SMS Backup & Restore problem - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, i have been using sms Backup & Restore for a while now since i have been swapping a lot of roms and i wanted to keep my smses safe with this program. It has been working flawlessly until now. I flashed rgui miui b9 and when i tried to restore my smses i got my conversations split in two. Its not like i have my Messages in two times Its Just that they are split. I am uploading an ss to let you get what im saying.

you mean to say its not in threaded view right? some jb roms are having this threaded sms view issues.

Ics based :-\
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

i think thats relevant with miui. i used miui on my old galaxy sl. same issue happened to me. the solution is not certain but you can try changing your contact number , add the country code the numbers and restore your smses again. let me know its worked or not.
Sorry for my English.

You mean add the full Number on the selected Contact? The Number is 12345 and i added +30 on front of it. Still no luck any more ideas?

[Q] sms time

Hi guy can someone help me im new to the world of android have the sgs2 rooted etc but can someone tell how to get your sms time as the sent time not the recived it is one of the little pet hate about the phone, have had a look and cant see anything about a fix or is this standered with all android ???
What are you reffering to? The situation when you send a sms and the other part has the phone off and the sms is resent at an interval of time like 1h,6h,1day,1week and maximum? Or are you reffering to schedule sms timer?
In the first case, I think there is no option for that...at least I didn't find it(although I miss it).
In the second case, you solve the problem by installing an app like sms scheduler etc.

Stock SMS/MMS App Crashing After Log Restore

I've always had an issue when moving from one rom to another. Essentially I backup my close to 10,000 sms messages, and when I install the new rom attempt to restore them via SMS Backup and Restore app. After doing so it results in the stock messaging app becoming unusable and crashes, which results in lost service and a slew of other problems. As of late I started freezing the stock messaging app with TB and use Go SMS instead, but now I can't receive MMS. Anybody have a sure fire solution? Thanks
No one wants to help? I'd really appreciate some input. Thanks

I have over 10k messages I use to restore (SMS Backup & Restore) without problems, gone through basically every rom you can think of.
And yes I also use GoSms, cause after 1k messages the stock SMS decides it wants to lag like crazy.
Does the stock messaging app crash even when you're not using it? (When you leave it unfrozen)
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
Yes it crashes regardless. I wouldn't mind if I could leave it alone and not worry about it, but whenever I boot the phone back up and its unfrozen it crashes my phone and it loses signal. Miui is the only rom this didn't happen to, which is why I'm still using it.

Still looking for a solution. The newer version of backup and restore lets you restore message from a certain date on, but not before that date. I feel like if I restored it in two stages with a reboot in between it would have any issues, but I have yet to find a simple method of doing so.

I was having this same issue after restoring my SMS/MMS messages. Then I used SMS Backup + to back them all up to my gmail account. After that I wiped them all out from my phone, and the stock app was still crashing, so I started using GO SMS again. A couple days later, the stock app just started working by itself all of a sudden when I got a notification for an SMS message in my status bar. I'm not sure what fixed it.

Did you try clearing the sms cache through manage apps?? sometimes doing this helps clear up glitches, I did this when I had the Phantom VM bug. not sure if it will work for this but its worth a shot.
Hope this helps
Thanks for all the input guys. I was able to restore my messages in 4 chunks. Worked great, just took forever. Thanks

Why is MMS quality so different from iPhone?

Hi guys,
I'm new here and have been looking around to try and get my question answered but haven't quite had any luck.
I'm made the move from iPhone to Android and absolutely loving it. I'm sure we're all aware of the MMS issue? I have a couple of questions regarding this.
1) When sending MMS's from iPhone to iPhone and iPhone to Android, the picture quality is obviously much much better. Why is this? Why the limitations? It's definitely not the carrier.
2) I'm aware of Go SMS and all those 3rd party apps, but is there a mod or "fix" to the resolve the issue? I'm currently using LiquidSmooth RC7 and love the jelly bean messages app.
Apologies for the long post!!!
Thanks

What messaging app are you using?
When i first made the move from iphone to android I was using Go sms and Hancent. Both had this problem but after switching back to the stock messaging app, havent had the problem.
Using Liquid Smooth ROM which has stock jelly bean messaging app.
I stuck my sim in my iPhone again and a friends Windows phone and MMS that are sent are way better quality. Only on Android it's shocking... just curious as to why exactly.

Hmmm that could be the reason why. Try using Stock SMS if you can. if not then I'm out of ideas.
Yeah already tried that. Still nothing. Apparently Cyanogen Mod has a settings menu where u can change the outgoing MMS size. I'm sure there's something in the code that can be changed but not sure where. Will wait for CM10 and see if that changes anything.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Need to change the compression level of the MMS i guess.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Yeah, would be good if there was an option to set the limit. At the moment it's at like 40-60kb. Ridiculous. All other phones have a much higher size.
Sent from my GT-I9300
Yeah its a shame really. Only working solution I've seen is to tell go sms to preserve image quality and stop compression.

Actually it is the carrier, when you are sent an MMS, the carrier sends you a SMS telling you to get it.
Your phone then connects to their server and passes a user agent string. The carrier then works out what's best to give you.
If they haven't got around to adding you user agent, often they go for worst case scenario.
Some apps allow you to have a custom user agent (messaging, not web) which should help.
The other possibility is the iPhones were using iMessage instead.
+1 for iMessage. Why use other between two iDevice?

Op what country are you from mate? Regardless of what other people say it is true MMS on android is shocking so i use whatsapp it is a multi platform app and you can send 12sec vids and pictures via your data and it doesn't cost you anything extra. Only costs a few kbs of your data. You can also use kik. But i wish the mms quailty was better to be honest.
I don't see how its the carrier when the same carrier on other phones don't have an issue.
I'm from Australia mate. Yeah started using watsapp a while ago then deleted it.. but other people need to be on it too don't they?

Yes.
But it still might be the carrier, since iPhone to iPhone probably doesn't send mms, but uses imessage instead. That's why there is no limitations in picture size.
I personally prefer using Line. It's free (whatsapp costs 1.99 USD a year for "server costs")
iPhone to iPhone worked even before iMessage was out. Pics that were sent were delivered in good quality.
I've found my solution for the time being. Facebook messenger has added SMS/MMS threading into its app now. Very seamless and convenient. I've tested sending MMS to phone numbers without them having a Facebook account (or not being Facebook friends) and the pics get delivered in great quality.
Thank u all for your suggestions

Contacts & dialer no longer integrated in jb

Since upgrading my phone to the stock jelly bean firmware (rooted) I've noticed one rather annoying bug. When someone rings me, the phone no longer
displays their name & picture - just the number. Exactly as if they were not in my contacts.
But they are.
I also noticed that the sms messaging app want integrating with contacts anymore. I solved this by installing a new app (handcent), but i don't really want to have to install a new dialer.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix?

I'm on LJ4 and have the contacts photo showing up when called...
To clarify, the dialer itself is fine - when I'm dialing, it can find my contacts.
It's when I get a phone call. It displays the number, but didn't associate it in any way with any of my contacts.

Im in lj5 and everything works here. Probably you have duplicate contacts somewere.

yeh duplicate contacts or do a wipe and root it with a decent rom
Am rooted, but want to stay close to stock. Well check to see if there are dupe contacts. Thanks.

You have to wait 1 or 2 seconds for the name to show... this happens to me sometimes... not all the time... and not with every contact... but eventually it will show...
It's never shown yet - even after a few minutes.
It does look like a contacts issue. Even I look in the contacts app, there are no duplicates. However, when I try and update a contract from a phone number, it lists a number of extra contacts - including plenty of duplicates.
Not sure how to access these extra contacts normally though...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I think these extra contacts may have been added by syncing Google+ contacts. I actually switched it off fairly early on, but it seems to have corrupted my contacts now...
Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Removing the relevant gmail account from my phone & then re-adding it appears to have fixed the problem

[SOLVED] SMS counter with contacts

Hey guys, guess I have a question:
Is there a sms counter that shows the number of sent messages for each contact?
On roms like cyanogenmod with that stock android messaging app it's like that:
Darth Vader (578)

Now on our stock sony rom, there's no counter. Maybe I could edit the apk or is there another app from the playstore that counts my messages for each contact?
Thanks in advance!
I searched for such a thing but I couldn't find a counter for each contact.. I found a normal counters for the whole SMSs
If u find a solution or alternatives I wish u can PM dude.. Good luck

Yes, I'm using "SMS Counter" at the moment and it's very good! But it just informs about all sms, sms in one month, sms per week, sms per day. But not for every contact
I hope somebody knows how to get an app like that
By the way I've tried to install the stock messaging app, but it just hangs after opening the app, because I have all my old messages. Maybe a way to fix that?

Sorry to interrupt. I had found such an app. It showed graphical representation of whom called and whom messaged and how many times. U could set an interval to it like u want statistics of one month, one day, one year. I ll just link you once i find it. Coz i used it almost 5 months ago when i was on stock non rooted..
I ll link here once i find
Btw mihahn used ur tutorial to unlock bootloader of my arc s. Really wonderful. Thanks a ton

Hmmm...install SMS Backup & Restore from Playstore....use it to backup all your sms first....
then using Root Explorer go to....
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
delete....
1.mmssms.db
2.mmssms.db-journal
or copy it into your sd card in-case there a problem while restoring sms using SMS Backup & Restore...
once delete or copy, boot your phone....after reboot open stock messaging app....it should be empty...setup all the necessary setting on messaging app first then use SMS Backup & Restore to restore you backup sms....if somehow there a problem after restoring....then use copy and paste back those files above to the same folder with permission (rw-rw-----) then reboot....
Thank you both! Will try both methods, second would be better because I like the stock app
I've tried the method by just wiping data and restoring it but after reboot I got the message "2387 new messages by ..." and if I open it's just stuck there... Hope with deleting the data base it could work :good:
Sent from my SK17i running stock ics (.587)
Okay so now I nearly fixed it:
1. Backup all messages using SMS Backup + Restore
2. Push MMS.apk to /system/app/ and set permissions
3. Reboot
4. Sms app has problems, doesn't work anymore
5. Delete everything in /data/data/com.android.mms/databases/ (two files were in there)
6. Reboot again
7. Everything worked, messages are still there, no need to restore again
Only problem: the date is wrong in the new messaging app (01.01.1970, 01:00), looking for a way to fix that
Thank you both guys! Thank you very much :good:

Yes the other app is great, too, but better would be the stock messaging app, because nobody knows where my data goes with a third party app. And it has some ads and automatically creates some shortcuts and boookmarks on my device. That's not really good
Just checked it: the problem about the date is not because of the backup app, it's because of the messaging app

Yes only problem is I can't set the option to view the date when it was sent instead of the date when I received it ( it shows 01.01.1970, 01:01 for every message I received), but that's not a big problem. So it's solved now
