Unresolved sound problem - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I've had this problem for several months now and cannot figure out a resolution.
I'm not sure when it began, but one day my volume for all notifications, ringtones or anything has become EXTREMELY low.
I will get phone calls, emails or messages and not realize it until hours later because I didn't hear anything.
I've tried volume+ and alsamixer with not much success. Volume+ helps slightly if I set it to 15-20 (max), but it's still no where near where it should be.
I've flashed many ICS roms, all of the JB ones and now put my phone back to Samsung's stock ICS. Nothing fixes the sound.
I was thinking maybe the speaker is dying but there's one thing that I noticed that conflicts with that: I've noticed that when I get a call if I let the phone start ringing and while the tone is playing, if I deny the call the volume turns all the way up to what sounds like normal- but only for like a millisecond.
Any suggestions? I'm beyond frustrated and I cannot wait for the Note 2 to come out so I can get my normal volume levels back.
Also, I've searched high and low all over these forums and the interwebs and cannot find anyone else with this stage problem.

Sir, really sounds like a hardware issue, like you mentioned about the speaker. If all the ROMs you have flashed and still having issues with sound, hardware...
will your warranty cover you for a new device or you just going to wait it out til the Note 2 arrives.

I'll probably end up waiting it out, with it only being a month or two away. I've dealt with it this long (I'm gonna guess at least 3 months.. if not longer).
I might try to put in a new external speaker if it doesn't prove too difficult.

Shouldn't be that long ATT is to get the Note 2 by end of Oct, fingers crossed.

The last thing I'm gonna try is putting it in download mode and flashing either GB or ICS tar file. That's mostly just for the purposes of selling it though.

people cannot hear some times when the S3 is close to my face

has any one experienced problems while talking on the phone? it doesn't always happen but the other person on the line stops hearing me until I move the phone a little away from my face and they can start hearing me again. Its very annoying and weird, maybe it has to do something with the senor? I am on stock but rooted, I tried another rom and same issues.
Even though the mic placement is uite traditional for today's mordendo phones, I do find the GS3 is a bit more sensitive than others. Had some people complain about hearing me when on speakerphone and when I had it on my face.

I also had this issue today when I switched hands the party on the other line could not hear what I was saying, it was like I Was muted, it was only when I moved it away from my face and back were they able to hear me.
Same here . Have had the issue before rooting and after.

Could it be the screen protector messing around with the sensors ? Are the ones with the problem all have screen protectors ?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I have been having the same problem. I'll be talking and for some reason the person on the other end will stop hearing me. So far, they have hung up before I could figure out how to fix the problem.
It only happens when I have the phone next to my face and it doesn't happen with every call. It also has NEVER happened when I use my bluetooth headset.
I do not have a screen protector on and my phone is stock. Sprint is the carrier I am using. I did not have this problem on any other phone I have owned.
Anyone have suggestions to keep this from happening?
I hope it doesn't turn out to be a defect

I'd find it hard to believe if anyone doesn't have this issue on their Note 2. All 3 Note 2's in my family have exhibited this problem since day 1 of ownership of each device. I've also read about people reporting it all over various forums.
I'm sure some people will suggest that their device doesn't have any crackling at max volume, but who knows. I'm chalking it up to that's just the way it is and either get a different phone altogether or get used to it

Yeah I feel ya. I am dismissing it as just the way it is because there's no way my family alone has 3 lemons. Not possible. Especially considering all 3 were purchased from separate locations at separate times.
I wish I could get lucky though like the deniers and get a special little snowflake device, sheltered from the harsh defects of assembly line processing.

After ICS update caller can't hear my voice

Hi all, after the ICS update yesterday, when someone calls or I call out, the other person can't hear my voice. I can plug in ear buds, with built-in mic and the other person can hear my voice ok. Wondering if there's a conflict somehow with the speakerphone? Been over the sound settings several times and can't find anything that applies. Any ideas or fixes? Thanks much
Jim
Interesting. I've not run in to that yet. I am unable to use MHS with hidden ssid, I hate that quick look up is gone, and facebook was added. Just a few minor things but overall I like it.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I like what I'm seeing so far with ICS. This problem is very similar to one I had on an HTC Fuze several years ago, but it's been too long ago to recall the solution.

Its a stock Tbolt. I did try flipping the phone and the speaker didn't come on. There was a sound setting that was checked (flip phone for speaker).

If your microphone stopped working immediately after the OTA, I'd call Verizon and have someone look at it and replace it.
If your microphone worked for a little while after the OTA, chances are your microphone just decided to give out.
Either way, I'd look to get it replaced. If its stock and unrooted, there's absolutely no reason for the microphone giving out to be your fault unless it has possible water damage.
Try checking the headphone jack with a bright light for something stuck down in the headphone jack.

RBarnett, thanks for the reply. The phone was working properly (my voice out) worked fine before the OTA update. No water damage. Just too much of a coincidence for the phone microphone to stop working immediately after the OTA, to my way of thinking. Sounds like good advice to have Verizon check it out.
No mic on Thunderbolt after ICS and app installs
Exact same issue here.
I updated my stock, undamaged, 2 year old, Verizon HTC Thunderbolt to Ice Cream Sandwich(ICS) last Tuesday evening. That evening I found out my phone mic was not working. Callers could not hear me, but all else was fine. Speaker phone did work. Love the Bolt and ICS looks and feels great.
I went to the local Verizon store and the guy did some online research and found no known or reported issues. He said that it must be coincidental that the mic stopped working after the ICS update. He cleaned the mic area and the headphone jack, assuming crud may have been disabling the mic. Nothing seemed to fix the problem.
They ordered a replacement under warranty and it arrived the next day. I activated it and proceeded to reload all my apps, again assuming that the mic issue must be coincidental. After many hours tweaking the phone to my needs and setting up all apps I found that the mic did not work.
Thursday I took both to the Verizon store and another rep played with it and could not find the cause. Only options were to upgrade, or try another replacement. I had no reason to replace my previously fully functioning Bolt. They ordered a second refurb that arrived yesterday. Before downloading any apps I was only going to activate it and make sure the mic worked. I never got that far. The second refurb had a malfunctioning screen that was unacceptable to me.
So off to the store I went with three Bolts.
They agreed the 2nd one should never have been sent out with the poor screen.
This time I talked with a female rep. She actually just upgraded from a Thunderbolt and was well versed. We decided to wipe the first refurb back to factory and the mic now was working. I took it home, started downloading my apps and after a few hours and nearly done I found the phone mic to be inoperable again. The speaker mic worked fine.
Assuming an app was disabling my phone mic I wiped it back to factory and reactivated. I checked and the mic is now working again. I assume one of my apps is conflicting with the mic mute. I have been downloading a few apps at a time and the mic is still working. Only about 15% of the previously downloaded apps are now on my Bolt. I just don’t know what app, or when my mic may go mute.
Long, ongoing story, but I thought I would post to see if anyone has any ideas, or similar issues after ICS update. Thanks in advance.
Keep sending them back and complain enough and you might get a newer replacement.

By "new replacement" you mean a new Thunderbolt, or replacement by a different phone? Probably be a frickin Apple knowing my bad luck...lol
I was actually surprised they updated the Bolt considering you can't even get accessories at a Verizon store any longer. And supplies are limited online.

Hey, a big THANKS, for that detailed reply! I guess misery loves company! Yep, that is the problem. The only work around I've found is to use head phones or ear buds. But you can't just plug in buds or phones and expect them to work for phone calls. They have to have a built in mic. Mine is a Dynex Adapter. It has the mic and a button switch for switching to a call if you're listening to music or radio. The adapter is about 5" long and costs about $10 as I recall. At least that makes the phone usable again until a better solution comes along.
Like you, I thought I might have a rogue app and started removing any app with an audio or sound component. So far no luck. Please let me know if you come across a solution and I'll do the same. Thanks again for posting.

I have read elsewhere about a similar issue. In that post it mentioned that once you get the rogue mic mute the only fix is a factory wipe. I have had to wipe phones 5 times since ICS update last Tuesday. I tried uninstalling app by app but never got the mic back without a wipe. I need a phone, more than I need all the apps. I do miss some but am adding them back slowly.
Same here. They are sending me a replacement and we'll see what happens. I'm personally hoping this 2nd one has the same issue and just seeing if I can upgrade mine to another phone. >.>
Being a total dumb ass concerning programming phones, this problem appears to be software rather than hardware related. Could a developer create a small app to simply reset or clear the mic status? I'm probably oversimplifying, but it looks like an HTC or Verizon developer could fix this problem in a matter of minutes. Rendering a fine phone useless after an OS update seems kind of ridiculous, imo. Any suggestions or thoughts?
So far none of the rooted users that didnt take the ota but rather used the flash able haven't reported this issue. It is possible that its a combination of hardware and software where the new software didn't fill the gap for your hardware. It is well known that no two thunderbolts are alike and they all react differently to the software.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Good point Disconnectie. Something, whether hardware or software, rendered my perfectly working Tbolt, basically unusable after the OTA. I wonder now if the Emergency Call function is working? Don't think I'll make an emergency call to test.

Replacement note so much better

Here's an interesting thing. I am on my third note with the other two being replaced due to screen and USB plug issues respectively. I get my new note and it is remarkably better. The GPS works where it couldn't even lock before and the phone itself is sooo smooth. It this how it was supposed to work the whole time?

Sent my Note in a week before my warranty was up to have the screen fixed. Now the screen is much better than it ever was before. The screen was great before but it is noticeably sharper and brighter. My buttons are also super bright now. I think the screen has to be a hardware upgrade that could only be in a new Note or replacement screen.

Yes ....but with a one time, $36.00 upgrade charge.
I've been a customer with them for nearly 15 years, since the early days and I also hold a level one business account.
So results for others will likely not be the same.
I've got 11 contracted devices in service with ATT, for my employees.
Having device replacements coming is much easier under those conditions.
They also let me keep the new device, and the tech told me to sell it for parts or repair the button and sell a new working device.
I've got a new power button coming Monday, and a shop I use regularly that will fix it for me too sell.
All together I'm placing 5 devices and their cases, chargers and packaging up for sale this week as I'm getting ready for the move into the note 2 this Tuesday.
I'm planning to stay around the note 1 section for a while, as we have many new users needing help from those of us who have been around this device for a while.
And I've also got duties to perform with the super thread and our Korean note users needing a section built inside the super thread space.....g

[Q] Top Speaker Noticeably Quieter Than Bottom Speaker

Hey guys...So I've searched the forums and the interwebs trying to find if anyone else has this issue, but the top speaker on my HTC One is significantly quieter than the lower speaker. It also is super quiet when talking on the phone, as in I have to be in a quiet room and the phone forcibly pressed against my ear in the right place for me to hear anyone. This happens across different ROMs leading me to believe it's a hardware issue, but I was just curious if anyone else has encountered this and found a fix?
Have the same experience. No clue if it's normal or not. Doesn't seem to be too huge of a deal when held from a distance.
True, but the phone call quietness is what kills me.
