JB vs ICS performace - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I'm currently running Chimera rom and Subzero kernel on my vibrant. It's pretty good, but it does bog down once in a while.
I was wondering what the performance difference would be switching to a JB rom? How much worse would it be (or would it somehow be better?). Which JB rom is the best for daily use?
Thanks

I think jb is better than ics

One thing that lags is the gps and from my experience slim bean is better fast light smooth

hi,
I dunno exact differences between ICS and JB ..but probably JB will have some performance tweaks with related to ICS..[thought : b/c it came later ]
Nyway I suggest ICZen ROM with sub-zero kernal (it already come with it ) as a great ICS ROM out there. Some peeps find the theme bit "UNLIKE" but there are plenty of them u can switch to
tc

Your experience with Jelly Bean can vary a lot depending on the ROM and kernel you choose to flash. Chimera was very laggy and slow for me in even basic tasks (like switching between messaging and a media player), so I jumped right into JB ROMs when I discovered them. While ROMs like Skang (Jellybro Kang build) and Paranoid felt about as slow and laggy as Chimera, Helly Bean and Slim Bean feel much lighter and faster.
I think the kernels mattered a bit more than the ROM itself. After flashing the Devil kernel to any ROM I've tried, I've noticed a definite improvement in speed and smoothness. For the sake of stability, though, I've opted for the Semaphore kernel on my Slim Bean 2.4 setup. This has been my perfect go-to combo lately, and I highly recommend it.

WTF? Gingerbread is so damn smooth

I have been trying out several different ICS ROMs on my phone for the last few months. Never had a GB custom ROM. I was on stock UCKK6 which came with my phone and then went on to the ICS roms.
I have tried almost all of the SGH-i777 custom ROMS - and MIUI as well.
Out of curiosity I decided to go back to Gingerbread so flashed UnOriginal ROM.
First thing I noticed - Damn this is smooth. Everything - browser, launcher, touch response - everything is smooth like a baby's butt.
So whats going on with ICS? why dont we have the same smooth experience on any of the ICS roms. Is it because the official source code has not been released yet? or is it resource heavy compared to GB?
Do not want to start a ROM comparison but just curious. Having moved back to GB I am not sure I am missing anything critical from ICS. Others might not share this opinion but this is what it is for me and the things I use my phone for.
I am still bitten by the flash bug - so will continue to try out the ICS ROMs.
What do all of you think about moving back to GB and the pros/cons? What ICS feature will you miss the most? Please share your thoughts!
<puts flame suit on>
I'm about ready to go that route myself... Becoming frustrated when I find a "perfect" ROM, only to have the wlan_rx wakelock come back and drain my battery into nothingness. My favorite GB is Shishir's - Fairly stock, but with some nice tweakability, and have never run into the same battery probs.

It is a personal choice.
In here, in this world, whole universe, no one forces you to do what you don't want to.
Once in a while, I still heard some people saying "Windows 3.1 is so much better than Windows 7".
It is purely your choice so no need to put the flame on.
It's good that seeing you in fact trying out a few different ROMs and finally made the decision on your own.
That's a good sign for all of us.
I've had the same experience as well. I'm not so sure if it's issues with the roms but more with the Kernels. There is a lot involved to tune the kernels just right. I'm no developer but I believe ICS may just be a little more complex this GB.... or at lease ICS is not so forgiving.... I'm not developer so who knows.
On a side note, I just tried the PARANOIDANDROID v1.1 port so far this has been on the same level as smoothness as any GB rom I've ran. Link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660974
I even found a port for my SGS Captivate and wow.... its 10x better then the GB rom. So this rom has something going on that I'm going to keep testing out. You may want to give it a try as well.
Im still on unnamed and ics has a few system changes like scrolling and touch screen responsiveness that make it how it is

ive been running paranoidandroid since pre 1.0. its been my daily driver for sure. its ridiculously smooth and stable.
In case you haven't tried this combo already, I've found tasks aokp combined with the fluxi kernel to be the smoothest thing I've ever run. And yes, I've run many gb roms. Bought this phone the day it was released. Unnamed is an awesome rom, but I'm in love with this combo

Agreed. I've been running AOKP/Fluxi combo since I decided to jump into the world of ICS ROMs, and it's the best one I've used so far. I will definitely agree about the smoothness of UnNamed, though. I've got a backup saved just in case

I have tried AOKP with Siyah and Neak but not with Fluxi. I will give it a shot.
Of all the ICS ROMs I have tried - I thought Shishir ICS and Serendipity 9 were the smoothest - however that might be partly due to the SGS3 launcher.

Binnacle is also damn smooth. That was my personal favorite GB rom.
Every time I flash an ICS rom, I immediately go running back to GB. Maybe it's just me being impatient and not letting things "settle in", but most ICS roms I've tried aren't as quick and smooth, and that just gives me an anxiety attack

I had not even heard of this one. But saw LilChris's index post and found it. I will definitely try this one. A ROM that PirateGhost and Red5 worked on - has to be great
It shows Beta7 as the latest version. Is this stable enough to be a daily driver?
Binnacle is hands down the best gb rom for this phone. It is wicked fast and epic battery life. Its more than enough for a dd

The only thing that doesn't work on Binnacle is the strippers. Pirate took them out of the last beta build, said they were too "lulzactive" for him.

MikeyMikes Serendipity 9 is the smoothest thing I've run. Especially with the stock Sammy launcher available during Aroma install.

+1. The new Touchwiz UX is really smooth. Trebuchet does not feel as smooth on the same ROM

I did try Binnacle Beta 7 yesterday. I did not realize it had android 2.3.6. I somehow like the bounce effect in 2.3.4 that the UnOriginal ROM offers. Hate the glow effect in 2.3.6. Also, personally I felt UnOriginal was smoother than Binnacle (no offense) - just my opinion.
I did not leave it on long enough to comment about battery life. I flashed a different ROM. Seems like I am turning into a Flashaholic (need to restrain)
My progression:
Unnamed, then MIUI then CM7 then CM9. Doubt I'll ever leave CM9.

[Q] Best ICS ROM?

Enough of these type of thread already have be posted ..........thread closed...........
~~ oka1
I downloaded the original ICS leak which sucked horribly so I'm currently running the Unofficial v1.5. I'd like to go back to an ICS rom but they all look like they have quite a few problems. Has anyone had success with one in particular? My Note is my daily driver so I need one that runs just as solid as GB and doesn't crash any apps.

Team Perfection (June 28th version) worked perfectly with me. It runs smooth (just like my chest ), fast, and stable for me. I am back to GB for now hoping freaking lazy bell updates ICS soon. Comparing to GB and TP's ICS OBJ, the latter is better and a lot less laggy.
It would have been better if you mentioned your carrier and which apps you use mostly or think important.
Install the new leak by Electron. Look in my sig. It is the only one that I have tried which runs 100% bug free for me. But there is no best ICS ROM. What you consider best might not be best for someone else. It all depends if you want tweaks, speed, or no bugs.
I only use roms dev'd by the collective. I did emily then went to stratosphere Which was buggy for me and now I'm on mesosphere remix I believe and its nice to me.

Fastest ROM and kernel combination?

Hello. Can I get some suggestions for the fastest ROM and kernel combination for the fascinate? I have looked all over Google but honestly couldn't find anything relatively new. I want something that can handle a decent overclock, is stable, and is very fast so I can play games with no lag. Any suggestions? I honestly would rather GB over ICS but if getting ICS is what it takes to get maximum speed, then I will go for it. But I would appreciate GB Rom and kernel combinations and ICS ROM and kernel combinations along with some pros and cons of each. That would be great. Thank you!

CM7 and 9 are pretty fast. I'd stay away from JB for now, as it is surprisingly slow. MIUI has good looks and speed but gets literally HALF the battery life CM9 does. The only kernel in town for CM7 is Glitch, witch is a good one. For ICS you have a choice between Devil Kernel and IcyGlitch. Devil has more features and is my preferred kernel, especially since IcyGlitch as the buggy TWRP recovery.
I like aokp m6 with the devil kernel. very fast and stable

Honestly, Helly Bean ROM version 20120807 isn't slow at all. It supports a 1.4GHz overclock and runs 4.1.1. Unlike other ROMs, HB uses /datadata partition to make things quick and smooth. However, no kernel uses /datadata, so the stock kernel has to be used. But i love it.

I have experienced better battery life on MIUI for my HD2 than CM7 or CM9.

Thank you. I think I will try the AOKP ROM. I'm using CM7 as of now with the Glitch kernel but the battery life isn't that great and it's as slow as turtle.

[Q] The most stable ICS ROM?

Just flat out, what is it?
Ice Cream Zenwich.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
Stability is in the eyes of the user.
However, I would suggest ICzen, or RemICS-UX
I have tried all and overall speed wise, stability and the good looks will be Chimera v2.2 from Nelson and team passion
I would suggest ICzen too
This may sound crazy, but Doc's Master ICS ROM v.11 won it for me back when I was on 4.0. You could try the two 12.x releases, but the kernel switch didn't handle too well with my phone, so I went back to Version 11 up until last week when I went to JB. It's quick, snappy, and the black theme looks sweet. Even out of all the ROMs I've used, as far as looks and cool-factor goes, this was my FAVORITE. Besides that, the black theme makes conserves your battery life like crazy. :good:
1. Chimera 2.2
2. Iczen
both are very good ICS roms

I too liked doc masters ics but the EU bug scared me off so I went back to GB until jb came out so now I am on black bean and loving it! I have also tried helly and cm10 but black bean def fav.

JB 4.1.2's stability for use as daily driver

Hi guys,
I am currently on AOKP ICS M6 and really like the stability of it. With JB 4.1.2 out, would you guys reckon that it will be stable enough for use as a daily driver?? My Nexus device runs well with JB 4.1.2 and I kinda like the fluidity and added functions of it. Will hope that I can replicate that in my SGS2.
Which build will be a good place to start if I am most concerned about stability and battery life?? CM10 nightlies? Kinda disappointed that CM has dropped supported for SGS2 and I am wondering if this affects the quality of the nightlies.
CM10 is pretty stable, for sure you can use it as daily driver.

played around with various JBs. I find that they are quite stable apart from the occasional FCs.
However, this one bug really irritates me and will be the deal breaker for JB: >>> Half Volume Bug!!!
Can I confirm that this bug is common across all versions of JB, be it AOKP/CM??

Maybe its just me, but I'm on Paranoid Android 2.5 and theres no volume issues whatsoever. First time I took a call after flashing this rom almost popped me eardrums out. Worth a try if that's what is stopping you from going JB 4.1.2 . No FCs so far either.
I often run piers unofficial aokp and sometimes official builds and I haven't experienced that bug. Not even once.
Oh and I'm obiesly talking about jb.
