[Q]how do I install kernal w/S-ON viper4g - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I'm S-ON with hboot 1.19 and twrp. Tried installing viper4g but WiFi wouldnt work because kernal did not install. I know xhaus has a method for kernal installer for S-ON but reading thru that thread and the viper4g thread I could not figure out how to do it. Could someone explain this process?

easiest way is to use flash image gui from google play. Not sure though as I think that rom runs off the old base and you seem to be running the new one

Not entirely sure but I think viper uses the work around for the kernel. Try flashing normally and if you can't start android, go back and fastboot flash the kernel

fastboot flash boot boot.img
extract the boot.img from the zip and put it in a location easy to get to, like the same place fastboot is at

More questions about hboot 1.5

Sorry, newb here!
So I'm a lil confused about hboot 1.5 :
Can I flash Roms using Flash Image GUI? Any?
And how?
When do i need to use fastboot?
I don't want to use my pc at all, or the less possible tbh.

You can flash roms using a computer with no issues lol using fastboot boot recovery.img in hboot with ADB.. You have to put a copy of your recovery.img in your adb folder for this method to work not hard at all.
You can use flash GUI to flash kernels and flash the rom in recovery .... You may wanna read up on the guy that made the app he has instructions...
I have used the app in the past not a bad thing to have... Tho I prefer using the computer always a one stop shop for me

Yeah but i travel a lot and don't have time to use my laptop, thanks anyways! Didn't know that!

Just download from the market the Flash GUI app and you can flash any boot.img (kernel) first and then flash the ROM and you should be all set.
Yes, if you travel alot then Flash Image GUI would be for you.
the pg86100 is the htc evo 3d if i am not mistaken and i have one and have hboot 1.5 also, i see you have boot manager listed as one of your apps. you can use this app as well with hboot 1.5 and still flash your heart away just make sure you unlock the bootloader via HTC's method and have root access and youll be good to go
Thanks guys, another question, whats the best recovery for hboot 1.5?
thats is all what you like to use... i personally use the clockworkmod recovery version 4.0.1.4

I found this video tutorial online of a guy rooting hboot 1.50 and at the end he flashes a Rom I believe Synergy 3.0 without using fastboot from the computer. He went into recovery and just flashed like normal. He said S-on doesn't mean anything. Unless you're flashing a kernel. Is he right?

i know with my evo 3d you can flash and rom from the recovery ... you just save the rom in its zip format to your sdcard and when in recovery mode that i use i just select " install zip from sdcard" and guide it to said rom then once selected it will begin an install process... now keep in mind that if your info is not backed up you will lose it... and you can still use the kernel that comes with the rom to flash it is just the same... it should be in the boot.img area of the rom you saved

It's essentially a snapshot of your current phone. In case that new kernel or rom put you in a bootloop or you wanna revert back.

you definitely do not need that app if youre flashing roms only...just keep a back up in case the rom is no good then you have the original to go back to

[Q] Brand New EVO 3D with 1.40 boot! Root help please?

Ok, I have been reading all day and have noticed alot of new Evo 3d's being sold at sprint stores with the 1.40 h-boot. I noticed because I was one of the lucky ones to get one today!
There is alot of information on this forum, almost to a fault, because most of it is for 1.50 h-boot phones. I am pretty new to rooting, so be gentle.
So, here is what I would like to accomplish with my root.
My confusion lies it the area of recovery. I have read a few guides on here and this one seems to be the one I keep coming back to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196131&highlight=guide
I know I need to do Revolutionary S-OFF & Recovery tool. Part of this process involves downloading and installing Clockwork Mod Recovery (CMR).
Then the guide tells me to install another recovery, Team Win custom recovery Project (TWRP) + Eng H-boot.
Now, the recovery I would like to use is 4ext Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1560279
So, am I flashing 3 different recovery's? Or, do I just flash the 4ext instead of the CMR/TWRP?
My endgame is to flash MeanROM which is a 2.17.651.5 base firmware. But, my phone has a 2.3.3 firmware on it (kernel 2.6.35.10, build# 1.13.651.7), so I will have to upgrade my firmware to the newer version, correct?
Any help or steps to get me started would be awesome!
TIA
Root that bad boy with unrevoked just Google search it.

Thanks...
I won't have a prob doing the root, steps seem easy for the actual root process... via revolutionary.
My issue is the recovery I want to use and the steps to get the rom I want going.
Recovery is simple just download twrp or ext4 the info is in the threads bro over by dev section

You may have to use cwm or TWRP temporarily in order to flash SuperUser to gain root access. The 4ext updater app will flash 4ext for you, I just can't remember if it requires su access but I believe it does. Switching recoveries is easy pezy... Don't sweat it man.
And yes you will want to update tour firmware via BOOTLOADER. Freeza has an all in one firmware update package that works nice.

CWM 4.0 works like a champ
Have a look at Closeone's downgrade tool thread , Post #3 specifically, and start at step 23 since you have Hboot 1.40 & already have fw 1.13.651.7. At the end of it ate some additional resources for 2.17 rooted Roms & the radio update.
Basically run revolutionary for s-off, install any recovery (4ext or cwm 4.0.1.4 recommended), run xhausx's 2.17.651.7 radio only update, format system data & cache (or superwipe), flash MeanRom.

I'm guessing not the TWR, but what about the Eng hboot thing?
Thanks.

In that eng hboot guide you should do up to step 5 to get s-off & cwm recovery v4.0.1.4. Yes, u need HTC drivers & usb debugging enabled.
You don't need eng Hboot, Revolutionary will install a fully working hboot 1.40.0011. You can try that one out later if u need more advanced options.
After the radio update, If you want 4ext Recovery, you have to boot the OS, and install the android app which will install the actual recovery, replacing Cwm if you loaded it when asked by Revolutionary's process.

I'll be flashing here in a few, I'll keep posted on my progress.

There really isn't a need to flash Su since it's included in MeanRom (you can if you want it included in a backup).
Also see my 2.17 Based Rom Links post for the radio update before meanrom (Listed at the bottom on Closeone's 3rd post)
Ya, I did the SU so I could have a clean stock, rooted nand backup.
Everything went smooth as butter! Phone is running MeanROM and very fast. It is a clean stock rom. I'm diggin' it.
I didn't notice any beats audio menu or any way to see if it's actually there even? Is it just there and ya dont see it? I see dsp manager baked in...
Well, anyways, thanks for all the help! I'm up and running all thanks to the help here!

It's there when you play music inside the HTC Music app, won't work with Bluetooth though (see recent post in MeanRom thread). Ziggy kernel (default in current meanrom) doesn't have 100% Beats even though most "Beats Features" are a part of the Rom. Chad Goodman's kernel, Anthrax RLS8 Final, has Full beats support (if you can tell the difference).

Bootloops on any JB rom

Ok, I am banging my head against the wall trying to figure this damn issue out. I have s-off via the Wiretrick method. I have tried 1.04 ENG, Juopunutbear's 1.50, 1.57, and 1.58, and Revolutionary hboot 1.40 Hboots. They were all flashed via the boot loader. I am running the latest 4ext recovery, and before that I was running TWRP 1.1.1. I seem to be able to boot into ICS roms just fine, (Harmonia and DigitalHigh MIUI) How ever though, I can not get booted into any Jellybean rom I try. I've tried Slimbean, AOKP, and DigitalHigh Miui JB. Wtf am I doing wrong, and how do I go about fixing it?
Thanks,

Did you do the "fix everything" thread?
Here's what I would recommend:
1. Flash the VM RUU.
2. Boot into the stock ROM and download and flash the OTA.
3. Flash a custom bootloader (JBear 1.50.5050 works well with both 4EXT and TWRP)
4. Use fastboot to flash 4EXT or recovery
5. Format "all partitions except SD card" in 4EXT
6. Flash and boot whatever AOSP based ROM you want
If you can't get the OTA via "System updates" in settings after flashing the RUU, follow the instructions for S-OFF users in this post to download and install it.
I think that will fix your booting problems. If all that works and you prefer TWRP you should be able to flash 2.3.3.0 after performing the above steps and still flash and boot most ROM's successfully.

That might work if you install the HTC drivers but this is probably a better way:
1. Download the VM RUU.exe to a Windows virtual machine.
2. Use the method in this post to extract the rom.zip file and rename it to PG86IMG.zip.
3. Flash the RUU from your current bootloader.
The rest of the steps should be doable on Linux as long as you have the ADB/fastboot directory setup.
BTW, as soon as you mentioned Harmonia I knew you have an Evo V 4G since nobody uses that on the Evo 3D.

Yes, but if you are s-off, you'll remain that way. Then you can just flash a custom hboot and recovery and then ROM and you're set. If your s-on, you'll have to reroot after unlocking through HTCdev.

There is no need to root the stock ROM unless you want to nandroid it that way.
Since you are S-OFF and have unlocked the bootloader (or if you flashed a custom bootloader) you can use the "fastboot boot recovery recovery.img" command to flash your custom recovery, then wipe and flash a custom ROM. Make sure to flash an hboot lower than the stock 1.58 version before flashing a JB ROM.

No, but here's a guide you can use instead.
As to what causes it, nobody has identified the specific reason, but in general terms it seems to be caused by mixing and matching various firmware and ROM updates.
It's like the GB and AOSP ROM's not booting with the stock (1.57/1.58) hboots. Nobody has identified why they don't work so we just downgrade them to work around the problem.

I've been a Sprint user for a long time so I don't know what's involved in flashing the Evo 3D to Boost, but here's a post from a Cricket user that might help.
Anything you do to modify your phone is at your own risk so you will need to decide if it is safe or not. I suggest using Google to get more feedback about using the RUU when when flashed to another carrier.

Cannot Boot Into ROM

I think I've done it this time. I was able to unlock the bootloader and also able to put TWRP recovery onto the phone. The mistake I made was trying to flash MIUI to the phone without backing anything up, so here I am and have been for the last 4 hours trying to figure out how to get my phone to boot into a ROM of any sort to try and S-OFF using the FacePalm method.
I honestly don't know what I should do at this point. I can still enter recovery and flash ROMs. Just, none of them actually load. The only time I can get any of them to load is when I flash it via recovery, then flash the boot.img via fastboot. However, when I do it this way, my touch screen within the ROM no longer works. So I can't press or do anything, to give my phone super user permissions. I'm really frustrated and just want to fix my phone. Can anyone offer some help or advice so I can try and fix this sometime between now and my death?
Thank you in advance.

Check the link in my sig. Should answer most of your questions regarding your issues.
You are S-on, most likely on Hboot 1.15 or newer. You have to flash the kernel separately from the ROM for the ROM to boot when you are S-on. This is why fastboot flashing the kernel (boot.img) worked.
Regarding your other issue, it sounds like you have the updated touch panel driver that came with the most recent OTA. You need to use TWRP 2.4+ and you can only run ROM's that are software version 3.16. Once you get S-off you can downgrade the driver and run whatever ROM you want

Thank you for your reply and help.
I'm running HBOOT 2.09 to be exact. I'm also running TWRP 2.5, so I'm good there as well. Right now I can't boot into a ROM appropriately to achieve S-OFF. I tried creating a Ubuntu Live CD and the Kernel got messed up I guess when putting it on the disc. That was another frustration of mine, lol. I can't achieve the FacePalm method because I can't boot into a ROM to adb shell as super user, since it physically needs to be accepted on the phone.
I'm going to read what you suggested, though, perhaps that will give me the answer.
Edit: I'm going to go with your suggestion of flashing a ROM that's made for 3.16, and see if my touch panel works so I can S-OFF and flash whatever I want. I'll let you know how that goes.

What ROM are you trying to run? If it isn't based on software version 3.16 it WON'T WORK.

Just edited my post. I'm an idiot and didn't completely read your post. My apologies. I'm in the process of getting Viper4G at the moment, to try and achieve S-OFF.

I was able to get into Viper, tried doing the FacePalm S-OFF and it wasn't successful, for whatever reason. However, at least I'm better off than I was before. Any suggestions from here? I really want to get MIUI on this and not really feeling up to installing Ubuntu tonight.
If not, I really want to thank you. At least I'm able to use my phone again, lol.

Return to Stock OTA

I am selling one of my Rezounds I need to return it to mostly stock.
Before installing the latest Infection rom I was on the current OTA rom. Basically I think all I need to do is reflash the stock recovery image and the current OTA rom and if needed go back to locked. Problem is, I don't have a copy of the recovery.img from the current OTA rom. Can anybody link me to it. Thanks
Sent from my Infected Rezound
Here is a post with the full OTApkg.zip for 4.05.605.14:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40757466&postcount=19
If you extract the firmware.zip, there is the recovery.img which you can either put into a custom ph98img.zip and run in hboot or flash it from your computer using adb stuff. I recently had to restore my Rez back to stock as it is getting returned to Verizon for a replacement. I used the ph98img route to reinstall recovery after unrooting. I also then had to S-on the phone so I had to make sure it was bone stock so the S-on didn't brick it.
ETA: I'm not sure if that full OTApkg.zip will be enough to get you back to stock but what I had done in the past was to flash this stock rooted rom with Amonra 3.16 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40941755&postcount=1 ( I was already on 4.05.605.14), do the full unroot option using the supersu app that was already there, and then flash the stock recovery and I was back to fully stock.

Any chance your phone was S-off?

Thanks... I am S-ON but that should really be all I need... I don't really need to go 100% pure stock, but if I can get it close that will work. Replacing the recovery image and leaving it S-ON, then flash the Stock OTA Rooted ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260154 and I think I will be close enough to sell it. If someone wants it with a custom ROM I can just leave TWRP and Infection, or whatever ROM they want, but I just need a quick option to return to "stock" if the buyer wants.

You may want to flash the rooted stock before replacing the recovery back to stock. I don't know if the stock recovery will allow it...

The beauty of being unlocked is it doesn't matter... All I need to do is go into fastboot and use "fastboot boot recovery.img" for TWRP and I can flash anything, irregardless of what the installed recovery allows. But thanks for the warning, this is probably what I would do anyway.
Doh!, I completely forgot about that way... Yup, that would work as well
I'm trying to give this phone to my buddy. Haven't used it since I got the S4, and he is still using a Dinc. I tried what was listed here, but it's only made things worse. I was on Stock 4.03.605 (leaked Global RUU) unlocked, rooted, s-on. I tried updating the firmware with the OTAzip. I made the PH98IMG.zip, and ran it through the bootloader. It only updated Hboot from 2.7 to 2.8. It did NOT give me 4.05.605 like I was looking for. I tried to run the Global Stock rom but got stuck in a white HTC screen. The only thing I can make work right now is a viperrom, but wifi will not turn on. I was hoping to give this to him as close to stock, but without wifi, it's not going to be very useful.
Currently I have it locked s-on with stock recovery, but I can unlock and put amon ra back on it. I use a mac so commands are a bit different for me, but I know the basics and what to on the mac (mostly). Any help would be appreciated. I tried to run the leaked global RUU again to reset it, but because the Hboot updated, it won't run it. I can't find an RUU for 4.05.605

My circumstance was very specific, this thread was not really intended to be a guide to take any version of software to another, I already had the firmware (HBoot & radios) for 4.5.605.14, just needed a few pieces to get back to "stockish"... There are other ways to return to stock for different software versions and this thread doesn't address any of those.
The OTApkg.zip is only for going from 3.14.605.13 to 4.5.605.14, no other combinations of versions will work properly. I am surprised that HBoot updated... what radios are you on now? If the radios updated then you might be OK, you can just unlock, then fastboot boot recovery.img of TWRP and flash in the stock/rooted 4.5.605.14 ROM (NOT an RUU, but just the ROM), otherwise you could be in a situation where you need to S-OFF and flash radios and tweak from there. If your HBoot updated then the leaked RUU won't work either, you could be in a tight spot.
BTW, the reason Viper won't work is you likely have a kernel mismatch, to install a ROM on an S-ON Rezound you need to flash the boot.img separately, that is where the kernel is, but that also requires you to be unlocked by HTCdev.

Damn....I have tried to flash the kernel (boot.img) through the fastboot command, but it never works right and leaves me stuck with a white HTC screen. Again, if it's bricked, it's not the end of the world for me as I upgraded to the S4, but my buddy was looking forward to 4g.
Basebands are 2.23.10.0123r, and 2.23.10.0124r
Well I think you're in luck, you have the firmware for the latest software installed... hboot and radios match for 4.5.605.14, all you need now is to unlock and flash a correct ROM! Working so I can't grab link right now, just get unlocked via HTCdev and post when that's done... all isn't list yet!

If you wish..
Actually installing a custom recovery is not required as long as you can fastboot boot the recovery image.
Did you want to return to mostly stock, or did you want to run a custom ROM like Infection Or something else?

I was looking for stock. 4.05.605 is ideal so he can play with it if he wishes. I don't want to have to field questions once its his. I don't mind helping him, but I don't want to cause him issues he's not looking for.
I have the image downloaded. How do I fastboot boot the recovery? Just ./fastboot boot recovery.img (as i have renamed the img as recovery.img)
Use this one

I tried this earlier, but I get the white HTC screen lockup. When you say extract boot.img, you mean unzip the download, pull out the boot.img and put it in my android folder to fastboot flash correct? The command I use is ./fastboot flash boot boot.img. It appears everything works, but it never boots. Just gets stuck in the white screen.
I'm downloading it now, should be about 14 more minutes. I will try it all again, and see what happens. Fingers crossed. let me know if my commands are wrong or I'm missing anything. the ./ is needed for mac.
If you load TWRP via Fastboot boot it will flash boot.img for you, if you load if from hboot you have to flash manually.
Before flashing ROM, download and flash the CleanWipe x5 script found in a thread on the development forum.

That works, just requires extra steps. I don't flash recovery anymore, you can go into fastboot on the phone, then execute fastboot boot recovery.img from PC, this gives an unlocked HTC phone temporary S-OFF saving steps of flashing boot.img seperately and avoiding the dreaded Tampered flag (if it hasn't been set).
Lots of ways to skin a cat I guess.

You need to extract the recovery.img file from the TWRP zip and put it in the fastboot directory.
