Hi. Okay what happened was I got this phone last week. In my country we have a 7 day replacement and 1 year warranty policy. During that 7 day replacement I noticed problems with blue tooth so I returned the phone yesterday and switched it for this phone that I have now. I noticed that specially when downloading big apps from the market my phone tends to run warm, a lot warmer than the last s3 I had. Using battery monitor widget my batt temp was 50 celcius max and using system tuner my cpu temp was 60 celcius max. Is there something wrong with my phone or is it really just that some devices run hotter than others?

its normal buddy, mine rise for 50 also when i'm at my home backyard. it rises for 50 degrees for only about 20minutes and i think its because of the warm weather here in our country. at office where its always cold, i do download 1gb of sd card files for games without the phone/battery temperature rising for more than 43.
just monitor the temperature, if it reaches 45 more then make it cool first before using it again. its still a phone, no fan attached not like personal computers so our only friend is cold weather/place.

Even tho Skimminstones' reply was funny as hell ....
49 *is* pretty damn hot. Anything over 40 and I start to worry a bit, which does happen occasionally with some kernel betas, especially early on after that initial flash/till you do a couple of charge/discharge/reboot cycles. Running a kernel script before you flash the kernel tends to make this less of a problem I've found.
I'm running an early (stable) version of Siyah and I find the average temp of the device with light/no use is 23-25, moderate use is 25-27, 27-31 with heavy use (all dependant on ambient temp), and it sometimes gets up to 36-37 when charging, more so when the battery has less charge (say less than 40% or so). The temperature gradually drops as the battery charges & returns to "normal".
Without knowing what your setup is (i.e kernel, rom, etc), its hard to say what might be causing this.
But as far as I'm concerned, 49 is *not* normal.

You mean the sexy body or the temperature
For the temperature, it is quite high for me also. Especially around the camera cover, All of people I know have this high heat also.
Never measure by numbers..So I don't know about that
Phone used to get hot on stock roms but thats it
Mine runs very cool with my Anker battery. Never gets hot.
Sorry for creating a new post on this topic when there is one already, but I want to know if reaching 45-47° normal? I use 3G for 15-20 minutes and the temperature just shoots up..please suggest some solutions if it is abnormal

That doesn't seem right at all, while hosting a wireless hotspot for 3 devices my phone doesn't get above 80 F. How how (to the touch) does it feel?
I can feel the heat from the screen and also from the back when I just place my hand over the phone!! It happens when I play games on my phone (angry birds and so on).. And after sometime it goes back to normal..

Possibly random process
I have gotten my razr to 125 F, (52C) But that was charging, 4G, netflix, HDMI out, bluetooth on and docked. Have had it at 108F with only 3g, and some games or high power programs.
Also will shoot up to 102 randomly in my pocket (higher sometimes, it was uncomfortable) till I rooted and set a cpu governor for when screen is off.
Just registered here and posting from my tower. My device, droid razr, felt like it was getting too hot with average usage. It is my third replacement since February but that is a long story.
I called VZW tech support and they never heard of such a thing LOL. Anyway, I posted the issue on a couple of forums and learned about a great widget called BatteryLife. It is available at the market for free and happily is not one of those apps that requires you agree to let them have access to everything you own and your first born child.
After installing the widget today I find my device runs at a low of 85 Fahrinheit to a high of 105. At least so far. The widget displays battery usage and current temperature. So one thing I found out was that a device can feel hot compared to our body temperature but be within a safe range of operation. Hope this is helpful.
I took the phone to Motorola service centre and they said that the phone is getting unusually hot. So they took it for observation and said that they will get back to me tomorrow. They said that they will replace it if necessary!!! So hoping for the best!!
Mine has done this a few times as well. Yesterday I was reading with my bible app for about 10 minutes and it just got smoking hot. Wasn't using data wifi or anything. Its like it just shot up in temp. Over the weekend this happened while in my pocket. I rebooted it both times and the temp came back down. I did not notice any force closes or anything running weird. Is there a way we can see what the culprit is? Maybe a logcat or something?

I have to agree about this. Mine has gotten extremely hot atleast to me because of flashing etc..I stuck it in the fridge LOL just to cool before continuing with flashing. While it may feel hot it might not be in danger.
Having that widget is cool (no pun intended ) I've been charging my razr to 100% before I go to sleep.
It was @ 82 Fahrenheit when it began, starting @ 60% When I checked it after it reached the full charge it had gone up to 84°.
Off the charger overnight it had gone to 90% charge and the temperature of the device was 82°.
As an aside, if I use my car charger the temp goes up around 8° or so. I'd encourage anyone to get that BatteryLife widget. You'll know what is going on with your device and if there is a warranty issue you'll be on firm footing to prove it.
BTW, after about 15 minutes on tapatalk my device is @ 96.5° F.

I just played dead space for 20 min and it got to 41C
I just got the phone from the service center in the morning and it hadn't heated up so far.. Actually haven't crossed 37°c.. The service guy just formatted and flashed the ROM. I have been using the phone normally till now but haven't installed some of the apps I had previously.. So will do that and let you know.
Anyway the service guy said that he will replace the phone if it still has the same problem.

After how long does it get warm when you play games like NOVA 3 and such?
For me it does after like 10-20min which is somewhat short to me, but then again, I've never owned a proper flagship phone such as the s3 before.
My phone gets heated up to 47°c after 20mins of riptide.
What's the temperature your phone heats up to? I suggest you use badass battery monitor to check the temperature

Your phone does what? Are you overclocking or something? My S2 doesn't get to 47°C after 1h of NOVA 3 while still being overclocked(Both the CPU and GPU).And the S3 is supposed(And I think proven too) to produce less heat than the S2.
My S3 gets a bit warmer too. Think it will be fixed in subsequent rom releases. Same thing happened with my S2 when I had it; it went away eventually
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
My s3 barely produces any heat compared to my s2,that thing was burning the flesh in my hands... Maybe that's the reason nova 3 runs sluggish on my phone but not to anyone else?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Has stock roms ever fixed the heat issues through updates in the past (on other phones ofc), or do I have to root and flash a custom rom to decrease the heat?
My s3 also get very hot from both sides after playing 15 mins of shadowgun. I m using stock rom. And yea here temperature is 42C in pakistan lahore!!!

I can't find any details for the Exynos chip in the S3, but afaik most ARM devices have a Tmax (maximum CPU temperature) of 50-something (58?) degree Celsius.
So if it's already 42 outside, you can expect the system to be 52 as air-cooling is terribly inefficient, especially in hot dry air.
When you fire up some games it will thus go above it's threshold and automatically reduce it's performance to keep itself from being damaged due to overheating.
in short i forgot my s3 in the car and it was damn hot...i came back to find it over heating and in boot loop.after it cooled down it was back to normal except now i have heat problem when i use the net or play a game...the question is was its exposure to over heat the cause of ruining something?

It definitely will get hot, I remember watching my son at swimming lessons last week.
I am in Bangkok and was outside using the phone extensively on 3G data, ambient temp 35+ Celsius. Can't remember exactly how hot the battery got, but sure out read well into the 40s.
Didn't have any hardware or software issues though.
As far as exchange goes, you could try, but they may reject the claim as you most likely were operating the device outside it's design limits.
From the Pg 172 of the GT-I9300 User Manual: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201206/20120613110217963/GT-I9300_UM_EU_Icecream_Eng_Rev.1.0_120607_Screen.pdf
Do not store your device in very hot or very cold areas. Use your
device at temperatures from -20 °C to 50 °C
• Your device can explode if left inside a closed vehicle, as the internal
temperature can reach up to 80 °C.
• Do not expose your device to direct sunlight for extended periods of time
(on the dashboard of a car, for example).
• Store the battery at temperatures from 0 °C to 40 °C.

All hardware is not exactly the same, so your device may be less torelant to excessive heat than others or vice versa.
Hope this explains it.........

Overheating will cause bootloops. I used to use my phone at work as a wife hotspot because it was faster than our work net. I plugged it in and it would always die after two hours from overheating. Finally rigged up a way to keep it in the freezer lol

Based on what you said, all seems back to normal.
To summarise;
It WILL heat up, depending on environmental conditions and also your using habits. CPU and GPU intensive apps and time spent on this state, and also general use whilst charging etc will heat it up.

+1 to the "It's fine"
Pull out the battery, there it'll list a safe operating temperature. The battery in my phone is "Safe" up to 60c, but it probably shuts itself off at around 55ish. 45 is nothing to a phone, so don't worry.
You're probably just being paranoid, paying super close attention to any kind of "Warm" after the overheating incident. It was probably reaching those same temps prior to leaving it in the car.
Hell, I left my Evo 3D (Super famous for overheating) on my black leather seats, in the summer, plugged in, and GPS running, for an hour or so. It shut itself off and wouldn't turn on for 45ish mins while I let it cool down... And it's running just fine now. Lol
So , all of yous posting about your outrageous phone/battery temps...I tried to make mine get hot. I went outside in 96 degree heat standing in direct sunlight for 25 minutes, screen back light turned up to maximum, and playing Goldeneye on N64oid. Wow..closest I could get was 119. It was hot, but it was still quite useable. No 125/130/140/150 degree temps. Btw, to be exact, I bought my Rezound online on November 26th last year.........battery life still sucks @$$...
Oh, and Verizon car chargers are garbage...:-B

At that temp your battery's already overheating.
If you can get it that hot, I'm sure there are things you could do that would make it hotter. Try talking on it for two hours with marginal signal strength. A 125-degree phone is not a pleasant thing against your ear. And you're most of the way there -- don't think your Rezound wouldn't do it.
Maybe you should run that 119 temp against some other types of phones for a reality check, instead of just comparing it to other Rezounds.

The kernel doesn't like when you attempt to manually change the CPU speed (both up or down) so it overheats. My phone's battery mysteriously died after 2 hours of idling once because I didn't know about it.

Might explain why my phone doesnt wake from charging overnight. Damn thing
The hottest mine ever got from use was 109 F. I left it in the car on a hot day once and when I turned it on to check temp it was at 130 F
