It seems that a subset of devices are slightly volatile when it comes to the mmc driver than CMW uses. I experienced this issue ages ago, and couldn't find a resolution that I could implement.
The newer versions of the ICS Kernels now use a different mmc driver and do not suffer this issue, so install Krabappel's SSSpeedKernel or Arakmar's Advance Stock Kernel and you'll be able to restore your backups.
Krab's is good as it's CWM flashable, so you can use CM9/10 and when you need to restore a backup flash Krab's Kernel, reboot, then restore and the backup will restore the former Kernel for you as well
EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure this is the wrong forum for this post, should be Q&A or General at the very most.
thank you sixdaysandy
i tried it and it works

I'm having a weird issue: after I restore my devoid backup my phone boots into lockscreen and then reboots and enters into a bootloop (lockscreen-reboot all the time).
I installed with amonra recovery, a while ago, a theme on this rom (can this be the source of the problem?). Installation was successful, I continued using the rom and made a backup with cwm5 before trying sonygenmod. Tried sonygenmod for a couple of days and now when I wanted to restore devoid this happened.
It's very annoying because I really want my data back... So help, please
Edit:
when I wipe data it says complete but I get an error: e:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
Edit 2:
how freakin' conveniant! I'm trying to restore an older backup of devoid and it says MD5 mismatch (backup made with cwm, restoring with cwm)
do a hard reset.
don't worry, your data is also backed up to your google account.

Not everything... I want some numbers from call logs, some text messages etc.
My apps are backed up with titanium and phonebook saved in SD, so those are not the problem.
Hey XDA,
I'm trying to backup my current ROM thru CWM Recovery and I get different errors from time to time: error backing up (either) /data, /sdcard/.android_secure or boot image.
How can I fix this? I need to backup to change ROMs
Thanks
I'm gonna bump this since it has had virtually NO attention and I'm in need of help
installl titanium backup for apps backup and mybackup root for sms, call logs
then change the rom and restore all apps + sms,logs,etc...
Flash another root and CWM kernel .

Using sk8's cwm I can't restore nandroids anymore. It always errors out saying that there was an error restoring /data. I'm about to go try TWRP, but I really prefer CWM and was wondering if anyone has encountered this before.
Thanks for the help!
Sorry to double post, but after trying twrp, my backups still don't work. They appear to be created fine, but when they are restoring they completely skip the data partition. I've already done the camera fix, so I'm not sure what else to do...
Today I decided to upgrade the cyanogenmod software of my girlfriend's phone. I did a android backup before doing it and I have it both on my SD card and on the phone. The upgrade went wrong (dont'know why i was having many crashes of some apps) so i decided to restore the android backup. I have tarp recovery and i'm having two problems. The first one is when I select MD5 check: it's written MD5 failed to match on... maybe because I followed the guide about creating an MD5 blank file ( I was having problems in matching MD5). When I uncheck the MD5 check box, the backup starts and it seems it works, but when I press reboot the system it says NO OS INSTALLED. I need some help please I've tried for two hours fixing it.
What partitions did you backup and try to restore? Sounds like /system or /boot didn't backup or restore properly. You could try to reinstall the original rom she was on and then do just a /data restore and see if that works. Other than that, either another rom or back to stock are the main options. What was going wrong on the new rom? Did you try to upgrade by dirty flashing - as in not wiping /data? Sometimes it also helps to format /system too when upgrading the rom to make sure there's nothing leftover. Also, getting the correct Gapps are important for everything to run correctly.
PS: I've been having some issues with backups in TWRP on my phone as well and wasn't able to restore /data and if I just choose to restore just boot and /system then it would at least boot backup and be usable. I'm not sure if this is a similar issue to yours or just phone specific.
"extractTarFork error 255" when restoring data partition from nandroid backup (TWRP)
I've just wiped my phone to get rid of a problem I was having. My first plan was to take a relatively recent full nandroid backup, wipe and restore to that point. Second plan was the wipe and flash my ROM again, and then restore /data.
My problem lies only with restoring the data partition of my nandroid backup. It gets some of the way through before producing the following error:
Code:
extractTarFork() process ended with ERROR: 255
I've tried using the built-in repair/resize partition tools, and using adb shell to e2fsck the relevant partitions (But I'm not sure if this made any difference). The problem persists when restoring the data partition with any backup, not just recent ones.
What should I do?
Thanks!

Bump? I've looked at responses to other people having these issues, but they're either not quite applicable, or don't appear to work for me.
Judging by how busy this sub-forum is, I'm guessing my post it too complex (or something) for it. I'll give it one more shot before finding another place on XDA and hoping it's more appropriate :/
This looks to be the most appropriate subforum. Bump.
