Hi,
Currently I have a Samsung Galaxy S III with the Android Revolution HD 9.0.0 and I want to upgrade to version 10.0.0 which is the current version. But I dont want to wipe my data to upgrade.
The reason for this is because even though i've backed up everything using titanium backup, I have a layout which I like and lots of other settings.
Is this possible?
Thanks.

Yes you can but if you hit problems you must wipe .
If you are currently running an ICS custom rom and the update is to a JB cumstom rom by the same maker then yes you still need to do a wipe.
But if you did a nandroid backup first before updating you could always try flashing the update without wiping but it could cause problems.
The devs always say to do a full wipe so that there are no problems
Hope this helped

Dont agree other wise we all have wiped phones when JB updates .
>>>>The devs always say to do a full wipe so that there are no problems
Usually they don't say full wipe but wipe cache and wipe dalvik .
Some custom roms will wipe above anyway .
My way on a new rom is to format cache and system in recovery only .
Means i just install on top of my data a new system .
But yes i have Nandroid and TB backup always and yes i am prepared if need be to go back to a stock rom after wiping the lot .
Yes i do flash a lot of roms and no i don't have many problems .

If you want to save your home screen just back up the touchwiz app and restore data to your new rom if you have to wipe

So you say that if I do a backup of all apps in TitaniumBackup and restore it after wipe it'll be ALL the same?
Like I never wiped?
Anyone?

CMIIW, in theory, yes. Although in my experience some apps/games data failed to load. But in most cases it gets the job done after flashing to a new rom, which needed you to wipe everything.
Yes applications go, but the data sometimes ne.Lépe every transition from ICS need to JB, download data again.
And can I restore data only from TitaniumBackup?

Regarding the layout, if you have nova launcher you can export your settings and restore after a flash of a new rom..

Don't have Nova Launcher- didn't like it.
I guess I'll just wipe cache then flash the new version ROM and hope for the best (after backups of course).

You can backup just the apps or apps+data. Therefore you too can restore your data only (if you already have that particular apps installed). Try it mate, titanium backup rules :good:

Proceed to recovery and flash it a second time and it should work. It might have to do with the CWM version you were running earlier.
Cheers!
SuperROM is only for i9100G!! While CheckROM is only for i9100!! You need to reflash superROM! Or at least to restore a backup...

That means look under your battery. What does the label there say for model? If it says "GT-I9100G", then you have to be MUCH more selective on what you flash to your phone.

No you can't. That's also for I9100 ONLY.
Thanks to all for help..
I've got a question about changing ROMs also. I'm currently on LeoMar75 Rom Revolution v2.4 and I'd like to change to the newest CheckROM.
From reading the thread, the process is:
Titanium backup
CWM backup
Get into the CWM recovery
Wipe Data/factory reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik-Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Wipe Data/factory reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik-Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Install the wipe version of this ROM
My questions:
1. What does a titanium backup do?
2. What does a CWM backup do?
3. Where are the backup files stored? Do I need to copy these backup files to my computer?
4. What do I do after I've installed the new ROM? How do I restore my backups?
5. What do the backups actually restore? Will I automatically get all my apps back? Will I keep my user data (e.g. text messages, whatsapp logs, high scores in games, photos, etc)?
I've looked around a lot but and I can see a lot of people saying these same steps but I can't seem to find a description of what they actually do
I appreciate your time, thanks guys!

Differences between CWM backup aka Nandroid backup and Titaium Backup
First of all , Nandroid Backup is NOT an app. You will have an option of a FULL backup of your phone as it is condition at time of backup using a BACKUP choice in ClockworkMod recovery. Your backup here is often called a Nandroid backup . All your phone's data, apps, settings, roms, kernel etc is FULLY 100 % backup, Under this ClockworkMod recovery you will also have option to RESTORE 100 % the phone status
Titanium Backup is an APP which requires phone to be rooted. You can use TB to backup all your apps and its associated data. You ONLY can use TB in a working phone . You can't restore anything from TB if your phone crashes and cannot be rebooted. TB does not backup your kernel/roms.

Hi Guys,
I'm new in the android world and exploring around with custom roms. however i want to return back to a stock rom. Now i was wondering how can i do that without loosing any of my data e.g. sms, photos, save game data etc. can i return to stock using the same method going into a custom rom, using CMW just wipe dalvik cache and install rom? and will this also flash my kernel back to stock as well?
After returning to stock i will just root that and flash counter isn't an issue i have purchased Triangle Away
Thanks
You can`t, you can however copy your files to your pc and place them back after the flash.I`am using Appmonster pro to restore apps from sd to restore my apps if i`am not rooted.
You can also flash a stock rom and still keep root with MobileOdin Pro.

If you do a system upgrade it`s best to to a data/factory reset and wipe cache and dalvik cache, you don`t have to but it may result in crashings apps and system components. As fot the sms i don`t know, look in the playstore for an app for that. If you want to stay rooted backup users apps with Titanium Backup. and restore them after the flash, don`t know if texts are restored however.

It backs up everything, it will basically cryogenically freeze your version of Android as it is for later use. So yeah, if you don't like ROM x you restore ROM y from nandroid

2. To remove root you need flash stock firmware (I think)

1. nandroid backup is backup everything
2. yes you can, if don't want that custom rom, just restore the nandroid backup you make
A NANDroid backup does not include the EFS, however, and you will want to back up that up in case your IMEI ends up getting lost. (Grab kTool from the Play Store)
Also not included in a NANDroid backup is the modem and kernel. These don't require you to back them up yourselves, as you can find stock kernels on the Internet (and modified ones) as well as the modems, but it's worth noting that some unofficial ROMs do tend to flash these as a part of their install process

Music to my ears :thumbup::thumbup:
I use Nandroid backup as a method to save all my folder and apps layout ,
flash a new rom just format cache and system .
That gives me my layout plus the new rom works 99% of the time if upgrading to similar roms even moving from LF2 to LG8 .

Nandroid backups your system data cache and boot partition this means after restore you will get everything same as old times but you can't go back from aosp roms because they use mtd partition type but samsung roms use bml you have to flash stock rom from odin and then restore when you want to come back from aosp/cm based roms

same here, but seems to be different with the s3, but there might be some problem between different versions of cwm recovery, that might be the problem..if you backed up on touch say..then tried restoring from 5.c.x.x?
When we reboot into cwm recovery to install our selected roms, do i need to wipe the data and cache AFTER or BEFORE i install the roms / gapps that i want to? Need help here !
- One more, those who are experience like me when i installed (cm10 port by Psyke) noticed that music app does scan SD card, but then no songs are shown when the app launches, thus leaving it to be blank / left only symbols at on top of the screen . Is really music doesnt work yet for the beta release? thanks for any response

If it's the next version of the current Rom you have, then wiping /data and /cache partitions is not nessesary. If it is an entirely different Rom then you should do a wipe as the phone won't boot properly.
As for your second query, a temporary solution is to use a different media played. I had the same problem with the initial cm10 builds for the galaxy s3.

Wiping /data and /cache doesn't wipe your sdcard content. It only wipes your installed apps and its data.
Doing a wipe before and after doesn't matter. But generally we do it after flashing a ROM.

You can restore the backup with out data wiping since cwm recovery wipes /data and /cache before restoring a backup.
