[Q] format nook tablet? Windows message! - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Nook Tablet won't read internal. When plugging in usb message screen from microsoft windows pops up and says You need to format the disk in drive I: before you can use it. Do you want to format it? First thought it was the external card but popped it out. Not the case. I'm on 1.4.0 and running cm7b. I have never updated from 1.4.0. Are there any benefits to updating to 1.4.3? Everything works fine just won't read internal. Before installing I used meghd00t Repartition, Reformat, Restore and Rescue SDcard to go back to stock. (Still rooted apparently). So installed cwm recovery, cm7b and gapps. No problem reading external card just keep getting that jacked up windows message wanting me to format my nook. Thanks for any help or fixes.

If I was you, I wouldn't listen to anything that Windows has to say. Especially about formatting, that would just erase all your data.
What happens when you choose not to format the disk? Nothing at all?

Hey Solar.Plexus,
Everything on the tablet works just fine so far. I've been away from it for 3 or 4 months. Seems like this happened to me before when I bricked it. It seems as though something is kicked out of it somewhere. For instance when going back to stock and going thru the whole sign in it won't let me register with b&n. Don't care about b&n so that's not a problem. Just thought that was why I was never able to get updates and still stuck at 1.40. I just bypass it with the volume up and tapping the screen. Would like to be able to run CM9 on eMMC and CM7 from microSD. But if it doesn't show up not sure what to do. Appears as blank drive letters. Oh well! I remember you now solar. Seems that I posted something months back about the benefits to update and old_fart mentioned something about there is a little box called search. It was a good fun banter. Apparently you got a kick out of it if I remember right. So help me out here please. Are you on 1.4.3?
Appreciate your input my friend.

I actually haven't used stock ROM for a really long time. I currently have CM9 on eMMC and different SD cards with ROMs to use. Let me know what exact dual boot setup you'd like to use and we'll see if we can get it to work out for you.
Who knows, flashing the new ROM might fix the unreadable problem. Regardless, you could probably still use ADB to transfer files to and from your /mnt/media partition.

Sounds like a solid dog deal to me!
Let's try your setup for kicks and see if I can follow along. Not real familiar with Cyanoboot but I know how to push buttons. ADB knowledge a bit limited but somehow manage to figure it out eventually. I'll try not to have too many senior moments with you. I'm ready to crack this puppy open.
Dragging right now so catch up with you later.
Thanks major dude!

Since you already have CWM recovery flashed internally, all you have to do is flash the CM9 ROM and gApps from this post right here to set up your eMMC ROM.
Then to make your CM7 SD ROM, follow the directions under the SD VERSION IMAGE section of this post right here.
After that, you can modify the SD card to use CyanoBoot, the 2nd bootloader. So do this:
1.) Download the CyanoBoot file from this post right here.
2.) Navigate to the first partition (boot partition) of the CM7 SD card you have made.
3.) Replace the old flashing_boot.img with the new flashing_boot.img file you just downloaded.
4.) Done.
Now, anytime you boot up from a completely off state, your NT should* boot from the SD card and go to CyanoBoot, where you can choose which ROM you want to boot into.
*You might need to plug your NT into a wall charger in order to get it to boot from the SD card. Only some NTs require this.

Rooted tablet to give to newb

I'm going to root a B&N tablet for a friend of mine and I need to know the best way to set him up here. I think rooting it should be fine, building the SD card doesn't seem too rough, but when I give it back to him he really only wants access to Google Play and all the internal storage so he can drop some video files and a few games for his kid on it. Help me out here and let me know if I should drop a new rom or would it be better to just put the Play Store on it?
Edit:
Obviously I'm having a moment here. I can only get this nook to ask me if I want to format it or not when I reboot. Any ideas?

Personally I'd put cm7 + gapps on it and let him use it like a normal android tablet. I'd also repartition it or have B&N do it so that he has more access to the internal storage.

I agree completely with Cubanluke88. One reason I don't run stock is the white on white problems when running rooted stock. That one problem is enough to make me very use cm7.
One of the reasons a lot of people stayed with stock, if memory serves, was for the B&N magazines.
Play Store has magazines now
There are few reasons left to stay with the stock OS.
Grrrr. I've tried flashing images from both NT_Sdcard.zip and CWM_SD_Flash.zip to a 2gb microsd card followed by placing the CWM.zip over to the sd card and each time I try to boot the nook into the SD card all I can get is asked if I want to reformat. Help me here.
@OP,
If I was you and I knew I wouldn't always be there to troubleshoot if something with to go wrong with your friend's NT, I would just run the CM7 ROM directly from an SD card. That way, your friend would always have the stock ROM to use if something fails on the custom ROM.

Are you actually burning the .img files to it? And have you tried booting with the cable plugged in as well?
Yes on the .img file, no on the cable.
Try the cable. Some models need it to boot from sd.
No one knows exactly why unfortunately (mine never had this problem).
Let me make sure I'm doing this correctly before I go home and waste any more time.
I'm stuck using Windows Vista right now until I can get my Ubuntu box running so if I'm reading correctly what I need to do is d/l CWM_SD_flash_and_exe.zip and use Win32DiskImager.exe to flash cwm_sd_flashing_boot.img to my 2gb microSD card.
Then d/l NT-CWM-SD.zip and make sure the files in that .zip file are in the root folder of the SDcard then boot my NT by holding the power and n(home) button until the nook turns on and off. Plug in the SDcard and boot the NT and I should be loaded into CWM. Flash update.zip from the SDcard and I have root.
God as my witness if I had time to prep a live CD I would but I'm working two jobs and have a lot going on between jobs so I don't have time to get my linux box going right now. It would be so much easier if I had quick access to gparted.
This is the only thread you should be using.
Extract, burn image, boot into cwm (might need to be plugged in), install zip from sd, choose the zip that is in there and boom, rooted.

PLEASE HELP With CM9 Boot from SD Card

Ok, I've been at this 3 whole days now and I DO NOT KNOW what I am not doing right.
I have been following the directions that another member on here has been posting on his blog here.
I have been using the updated files from his blog post here and from this thread here.
Anyway. NO MATTER WHAT I DO, I can not get Cyanoboot to load up. I am using the proper tools to format the SD cards, I am creating the partitions correctly. I am making the SD partition bootable or active. I've done it all and to NO AVAIL. I Can't get it working.
Can anyone who has had success (and apparently there are some) doing this PLEASE give me a few steps. I am not Android Retarded, I understand a lot of this stuff, but I am LOST when it comes to this Nook Tablet and getting this to work. It didn't take me this much time to write my rom for my Razr. It's driving me insane.
I don't want to load CWM onto EMMC or flash a rom onto EMMC because this is my girls Nook and she doesn't want it messed with like that, she just want CM9 to boot from SD and to have the regular Nook software on the internal memory for normal bootups.. I know, I know but that's what I have to work with.
Hey, there's no need for profanity. He just wanted to point out something.
I made a boot able CM9 only card not too long ago, just with the instructions from @succulent's blog. It only took me a few minutes without trouble.
Any idea for where you are getting messed up?

I wish I knew. I've been following the directions to a T. Once, only once it booted to the cyanoboot screen and then went to the two android screen and hung. I rebooted the tablet and it booted right into nook software straight away. It's like I have some freak tab that won't take. I've tried 3 different sd cards too.

Well this certainly sounds like the exact problems users have with faulty SD cards. What brands and classes are you using?
And I think XDA has a pretty good reputation...
I've moved and cleaned this thread leaving only the relevant posts. Please do not use profanity against other members however wrong you feel they are. If you feel something is wrong, do not react just use the report button as that's what it's there for.

Stupid question - have you tried booting with the charging cable plugged in? (Or simply plug in the charging cable when Nook is off.) My nook will only reliably boot anything off SD when plugged in.
Apologies if I missed something obvious.
Just a thought...
Are you sure when you extracted from the ROM zip that the entire file was extracted? I had a problem when I made my CM7 card cause I ran out of memory on my hard drive and only part of the file was unzipped. It took me a while to realize this was the problem and I had the same hang symptoms you describe. Of course I have a really old computer with little hard drive and this is probably unlikely for most, but there you have it. Also something obvious and probably not relevent but r u sure you unzipped the ROM zip files before transferring the ROM files to sd card? I noticed in Succulents instructions that he says "copy" ROM to SD without giving specific instruction to unzip then use tool to transfer to SD card, not drag and drop copy....check your ROM file size, should be over or around 4GB, this might determine if you have full ROM file.
Ok, so noobie mistakes but I made them so just in case!
Also, you have to replace a file in the downloaded ROMS to make the ROMS SD compatible.....could your mistake be in that step?
Just some thoughts...hope you get there soon!

[Q] Nook Tablet 1.4.0 stuck on boot loop

hi new to the forums so please be nice. i have a nook tablet 1.4.0 which was rooted before with the first cm7 release im guessing. well yeah i recently gone back to college and wanted to update my nook so i wanted to delete everything to restore it to stock, idk what program i used or what i did but it didnt work. i think by that time i was stuck on a boot loop where the n logo just goes on and off after that i saw a thread about a total wipe by using ubuntu i tried that and it worked perfectly i was back in stock. my stupidy lead me to want cm7 back since the apps in nook tablet stock wont let me read the books i have online. as soon as i tried to get cm7 i was stuck in a boot loop again i wanted to see if the ubuntu thing was gonna be the solution for my stupidity but this time it didnt work. it was stuck in "writing all zeros". i tried another boot loop solution by ray waldo it didnt work. i can still run cwm but it has some errors in the background saying "can't mount recovery/command/log/log/last_log/last_log. i want my tablet back just to get it to stock is the best solution i would want and i would just keep it that way. ty for your time.

First thing I'd try would be to make a bootable CM7 SD ROM. If you can boot into that SD ROM, you'll at least have an operating system for the time being, and you can still try to figure out/fix the problem that was created in the internal system.

You can still put files on your SD card. The let me try to explain:
The CM7 image that you wrote to your SD card created 4 partitions. By using a free software called MiniTool Partition Wizard on a PC, you can extend the 4th partition (the one for user data) of your SD card to consume the rest of your storage space. The software is really easy to use, you shouldn't have any trouble with it.
Again, I know this all isn't fixing your main issue yet, but at least you'll have a tablet again until it hopefully gets fixed up.

tysm for helping me solar. imma do it fresh from the start right now i have a clean 32 gb micro sd card. i downloaded the cm7 for the sd. i have minitool partition wizard installed. whats my next move. im sorry for the trouble im giving you.
No trouble for me, my friend. We're all here to help.
Okay, so I assume you're running Windows here:
1.) Write the CM7 SD .img to your microSD card using the Win32DiskImager tool found in the opening post of the CM7 ROM thread.
2.) After that's finished, open up the Partition Wizard software and find your SD card disk (make sure it's the right one!)
3.) Choose the option to resize the 4th partition of your SD card. Resize it so that all off the unallocated space becomes part of that last partition.
4.) After you're satisfied with that, click the option to apply those changes and wait for it to perform those actions.
5.) You should now be good to put the SD card into your NT and boot up into your new CM7 ROM!

Okay, you're good there. Go to Disk 2, and the 4th partition down. Click on it then click the Move/Resize button on the toolbar of the program. Then just drag the bar all the way across and you will see that you're changing the storage of the 4th partition.
Report back if you get stuck.

Nook Tablet with Cyanoboot will not boot.

Hello, I recently received a Nook Tablet with a major problem. It won't boot up. The best I can do is to get it to the TWRP menu. If I try to go past that it just goes to a black screen and I have to restart the device. I've tried looking online for a fix but came up empty. I would either like to restore the Nook to factory settings or restore the CyanogenMod OS. The TWRP screen says v2.1.4. When I go into the install menu I have two options cm-7-TEAM-B-BETA1-signed.zip and Gaps_and_root.zip. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, -Rob
More info please!
Is this new or a used device that you are trying to do something with? If so, what?
The CM7 leads me to believe it's a used one since CM10 is the ROM of choice at the moment for most.
What have you actually done, if anything, beside trying to boot?
I would suggest you browse through some topics here, because I'm pretty sure spending a little time will provide with several suggestions how to move forward.

It is used and has an 8gb flash card. When I originally got it I was able to get it to boot but I couldn't download any Apps because the Google Play wouldn't work and it gave a message "OTA Updater has stopped working". I've spent hours looking for a way to get it back to factory or to try and get it to work properly and have had no luck. Now I can't get it to boot up. I tried the Internal eMMC recovery option but it doesn't seem to be working. Could the MOUNT options be a problem? Currently "Unmount Cache", "Unmount Internal Storage", and "Using internal storage" is selected. I just want to get this tablet to work properly so I can download apps and use the Android OS as it was intended.
If I was you I would start over again with a "fresh" Tablet and do a completely new install. But that's me... I've given suggestions how to do that in several similar topics in this very forum. As I said, read the forum! I see several topic headlines that SHOULD catch your attention on this very forum page list!

I tried the acclaim restore per this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402190 . It involved copying the .zip file to my SD and inserting it into the Nook. When I turned it on it was supposed to begin restoring the Nook to the factory OS. When I did it, the Cyanoboot went into "Loading recovery from eMMC". Not sure if it's not booting from the SD or not but I tried the usb to PC method.
I also attempted the AlbertWertz SD Root card, but when I try to write the .img file to my SD it said that there was insufficient space on disk. And I tried it with a 8gb and 16gb SD.
I then tried the do the CM10 install here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2056626 . But my computer doesn't give me the option to format my SD w/ a partition.
I also tried to hold the Power+N 8x and it just goes back into the Cyanoboot menu.
I can't seem to find anyone with my exact problem. NT wont boot into OS, and no matter what I do it goes into the Cyanoboot menu.
Try the burning the "repart.img" in the topic I link to at the end of this post to an sd-card and boot into it. Unless you've managed to destroy some partition on the device in your attempts (and it doesn't sound as you've made enough progress to actually do that - sometimes lack of progress is good) . It's fully automatic and takes you back out of the box stock 1.4.0 (as I have told in several other topics the last few days).
Using this is far sefer than fiddling with CWM and what have you if you're not sure what you're doing!

Assuming you have a Windows PC/laptop, you can download and use this free disk partition tool: http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html (just be careful apply it to the SD drive and not your PC/laptop hard drive).

First thanks for taking time to read my post. How I got in my position, cant tell ya . I should of done more research but to tell you the truth I was in love with my crazy cool Nook Tablet running JB and I got careless. Adams Ubuntu sd card it would load a lit black screen and no more left it overnight, nothing .Megd repart .img I would get the red X as soon as it popped up. I never created did the windows version when I tried parted I never got the error just some messed up version of what used to be a partition I had use of adb when in cwm recovery no serial # just 00 Icant mount anything followed Veronicas threads got Ubuntu on virtual box I would be able to do some steps and then I would not be able to load something like sdcard . I thought I had gotten lucky when I found the recovery .img with the tools already loaded. By The way THANK YOU soooo much for taking the time to make cool @SS stuff and let us play!! well I tried loading scripts to sdcard mounts and what not was not getting any thing out of my sdcard. I did the steps were you erase the partitions then remake everything my partitions looked sweet when I reboot nothing sdcard has the partitions and I ast thing I did was used the step to erase that was a few weeks ago I had given up on it .then as a long shot decided to pm Veronica and ask for some help. started trying stuff again loaded cyanoboot from there loaded twrp for some reason I lost my adb I cant load drivers but I can LOad some .img files from cyanoboot so my partitions and mounts are gone adb not working (but I can fix that )I have a sixteen gb nook tablet 1.4.3 rooted with nook and zergy. Is their a rom that I can load from cyanoboots boot menu that will fix everything. wishful thinking
look what i found
I don't know if this helps but I did a cwm back up brfore getting bricked and then I copied my sdcard to my gf's pc I forgot all about it she pointed it out

If you erased (without first backing up) the 2 partitions /rom and /factory then you have wiped out your NT's factory-installed individual device data (MAC address, security encryption keys, serial no., etc.) without which the NT will not function. The backup made using CWM only covers the 4 partitions /boot, /recovery, /system, and /data, so you won't be able to restore this data using CWM backup. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37515697&postcount=31 for more info.
So trash it.?

If you have an SD card on hand I'd suggest that you first burn a SD image of Succulent's CM10.1 (http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/cm10-1-jellybean-android-4-2-2-for-nook-tablet-0218/) or CM10.2 (http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013...id-4-3-for-nook-tablet-imgsdc-boot-09aug2013/) and see if your NT would boot and run CM off SD card.
If it does boot and run off SD then the device data is probably intact and you can proceed to flash stock or CM internally (or simply just continue to run CM off SD).
If it doesn't I'd suggest you contact @AdamOutler for help with restoring a copy of romdata.zip to your NT's /factory partition.

ok the only thing I have been able to get to work have been recoveries. tried to boot Cm 10.2 sdcard you recommended the sd card did not boot so I used one that loads up CYANOBOOT went into boot menu took that sd card out put in the rom sd go into boot. My nook tablet's screen went black lit internally. Is it loading rom? or am I SOL?
When you boot up the CM10 SDcard it should boot into Cyanoboot which in turn should load SD CM10 ROM (and should indicate that it's "loading SDC ..."), then the screen should black out for up to about 3 min before boot-animation (counter-rotating CM circles) appears.
If Cyanoboot does not appear then the SD card is not bootable (see Notes section of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36685310&postcount=1 for some potential causes). Also you might have to boot the NT from its power off by inserting a powered USB cable.
If Cyanoboot loads SDC ROM but the screen goes dark for over 5 min then the CM10 boot has failed.
Tried and tried no luck
Thank you for your time
