[Myth or Not]Modem affects the battery life - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys is this true that modem on ur phone also affects the battery life on ur phone ?

I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that it would because different modems affect signal strength and signal strength directly affects battery life.
That's how I see it anyway.
I'm a product of the system I was born to destroy!

No.

Only if it has no signal and is constantly searching i would think but could be wrong!

Yes, it does.
Are we talking about an amount of juice similar to what the screen uses ? Of course not.
But if the modem you're running means the phone is struggling to get/keep a strong connection to a nearby tower or constantly has to search for one, you're going to use more juice.
How much juice ? I'd be surprised if it amounted to more than a few % over a day, but I can't recall anyone on here claiming to have measured it.

Juicedefender with KG3 firmware

I'm having an issue with Juicedefender and that latest KG3 firmware. The problem is that somehow juicedefender keeps the phone wake constantly. It turns the radio on/off but because the phone is wake all the time it the batterylife doesn't improve at all.
Anybody else having this issue?
Not sure if this helps, but, I'm running JD 3.5.8 Beta with KG2 without any issues.
Two schools of thought on JD
One it saves battery posed mainly by newbies .
Two it drains battery posted by very experienced users and devs .
jje
For me it doesn't matter either way. Infact I'm better of without it because JD turns the radio off which means no instant push. I'll see if I can downgrade to KG2 and replicate threw results.

there can be no doubt whatsoever that Juice Defender particulary the paid versions does save battery.

Agreed. How can it not work if it only syncs every 15 minutes or whatever you set. It in no way interferes with my usage either.

Well obviously there is.
Im glad im not loosing my mind also here, but im on a SGS 4G with the beta version of Juice Defender Ultimate, and it also will wake itself up every few minutes, screen on and everything. That alone is taking up a lot of unessesary battery drain.
Does anyone have an update here?

Use better battery stats to identify the applications which are draining battery for you instead of using jd.

This is correct, get rid of JD it drains more battery than it saves and that is fact.
That's a bold statement, and not true in my case. Why do you think that?

Best radio for CM7?

hey guys, I'm running CM7 and I have tested several different radios and they were all pretty bad. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should use? Thanks!
Define "bad."
Speed test are not always accurate, if that's what you're getting at.
Used mr2 and was good. Every upgrade seems to be better. And the newest 802 is ridiculously fast with nice switchovers between Gs and no issues.
I used 2.5 when I was running AO5PTH3ORY... it worked great. I had no issues connecting to 3g and 4g.
+1 802 working great for me. I've been running DroidTh3ory's AO5P roms, based on cm7.

Sorry, by bad i meant terrible battery life. Maybe its my area. No matter what radio I have ever used my 4g and 3g would always switch back and forth and I think that drains battery pretty quick..

Try recalibrating your battery if you have not. I would also stay off LTE as much as possible unless you need it. LTE just drains your battery like a thirsty man does a glass of water.

Wifi sleep policy?

Is there battery saving by enabling wifi sleep policy when screen is off? Seems to me it should but I would think ROMs such as Unnamed and SHOstock would have it set that way by default if it was..

This actually belongs under the Q & A section...
However to answer your questions... Setting it to never when plugged in is a good idea. it'll make it so your WiFi only suspends and turns off the radio when the screen is off and running off the battery.
Our device's wifi standby power drain is so low and wifi uses so much less power to transfer data in the background than the cell radio that leaving wifi always on saves battery.
This isn't 2009 when wifi chips hogged power just by being turned on - the BCM4330 has been found in many phones since early-mid 2011. (The BCM4329 eats a lot more power.)
Now in the case of UCKK6 firmwares, the wifi chip seems to be running broken firmware that causes it to wake up the CPU all the time - but that's just UCKK6. On a non-broken firmware like UCKH7, XWKL1, or XWLA4, leaving the wifi chip always on will consume insignificant power when not connected to wifi, and save power when connected.

Interesting, have many UCKK6 users suffering battery drain problems noticed a big difference in battery life after flashing
UCKH7, XWKL1, or XWLA4?
I'd most certainly give it a try if others had success going this route..

If you're suffering any battery drain that involves high Android OS battery percentages (70%+) when wifi is on - Any of those three firmwares should entail significant improvement.

yes, I was going that way but hellraised ROMs don't seem to work with passwords which I need for my work. I actually believe there is something wrong with the phone itself and not the firmware. Getting ready to post a wireshark and dmesg on another thread to see what others think. I'm out of warranty, so I'm stuck with it (careful buying refurbished phones from at&t).

Really poor battery life / phones heating up

Hello,
Well I've got really bad battery life. I tried calibration but it hasn't worked. Does anyone know how I can locate the source of the problem?

You have the screen on permanently.... it is THE largest user of battery in a phone, always. And OLED screens when displaying bright and light images use masses of juice.
And your phone never sleeps.
No idea what the hell you are doing, but it isn't a video player... it's a phone.
The image tells me your Display is always on and it isnt in sleep mode.
Did you play some games and listen to music ?

Hi guys,
Thanks for your replies. Thing is, when using the phone, even when doing simple things, the battery decreases drastically faster than before. I am also using a extended battery.
Are there any other things, apart from brightness and turning off Wifi, GPS, that I can do to improve battery life?

No... if you use the phone with the screen on for 3 hours solid.
And I agree, the screen was on the majority of the time but still, the battery life is decreasing more than before
Use the app Better Battery Stats to see if your phone has any other background processes running aside from what you expect it to. Uninstall/disable the offending apps then try to do your thing again.
Keep in mind as well that ICS uses more battery in general vs Gingerbread though, so that's another factor.
You can try flashing modem for your region, it could fix your heating issue.
I use mobile Odin to flash modem from ROM.

It's getting hot and draining because of the screen on time, not the ROM.
The screen uses the same power irrespective of the ROM. Only brightness and screen content will affect it.
Download "Watchdog Task Manager Lite" turn on the monitoring and wait and check the stats, if you have an app that is misbehaving, un-install it.
Most battery issues are due to that.
Hope it helps.
Flash modem from your region, means the version of modem that came when you bought the phone.
Example, when I'm on stock ics / cm9 it gets real hot near camera when I use edge.
Flashing my GB modem fixes that issue.
Also it's easier to flash what you have already used instead of finding the correct one.

I see your image shown that your device has been froze somer times. Maybe you should try changing the kernel. Hope can fix your problem.
Have you 3 not read any of the above? Look at the screenshot. It's screaming the reason at you. Nothing stops the display consuming power and this big one really uses power.

Poor battery because its awake
you get poor battery life because as you can see on the graph, the phone has been awake all the time as well as the screen, the screen is a big battery leecher, when i first got my phone and i used it for like 2 hours with no apps, the screen drawed almost 40% battery life, so if you want to increase battery life i suggest you to change your settings so your screen turns off automatically

[Q] Which Modem/RIL/ROM combination is most stable for travelling?

I will be traveling soon. I have the JellyBean leak by izap on my phone right now... The battery life is somewhat ok, but I have network issues with it sometimes. People can't get to me even when my phone shows full signal strength. Therefore, I would like to know if there is a Modem/Ril/Rom combination that features stability and is most suitable for making and receiving calls internationally. It would also be good if the combination isn't a battery sucker while searching for network while not in range.(Because this seems to be an issue with many people :-/ )
While traveling these are my top requirements from the GS2:
Stability- no SoD or incompatibility with networks abroad.
Battery life- no battery drain while it isn't being used
GPS- quick locks in remote areas (I already seem to have a solution for this; but haven't tested it yet)
Camera- no pink spot or noise (Could you also recommend a good camera firmware for Fujitsu M5MOLS that fixes FPS issues and pink spot? -I've tried solution in every Camera issue thread I could find on the forum, but I still get pink spot)
Thanks! I'm looking forward to your replies! :fingers-crossed:
Just in case this question isn't in compliance with the forum rules, then I'll be sorry and the Mods can move it/delete it.

To be honest your expectations are too high.Your wanting what everyone on here wants, and it doesnt exist. This is why were all tinkering with roms.
In some of requirements, while one thing improves, another will diminish i.e battery life.
I currently use rooted GB stock, stripped down with all the crap removed.I used to use nelp3 modem(gave best signal),but according to callers, speech was choppy.
I'm on NeatRom Lite 4.0 (JB leak), and see in better battery stats that "No or unknown signal" is 99.3%, and I have been in areas with good reception all day, so something is not right with the LS6 modem here in Norway. And I'm not sure if there is any other modem/ril for JB leak?
As for stability and battery time, CM9 stable worked great for me, so maybe have a look at that? With litle use, batterydrain where less than 10% pr 24hour on stock battery...

You can use other modems for Leaked jb but not other rils.
Leave ther ril alone and change the modem. Read through the thread for information how to change modems.
Will it not make phone reception worse if ril is not matched to modem?

No, Modem will reception will be improved somewhat but not 100 % because the mismatch.
Before the ril modem relationship was discovered people use to change modems with out any problems whatsoever.

I see in here that I should be using a XW modem, and not the XX in the leaked jb rom, so I better try another modem and see how it works out.
@jj_95nano You should probably have a look at the modems for the region you are travelling (2 first letters), but as that thread has not been updated since summer, I don't know if theire recommended modems are still valid...
You could also maybe check the signal strength of your provider on where your going.
I went on holiday recently where the tmobile reception was crap, and vodafone was a lot better.
*gets into a dilemma*
Just flashed the latest stock ICS 4.0.4 for my region... There are many bugs and FCs... I wanna flash GB, but the GB for my region is infamous for its battery drain. I guess I'll keep CWM Backups of different ROMs and try them out when I'm on the go. :-/
Depends where your going ^^
If I was taking my S2 over seas, I'd get a sim card for that region (could prob get one prior to travel), leave a redirect to no. on my voicemail. Then I would get a cwm flashable modem for the region & install it on the plane to destination. Rom wise, MIUI gb/ics - would be your best bet... everything works out of the box. Stay away from JB, unless you have a laptop handy, then it wouldn't really matter

Okay.. So I'm downloading MIUI and I have some modems of the places I'm gonna go to. The only problem is everytime I flash a modem there will be a Modem+RIL mismatch... But actually to solve that I can flash only one modem for the country I'll be in the longest. Let's see how it goes!

Yep I'm on a plan with international roaming... I finally got MIUI ICS and NeatROM Lite dual booted. The modems on the ROMs are matching with RIL and don't seem to be draining battery, so I think I'll stick to these.
