facebook.
So what am I missing here? I don't see anything that comes even close to "seamless" or "integration".
From what I can tell, notifications are integrated from Facebook. When you get a Facebook notification, it shows up in your notifications bar. You can dismiss it, or tap on it and it will take you directly to Facebook in the default browser.
The integration may go deeper than that, but we've only had the thing for 2 days now.
Seamless integration is just a buzzword. It sounds like you might have been a bit iffy about the KF HDX to begin with, so can be easy to find something to get frustrated about.
My wife is on Facebook all the time, and hasn't had any complaints that I know of about the integration or lack thereof.
EDIT: As to the photos, it may be that the photos app does not tap into the system level Facebook integration/login. If that's the case, you're right, it does seem a bit silly.

Stock Email app creating duplicate folders (labels) in Gmail

Hello everyone!
I'm having an issue with the built-in Email app on my RN4X (mido). For some reason it creates duplicated labels (folders) on my Gmail account.
For example, the app creates its own "Sent" folder, which I then see in the Gmail web interface as "/[Imap]/Sent", the same with Trash and few more folders.
Usually with other apps, the workaround was to set an IMAP default prefix - which is [Gmail] in this case, and the mail app realized which folder is which and used the standard ones in Gmail, but the MIUI Email app doesn't seem to "understand" this.
Can someone please enlighten me here? Do you use Gmail with the built-in Email app?
PS: Of course, the simple solution would be to use Gmail app and be done with it, however, I'd like to keep my mail accounts in one app and I don't really like how the Gmail app handles multiple accounts (you can't set it to default into "All Inboxes", etc.). So the built-in app seems fine for this and I don't really like to install yet another app (Outlook, etc.) to use it for something as simple as email.
I'm using the latest update of everything on my phone, so I don't think the issue can be here. But if someone has an older version of an app that should be working, I'm all for it.
Thanks a lot!
