[Q] APN's - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Apparently can't post in the dev section under the rom I want to ask this about, because of the blanket solution of blocking you from doing so until 10 posts. Whatever. Hellybean rom, MMS isn't working properly. Want to check APN's, but can't seem to find the menu. Looked it up everywhere, and even have read a bunch of posts about people in that very rom for this very device going to Wireless and Networks>More>APN. There is no APN option. Theres Airplane Mode, VPN, Tethering, and Mobile Networks. Under none of those options is anything to do with APN's. Kind of driving me nuts. All jellybean roms seem to be missing it. So what are people referring to when they tell others to check APN settings if those settings are missing from every jellybean rom I've tried? Sorry if this seems like a dumb place to post this, considering the dev directly asked people to ask about problems and report them in that thread, but oh well. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Open voice dialer and say "open apn's" to access that menu. Then you can hit menu from there and edit your apn.

dial ##778, press send, enter spc which should be 000000, press enter, go to m.ip settings, enter cricket info, go to m.ip default profile, enter cricket info, save, reboot...download anycut from market and install, make shortcut to proxy settings with anycut, click shortcut you just made, enter wap.mycricket.com for host, 8080 for port, save, now u should be able to use browser, if not working call cs to refresh your mobile web.
thnx for helping and yea it did work ive had it working for a while now. and for those who havent figured out how to change mms settings. i was able to do it using mmsZap but only on the 2.1 leak for eris. just put in crickets info and your set u have a fully flashed eris to cricket. now just trying to figure out on how to use apps and gps working on theyre data plan.
From what I gather there is a solution for web apps but the folks who have the solution (and/or utility) that makes them work on cricket are being very tight-lipped about it.
Some web apps work. Some will not.
There is a motodroid solution that works well, but not a cricket one. The tech in Western New York everyone goes to here for stuff hasnt' even figured how how to put the Eris on Cricket. I offered to help him in trade for a .prl file, but he didn't take me up on it.
just an update
i just posted a solution for web/marketplace/browser thanks to the team at howard forums for their hardwork
i take no credit for this, i just simply posted what works for the eris from what they had already figured out onto an ongoing thread.
you can flash/root your phone to 2.1 from the guides here, then follow the thread overthere to get it all setup for cricket
www dot howardforums dot com/forumdisplay.php?f=394
Yes, while many folks worked on this solution, token is the man that brought it to the masses! Works 100% on my Eris!

Manually switch APNs

I've searched to the best of my ability and can't find much help. My problem is that when I'm any custom ROM (tried about 5 including CM7, CM9 and RootBox JB) I must manually switch APNs when I get a MMS message. So for example, if I receive a picture message, I have to go into my APN setting and manually select my MMS APN, then go back to my messaging app and hit download. Then once it downloads, I have to go back into my APN setting and switch back to my internet APN. On the stock ROM this was not the case. I have all the correct settings, I'm absolutely sure. I've tried editing the apns-conf.xml file to add my carriers settings. Tried flashing without the sim card in. Can't seem to get it to work. I'd really appreciate any help you guys can provide.

I assume you mean combine the two APN settings. I've tried that. All that does is leave me without internet or mms capabilities.
Seriously? what provider do you have? I'm guessing since you're in the USA judging by the american flag in your profile that you're on ATT or straight talk? Telling us what provider you have would help quite a bit..
Edit, I thought help me, help me I'm dying questions belong in the QnA forums?
Sorry, knew I was forgetting something. My carrier is Viaero. I live in the middle of nowhere in Colorado so its basically the only option. AT&T doesn't cover our area. And now this isn't an urgent issue, just something that kind of annoying. All I was looking for were some ideas on how to remedy the situation, so I thought general would be more appropriate.
Post both apns please
I've verified these with Viaero and with another SII running stock. also had an unlocked iPhone before which these worked with. Another side note, on custom roms if I put in the "APN TYPE" I get neither internet nor MMS. So I have to leave those blank to get it to work at all.

How to root i777 ssg2 on straight talk??

Hey everyone!! Been a while since ive rooted and flashed and i had some questions.
Im using my At&t ssg2 with Straight Talk service and was wondering can i still root my phone?? I didnt know if it would affect the apn settings or not. Im still on gingerbread 2.3.6. Just wanting to root so i can check out different roms.
i also want to know this
Rooting should not affect the apn settings. But if you want to be safe, write down the settings, and then you can manually enter them if they are changed.
Ive been using my GS2 on Straight Talk. Im not sure if you need to change the apn. I can receive phone calls without changing anything. However I do have apn settings for ST. Some people have different apn settings but I have what works for me. If there isnt anything in a spot leave it blank when you manually put it in the new APN. Here is what I have. there is a huge thread in here on ST. Search is your friend!! One more thing use Creepys guides to root your phone. All the info you need is there. READ THEM and READ them again so you understand what your doing!!!!

apn missing mms protocol settings

Hi this is an odd one, but here goes. I am on Solavei and have to manually set apns well recently after reflash, the apn setting for mms protocol is completely missing. Checked the factory tmobile apns and they don't show it either. I have no idea how this happened but it's driving me crazy. I've reset and flashed 3 different roms all with the same issue. Any ideas or input would be much appreciated. As a result of no mms protocol, I can no longer send or receive mms.
wow apparently I stumped everyone. Or my question isn't clear?
Search on the google for your settings and Than set manually or you may ask for help to your service provider,
They will guide you and teach you set manual settings..

lol I have done that. There is an entire field "mms protocol" missing from the apn settings on 3 roms that I've tried. i'm concerned that I somehow jacked something up during one of my flashes but I can't understand how it would affect all my installs unless they are from the same source.

lol what you guys aren't getting is I know all my settings. So slow down before you answer please. I know what my apn settings should be. I've done this before. The problem is that under apn settings in my phone, there is no longer a field for mms protocol. Without said field, I can't change the protocol to the correct setting and hence am not getting or sending mms.
Did you ever find a solution? I'm trying to enable MMS on my LG GTab and there are no MMS fields in the APN settings.

In your mobile networks find the APN names. If there is no explicit MMS section, there is a PROTOCOL section or something like it where you would add "mms" in the new APN you would create.
This page will give some basic insight, but might not need to be followed exactly--tailor to your needs.

lol at the previous poster doing exactly the same thing ... again. You guys, the problem isn't what setting to use OR where to use the setting. The problem is there is literally no place to put in the setting that you need. The field "MMS Protocol" is not there.... you simply cannot enter the information that you need to. It's obvious that it's in the APN settings where you can change all the other related fields. Funny how two years apart, people are not reading and spewing the same stuff...
Anyway, apologies for resurrecting this, yet again. I got a new phone recently and I am having the same issue. I'm looking for this field but it's not available. This was actually the most relevant thread that I've found after a bunch of searching. So, if anyone found a solution (for this or any other phone/tablet), please tell!

Maybe the rom's don't have that setting? Same thing if you create a new APN?
Correct, it is not in the default APN nor available when creating a new APN. Unfortunately, I am stuck with a phone that has no custom roms at the moment. The question is whether this setting is actually missing (not displayed) AND unsupported (not implemented) or whether it is simply missing (not displayed) in the rom. There seems to be very little online that I can find about this other than threads which mention that the "MMS protocol" should be x, y, z for the APN of a particular network. Basically, all my searches turn up nothing as to "why" this is missing and whether (or not) there is anything that can be done about it.

Carrier probably crippled the feature in their factory rom--which means it is available, but not displayed--they don't want anyone messing with it.
So all you gotta do is find how to edit the file in which that information is stored, and I bet it's really easy.
Good luck.

While I don't disagree with you that there is probably a file somewhere that deals with this...I disagree that it is easy. That is, it would be easy...if the information on how to do it and/or where to find it were actually easy to find
I also disagree that this is simply due to a carrier-based rom. First reason is that this phone is an international, factory unlocked phone and the rom comes directly from the manufacturer. While it's possible that manufacturers themselves don't want you to change this setting, that would explain the second problem I have. I have a slightly older phone with a custom rom which also doesn't have this setting. It's possible that phone doesn't support that setting anyhow...but I don't feel like buying a bunch of other phones just to look into this one thing.
Anyway... none of this stuff about *me* is actually even relevant. I think our discussion still doesn't help people find what they are looking for. So, let's leave it at that and maybe someone will stop by here sooner than later and know the answer (and then also post the answer) about if this is "unlockable" or it's permanently missing for whatever reason.

Then the factory was very lucky in locking in just precisely the APN you need in your country for your carrier. That doesn't sound like an unlocked international device to me.
See if there is a way to add a new APN specifically for MMS. MMS settings can be excluded from APN because they are meant to be in a separate APN.

Sorry...not sure I follow the relationship here... And unlocked phone is not attached to a carrier. I bought it unlocked, unattached to a carrier, and I am using it on a carrier here, without the need to unlock it. How exactly does that mean that the factory locked something on it...
Just because there is no "MMS protocol" setting in the APN settings doesn't mean my phone is completely gimped.

I created a new APN with just mms in the "APN type", saved, went back in to edit and see no difference in the available settings. On the APN selection screen, this particular APN did not have a "checkbox" on the right side, so it was different due to the APN type.

I'm glad you gave it a try.
Every carrier's APN's are different--a factory unlocked phone has to allow for changes to the APN and one can only assume, to the MMSC. Did you put the other APN settings in yourself?
Have you asked the factory or tried support from the manu?
What kind of phone do you have--Amaze 4G? Which region?
It's been years and I'm having the same issue, has anyone found the solution?
Edit: By years I mean this thread, not me having the issue.
I have a S7 Edge.
In the APN Settings, there seems to be everything except the option for MMS Protocol. :/
This is the first time I've seen someone with my exact problem...it appears no one has the answer yet? OP, did you ever figure it out?

Hi. I am having the same issue with my Lenovo 503LV. There is no MMS setting present in the menus.

Straight talk on i605

I've had an issue crop up every now and then esp if i switch roms. Right now I'm running the nameless 5.0 ROM t0lte on my i605 and sometimes it gets stuck on edge. Here's some help with getting 4g back.
Go to phone dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
Should take you to a special menu. Click the top selection should be phone info.
Select band as in attached image.
Also go into settings where you change apn and make sure APN info looks like attached files. Then goto network operators and search for.. Try one of the at&t ones.
This should work
