Hey galaxy s2'ers!!
I am the owner of a HTC HD2 that has been my pride and joy for a long time. However recently its mini-USB port and GPS broke/failed on me and I decided to move on.
I'm looking for a phone I can keep for a couple of years and it must have decent camera, battery life and good GPS reception. Games/3D performance tends to be rather secondary to me.
I checked with my carrier and I can get a brand new 16GB Galaxy S2 for about 200€. There is a more or less similar question to this one here in the forum but do tell me what you think: is the GS2 a good buy these days and for this price?
Thank you!
Yes.Buy 10 of them, keep 1 and stick the other 9 on eBay-youll make a killing.Ones with broken screens sell for that!

I actually like Nexus' slight curvature on the frontal plane but the lack of expansion ports is a deal breaker..
Thanks for the input guys
But whats the total cost/contract.I only buy new unbranded ones and get a sim deal separately. It works out more but I can put it through my business.
Is your deal the phone and minutes etc for the 200 euros.
If it is then buy as much as you can, stick em on eBay and chuck the sims

You bet, it is! I just bought a SGS2 4 months for now, and I am completely satisfied and overwhelmed with it. It has the best package for an Android phone. Tons of modifications depending on your taste, and a very powerful hardware that can run almost every app & games. The only phone I would consider to replace my SGS2 is non other han its successor.
Reference: I've constantly checked other Android phones to compare, but nothing beats this beast from what I see.
Go for S III, or Nexus or S II,
If you want to fully Customise your device go for SII or SIII
If not, other variants of S II Like S II X or HD LTE SGH - I757M have greater Hardware 1.5 Ghz i think.

Samsung already denied the rumors of S4. It's waste of time to wait for it, go for the Galaxy Nexus if you care for updates and wants to use stock rom.

You bet I'm still here: thanks for the input guys! I'm having a meeting with my carrier agent - or whatever you call it - to discuss what phone I'll be getting: I share a professional plan with other colleagues so I get to chose a new phone for a low cost from time to time.. hence the 200€ :victory:
don't worry about sgs2, it definitely worth the money since this great phone beat iphone 4s last year. if you are looking for more budget android smartphone, get sgs2 since the price drop a lot since the launch of sgs3. well, if you can afford sgs3, i will recommend it. :good:
i have been using my sgs2 for almost 6 months now, i wanna say that i am more happy to continue to be with my baby. sgs2 get most of the android update, and i just flash a jelly bean ROM.
sgs2 is more easier to root, to customize, to tweak compare to HTC (where you need the whatever S-OFF thing). i almost kill my friend HTC phone by just trying to S-OFF it. stupid bootloader.
conclusion, if you want cheaper, daily use phone, you can go for sgs2. if you want newer phone, get sgs3 or galaxy note 2.:good: just get samsung phone, you get tonnes of tutorials, guides here.

There has been 1 week since I bought my Galaxy S2 and I'm telling you. I love every bit of it. EVERYTHING. The camera, the screen, design, the UI and everything. Having said that, though the reason why I'm in love with it is maybe because my older phone was only a Samsung Galaxy Mini.
i don't know about you, but I think you can't get a better phone with that price (200€). I got mine for €220 and I don't regret any cent spent on it.
worth all that money and much more.
good for you ^^ enjoy every bit of it. like my s2. i am still not bored of it since JB is here for s2 as well ^^

O'hoy there mates!
I've been comparing the Sensation XE and the Galaxy Nexus, and now I've decided to go for the Nexus, since I prefer the display and UI over the 0.3 Ghz and the 3 extra MP. Even though I'm actually a huge HTC fan and love Sense, I'm just stunned by the Nexus.
BUT, I was wondering if it is "too late" to purchase a Samsung Galaxy Nexus?
Sure, it won't matter if a slightly better phone turns up, but if a "kiss-my-ass-nexus"-phone turns up just the day after, I'd be sad .
And I guess it will still take some time for phones with the Tegra 3 to turn up, right?
I would make the purchase at the 24th (payday ), but I suppose I could wait a day or two if a something-out-of-the-ordinary-awesome-phone turns up .
Regards!
i have a nexus and love it, one thing to consider though is that nexus phones have an extremely high resale value as long as you keep them in good shape.

I'm really glad you asked this as I am upgrading to my first smartphone on the 15th and have had my eyes set on the Galaxy Nexus. That being said I want to get something that'll last me 2 years as I'm not the type to dish out the ridiculous amounts of money to upgrade early or buy without a 2 year contract discount. From reading things, I shouldn't worry about purchasing a Galaxy Nexus. Thank you
i quit my purchase , ill wait the S III
I agree. It's certainly not too late to buy one. Most phones last for at most 2 years these days, and then it's time to upgrade. For sure, the Nexus will still be considered one of the best phones within these 2 years.

wait for the galaxy S3!!! or buy the htc one x... and if u dont like both of them, then buy the xperia s
Dont stay with the "old galaxy s2". its maybe the best phone out there, but its definitly worth it to wait for the upcoming smartphones
depends really.. S3 price is probably gona be really close to 600euro and right now the S2 price is around 450 - 500euro which is 100euro lower.. if your budget allows you to buy S3 right off the release day then yea wait for it... but if your budget doesnt allow that then dont wait for S3 to lower it's price.. because you will miss out all of the fun..
The HTC One S is selling on presale for around e479, it will be released next week vs the SGS2 for around 409. With the one s you will get qHD amoled vga on the GS2, 16GB vs 8 GB of storage, working ICS with Sense 4 and ARM A15 processor vs ARM A9 of the SGS2. That's a lot more you get for almost the same price....
Thank you all for the helpful replies but I think I'm going to get the galaxy s 2 as my budget wont be enough to get a galaxy s 3 soon as it comes out. Another thing is would Samsung be still supporting the galaxy s 2 with ics and other major updates?
Edit: for those suggesting me the HTC's I'm sorry but I am not a big fan of htc phones and will not be an option for me to get

thats what i think..... lets see
they announce it sometime in may... that 2 months
usually they release after 2 - 3 months thats 4 - 5 months
released in one location as a start say UK first so another 1 month or more to global.
so basically 6 months.... allthat if announced in may...
now US launch may take more......
Mate if you are hellbent on buying S2 then buy I9100 as it has the most dev support.
However dont count on Samsung giving you major updates.
They did a major **** up with the ICS update.
F*ckin retards couldnt even get out a proper stable release.
Anyway I dont think we will get JB officially.
I love what they did with the phone, they maxed it out on hardware and released with ultrastable GB stock rom.
I just dont like Samsung as a company and their BS support.
to be honest.. samsung isnt really helping dev development. so i dun like samsung now anymore.. gonna move to sony next phone ..

Coming to the end of my GS2 contract next month. Is the GS3 still worth upgrading to 5 months since its release? Is there anything else forthcoming that I should be watching out for instead perhaps?
If it comes down to it, I could quite happily continue with my GS2 for the time being. I'm thinking that in not so many months the GS4 will be released.
What do you reckon?
I would get the note 2 if I were you. It's going to be released shortly, that way you're getting the quad core processor plus 2GB of ram, that will make for a more future proof device...
Enviado de meu GT-I9300 usando o Tapatalk 2
It's definitely worth buying. It's still easily the best phone out there. Maybe the LG Optimus G might be better in a few ways, but the amount of dev work on this model will be unmatched.
I don't see any point waiting for GS4 as there is quite a long way to go before that comes out.
Well, it's not really that long if we're looking at a May release. That's 7 months after my contract runs out. Might be tempted if I can get a very good deal from my operator.
No doubt about the development scene on both the GS2 and the GS3. Seems much better than any of the similar models out there (latest HTCs etc).
Galaxy Note is out of the question. It's MASSIVE.
I think you should upgrade to s3 or wait for the note2

Thank if it helped. It's there for a reason
I was happy with my GS1. Only got GS3 as was given free by my boss. I was gonna wait for Note2. If I had a complaint it would be the WiFi acting up (losing internet connection) and over sensitive volume buttons (but that could be my gel case).

No. No, no, no.
Why do people insist on making stuff up.
The next nexus will be announced when the next android update is announced, that's how they always do it.
This years nexus device/os update combo was jellybean and the nexus 7.
Do you think Google are gonna release anothwr nexus device in jellybean? Or that they are going to announce an os update in december?

It is hard to say how future-proof SGS3 will be if you put things that way.
5 Months? New and better devices will come from different brands and types.
The question is, do you need to get one now or do you prefer to wait?
If I feel it correctly, SGS4 will come probably about in 12 months from now.
Note 2 will come in the next 1-3 months (about 5 months since SGS3 launch)
Next Nexus device? Dunno for sure but it will come also probably by end of this year.
SGS3 is the best phone out there right here right now and not 5 months later.
You could find always somet'in newer and better with time.
My opinion about the my SGS3 future-proof, it can hold on for 2 years from now without any problem
I don't think it's worth upgrading from the s2 to the s3. If i were you i would tweak the s**t out of the s2 then get the s4 when it'll be out.
I read the OP better.
If you can change the phone at little or no cost the s3 is the best choice right now. The note 2 is a nice device, but it's too big in my opinion.
The reason why I would upgrade is the 4.8 hd screen which is pretty nice, but if I compare my galxy s3 with s2 it has almost same speed

After owning the s3 for about 2 months. i can perfectly say that this is the best android phone available right now. If you want a phone thats will knock out every other mobile in the market get the s3.
I would suggest waiting for the release of the updated version of the S3 which has LTE (international version) and 2GB RAM compared to 1GB on the current i9300.
If you don't care about LTE and the extra 1GB of RAM, it's still worth waiting as the current version of the S3 should fall in price.
I have used Galaxy S , S II and SIII. Each one is worth every penny spent on it.
No existing device is better than SIII.
I you want to wait there will always be a qeue of more powerfull device coming and you will never be able to decide.
I had been with my S II for exactly 9 months when the S III was released. I wrote here on XDA that I'd never move up to the S III because it wasn't worth it...
... that lasted until I played with the phone for 5 minutes in a store. I bought mine in the same day and don't regret a bit.
Get it, man! It will be the best phone you'll ever have.
Get it. I love my S3. Waiting for jelly bean.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I've used SGS I, skip the SGS II, and now using the SGS III.
(Monster) Specs aside, the one thing why I decided to go with SGS III, and not it's competitor, is because I know it'll be a popular device like its predecessors.
From my experience using SGS I (a device I bought 2 years ago) popularity also contributed to your phone "lifespan". No official ICS or JB for i9000, but because it's popularity you'll find abundant custom rom with gazillion tweaks, mods, and kernel for it in community support forum like XDA.
Beside's that, I'm already quite familiar with the SGS environment such as the 3 magic combo, Odin, etc. Too lazy to learn from the start if I chose another phone
Wait for the i9305 (S3 international Lte)
It will probably be a bit pricier than the current 500€ for the i9300 but comes with 2GB Ram and an additional Lte modem.
Btw the i9000 has Jellybean through Cm. Just not official crappy-touchwiz jellybean =)

I'm planning to buy my first Android phone and I've chose then Samsung Galaxy S2. You're from India, right? Right now there's about a 12K price difference between the S2 and S3. So I'm assuming price will play a pretty big part in deciding on a phone. The S2 as of now probably has the most support amongst all android phones while the s3 support is comparatively still in a nebulous stage. Having said that, most devs who're working on the S2 now seem to slowly be moving towards the S3..So S3 dev support will only improve with time. The S2 is definitely getting the next iteration of android. But that'll probably be it. So it should be good for the next couple of years at the very least. but beyond that..who knows. Its like comparing the where the s2 is now to the galaxy s.
If your pocket allows it, go with the s3, else the s2 is still right up there with the best IMO.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Its like this. If you want a good phone where you can do anything one can do, and still not be very expensive, go for the S2. You can do everything with that phone. No limitations whatsoever. Good camera, good looking, not so big, and very smooth with enough space for installing apps.
If you want an awesome phone and expensive one, go for the S3, but you would still find everything you do on S3 also in S2. No major differences in there, except the price.
And I am sure with the latest and upcoming Jelly Bean update the S2 will become and even better phone. I really hope that they will also update it with the latest TouchWiz 5 UX Nature interface. If Samsung does that, I will not envy my father for having an S3 at all.
I have both phones in my home and the only major differences between S2 and S3 are on the interface, and the display. S3 has a much much better display and the latest TouchWiz interface is very cool.
Hope I helped in your decision.
Thanks Haxtream, Agonn that really helped. One last question! The HTC One S is from the same category as the S2 right? But in India HTC is lauching it with S3 snapdragon processor overclocked at 1.7ghz instead of the new S4 Krait architecture chip. Its only 3k more than the S2, and since its launched with ICS I'm assuming it will get updates beyond JB.. is it a good option? overclocked processors won't heat up much right?
I can say now in newest google android version we cannot to do customs roms because its some custiminazion center... sorry if my bad english
Send form Galaxy S2. Using XDA Premium
Can't say I know much about the One-S but what I do know is that the dev support for it is pretty weak. More so if you compare it to the S2's. I'm assuming its mainly coz of HTCs locked boot loader which they're still trying to work around. Might improve in the future, but you never know.
Another thing is with this whole system of using different chipsets in some countries. It leads to a lot of chaos and confusion if you're into flashing custom ROMs and the like. For proof, just look up the number of people who have managed to flash an i9100 rom on their i9100G phone and bricked it. (If you do go the S2 way, be wary of shops trying to pass off an i9100G in an i9100 box.happened to me.)
Finally..I don't know how it is in Kolkata but here there are barely any HTC service centres.so any problem with the phone means you're stuck for ages. Samsungs service centres are a dime a dozen here. Didn't like the way the fellows were behaving in one service centre so next time I had an issue went to another one literally 500mts away.
Will it get support beyond JB? Who knows? These companies are incredibly cagey about releasing info on releases and since it won't be their latest model nor a past flagship (that I guess is the One-X) I wouldn't count on an upgrade..leave alone a quick one.

Now this is turning into an essay so forgive me. But regarding the overclocked processor. Extreme overclocking does equal more heat. But if the company is releasing it that way itself it should be alright.
I know the S4 chip does..not so sure about the S3 chip. Atleast one of them uses the 28nm manufacturing process. AFAIK the i9100 chips' is 45nm. A smaller manufacturing process theoretically atleast, should produce lesser heat even if overclocked.

Hi, if you want long term support for new android go for google nexus, if possible. The first nexus (very old phone) got JB while we are still waiting for SII official JB, and i'm starting to worry if it will ever arrive.
Cheers!

Nexus gets all the latest updates because it is mainly a Google designed product made by Samsung and Google doesn't have other phones to update as far as I am concerned, I so it's easier for them to only update one device than it is for Samsung who have hundreds of devices to work on updating.
It's not because the S2 is inferior to Nexus cause it has probably even better specs and a much better camera, 8MP, while Nexus only has a 5MP camera.
If you are okay with using custom made Roms than you should definitely choose the Samsung Galaxy S2. There are some truly amazing custom ROM's out there in which you'll be able to run Jelly Bean very good and overclock/underclock your phone to up to 1600MhZ and still have not so much overheating problems.
As for HTC one S, and I don't really know much about it. A friend of mine has a HTC one X and he likes it veryI much. Ive had that phone in hand and it was good amazing screen but too expensive. I would suggest you to get the S2 until a much better phone comes out and you make the money to buy it. Cheers.

Argh! Nexus One (the first nexus) has been abandoned by Google. It did not get official JB update.

One last question, This will be my first android phone, So lets say I won't be flashing new roms' on the ONE S with the s3 chip, will simple rooting be also a problem?
IMO just getting root access on any phone should be pretty simple, the best place to get that answer would be the One S forum dude.. people who have and use the phone will be best placed to tell you how easy or difficult it is. Unless someone here has that phone as well or has rooted it for someone else, you wouldn't get a firsthand opinion (for want of a better term)
