Reading Stock Messaging Backup Files - HTC Rezound

I had a Rezound and used the Backup function in the stock Messaging app to back up my MMS messages. However, I moved to an S3 and the stock Messaging app doesn't have that functionality. Does anyone know how I can open and read the messages from the Rezound's backup files either on the S3 or on a PC in Windows? Thanks.
--edit--
I meant SMS messages. I'm not concerned about the MMS messages.

Well, that's part of the problem. There is no file extension. I Googled the issue and found a post on Yahoo Answers that someone indicated it was an SQLite file, but I was unable to view the content in Notepad++ or any of several SQLite viewers. It all just looks like machine language - lines and lines of wierd random characters.

By the way, I meant SMS messages, not MMS. I've updated the OP.

looks like it can't be decoded so easily. If you still have the phone try an app from the market.

If I still had the phone, I'd just restore the backup using the SMS app, then export to XML. Unfortunately, I no longer have the Rezound.

Could you get someone else to restore them on their rezound and then use an app to back them up through a gmail account, then you can restore them from the gmail account you created just for that to the new phone.
There's an app that does that, it's name is simple like sms backup to gmail or something.

Well I thought of that, and I checked Craigslist and everything, but I don't know anyone who has a Rezound who's fine with losing the text messages they already have if something goes wrong. (Restoring the messages wipes out the existing messages.) I know I could back theirs up the same way, swap SD cards, restore mine, export to XML, swap cards back and restore theirs, but if something happens that the process fails in restoring theirs, they'd be a bit upset.

Ignore.

Hi Guys, I have few messages in my inbox that are blank and shows its from 31-Dec-1969. It shows up in both Chomp and android message inbox. I cant delete them in either programs. I have no cache to clear in either and I tried clearing data. Anyone have this or know of a fix? Thanks!

Back in 1969, they weren't sending too many SMS's around, so SMS functionality was pretty unrefined, and didn't have the delete option.
Ok, sorry. that wasn't very helpful.

Equally as helpful...
I tore all my 1969 messages up and burned them.
You tried wiping data using Titanium Backup?
Assuming you have a rooted X10?
yup, tried that.. I have like 7 messages now. All blank and from 31-Dec 1969 and from different people that Ive deleted messages.
Ok so the closest thing I got to your error was when I was using 2.2 with mms settings as Android.
When a png file was being sent I would recieve a blank text with a timestamp.
Saying that though I could do a long press on the thread and delete the thread.
They aint old emails that you deleted from your email server are they?
Saw somewhere that you delete you gmail contacts from your phone then resync from gmail via the gmail web page.
Might be barking up the completely wrong tree though. Sorry!
yeah, Ive read about those phantom emails as well.. non of those fixes work for the messages.
try a repair with SEUS or flash tool and they will be gone i think
I am trying to avoid flashing the firmware... that will be my last option.
I started having this problem just a couple days ago, not sure what started it but I ended up with four threads dated 1969 that I couldn't delete. I read through various forums which suggested a number of fixes but nothing worked.
I did mange to fix it myself though, or at least it's fixed for now. I did this about an hour ago and have rx/tx about 50 SMS since then with no return of the bug.
Download SMS Backup & Restore and back up your messages if you want to keep any of them, this fix will wipe EVERYTHING from the messaging app.
From the Messaging app thread list, press Menu and select Delete Threads. It will ask you to confirm that you want to delete all threads. Say "yes" obviously and bye bye stuck threads from 1969. Of course, bye bye to all the other threads too but that's why you made a backup. From SMS B&R, restore your messages and you should get everything back, minus the 1969 threads.
Your mileage may vary on this one so try it at your own risk. Don't complain to me when you delete that thread with the hottie from the bar the other night. You know, the one with all the pictures she sent you?
i think it maybe happened cuz u took the car from Back to the Future... and while u recieved an sms u were warping back to history. which made this impossible to have and been stuck...
now this how you fix it, go back to the time u warped with the car and stop urselve! else you will mess up much more, u are not allowed to change the past mate.... u mess up the future......
@Coffeedragon, thanks a lot for the tip. It worked. I had originally going to try something like that but I figure the back up would of backed up the blank as well.
oh no...
So I just tried this fix... (Back up messages/settings with Titanium; select all messages and delete) But now ALL my messages are turned into ghosts!!! Also, something many people haven't pointed out yet:
In the stock app, they are ghost messages. In chompSMS, they appear to be changed from SMS to ghost MMS upon deletion.
HTC Inspire 4G
MIUI.us 1.11.18
stock/chompSMS
Got this resolved with some help at the miui.us chat.
1. backed up messages and settings (using MIUI backup, as it was suggested that Titanium is not always great.)
2. Renamed (could delete) mmssms.db
3. rebooted
4. restored messages and settings via miui backup
perfect.

SMS and MMS

Hi guys
does anyone know some kind of program that would export SMS and MMS to excel format?
Do you want the header data or ALL data? In other words do you want the Who, Date/Time, and the contents of the text, or do you just want the Who/date/time info.
who/date/time/sms or mms
Ok so not terribly concerned with the contents of the text just that one was sent/received and if it was sms/mms right....
Let me do some looking/thinking...
I hope you know some useful software .
Not sure if direct linking is allowed so just fix the spaces I entered below or do a market search for any kind of sms/mms backup. I listed a couple I have used or know of.
SMS Backup +
sms backup & restore
I've not looked at this one but try it it looks like it will do exactly what you want..
w w w.androidzoom. com/android_applications/tools/excel-backup_muxu_download.html
I have used this one and did not even know you could read the backup data in excel.. WOW Learned something new!
h t t p s://market.android. com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
I am looking into my gmail account to see if the data backed up to it can be exported/imported to excel format since I have 3+ years worth of texts stored there form the backup programs. If we could run the program and then simply take the data directly from our gmail label that would be nice.
Ye i was thinking about excel backup too but i couldn't find it for free anywhere :/.
So no one know of one program that can save mms and sms threads?
What a **** os. Even Nokia has this omg.

[Q] saving text messages

I'm getting ready to root my phone. However I have some very important text messages that I need to save them. Is there a way to do that?
get yourself a backup app or a SMS app that has backup features
sent from my ICS flavored HTC Vigorous Vigor. If I helped please use the "thanks" option!
The stock app is capable of this.... Just go into the menu in messages and go to backup sms.

Thanks so much! I guess I should have looked just a little harder hahah!
I stopped using the SMS application, OR my actual phone number entirely. I use Google Voice for all phone calls and texts... and this way everything is stored on their servers and I never ever have to worry about losing a voicemail, text message, or call log again.
SMS Backup+ ... I think this may be a perfect app for exactly what you need. It backs up SMS and MMS to your Gmail account under an "SMS" label, and can restored your messages as well. Seamless, works in the background, you'll never notice it, it just works. Oh, and ... it has to be the version with the "+" on the end of the name, if you want to back up MMS.
My Backup Pro ... You can also use My Backup to easily backup and restore your messages. I still prefer SMS Backup+, though, because you never have to do anything manually ever after you install it.

[Q] SMS Backup & Restore

Hey folks.
I recently discovered a great app named "SMS Backup & Restore" which I now happen to be the owner of the PRO version. Things is, that the backup works fine, but upon restoring, messages seem to get restore the wrong order - most of the messages are in the same thread, but completely mixed up. And I don't miss a few, I miss a lot.
The FAQ of the developer says that osme SMS cannot be backed up nor restored since it currently does not support MMS messages. But I'm extremely sure that most messages are just SMS. Did such happen to any of you, too? How to resolve this? And could that be dou to the use of GoSMS Pro which I use as my phone messaging app?
Any help is very much appreciated.

That is the only app I use for sms backup & restore since I have android phone. Never had any problems, except when on restore, threads (not messages) are not sorted in order in which I backed them up. Ofc, I just sort them by "most recent" in messages app. I used Handcent sometimes, but never had problems with dissapearing messages. Backup app and messaging app use xml, which is stored on phone, so I don't think it matters which one messaging app you use.

Thanks for helping, PROleev. Is there a way to clean up the XML-File I have? It contains multiple messages and upon restoring, it does not delete the duplicates although I enabled the option in the program. Furthermore, it seems that it saved messages with the completely wrong time. Therefore, restoring the messages results in a mess I don't know how to resolve.. except for to delete everything.

You're welcome.
Here is the app for duplicate messages, and it should help you (I didn't try it, but users say that it does its job). It is slow if you have a couple of thousands messages. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10377014&postcount=1
I have to make a correction..mesagge applications read from data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db (database file), but they save messages as .xml which you can open in any xml viewer or MS Excel..

Retrieving deleted messages from messaging app...

I have a friend who is able to "bewilder" me and retrieve the wording from WhatsApp messages I sent off my phone. And this is after the messages and the app has been deleted! No, he is not going into my app as it is deleted and yes, he is retrieving the messages and reading them to me. In fact, he can download them and send them to his own hone. So this is like some sort of basement file in my Samsung Droid phone that he secretly knows about. Help! What is he doing and how?

UPDATE: It is as if there is some hidden cache that takes screen shots of the last items that have been opened up. Not only is it messages that have been seen but also an email with an attached photo (that was deleted completely from the phone). Where are these files being retrieved from? There has to be some sort of hidden cache that I do not know about...? Thanks.

Surely someone has an idea of how this is being done? It is the most frustrating thing to have him able to show me how a message from ANY app is retrieved, even if that app is deleted! Again, it was like a screen shot of these messages as they showed me a screen shot of a photo being sent to the other person's email. Is it some sort of cache? Confused still as we are letting a teenager out smart us! Thanks.
