To make a long story short.
I bought this phone yesterday, dedcided to root, flashed cwm through odin, got a failure so the whole night trying to figure out whats going on and still haven't figured it out yet till now. I kept getting the firmware kies upgrade issue with the yellow triangle.
I posted a help thread on the SGH-1727 section and thats where I also got my guide. The whole time I have been putting in SGH-1727 skyrocket drivers and using odin app for that phone. Since there are a few type of galaxy SII on this forum i got confuse.
My goal is to root the phone, get the nicest JB rom and also a nice kernel which I can port over to this phone. I am not going to even start which best roms or even best kernel, but i just want to get back on track on how to fix my problem first.
As of now im stuck on firmware upgrade kies screen. Which Odin should I use to flash? Should I flash a stock rom first or CWM?
First and foremost: You do NOT flash CWM on this phone, it is included in the custom kernels and each ROM is packaged with one. You can change the kernel afterwards if you so desire. Also, DO NOT use any app labeled CWM or ROM Manager... Just don't. You're likely to create problems for yourself. Nothing against you, it's just the way this phone works.
If you can get back to complete stock, I would do so. After that, read the stickies. After that, read them again. TWICE!
Once you're done with that, use Google to search any questions you may still have. End your search queries with: I777 xda - ALL the information you need is here in these forums and can be found by simply searching. Some things you may have to dig a little, but for the basics, it's easily found.
Trust me, I'm being nice. I'm trying to keep you from being flamed... not guaranteeing its gonna work.
Oh, if you don't find it on these boards, don't use the info.

Lesson learned. I feel bad even one of the people that helped me remote access my laptop to resolved the issue that wasn't resolved.
I managed to go back to stock thanks to creepyncrawler guides. Now basing it off a lot of what I see. This phone has a lot of one click programs. I am so used to HTC builds, but not on Samsung.
I don't even know the first step and there are so much information everywhere on here. Don't know where to start. If someone can guide me and not bag on me telling me I'm lazy and don't what to search stuff please I don't need that.
I just don't want to end up like this guy http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757972&page=2

That was the only case of confirmed emmc damage that I have seen on this forum. If you want to avoid this possibility, then from stock Gingerbread, which I assume you have if you followed my guide, then flash a custom firmware of your choice. The kernels packaged with the custom firmwares all are safe.
Read and follow the first guide linked in my signature, and you can flash custom firmware without taking weeks to study and learn.

Kernels are always included when you flash a rom, which you can use to flash any other rom.

I did a backup, wipe cache, dalvik cache, flashed super nexus rom and google app like im suppose to, rebooted and now im stuck on the nexus boot screen for more than 10 minutes now.
What am I missing? Should I wipe data/factory reset as well next?
Always follow the OPs instructions for installing their ROM.

With that being said, NEVER assume that you will be able to use your phone after a flash. Not trying to deter or scare you, but always have everything backed up and anything you really want off the phone (pics etc.) - Some say a FULL WIPE us need between every flash. I agree. It GREATLY reduces your chance of having a bad flash.
So, in short, yes. You seem to be catching on, but in your spare time read up on some more helpful threads and I think you'll be a flashaholic on your S2 soon enough
Also, this device is vastly different than any other. If you have experience with other phones, that's great, but not always helpful.

Always wipe data/factory reset & wipe cache when flashing a different rom than the one you currently have (sometimes when updating a rom to newer version of the same rom, some say data wipe is not needed). Go back into recovery mode by holding volume - & + and the power button and release when you see the second samsung splash screen. You will be able to wipe data and then reboot into SuperNexus if all goes well, if not then re-flash the rom and gapps. Also to prevent lock-ups on SuperNexus I recommend using Siyah 4.1.4 (in siyah thread) or Siyah 4.1.5 (in the semi thread) for a kernel. To do that just go back to recovery and flash the kernel (wiping cache & dalvik) then reboot. Also SuperNexus comes with ROM manager but do not use it, Siyah will install CWM recovery. These are the steps I followed when doing this on my I777.
You should always full wipe when switching roms. Initial boot can take awhile, though. If you hit 30, re try with full wipe

U don't have to wait 30 minutes. I've never had a rom take more than 5 to fully boot up. And as stated always wipe data cache and system when coming from a different rom base or upgrading to a new base.

30 is just my "****s definitely not happening" cut off. The anticipation of potentially having screwed something up leads me to sweat the boot time. I've had a handful of 10-15 minute boots back during broken ics days. Call it fire and forget stress management lol

As stated in the title, this will be my first time rooting/flashing. I did a good bit with my old Tilt2 thanks to Entropy, but Android and rooting is all new to me. Anyway, on to the question:
Is it necessary to follow the instructions found in "ROM's, Kernels, Tools & "How to" I777 SGS2"
to flash/root my gs2 before flashing this? ([Rom][4.0.3-ICS][XWLP3] Phone-Bricker v2.7)

ps - I have searched the forums through and through and unfortunately I have not found an answer to this particular question, sorry.

I recommend reading the links posted in the sticky to get you started. Please read as much as you can before attempting to do anything. For flashing stuff, this is your guide, but I still recommend that you read a lot more than just that thread before you do anything. There's a ton of information that you should know, and it'll probably take you at least a couple days (took me weeks) to understand it all. Again, start with the links in the sticky.
Ya karate, I have been reading for the past few days about routing, flashing, modems, unrooting etc. Watched several videos and will continue to do so until this weekend when I get some time to go through with it.
As for my question... Is it necessary to root and flash to a custom kernel before flashing to phonebricker?
Clay
ps - I will read everything in those links (again for some)

If you have been reading for the past few days and still asking this question, I suggest you reading more, much more.
Do a logical thinking.
1. If I want to have phone bricker on my device? How? What is requirement to do so? (hint: CWM. Go figure what that is, I assume)
2. OK, now CWM is the requirement, how do I get it on my device? Read up again
3. So, since CWM is on my device, what next????

Yes. If you're on stock GB, root first, use Mobile Odin Lite to flash a custom GB kernel (Entropy's DD or Siyah), then use the CWM included in the kernel to flash Phone Bricker.
Ok so phone is rooted, but I have a question I can't find the answer to.
In the flash without tripping root counter thread, after you're rooted it says to use mobile Odin lite which is all well and fine, I understand that. It says to use it to flash the kernel (GB) you want to use. However, it doesn't say anything about needing a "FlashKernel" which is what the Odin thread says is needed. Is this necessary to flash Entropy Daily/Siyah/etc or is it a kernel all the same and can be overlooked?

I have no idea what a flash kernel is or which Odin thread you're referring to. Just use Mobile Odin to flash Entropy's DD or Siyah. You'll then have CWM, from which you can flash anything you want, and you'll likely never need any form of Odin again (so long as you don't flash anything not recommended by this forum and/or built for this phone).

Mobile Odin and Mobile Odin Lite both consist of two parts. Both parts are apk's really, but one is the main program, and the other, called the flash kernel, contains the version of ClockworkMod Recovery specific to a particular phone. Mobile Odin Lite will recognize and flash a kernel even though there is no flash kernel installed for it. But to use all it's features, that is to flash a complete firmware, or parts other than the kernel, you need to have the flash kernel installed.
I know the terminology that the developer chose to use is rather confusing, since the flash kernel that is part of Mobile Odin has nothing in common with the kernel we want to flash onto our phone. But that's what he named it.
You don't need the flash kernel if all you want to do is install a custom kernel onto your phone, and then delete Mobile Odin Lite. But if you want to keep and use Mobile Odin Lite, then you will need to install the flash kernel apk as well.

Ok done some searching about wiping, and everything I've read says to do so, however, it was never mentioned in the instructions used to root and flash to ukh7 from uck6. So, if I do wipe after I've flashed to Entropy DD (which I tried and it didnt take? When I try to load up CWM it loads up like normal ie. the "downloading" page thing... where you can see if you've tripped the binary counter. Do I need to delete Odin first?), will I need to backup any apps/personal files/contacts?
The threads I've read about wiping have been... somewhat conflicting about what is kept after a factory reset/wipe and what isnt.

You'll need to back up apps using Titanium Backup or a similar app. You will not have to back up personal files on internal or external SD cards; they will not be touched by the wipe. With contacts, you should have them linked to your Google account, so they should already be backed up...

I'm a Ex-Tilt2 user, so I can remember the process of learning how to get at the guts of an Android device with WM6 mentality.
If I recall correctly, a common and recommended step in flashing a new ROM on the ol' Tilts was to use Task27(or some number ending in 7) to wipe all existing data. Android devices don't generally require that. Factory reset/wipe removes all personal data, leaving the OS unchanged from the flashed ROM. Essentially, from a blank device, if a full ROM were flashed via Download Mode with ODIN, using Factory Wipe and wiping the Dalvik Cache will return the system internal storage to that state. This does not affect the internal user storage space, however.
If you want to wipe everything from CWM, go into the Mounts and Storage and format every volume listed. If you read the Wipe Data/Factory Reset output, you'll see it actually formats most of the volumes for you. As I said, wiping the Dalvik cache along with the Factory reset will wipe everything necessary to return the phone to "stock"(and by stock, I mean stock for the ROM installed). This is the , in my opinion, most that is required for a fresh install of almost any ROM.

Just to clarify: what you did, the part about seeing the "downloading" thing where you can read the flash counter, that's download mode. You don't need to delete Odin to get into CWM, you just need to unplug your phone from any USB source (even if the cord's not plugged in on the other side). Then using the same button combo will get you into CWM, so long as you hold it for until CWM comes up.

Thanks for this info! I always wondered why some stuff gets deleted and some doesn't when doing a wipe data/factory reset in CWM.
I flashed Creepy's stock ROM/Kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181 from a rooted GB then started hearing issues about the UCLE5 stock kernel possibly damaging hardware. I panicked and looked for an immediate solution to flash another kernel. Most people seemed to be recommending Fluxxi and Siyah as custom kernels that work with ICS.
The process I used to flash fluxxi was through mobile odin as specified in creepy's guide. I extracted the zImage file and loaded it into mobile odin and clicked flash firmware. I went around and double checked on other forums and they all said you can flash kernel's without needing to flash a ROM as long as the kernel being flashed is supported.
I'm guessing the phone is bricked because it wont boot the ROM, the Samsung logo screen came up then nothing. I tried to look into it before making a thread, and found some posts suggesting to go into recovery mode and reset that way. I still have not touched it since it got stuck. I did not pull the battery out or try to power it off and it is currently sitting plugged in to keep power. But as there are issues with the UCLE5 kernel I just don't want to take any risks. I have no idea if the fluxxi flash was successful and I dont wanna reset with that kernel installed and create further problems.
At this point I just don't want to take risks with a faulty kernel that is still being investigated. Does anyone have any suggestions? I read that bricks are recoverable as long as you dont pull the battery.
Another thread? Please stop. Also, if you had done your homework you would have known that fluxxi is only available for aosp roms
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
Others have told you this before, but I'll reiterate it: Use CWM to flash things. It's the best way.
As for your current problem, it stems from the fact that you didn't fully read the Fluxi OP. It clearly states that it is only compatible with AOSP based roms, such as CM9 or AOKP, and not Samsung roms.
Can you boot into recovery? You know how to do this, right? Hold vol down + vol up + power button until recovery appears. Just download a different kernel and flash it from CWM. And read every single word of the opening post of the kernel's thread before you flash it.

Flash a rom
Sent from Team Pirate Headquarters
So your wifi is broken. But are you rooted, as you said that's what you're trying to accomplish? If so, what did you use to root? if you've got a custom kernel installed just flash anything you want in CWM.

I got my new refurbished phone today and I usually know how to do the whole root process crap, but somewhere along the lines, I must have rushed something. My Wi-Fi is broken. I'm guessing it had something to do with 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 and something to do with a build, but where do I go from here? I tried wiping and I also tried using the Odin 1 click to go back to stock, and it's still broken. Like wtf?
Currently on 2.3.4.

If you are still on "back to stock" UCKH7 then enter 3e recovery and do a wipe data/factory reset. I know you said you wiped before, but it looks like you did that before you flashed back to stock. So try the wipe again from 3e recovery, and if that does not solve the problem, then let us know as your issue is more serious.
simplicityy, pls do not complicate your life but simplify it by not flash anything.
You wouldn't ask and suffer with the "crap" if you didn't play with it
Here's the help, since you did not want to provide detail info, I assume you KNOW what have done correctly.
Advice, get into recovery, wipe data/factory reset and see if it helps.
I rooted using the back to stock thing, but then I searched tediously and flashed a siyah kernel just to get CWM on the phone.
As of right now, it's on stock UCKH7 but rooted, but without a custom kernel. And I tried wiping using 3e recovery. Wi-Fi still broken.

That advice has already been given, and tried. Also, I do not appreciate your condescending manner. I'm not stupid. Why do I flash stuff? Because I find it interesting and it's good knowledge to learn about, PLUS it helps me have a sexier phone.
As for detailed info, what more information would you want that would provide use?

Firstly, I didn't say you're stupid. I know you just want to make your phone pretty, that's why you complicated your life. You want to learn? Sure, read more, that's all I suggest. READ MORE =/= STUPID. If you don't want to read, but just flash then ask then it's your choice.
Secondly, brandon has asked you some info, you reply was "I don't remember". You don't remember what you have done, where you get from. That's a sign of problem, m8.
Anyway, I just gave you an advice, take it or leave it.
I'm out.

votinh wasn't helping. And he may not have DIRECTLY called me it, but it's implied with his reply and the stuff he's telling me. I don't want another flame war because of this crap. If you're not going to help, just don't post. That goes for everyone.
I appreciate people like creepyncrawly though. He actually tries to help without being a condescending asshole about it and making assumptions about me that aren't even true.
Update: Phone was on UCKH7, rooted, broken wi-fi. 3e recovery wipe didn't help. Flashed a siyah kernel through Odin, then flashed Phone bricker through CWM. Wi-Fi is still broken.

Not sure what would account for that. I would suggest that you flash stock again. You can choose either the straight stock, or the stock plus root. Redownload the install file of your choice just to make sure you have a good download. Download links are in the guides linked in my signature. Do a wipe data/factory reset both before and after you flash. (for good measure.)
If you still have no working wifi, then I would suggest you start taking steps to see if your hardware is malfunctioning. You might try flashing the full UCKH7 firmware package which includes bootloaders and param.lfs from the Download Repository. Or you might try flashing Entropy512's UCKK6 stock plus root firmware package. Or you might try flashing the UCLE5 stock plus root firmware package that is available in the development section. Remember to do a wipe data/factory reset before flashing any of these firmwares, but read the warnings in the UCLE5 thread.

You really should stop making new threads. The last ones ended with you calling people names and you flaming people that are giving you advice. You'd think since February that you would have learned not to flame people.

Just to make sure... and I suggest you not be derogatory towards me, but are you FULLY wiping before you flash? I know Wi-Fi being broken us common when rooting and wiping helps. Happened to me.

Obviously, the "if you aren't going to help, just don't post" didn't mean anything to you. And I like how you just ignore everything that was said. votinh didn't help. He didn't even READ the posts in the thread. He suggested something that was already suggested and tried, AND he started making assumptions and what he was implying was insulting. Nonetheless, you're in the same category as him. Done with you.

Depends what you mean by FULLY wiping. I wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache. If there's some other method of "fully wiping" that I don't know about, please do tell.
Update: I have re-downloaded the one click downloaders to go back to stock, rooted and unrooted. ( I tried both). Wi-Fi is STILL broken. This is getting annoying. It seems like nothing is working. Then again, I was never able to test out the Wi-Fi before I started rooting it. If it's a hardware error, I'm going to be pissed.
A full wipe includes the/system partition as well. Also what ROMS are you currently trying this with?

When I choose to flash a ROM, I flash phone bricker because I used Odin to flash a custom kernel to get CWM and then I use triangle away and flash back to ICScrewed 2.1 or unoriginal. Wi-Fi doesn't work at any moment, whether I am on 2.3.4, 2.3.6, stock, etc.
I still have yet to attempt flashing the second bootloader and param stuff creepyncrawly mentioned, but I've never done that and I know flashing that stuff can brick your phone, so I'm reading up on it so that I don't screw up.
After reading the forums (and google) for hours, I'm still at a loss how to recover my i777 phone. I followed the directions to the T at Galaxy2root.c o m. I attempted to upgrade from Gingerbread to JellyBean 4.2.1. I first rooted my phone using Odin3 1.8.5 and Zedomax ROM. I followed the instructions in the link above, clearing the cache, cleared Dalvik cache, factory reset (I did it in the phone, not through CWM which is where I may have messed up.) I did a backup with recovery mode to the sdcard then went through CWM recovery mode and loaded the AOKP's JB build 5.
Everything seemed fine until it got stuck in the JB animation boot screen and stayed there. At this point, I lost access to the CWM's recovery mode menu. At this point, Kies will not recognize my device when it's in Download mode. I flashed the phone with the Siyah 4.0.1 ROM but that caused more damage, being that the phone does not go past the boot animation.
Since I cannot get to recovery mode, how much trouble am I in and how to I fix it? ANY direction will be appreciated.

If you had Googled zedomax for the sgs2, you would have seen that that is where your problems began. It's known to cause problems for our device. I'll let the next guy help you out with fixing, as I have no clue.

you might have to go back to stock gingerbread 2.3.5 kk6 with odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432 and start from there again
Not to mention you never flashed a rom

Well that and he flashed a Rom that's not even for our phone. At least I've not seen aokp jellybean 5 anywhere here.or he's got a different phone model and doesn't even have an I777 at all and instead has the I9100 international version or a skyrocket.

First up, i am not much of an expert so you can consider me as more or less in your category.

Secondly, you said you read forums for hours.. then you obv didnt read here OR missed this stuff posted about a week back:

That really should have been a pointer.
I hope you ll take this as a big learning lesson and read about things after verification and attempt any rom flashing AFTER asking questions.
Wishing you luck.:good:
Thanks.
I can humbly say that my overconfidence and inexperience with flashing got me into a fix. I took tlopez1973's advice and followed the directions he sent me to. I flashed the ROM with stock Gingerbread 2.3.4, rooted it with Siyah, installed ICS stock and rooted it with siyah 4.0.4. Thanks a ton for the direction. I know now that the fine print is extremely important and definitely will be more diligent in comparing others' procedures when messing with kernals.

here's the biggest tip anyone here can give you, you're welcome:
If you didn't find it in xda, don't use it.
Glad you got everything working! Read the stickies here and search Google with "xda" after your query and you'll be fine!

Hey there,
Today I received an MHL-adapter for my Galaxy S3 and wanted to try it out. Since it didn't work in combination with Slim Bean I decided to flash another rom (more on the sammy side of things). Coming across a thread with a guy pointing out a so called Chameleon crossover rom, I decided to give it a go, downloaded and flashed it. I shat bricks as I saw that, in my euphoria to try the adapter, I flashed a rom that was meant to be for the Galaxy S2!
So I restarted into recovery and tried to perform a full wipe, which didn't work, because it wasn't able to load the partitions (data etc.) then I tried to flash on a recent backup of Slim Bean, which was only partly succsessfull, meaning, that it flashed but couldn't wipe because of the reason mentioned above.
Booting into system doesn't work either, I just get a bootloop.
Right now im not quite sure, which step to take. Shall i flash on a clean stock-image via Odin or maybe try out something like One-Click UnBrick?
All your help and suggestions are highly appreciated!

Thank you so much for the quick response, I'm going to check whether it works and report back after it's done! :good:
G'Luck
Problem solved, thanks rootSU!
So, if someone is following this thread, I just want to share with you guys what I did and how it turned out:
I flashed the original firmware, according to region etc. via Odin, the procedure was succsessfull and I rebooted.
At first I had a bootloop, so I went into the stock recovery and hit "wipe /data and /cache", which was succsessfull as well, meaning that the previous problem with not being able to mount the partitions was resolved. So I went ahead and rebooted again aaand it booted!
Everything is working fine as far as i can tell, no misfunctions, hot reboots or anything similar.
Thanks very much for the quick response rootSU, which prevented me from hyperventilating .
I've rooted, unlocked bootloader and flashed stuff on my former phones (Htc Wildfire, Galaxy S) and I've never done anything like that before and nothing like that ever happened to me. So to anyone reading this, I highly encourage you not to be as dumb as me and to doublecheck what rom you're flashing and not to flash while being overly exicted about anything .
Does your adapter now work?
