I've been trying to read around but I ended up with nothing.
Can anyone offer suggestions for which ROM i might use.
I've been on stock HC, but got bored with slow speeds and skype playing up... So I just s-off and install stock GB.
Really I want a nice smooth ROM, ideally with pen, hw buttons and root. I don't need any specific OS. But I can't seem to find many non-'stock ROMs that cater for pro-grade which is very important for me.
Any suggestions please. Its late and I've run out of steam for looking.

I'm usually not a fan of "what is the best ROM" threads. But seeing as activity is close to nothing on this forum for some time right now, there aren't really any active threads on the topic, so it seems like a valid question.
When I first switched to HC (must have been way back in late 2011) it seemed to perform close to as smoothly as GB. Really not much different at all in smoothness (insignificant really), despite some people's claims that HC is so laggy compared to GB. Now, I feel the tablet is super laggy. But I think it has more to do with now owning a One X phone since may, which is so much faster, and much better CPU specs. Faster than any Android device on the market when it was released.
At first I thought maybe the ROM had just slowed down over time, and bogged down with processes, apps etc. So I did a full data wipe, and flashed the newest version of the custom ROM I was on. And the performance did not change. So I really do think its just a perception thing.
Now I'm digressing quite a bit from your question. I played around with a few ROMs here and there (mostly earier in the year) and settled on HoneySense. It gives you the option to turn the hardware keys back on, and some other cool features. I don't feel that it makes the tablet any less laggy, even overclocked (maybe just a tiny bit). But I did seem to have a decent gain in idle battery life, which is certainly a good thing.
HC version of LeeDroid is pretty good too. But the app drawer was just too crowded for me. I think the dev was going to make some mods for different app drawer layouts to remedy this, but it never happened AFAIK. Its just a personal taste, you might think its fine.
I also tried the Sense version of IOIDroid for a short time. It had some real potential. Not sure how the dev did it, but it seemed significantly smoother than HoneySense. But there was a few things that were deal breakers for me. It has the AOSP keyboard, (I found this choice a bit odd, since there is also a "Senseless" version of this ROM)where I really prefer the Sense one. Also, I could not get Gmail working, which is a must have for me. Wouldn't even let me install it from the Market.
I never got into the ICS or JB ROMs. Still too many things not working quite right. Development has slowed. But hopefully the dev (Dexter) has not completely left our device.
For fast, lag free and all stuff working use FlyHIGH GB rom. Ull limit yourselves with apps for HC / ICS but hell, rom runs great. I did try HC Leedroid, ICS XXL and JB, LeeDroid GB and ofc stock GB and stock HC. FlyHigh is best for mine usage since on top off all i need phone calls via BT. With good setup ull have good tab look even on GB. I also find out HW keys r awsome compare to HC/ICS/JB low menu buttons. I am missing those a lot on SGT2.

Is have to use Bluetooth headset for making the phone call on GB 2.3.4 stock Rom on Flyer?
Is any one use Flyer to make phone call without BT as the way cell phone did?
Is FlyHIGH GB rom still need to use the BT to make the phone call?

I've had my Hero for aboutttt 7 weeks now and i've been tinkering mainly with 1.5 ROMs.
I've settled with MoDaCo 3.2 which is blazingly fast and has some decent features.
Recently i've tried some 2.1 roms, Villain 5.4, BeHero+ and some others. I tried Villain 5.5 yesterday and kept it until today.
I really liked it, the stock look, the incredible amount of features and general improvements to the interface from 1.5.
Now. Every 2.1 ROM i've used has had something in common. They're all incredibly slow. I mean, once the app is running it's generally ok but switching between apps can be incredibly slow.
Closing an app and sliding between the home screens is extremely sluggish and opening messages can take up to 10 secs.
Keyboard input is about as flat as the expression on my face. And once the keys are recognised the phone vibrates as much as a sex toy...
Don't get me wrong, Villain5.5 is probably the best 2.1 ROM out there, it just doesn't seem to perform well.
So what makes 2.1 so slow?
Is it because it's a stock kernel? I see MoDaCo has "Teknologist"?
Is the Hero just too lame?
This has probably been answered more times than you're willing to count. I'm just frustrated to the point at which i stuck my phone in my mouth and proceeded to nibble on the corner.
Try SenseHero 2.2 - it's fast. Really fast, I think even faster than MoDaCo 3.2.

I really, really disagree there
When we are talking about responsiveness anyway.
Responsiveness of any 2.1 ROMs are far beyond what I would like, VillainRom is the fastest I've used but still not what I'd like for my main phone. Esp vs ROMs like the Kimera 1.8... which is the fastest 1.5 ROM I've ever used (and now sticking to)
TBH I'm not surprised, with no official GSM Hero release, there's no fine-tuned drivers for it etc. Ports can get it running on a GSM Hero but in no way are those builds really built to be used on the phone, they're just modified by XDA Devs. I think thats what makes the wait for the 2.1 from HTC even greater because that should hopefully be the 2.1 we could all finally move to.
(...once XDA roots and tweaks it of course )
to check how fast it is, linpack is better or the benchmark - softweg one?
Running SenseHero2.2 now and have done for a couple days.
Feels very responsive and works very well
SlideVillain 1.1.0 is actually really pretty fast, and I currently use that as my everyday ROM. I used to be a devout taskiller user, but I have now uninstalled Taskiller as you just don't need one on SlideVillain.
Also, the new SuperHero ROM from Villain is unbelievably fast. It is a semi-vanilla ROM, although only available to donators for the moment in a closed Beta (there are still little bugs needing ironed out).
Not all 2.1 ROMs are slow though. The SuperHero ROM is actually as fast as the Desire in use. See http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=507 for some info about it.

What are the pros and cons vs Froyo?
Well, I went from Froyo to GB and for me:
Much faster and smoother
Almost no lag, you would think it was a 1Ghz phone
WIFI and GPS locks on almost instantly and does not drop out.
3G data rate is mouch more consistent
I have been waiting patiently for the Thunderbolt, and this rom will make the wait much easier

There is really not a whole lot different, besides looks. The GB keyboard is better. I could really use either one in a pinch, though right now I am using GSB myself.

That's actually not true at all, there are quite a few differences. Workshed's rom uses the latest CM7 nightly (RC1). Tazz's rom uses ADW as the default home launcher, Workshed's uses LauncherPro. Not sure of the numbers but both roms come overclocked at different numbers. Workshed's rom comes with an extra theme (Mau5KANG). There are quite a few differences but my suggestion honestly is to try them both for about 5 days each and see which one you like best ! Hope all this helps.
Its the little things;
Theme Manager has great potential, change themes on the fly
Better memory management. I no longer use autokiller.
App Management in settings, populates fast and is more user friendly. Great for killing stubborn or hung apps without the need for 3rd party app. (Older versions were slow and clunky).
Built in CPU manager clock speed and governor.
Auto bright setting controls seem much improved IMO.
More lockscreen options.
Overall responsiveness improved, providing better user experience.
Active development. More options and improvements still to come.

My biggest concern is speed.
I have flashed a lot of ROMs over the past year or so. I have found regardless of the ROM when my available memory drops below 50M my phone gets laggy. I started using Go Launcher about a month ago and really like it (running app tab is great). I see apps running in the background that I know I haven't used like facebook, youtube and Pandora. Autokiller does not seem to be doing a good job squashing them. I want Pandora on my phone I just only want it running when I am using it.
Conapp, Tazz, Kaos and Shed have all been great and very responsive to questions or issues with their ROMs
I think it is time to give GB a run.
GB does a great job managing memory and terminating background apps. Never get the slow Downs like I did on 2.1 or 2.2

As part of the upgrade, look into flashing xtrcache2cache, which will free up a lot of memory for data and apps - probably about 30 MB or so. If you do use it, you just have to remember to re-flash it after updating the ROM. So,
- flash GSB
- flash gapps (mandatory, even for no wipe updates)
- flash cache2cache

Ok, one more advantage to GB, and this, to me, is a big one, is cursor placement/text selection. It's much better - I actually like it more than iOS's tap/hold/magnifying glass.

Ah! That helps answer a concern of mine wondering how easy it will be to get used to not having a trackball when I do eventually (probably not for a year) upgrade from the Eris. I don't use the trackball a lot, but for fine adjustments to text selections, it certainly has helped.
i am finding GB to be much faster and my battery life seems to be better.

I can imagine this may have been asked before, yet I can't find any definitive answers, to what are the benefits to running ICS over Gingerbread at this time?
I dont really think there is much right at this moment, due to the ICS being out is so buggy, but i read alot of positive about CM9 which is running ICS - though one major drawback for me is the USB mount doesn't work.
But after playing around with my dads Galaxy Nexus, the diffrence aint gamebreaking. Surely its optimised in other ways, better interface imo - but again, Gingerbread is really great, and i will surely stick to this untill ROM chefs starts to cook roms on stable ICS releases.

right, ics is still buggy. but check out some of the very good custom ics roms in the development forum. some of them now are more stable than they previously do. i mean, stable enough for daily use.
apparently ICS has a lot of benefit over GB:
some of the good points:
- smoother ui animation (you'll feel more smoother than GB, also there are more transition animation added)
- improved google apps (gmail, calendar, maps, phone, sms have been redesigned and feels better than current version in GB)
- voice dictation (different from the one in GB, instead of "press-speak-press-speak", now you can keep speaking and the word will come out as you speak)
- face unlock (no need to introduce)
- options to encrypt the phone memory (forget if GB has it)
- some new widgets (some of the custom roms use AOSP apps instead of the samsung one, e.g. the calendar widget looks much better now)
- camera app seems to open faster
some problems:
- usb mass storage not working (may get fixed in the future, but now you can use MTP instead, if you are using windows or mac. linux users can have some problem with that)
- some apps don't work with ICS (most apps work, for the rest we need to wait for update to support ics)
- battery drain issue (there have been several report for battery drain on "Android OS" process, google seems to fix it in 4.0.4, so we just need to wait. currently mine can last over 10h with moderate use)
- remember it's still in alpha/beta stage, so backup your data!
if you are really interested, make a full backup using CWM and try to flash some of the roms. you can always go back to ginger bread by recovering the backup. hope this helps
I tried one of the cyanogenmod alpha builds from codeworkx and i had the impression that the menu is cleanear and more tidied up all in all. dont know if thats an ics or a cyanogenmod thing though.
my wireless lan seemed to work better, too

After being on ICS Remix 8.6 by Westcrip, I "feel" the browsing, the sliding and most of the navigation on the phone is happening a lot faster.
Before February I felt like my old Gingerbread-thingy by Eskimo i belive... was the nuts. Now its like playing in a other league.

How does DRH compare to our best Froyo Roms? I'm mainly concerned with stability and fluidity (ie, top-end gaming or video speed isn't as important as moving within and into-and-out-of apps). With the second core up and running in ICS, is DRH now our most consistent daily driver if we don't need the camera or the mic?
I've been running Clemsyn's Beastly combo for a while now, and it's incredible, but it lags on the two programs I use the most: Pulse and Dolphin, and for whatever reason its wifi connection is a little wonky for me. I've been following the DRH progress pretty closely, and my trigger finger is getting really itchy wanting to flash it. However, I'm about to travel a lot this summer and will need my GTab for work (word processing mainly), so I need it to be stable and reliable while I'm away from my desktop and can't monkey around with it if I need to.
So, community, what say you? Should I make the jump now, should I hold off until they roll out the 3.x kernel, or should I stick with Beastly?
(All of this, by the way, is asked in complete humility, knowing that I'm playing around with incredible work by incredible--and incredibly generous--people!!)
I have not used the Froyo ROMs, having installed Flashback and then DRH.
I like DRH, it is fast, I still get kernel panics when the tablet hangs and/or reboots. It surfs *very* well, esp with the different launchers.
I have noticed not all games work with ICS. I love Madden NFL but it won't run.
Froyo is still the smoother experience imo, however the ICS kernel is catching up very quickly. For me its definetly good enough for a daily driver, only minor anounces to deal with at this point. Fosser2 has even hinted that he may have a working camera and mic soon. I think in another month or two ICS will easily hold its own against the Froyo roms. Give it six months and we wont even be talking about anything but DRH's ICS kernel for the gtab.
I found the ICS to be maddeningly slow, switched back to C and C and it is a pleasure again.
I load a lot of apps, and when I want to use them I do not expect slow loading and constant warnings flashing on the screen. I hope ICS gets there but IMO not there now.
I updated to 404, and kept it for a week. Now I'm back on GB and oh man it's so much better.
Why is ICS so freaking horrible on this phone?
Compared to GB, ICS is buggy, slow, unstable, unresponsive and prone to hang.
I don't know what you use your phone for, but with mine, I used to play games, browse the web, and listen to music, other than normal phone usage for calls and SMS.
The browser on ICS is pathetically slow and unstable compared to the one in Gingerbread. In GB, you could actually run 720p youtube videos in desktop mode page and it would actually work perfectly. If you do it on ICS you risk hanging your phone and having to remove the battery. Either that, or the browser either crashes or becomes extremely unresponsive to the point even haptic feedback on the back and home buttons becomes delayed. On certain complex desktop pages, swiping becomes unresponsive and responds up to a full second late. Try this on the youtube desktop page or any other big page. Also, the new ICS browser tends to close on it's own for no reason, and as far as I know, there is no way to go back to the home page using it. The only way is to open a new tab, go back to the tab page, close the old tab and switch to the new tab. On the old one all you have to do is simply close all tabs and the browser would automagically put you back to the home page.
Games used to run fairly well on GB but in ICS they are so much more laggy. Some games that were perfectly fluid and playable are choppy on ICS, for example, Wind Up Knight, Let's Golf 3 (which is unplayable), Asphalt 6. The Angry Bots tech demo ran well on GB but it lags like there is no tomorrow on ICS. Another game that used to work perfectly in GB is Riptide GP, after I updated to 404, the game tends to hang the phone after a while, requiring a battery removal.
Other than this, the ICS update has several bugs including malfunctioning led notifications, no compass in google maps (this basically renders google maps unusable), and general clunky feel when scrolling through homescreens, when in GB the whole thing was smooth as silk. Even using a live wallpaper couldn't make the phone slow on GB, while on ICS it looks like even moving a bunch of icons is too much for this phone to handle.
Sure, ICS adds some eye candy such as the NXT theme which I really like, an animation for screen rotation, but I'd rather have a functional phone than a pretty but slow, clunky, unstable phone.
Again, I have no idea why you guys love ICS so much, GB is a lot better in every way imaginable, and as an added bonus, you can use all the Xperia S stuff on it without any problem, including the beautiful new music player.
ICS is simply a slow clunky mess which barely works. I'd love to know why you think it's better than GB.
not true .. it is laggy because it runs on 1ghz .. imagine if ur phone had 600mhz .. laggy as hell but weirdly htc desire c ... can run ics
be lucky that sony actually updated ur xperia ray unlike scamsung they didnt update the galaxy s to ics because its specs cant handle it but it has same specs as our ray

Sony released a Beta ICS for Xperia play and all users started complaining games are laggy !!, it sucks!!, ICS is fail!!... the end result was Sony cancelled ICS for Play..

You are wrong.
The user has every right in the world to complain if something doesn't work properly. I don't think the users complaining has anything to do with Play not receiving ICS.
ICS on Ray is slow and it is much worse than Gingerbread for whatever reason. Maybe our phone is not powerful enough to run ICS in the first place?
Also, I would have preferred an update to Gingerbread with all the Xperia S stuff and gingerbread 2.3.7 to this ICS which is exactly the same as gingerbread for the most part, only much slower and buggy.
A smartphone should be all about ease of use, if I have to resort to modding and overclocking to get the damn thing running at an acceptable level of performance, there has to be something very wrong with it.

Sony did offer an explanation for this: ICS was made for a dual core phone with 1 GB RAM
although ICS is new and compelling in many ways, we would like all of our users to make an informed decision when selecting what Android™ software to use. We are actually proud to say that our Gingerbread software is very stable and has great performance, so it’s not a bad idea to stay on this release. Ice Cream Sandwich is more intensive, for example in terms of resource usage.
When it comes to ICS, it’s a major upgrade of Android™, and there are a lot of things that have changed compared to the Gingerbread release. Some of these changes affect the performance and stability of the system, for example by using more CPU power and RAM. ICS was developed with Galaxy Nexus in mind, which is based on a TI platform with dual-core processor and 1GB RAM

ICS is overall much better and functional than GB. Who wants to use 3.3" display for gaming has some serious mental problems :banghead:
Try custom ROMs
I have SE Xperia Ray and try almost all options (rooted/unrooted with custom ROMs or not) sincerely Stock firmware a little laggy in browser or then multitasking particularlry at version 4.03 BUT at 4.04 i see it a big difference in smoothness the OS is much stable. The big problem now is 512 RAM, problem until you root your phone and install custom ROM (you need to unlock bootloader without loosing DRM data) delete aplications who work in backround you really didn't need them like update, livemanager I was very happy when i unninstaled Gmaps that all time worked in background even if GPS off, and now I use Igo for GPS Navigation. Now I have KA20.2 ROM and I can you assure the phone are so smooth and stable. My advice: root your phone, unlock bootlader with a safe method ( I used S1) a install a custom ROM, here on XDA you may found so many nice performing ROMs, and of course remove useless aplication who work in backround and eat your precious RAM. And of course before you unlock bootloader and root the phone, install cwm, read the guides, exists a risk, you know so you need to be informed how to unlock bootloader, root your phone, use fastboot and flashboot mode, of course in the case you never rooted a phone.

On my device I didn't encounter any bugs, lags or poor performance with the ICS.
It's stable, runs smoothly and has the same battery life I had with BG.
One can't say for a fact the ICS don't run well on this device, since other people have different experience with it. A person my note his personal experience - and it's just fine to do so!

play games on ICS? ahaha you make me laugh. small screen but still eager to play games? LOL. go get Xperia Play mate, it build for gamers. i feel sorry for you then. GB is history for me. you'll never move forward if you keep looking back. neway, enjoy your phone mate
@MarkMRL: That's been my experience too, though I don't play games.
I haven't tried the latest ICS though, which people report as being much better.
I moved to CM7.2 - it's very fast, with lots of great features the stock ROM doesn't have.
At the end of the day use what you're happy with
ICS is not buggy but it needs time.
Ok so 1.ICS is better looking cause gingerbread is a pain to ur eyes
2. Its better optimized than gb games are slightly better
3. It is not just for non rooted phones. Like it needs lots of optimiztion. Cuz stock one ahs lot of procceses and u have only 50mb ram free at all time so thats why is laggy. But if you supercharge or smurph out you ray-bam its perfeckt
I have 130 apps lots of procceses running at backround 5 HD games i play and i still
have 120 mb free ram so.. you have wrong thoughts about ics on ray...
Hey man I was in the same boat as you, when I first upgraded to ice I asked myself WTF is this **** and I really hated it, it was slow as hell and laggy but you got to know that developers know a lot more than you and that everything happens for a reason. Sorry but you come across asa huge cry baby
A few weeks back I was almost in the same mind set as you are in right now, I thought gingerbread was the best and ics was just crap but boy was I wrong
follow these steps and il bet you'l make another thread about why you love ics this time
1. Backup all your data, contacts. Msgs and pics
2. Do a factory reset/full wipe
3. Use the seus/pc companion and do a "repair"
NOW YOUR PHONE SHOULD BE COMPLETE STOCK MODE
4. Root the phone
5. Go to developer options, uncheck "dont keep apps" and "limit background processes" remember UNCHECK
6. Change window&transistion animations to .5
7. Use se tweaker to get cwm
8. Use hansip87s system ui and framework mod smooth scrolling thing (this makes some neat changes and adds notification and control and status widgets to the notification panel and you dont have to use the stupid status widget and the lame control buttons
9. There are some build prop edits /hacks thread where I saw the code for faster UI and scrolling and smoother transistions
10. If you want to use some of the awesome ROMS here by the awesome devs

I bet you your device will be faster and better than gb now, also its not the end of the world so be patient sony will make it better with each update and please, if you want to game that much why did you buy a phone with a 3.3in screen bro? Pm me if u have any problems
Oh also use root explorer or any other app similar to uninstall the se bloatware crap, I always have 150-120 free RAM always now, plus ics seems to have ajdusted the internal memory a bit

ICS is overall much better and functional than GB. Who wants to use 3.3" display for gaming has some serious mental problems :banghead:

This is not a "phone", it's a smartphone. It should be able to run games and internet browser. And 3.3 inches is more than enough for those silly smartphone games. Every game I tried is perfectly playable and looking good too. I'm not a "smartphone gamer" (just the name makes me cringe), but I enjoy wasting some time with those little games every now and then (I also have a PSP, DS and PSVita by the way). It annoys me that I was able to play certain games before but not anymore.
The point is that I was able to do all of that when I bought it, but now I can't do it anymore.

On my device I didn't encounter any bugs, lags or poor performance with the ICS.
It's stable, runs smoothly and has the same battery life I had with BG.
One can't say for a fact the ICS don't run well on this device, since other people have different experience with it. A person my note his personal experience - and it's just fine to do so!

Are you telling me your Ray has fully functional led notification and compass in google maps? Or that you can watch 720p youtube videos in the browser (or equivalent heavy browsing) without the crappy thing slowing down to a crawl or locking up entirely?
And no, I'm not crying I'm just stating facts.
Also, firefrenzy, that's exactly what I did when I updated to 404. I know all there is to know when it comes to installing stuff, I have unlocked bootloader and installed a stock kernel with CWM I found on this board, and also supercharged to 100%. Still horrible. I haven't tried ICS custom roms yet.

i dont know about the compass in the maps because i dont use the google maps ever, but i have no problems with the led notification or lag when playing hd video through browser, i have multiple tabs, of xda developers and another bodybuilding forum tabs and im using whatsapp messenger and normal messenger with my earphones plugged in listening to music altogeather at once on an almost daily basis and im having no problems, sure all that is slurping away my battery but that is understandable, only issue i had was i could not charge the phone when "switched off" the phone used to go into a bootloop, but the awesome people here fixed that too

BRO TAKE OFF ALL THAT STUFF,CLEAR ALL CACHE AND DATA AND START OVER FROM STOCK, ICS IS BETTER THAT WAY
AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN UPGRADED TO 4.0.4, SE'S OFFICIAL IS STILL 4.0.3
ICS was smooth for me & it's smoother now i'm on JJ's Hybrid ROM.
Try a custom rom...
Run on 4.0.4 Original rooted with all bloat remove, including all FB stuff. It runns realy good. Sure get a redraw some times after surfing on some heavy sites or a long driveing session with waze. But in may normal daily use, read e-mail, check calander and make phone calls it runs realy well and lag free.
But the Sony dailer is crap, I use exDailer & Contacts, much better and faster.
This toic should be moved to general. Unless it helps developers in some way which i have a hard time believing.
