Hello.
I've flashed the latest Siyah kernel (4.1.5) on my stock GingerBread 2.3.4, using Mobile Odin, not knowing that this version of the kernel is not compatible with Gingerbread, and ended up bricking my phone.
Now when i turn the phone on, I get the usual "Samsung Galaxy S II - GT-I9100" initial screen, then the eye logo of Siyah kernel, but after that the screen goes black and android does not boot.
I've tried Vol Down + Home + Power button combination a few times, even after removing the battery, but it looks like there's no way to even get into recovery mode, because the screen remains black. :crying:
Will I have to buy another phone, or is there any chance to save it?
Pleeeeease help me, I'm desperate!!
SOLVED
I finally maneged, I don't know how, to get into recovery mode, and I could flash back the stock firmware using Odin. PHEW!!!
My apologies for having opened this thread.
Recovery is both volume and power not home and power

In fact!
The post I read which was saying that it was that 3 keys combo must have been wrong...
btw... I'm so happy I could recover the mistake! I have also successfully re-routed my device with the old good doomlord exploit.
What I wanted to do was to install the latest stock ICS and have it rooted without triangle and counter issues, keeping a nandroid backup of my current rooted GB 2.3.4 in case I won't digest the well known ICS appetite for battery. I have rooted my phone using doomlord exploit, therefore currently I have no triangle and my counter is 0. Also, I've read that a full wipe of the phone is highly recommended before upgrading to ICS.
So my plan was:
To make a backup of all the apps, contacts, SMS'es, etc, using a few free apps available on the market, since I've read somewhere that, I don't know why, Titanium Backup can't be used in this case.
To install Siyah kernel in order to get CWM, with which I would have made a nandroid backup of the phone (but here I made the mistake of flashing the wrong kernel version).
To Download latest stock ICS ROM, and flash it using Mobile Odin, which would allow me to make a full wipe and inject the root permissions into ICS without triangle/conter issues.
To reinstall all the apps and reconfigure the phone using the backup made at point 1.
Do you think that the procedure should work, provided that I use Siyah kernel 2.6.14 (which is the latest compatible with GingerBread) at point 2?
Or perhaps it would be better to simply use Odin for PC, root ICS using CF-root, flash back ICS stock kernel (which would remove the triangle but leave the root permissions set), and then use triangle away to reset the counter? (but is triangle away actually capable of resetting counter, or all it does is removing the triangle?)
Since you are in Venice, I assume that you have the GT-I9100 or similar model. If so, you are in the wrong forum. This forum is for the AT&T SGH-I777 model, (US carrier) version. You should go to the I9100 forum to ask your question. And when you do, please post in Q&A, not the general forum. I asked a moderator to move this for you.

Flashing a stock ROM will not cause Yellow Triangle or increase your binary counter.
So you can follow below steps after you get all required backups using apps:
- Flash 4.0.3 stock ROM using PC Odin.
- Root using the method mentioned in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 if you are concerned with Yellow Triangle and binary counter.
- Flash latest Siyah. Use Mobile Odin if you are concerned with Yellow Triangle.
- Flash any custom ICS or JB ROM.
Just follow first two points if you only need stock ICS with root. Factory reset is not mandatory but recommended so there are no issues later.

Thank you acekay. Now it's late but I will check the thread you linked. It looks promising!
Btw I think I must pay attention not to flash custom kernels or use CWM if I upgrade to stock 4.0.4, since I have the buggy eMMC and so would risk to brick the phone, wouldn't I? In such case I would try upgrading to 4.0.3, just to be safe.

Yep. 4.0.4 and CWM recovery is risky. 4.0.3 should be fine.
All the best.

If you flash custom kernel after upgrading to ICS 4.0.4, you are 100% safe!
the emmc bug itself is on the stock 4.0.4 kernel not the firmware as a whole

Ok. So the only thing to take care of is not to have both the stock kernel of 4.0.4 and CWM installed at the same time. All the rest is safe. Thank you for having made that clear.

My Goal: set everything back to stock for warranty. (charging system is *%$#ed)
my problem: I am stuck at the unrooting part.
I have read everything I can over and over and yet I still find myself in a predicament. I have restored everything back to stock (I rooted and unlocked my SGS2, but I never used a custom ROM).
I have relocked the device, I have reset everything back to stock. I used the jig to reset the flash counter. I re flashed my secure kernel. Everything checks out, except my Superuser access.
Now here is the part where I am stuck. So essentially from what I read I have 3 options that I can recall:
1 - just re flash my stock ROM to remove root (seems pointless as I have never had to flash a ROM, seeing as I am still on my stock ROM)
2 - unroot using SOC (which failed to work, stuck on step 6)
3 - use Samsung Kies to update. (this also failed, won't detect my phone, and yes it is in Kies mode, no debug)
I am at a loss. I am on the Bell network in Canada, and I am on UGKG2 firmware.
Please let me know if you need more information. Also, I apologize if the answer is in one of the threads. I have been reading everything whenever I can, and just can't figure this one out. thanks for your patience in advance

Well, there is a market app (rootcheck) but it's easy to check yourself, if you dont have superuser in your app drawer you are not rooted.
Let's say, you dont have superuser app and you cannot access cwm recovery = you are not rooted
If I may ask, why exactly is it that you cannot unroot without flashing an original firmware? Why does SOC even give you the option if it doesn't work? Thanks for the timely replies though

soc does work but a lot of people screw up 3 Simple steps and end up with a semi bricked phone.
Flash a stock firmware is probably the more "safe" system. Also allows you to flash latest version that some countries will never receive or receive very late.
Sry my English sux even more today lol

Ok... So let's troubleshoot why I can't get the unroot to work for SOC... I have tried both in and out of download mode. Debugging on and debugging off. Yet the unroot stops at step 6 and does nothing...

I just flashed the stock rom back. Seems to look quite 100% like it did when it came in the box. Jigged to kill flash counter. I think I am set to send it in Thanks a lot guys.
Following that, looks like for root you just need to download superuser app from market and you are good to go....
Its not so easy as you know.
Removing the superuser apk just removes the superuse app, but then you end up with a semi rooted phone with cwm recovery (that you dont want if you want to go back to stock)

Good im glad you managed to "restock" the phone as you see it is fast and easy with flash of a stock rom
Hello, have been lurking on this forum for a while but never actually made any posts until now.
Let me start off my saying that I am a beginner when it comes to installing custom ROMs, I have only done it a few times before. I flashed my kernel, installed CWM and a custom ROM. After a while I got tired of the rom and decided to go back to Gingerbread 2.3.5. I hated the yellow triangle that shows up when using a custom kernel, so I went ahead and changed that back to stock as well, and that removed CWM as well.
But I've just discovered a ROM called "Batista70 Foxhound Edition 3.0" (which you can find in the i9100 general android dev section) and I love the look and feel it has, and would like to install it on my phone.
My question is pretty basic and simple:
Can I install this ROM without actually flashing the kernel (to avoid the f*ing annoying yellow triangle)? Or perhaps there is a way of flashing a kernel without getting the triangle? Though I'm not getting my hopes up for that question.
I also have a related question:
Can I install CWM without flashing the kernel?
Anything I forgot to add, let me know.
Regards,
Dimergon

If you by a jig off eBay for a few bucks all your problems will go away. It gets rid of the triangle and resets the flash counter. Well worth the $3.
CWM is within the kernel so to use it a custom kernel is required. CWM is worth having for backups and simple flashing.
My suggestion. Install one of chainfires cfrooted stock kernels. Use the jig to get rid of triangle. Then backup via CWM incase you want to go back at some stage.
Then flash foxhound.
Hope this helps.

What you could try is rooting it with zergush exploit. Then download mobile odin from the market, flash cf-root true mobile odin and then you have the recovery needed to flash. And no yellow triangle.
Don't know if it's possible, because I never tried it. But we are on a developers forum after all.
You could of course just flash the CF-root and then remove the yellow triangle with instructions from the CF-root thread. Or buy a jig.
Buy a USB-Jig from Ebay its a good investment and helps you on the triangle.. then download the old Bootloader and save it to your pc and then you are safe
All you need to remove the triangle is a zImage from a secure kernel it's all on the cf thread.

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely have a look at the USB jig, seems like the way to go.
And, to the reply above, is it possible flashing a secure kernel after installing a custom ROM? Seems to me this will not be without complications.
Regards, Dimergon.

Hi all
Just got my new phone and WOW! Had a Desire which was rooted via Revolution, phone was s-off with 4ext recovery,CWM, TB, Bootmanager and other apps which only installed if rooted/s-off.
I have looked at a load of threads and seem to have got bogged down with with what rooting process to use; CF- Root, DooMLord etc
Thinking of rooting new SG2 through DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit v4.0. mainly because it has an unroot process but have a few questions peeps.
1. Is the rooting way I am thinking best way for root?
2. It says in the title easy..is it?
3. What do i back up after root? or is it just a nandroid with 4ext/CWM?
4. Can above mentioned apps be installed after root?
5. Can any Roms and/or Kernells be installed from the SG2 posts or are there certain ones for whichever way you rooted? Any recommendations?
6. If it all goes pear shaped is the unroot process safe for back to stock?
Thanks and have a good evening

1. You can use ZergRush if you're on 2.3.5
2. It's simple
3. You should do a nandroid backup and backup your /EFS folder
4. CWM can be used if you install a custom kernel (it has a modified CWM for galaxy), everything else yes
5. You can install any kernel as long as it's not for ICS. It will bestated so in the post
6. Unrooting via zergrush is just doing a full wipe and all traces are gone. If you use a custom kernel then your counter goes up and you'll need to flash a stock kernel and erase th counter via USB jig if you want to retunr the phone or bring it to a service center (else you void the warranty)
Thanks for prompt reply bpvik.

Sorry about the stupid appearance of this question.
I flashed to unnamed last October and I bought a JIG to remove my yellow triangle and reset the counter. It worked.
I read that the new ICS roms disable the JIG ability and the counter gets updated.
I'm planning to flash to either CM9, Phone Bricker, or ShoStockv2. When I flash to those roms, how can I do so without updating my flash counter?
I tried reading the guide, but I'm confused as to what exactly I should make sure I do. The guide looks like a normal flash.
As long as you flash from CWM it won't trigger the count or triangle. Flash just like a GB ROM, no special prep. Only the odin-one-click of the leak has a bootloader (that is what causes the jig to stop working). The zipped ROMs won't have a bootloader.

As long as you don't flash boot loaders you'll be triangle less. Check out the mobile Odin thread also.
Also, TriangleAway (free on XDA, paid on Market) will nuke the triangle if you're on ICS.
Doesn't work when running GB.

I bought a jig to prevent the triangle after it popped up. I flashed a ton of times with CWM it has never revered its head. You're fine and I'm on ICS now. Like others said just say no to new bootloader

As long as you don't flash any of the newer 1click which flashes the boot loaders like uckk6 and newer you should not have any issues. I went from unnamed 2.2.1 to fakerom than to shostock rc2 than up to rc3, rc4, rc5 and v1.0 with out any issues! Plus shostock does not flash any bootloaders in fact I am still running uckh7 2.3 bootloaders.

I think they were restored after u set up your google acount. If u had them backed on your acount automatcly install them after a google acount is inserted
Enter stock recovery and wipe data. Just make sure its safe for your rom to do so.

I think they're meant to fool stock recovery into flashing a ROM (Because it thinks it's an update, you just have to rename it).
Check TiBu, you got an option to back your stuff into an "update.zip"
MO also allows you to flash one of those.
