Exactly as the subject states. I get notifications for both, And honestly, the Gmail app sucks anyways, as it doesn't sync with my email for quote awhile.
You can disable your Gmail account from syncing on gmail, but you can't delete it as far as I know. You can also uninstall the app from root explorer, but I don't know the precautions of that since the market depends on a gmail account. It would be safe to backup.

I always thought it was silly myself. I disable Gmail on every android phone and use the stock email app alone.

I agree. The push notification works better than the stock app. I only use gmail, so its not an issue. That's not to say I don't have a hotmail, live, and yahoo email address, just that I only USE gmail.
The gmail app let's you label, archive and choose which folders sync how long. The stock email client doesn't do any of that.

All I can say is the Gmail App is great, however, I have not used the stock samsung email client as the last time I used it, sucked big time, some email clients *old eudora especially when I first got my Samsung Captivate last year* were getting gibberish from sending e-mails. I use MailDroid Pro and Gmail.. Since upgrading to the i777, I am still using maildroid pro and gmail app. I even get gmail messages in maildroid because of the ease of deleting messages I don't want to see!
HTH,
Charlie
personally, i like having separate notifications via separate apps for my exchange email and gmail... it works better for me that way.
Because the gmail app blows away the stock email app when used with gmail... Since I only use gmail, the other email app is one of the first things I nuke.

Really?
Man, I use GMail too, but the app for it sucks for me. It doesn't update everything nearly as quickly as the stock email client.
1. If I delete emails from my inbox (from a computer or something) it takes hours before it shows up in the GMail app, and vice versa as well.
2. It doesn't refresh the emails on launch, it seems to be quite random (and in the range of a few hours late anyway)
I can see how the stars and folder would be nice, though I don't use them. But still, the intense delay in communication really bugs. Or is it just me?

Apparently, it's just you.
Mine updates fine. I use both. The Gmail for the phone stuff and the other for work exchange email.
My gmail app is great as well. it updates quickly. you may want to check your settings.
i agree with the two above me... for gmail, when i read/delete an email from my computer the notification/email is gone from my phone within 5 seconds.
Don't Feed the Trolls!
Both Gmail and Stock email sucks, IMO. :Q
Gmail client
1. The biggest problem is, it only supported gmail. Everyone has several email accounts, don't you ? Then, you would need at least two email clients to read all of them.
2. No pinch zoom. Sometimes, the emails (in HTML format) exceeds the width of display, so you move to the right side to see them.
3. Sync is sometime slow, as indicated by other posts. I have encounter slow sync several times.
4. When composing new emails, it will prompt you matched recipients after you typed few letter. But, I would have to have an option to pick from Contact app.
Stock email
Most of let downs are due to Exchange support
1. In my corporate Exchange, I setup rules so that incoming emails will be moved to various folders. The stock email can only sync Inbox folder. You have to select that folder(e.g. "My other folder"), the email app will then refresh. But, it does not sync, as such, no notifications.
2. No "delete all" in Trash folder
3. In list view (the screen show preview of emails), to delete an emails, you need to press the email and hold it for few seconds. Then you select "delete". This is non-intuitive design. Gmail uses checkbox, and iPhone uses swipe delete.
4. Then, I feel there is "lag" when deleting the emails. Sometime, right after deleting the emails, the email app paused for few seconds before the app became responsive again. It's because the app is trying to refresh with server. But, it should do so in the background process. iOS's email is definitely much more responsive in this regard.
5. Similar to gmail, there is no way to pick recipients from Contact. You have type few letters, then you can pick from matched list. Don't get me wrong, picking from matched list is good. But, sometimes I just cannot recall recipient names. So bringing-up Contact app to pick recipients will definitely help.
How do you disable the gmail account from syncing (in the stand alone gmail app)?

Choosing delete from a context menu is very intuitive; I think what you mean to say is that is it not efficient. To delete multiple emails in a list view, just press MENU, choose DELETE, and then check off as many emails to delete as you'd like.

Just you my friend. I have the opposite issue. The Gmail app gets emails and updates instantaneously and the Samsung client is a slow battery hog.

Well, it's probably me. At first, I did not know press-and-hold will bring up the context menu. That's why I think it's unintuitive.
But, you are right that I also meant that it's not efficient.
Overall, IMO, the Email/Contact/Calendar apps leave much to be desired , comparing to Blackberry's and iOS'.
Crap you guys were right, it was setup to update several hour's away by default, rather than emails 30-minute. But even after activity it wouldn't refresh in the background.
I am really glad I stirred up good conversation here, seeing everyone's points. Thank you all for your replies
Also, no troll here.
anyways, I decided to just get a paid email apparently that is pretty good, so we will see how that goes.
Hey all,
Can't believe I am actually interested in disabling GMail.
But the standard "Mail" app seems to have a nicer UI than the Gmail app. Especially since it has dedicated Gmail settings.
But how do I disable the gmail app (can't be uninstalled...yet)? Obviously without root, and not sure it's worth the trouble to temp root.
It's just that every email received at Gmail gives me two separate notifications...

The best I can think of (without rooting) is turning off notifications for Gmail so you don't get harassed by two alerts.

FWIW, the dedicated Gmail settings in the Sense mail app are POP3 settings. In other words, every email will show up on your phone as unread, even if you have read it on another device or the web interface.

Thanks for this. I did disable notifications for the Gmail app, which worked like a charm.
As to the pop3 mail, I did not get an inbox full of unread mail when I set it up.
Perhaps the Sense mail has been improved? I am familiar with what you are describing, but that is not the behavior I am seeing.

This issue happened for me on my Rezound, so we are talking about the same Sense version. When I set it up, I didn't get an inbox full of unread messages either, but every message I got from then on wouldn't get marked in Sense mail as unread unless I viewed it from within that app. So, for example, I could get a new gmail message in the gmail app/sense mail, and view it in the gmail app/web interface, but even after refreshing the sense mail it still shows up as unread. Eventually I had to remove the gmail account in sense mail and set it up manually as an IMAP.
An HTC rep responded to an email of mine and basically told me that manual IMAP was the only way to get around the issue. But kudos to you if everything is working!
So folx, tell me which one do you prefer and why?
Im currently using Gmail app, but i wanted to ask for your oppinion.. Im in dillema between gmail app and stock email app for @gmail.com mails..
Thanks
In stock email you can attach all types of files. Which is impossible in gmail app that offer to attach only a video or a picture.

i use stock app because of other site's mail account.
but using gmail app seems to be nice, too
stock has support for air view (awesome), multiple accounts (gmail, yahoo, aol, etc), nice widget
Well, one thing that is keeping me off the stock is following :
I have student email on my university... And i merged that with gmail acc, and it is set up on gmail account so when i go compose new on gmail i can choose from which account to send... I cant do that on stock email app
R: Stock e-mail vs Gmail app
I have attached several times non-video, non-photo files, just using total commander as backend.

I don't get much time to play with my phone, but if I had time I'd uninstall that crappy Gmail app.
I can't say a single advantage of it over the stock email app. I like the email sent notification of stock email app if that's an advantage, I like smooth multi touch it provides, I like how the body of an mail is formatted and so on so on...
That update of Gmail app have saved it from at least 10000 uninstallation, if that's the word, Lol.

You've gotta be kidding me right?
Gmail 4.2.1 is the very definition of smoothness.
Stock email app is choppy as hell, even in this monster of fast and smooth phone.
Don't get me wrong, with the new MA5 update, stock email is much smoother than before, but still pales in comparison to Gmail
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Two differences that I know of:
1. The gmail app syncs chats but the stock email app doesn't.
2. The email notification generated by gmail when a user receives a ping when he or she is offline is synced by the gmail app but not by the stock app.

Hi
How to remove or disable gmail app? i dont want to use it
I came from iPhone and i've noticed problems in both apps.
- Gmail: No unified inbox, conversation view can be better (like iOS stock Mail app)
- Mail: No conversation view at all (and it's definitely not a good thing) and no push mail from gmail
In my daily usage i use gmail for the push service and the conversation view. But i think that iOS mail app and Gmail for iOS are better.
I've used all the other mail clients for Android and every app has some problem.

You can use the m.google.com exchange server, although I don't know how much longer that will exist.
I hate the black background on Stock Email, if you driving in car you will have problems to read, that is better on white background wit black fonts like on gmail app! So i would like only getting white background on stock mail app! Everything elese works (but surely, on my HTC ONE X) it`s much smoother! I´m on Omega 11 in moment!

I hate conversation view and that's why I disabled it in Gmail settings, maybe that's why I don't see conversation view in Gmail app as well. How do you enable conversation view in Gmail app?
And the stock email app has an option of conversation view. You can see it by pressing menu. However I don't know what it does as I haven't used it yet.
And the email client in iOS is way better than any Android client I've ever used.

You could use 'negative colours' under Accessibility. It'll make the background white. Just make a shortcut of Accessibility option which is accessible via Post key.
Also you could use the lighter email text mod of Xposed, not bad.

You can attach any file type in gmail.
If you have a file explorer installed, click attach picture, choose your file explorer as the method and then pick the file you want.
A bit dumb that you have to do it that way but it works. Lol.

Is there a way to back the original Motoblur Email client after installing ElmasROM?
I've tried AquaMail, MailDroid, [email protected] Mail, they all don't work completely for me. I can't get Hotmail folders, and they get out of sync with the server. Can't mark msgs as read on server
I like not tracking down a deodexed GB ROM and trying out the email app too!
In addition, NO BLUR APPS ON CM7! this is a 2 almost 3 yr old phone and has had CM7 for ages. This question has been brought up before and answered. Use the search bar, if not on here then on google, yahoo, etc. Search before asking questions like this.

I'm using CM7 mrom (but I don't think, it's important) and K9 mail works quite well using IMAP and hotmail. I have even another account on office365, but in this case, very often, It can't connect to server (not problem in K9 - do the same on PC and live mail)
The stock Samsung email app is OK but robust it is not. If you want more consider AquaMail Pro. Free trial and a few bucks to own. Very good looking and powerful. Keep all of your email addresses in one spot.
I have no connection to the app other than I own and like it.

I agree Aquamail is quite nice IMO. Did not take long for me to get the pro version... For couple bucks it is well worth it.... Knowing also how much work is required to access exchange via ews the app is in fact cheap... Only complain is no sync with Outlook contact and calendar AFAIK.
Thanks for the heads up on this app that deserves it.

Yes, Cloudmagic. I just went through and tried most of them, and Cloudmagic I've been using for about a week. Aquamail did look good, I just didn't have the time to go through and learn all the functionalities of it. I'll probably give it another try once I'm able to spend more time learning it.

Is it only the included mailapp (and calendar) from Samsung that works with the tab after papergarden? I assume you know what I'm talking about, no? On videos from YouTube I believe the widgets covering the calendar and mail widgets are yellow and green.
If third party mail/calendar apps doesn't work together with said widgets, isn't it better to stick with the stock apps?
No way.. Blue mail is the one. They will repond quickly also if you send in ab issue. Plus its works constantly for push on mulitple accounts. Stock for some reason goes to sleep and emails come in up to 1 hour late. I thought google would have fixed the isue from note 3. Not every since they stopped supporting exchange mail settings 2 years ago.

I like mailbox, perfect for me.

It's fairly new but I love it I think it's better than aquamail pro, I have them both downloaded but I think Type Mail is alot faster. Did I mention completely free.
