[Q] Thinking of flashing a ROM, not sure which to use - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

I've got a US Galaxy Player 5.0, and it's my daily driver. I mostly use it as a PDA (got it to replace a really aging Palm...), but love playing games on it, using it as a camera, and browsing the web as well. I saw a Nexus 7 today, and realized I want a performance upgrade for my Player, but I don't know what ROMs are in what state. I know some have certain bugs, others don't, and I want to make an informed decision based on what other people have tried.
I think I want to try something like a stock 4.0/4.1, but I could be open to customized versions as well.
I've looked a bit at EtheralRom 2.4, but being a noob I can't post there to ask questions. I know I've seen some other ROM's in previous visits to the site, and I've always started my search with the All-In-One thread.
Absolute must-haves:
-Working Cameras
-Working GPS
-Working Bluetooth/Wifi
Don't care so much about:
-Audio quality/supported formats
I am also using my Player to debug an Android App I have on Play, so if there's anything I should know about that connection I'd appreciate it.

If you absolutely need the camera then no ICS for you, it is currently work in progress.

If the cameras is a must-have, then the ICS roms isn't for you. Also etheral is a rom for the SGP 4.0 and not the 5.0. As for ADB, (debugging) it is working normally.

Ok, good to know. Are there any ideas on when cameras might get integrated into the ICS builds?
If I give up on ICS, what gingerbread ROM would give the most noticeable performance boost?

Chip 1.5 rom

I don't have any idea of when this could be integrated (it involves quite a long programming port). As for the roms, I don't know as I don't own a 5.0 but people says that chip is one of the best GB roms available for the moment.

Chip Rom ..ADW launcher Ex and its flying try screens and menus faster then GS3..on mine international is perfect but read that on US could have few bugs ..maybe one with US could tell you.

[Q] Whats the possibility of CM7?

Whats the chance of getting CM7 on the SGS2?
Is the SGS a fully supported CM7 phone?
I'm a HTC man myself (DHD atm), but the SGS2 is looking mildly tempting due to the AMOLED screen, loud speaker and great .mkv playback capabilities as I watch quite a bit of video.
I am leaning more towards the Sensation due to the 16:9 qHD screen and the fact I've never been let down by a HTC device yet.
But I've really got used to CM7. Whilst I'm sure the Sensation will get CM7 on it... at some point, I reckon the SGS2 will get it first.

Very doubtfull you will see any custom roms on HTC now mate because there locking bootloaders
The device hasn't even been rooted yet but I'd say it's only a matter of time. If it's a deciding factor for you then hang fire but I'm actually quite liking touchwiz 4 and that's something I never thought I'd say.

Samsung is very good about releasing source, just check http://opensource.samsung.com they will post the source within a few weeks I'm sure.
sorry to ask this noob question, but why do you need cm7 on this phone? is it laggy? lacking features ?

Because this forum is for developers and development of ROMs, otherwise why would you be on this forum
some people want root regardless as they like to tinker.
also enables useful features like
titanium backup / Clock recovery so you can easily backup/clone your phone state
overclock (speed) / undervolt (battery)
CIFs for mounting windows shares or presenting itself as a windows share (very useful esp over wifi, look ma no cables)
get rid of touchwiz and other preinstalled stuff (I haven't used touchwiz 4 but I like stock android and I'm a speed freak)
I never rooted/custom ROMed my nexus one (as I love stock android) but it was the first thing I did to my galaxy tab and will be the first on my list with any non stock android phone

There's a chance it might get cm7 but it'll require a lot of work, the current sgs has cm7 but its still in alpha stage since samsung doesn't release the source for its proprietary drivers, everything has to be made from scratch(ie. time consuming). I don't think anyone whose working on cm7 for the sgs wants to do this again.

all upcoming HTC devices will have locked bootloader, plus i strongly doubt we're going to see CM7 on SGS2 since Samsung doesnt release (or at least not so far) the source code of the drivers.
wait, does this mean no custom ROMs for SGS2 or rather they will just be less drastic modifications?
for example I don't think the galaxy tab custom ROMs use written from scratch drivers.
sorry new to custom roms.
There will be plenty of custom ROMS. Just not AOSP rom anytime soon.
Basically with AOSP you will loose a lot which includes all the multimedia capabilities ( ability to play many containers and codecs natively with hardware acceleration ), hardware GPU acceleration in browser, probably MHL link and HD recording.
There are very few people who will be ready to give up all this to get AOSP rom for this phone.

Man,never been a big fan of CM Roms, have moved to MIUI Froyo Rom{now with Formels MIUI Android 2.3 Rom},,tried CM many times but battery drain & other force close issues were in plenty.MIUI works best with my Nexus 1,,extremely fast, smooth, less battery drain ROM.
As far as Sensation goes,i hope it will be rooted, also it will be by June end when both SGS 2 & Senation will be launched in my region,so will have clear idea as to which one is getting more devs support{as xda support is what is most important for me rather than the phone itself}.
Have such a great time with N1.

Not only Cyanogen, there are various different devs with their custom roms, but CM is used in most of the droids.
Samsung Galaxy S has a pathetic lag issue/faulty gps issue.
Even after so many lagfixes & workaround{in various roms},it still is very fragile.
Therefore you will definitely see people asking about SGS 2 lag issue or any GPS issue{hopefully GPS is great here in SGS 2 by default compare to quite pathetic in SGS}

As I said, I'm a HTC fan, but one thing I am not is a Sense fan! I can only presume that will extend to TW, although I have never tried it. I also like to run my phone at 190dpi instead of the standard 240dpi that most phones run at. And with Sense at least, when you change to anything other than 240dpi, it does not like it one bit!

Suggest a Rom for my Gtab

So I took the plunge and bought my self a Gtab, not too keen on blowing ridiculous amounts of money on tech, so for the specs and price tag the Gtab seemed to be the best bet.
Now I am fairly comfortable flashing Roms, I just would like some input from the community.
So whats the most functional and stable rom available currently?
CM7 has always been my go to first base rom for pretty much any phone I have flashed, but I dont quite like it on my Nook Color, its fairly buggy, but I blame the nook not CM7
but Hardware Acceleration sounds nice, and I know that none of the Comb roms have it, but neither do the GB Roms either right?
Looks like Clemsyns V8 is probably the best 2.2 rom out, but how is it in terms of functionality and compatibility with newer 3d games and other applications?
any other input would be greatly appreciated, I just figured I ask before I go on a flash spree, because it usually takes me a couple weeks of flashing this and flashing that before I settle on a rom and I didnt really want to drag this out that long. I just wanna flash, and use until ICS Stable Rom is released.
FrankenTab and Beastly ROMs are FroYo based and should have hardware acceleration, camera and video support. Plus, they are actively being updated. They aren't Honeycomb, and I still prefer VeganTAB 7.1 (even without hardware acceleration), but the FroYo ROMs will pretty much have everything working until a stable ICS version hits.
Sent from my gTablet using Tapatalk.
I've tried most of them at some point I guess it matters what you are willing to sacrifice. I love the look and feel of Flashback but no hardware acceleration, no camera, more ram used by the system ... (all Honeycomb roms are like that).
CM7 works great and I keep one gtab on it. MX Player has Tegra 2 software acceleration for video and most games and apps work. Has been very stable for 4 months, not buggy at all and looks great.
My other gtablet has landed on Beasty-Clemsyn. It is a Froyo rom, very stable and very fast with full hardware acceleration. I ended up here because everything just works like it is supposed to. Installed the new market, flashplayer, new version of VTL launcher and I really like it. It will hold me over till an ICS rom comes out.
FrankenTab and Beastly
I've been switching between FrankenTab and Beastly myself.
I think FrankenTab looks nicer overall but I've run across less issues with the Beastly rom and so I've settled with that until ICS is released for our G Tab.
Let us know which roms you try and your experience with them.
I am pleased that my FrankenTAB ROM has found its way over to XDA.
I would love to hear any issues users are having since we are actively developing this ROM (currently working on v1.0.2), but I cant help over here yet with an official support thread. If anyone needs help, you can PM me here, or google FrankenTAB and look for the original and most active thread for it on the site that starts with an "S".
Franken Tab is a great rom, I also went through allot of flashing trying different roms, soon the ICS ROM will be around and I am using the pre-alpha so what ever you decide set up for 1.2Bl and the latest CWM touch version. its coming n its cool.
Yup FrankenTab is the first rom I have flashed on this thing, and I am liking it so far.
-great wifi integrity
-fast as hell
-and the included VTL launcher is nice too.
plus having the ability speak with the Dev directly about suggestions and bugs is very nice as well.

Flash works fine in 2.2 and 2.3 based ROMs. I have it working just fine in VeganTab GE 7.1.
From what I understand, it works (with caveats and quirks) in Honeycomb, and only with certain versions of Flash.
Sadly after messing with Franken and Beastly, I found my self at CM7s door.
Franken had me really really excited at first, it was fast, it was responsive, I only had it set at 1.33ghz, but there were a few issues with both that I found a bit to unstable for my taste.
Will see how CM7 holds me over.
I love 1.09 frankentab. It performs better then anything I have tried but is way behind brilliant corners in bench mark tests. I can't figure that out because it's seems 5 times faster in real life.

Hello,
I have had my Gtablet for about a year, and I have tried many roms.
FY,GB,HC,ICS,etc. Various incarnations. (Well, only 1 ICS)
From my understanding, Viewsonic, like many companies,
uses various suppliers for components, so the individual results with roms will vary.
And the physical build may vary. eg/ Volume (+) is actually (-)
(this is a reported build difference that my tablet has)
I seem to come back to Froyo roms for many reasons. Base platform OS.
Hardware acceleration. Stability. Etc.
Personally, I haven't found a newer gen rom that works as well as Froyo.
As stated on this and other sites, Be sure you follow the recomended
procedures for pre and post install. usually posted in the OP.
Really get to know and understand NVflash.
I always come back to the C+C rom final version. Beasty, although nice,
wouldn't do what C+C does for me.
I use my tablet as much, if not more than I use my PC, and I can run Splashtop
to access my pc, which is cool.
I do find certain games or apps that wont work, but, I am patient.
No problems with google apps.
It really comes down to researching, and testing, and finding out
the best rom for you and your tablet.
After all, this support, is almost free. Kudos to the devs.
J.
sorry. this is on another post. hope that is ok.
I've been on FrankenTAB 1.0.9 for two weeks or so and so far one of the best Froyo ROM's I've tried. I flashed quite a few ROM's for the 1.2BL but this one seems to work the best for me at the moment.
I just put the ICS rom on my gtab, and it looks great. Installing it wasn't that hard, I did have to switch bootloaders to 1.2. The only issue is I can't get my external SD card to work. I love using chrome.
In ICS, the external sd card is not named the way it is in other ICS distributions...look for /microsd folder instead of /emmc or /sdcard/external_sd like you may be used to.
If anyone is already on BL 1.2, ICS is definitely worth installing. The only two things that I've found that do not work are the camera and microphone but for me both are non-issues.
Hello ive been using my gtab with tnt rom and it runs really good

[Q] Few questions about ICS

I'm using Korean version of SGS2(SHW-M250S, GINGERBREAD.EL21), and I have few questions about ICS.
First question : I could find leaked ICS roms for GT-I9100, but I couldn't find for mine. Is there any roms for SHW-M250S? Or can I just install GT-i9100 firmware on my SGS2?
Second question : what is advantages of ICS compared to Gingerbread?
Thanks for reading and please let me know if you know something about them.
Sent from my SHW-M250S using XDA App
don't know about first, but as for the second, ICS is a WAY better OS than gingerbread. due to hardware acceleration and much better multicore support its a lot faster, has tons of great new UI improvements (see any galaxy nexus video) including the best multitasking support of any android version yet, and lots of extra goodies like face unlock and cellular data managers.
I can't answer your first question, but as a 2 month long owner of the Galaxy Nexus, I will say that ICS is leagues ahead of Gingerbread. As I'm sure you've heard, ICS is "faster" and "more efficient," but when I think about it the speed is not what really hits home for me. The whole OS and set of default apps are so thoughtfully designed now. I used to try and replace all of the stock apps with market apps like Dolphin Browser and Go SMS, but now the stock apps are (in my opinion) the best out there. I think that the stock launcher, sms app and browser are probably the biggest reasons to switch.
That said, the development world hasn't yet made the jump to ICS, so you aren't missing out on man market apps by not being on ICS. It is my hope that we'll see more of a push for ICS app support.
Thanks for replies! I will try flashing it.
Sent from my SHW-M250S using XDA App
dont even try that you would only have a $500 DLLS Toy it will brick your phone in every way and wait they have different Modems, Kernels etc

JellyBean ported to our Flyer

Well,
i tried to see if the jellybean could somehow run, and currently it seems to run just as the ICS port that chaos did.
im still struggling with the bluetooth on it, but basically it seems to work, i still am not sure its h/w/egl accelerated.
but it runs, but looks pretty much like our ICS build with pretty much the same flaws and problems, except it using framework from 4.1.1.
im testing gps and other part the next days and might upload but cannot promise continued work on it, since our kernel is still the primary reason for missing camera and proper app switching and performance tweaks of kernel 3.x.
btw, it was based based on desireHD+tf201 builds. libs of DHD and framework from tf201 (got AdvancedPowerMenu builtin)
got problems with 160 as density, then its still with mobile view, 120 works, but very small.
Hi any news on development with port on one v ?

well,
it goes forward. wifi, gps, compass, sound, vibrator, accelerometer, light sensor ..works..
camera, bluetooth and a fuzzy touch display when scrolling(as seen in other ics port)
I think the mobile view your seeing is the new 7 inch tablet mode. Basically the ui and launcher all look like a phone, while all the apps run in tablet view. I'm mixed on it myself, would be ok with it if the launcher worked in tablet mode. Good job nonetheless and good luck!

For me scrolling issue is the most annoying. It doesn't let us feel the fluidity of ICS and JB. And, fluidity is the USP of these higher versions. Though I use camera often also, but fluid scrolling is must for me. And, this is our main reason why we want ics on our device.

agree, and that is part of the onexxl rom, but sorry, i do not see it here and display drivers are not compatible.
but important is also that drivers are not native for this device, i might be in better luck porting a OneV rom, when its official.

okay,

[Q] Main diff Samsung JB vs AOSP roms

Hi guys,
can you help me understanding the main pros/cons for going with Samsung JB or an AOSP rom on the Galaxy S3?
I've tried searching the forum but without luck, anyone got a thread link where this is covered?
My first Samsung (S3) phone is on its way by mail, and I'm trying to decide which type of rom to choose.
Off course I see the obvious stuff like:
Open vs Closed source
Stock vs Custom UI
But, except for the above; why should I choose an optimized (de-odexed, de-bloated etc. etc.) Samsung JB rom over an AOSP rom?
From what I can understand custom kernels also exists for both rom types, so that wouldn't be an argument right?
I'm not familiar with the current HW support in AOSP rom's for the S3. Generally this has been where roms for my HTC phones have differed in the past. What's the status with the S3, do AOSP support most of the stuff or is there still some way to go?
Please shed some light for me :fingers-crossed:
And please don't compare specific rom's against each others. I'm trying to understand this at higher level, I will off course test several rom's and make up my own mind about what specific rom release is best suited for me.
Samsung roms will have all the things mentioned in the ads such as direct call, smart stay, multi window etc. Aosp won't have these as they are samsungs additions. Samsung will have touchwiz launcher as default, which comes with a lot of samsung only widgets. Aosp will have vanilla launcher (with some extra functions and tweaks).
Sammy roms generally have better camera than aosp. Aosp is considered to have better battery usage although I can't really tell from my experience of using both types.
Deodexed means it's easier to develop themes for, as the external odex files are repackaged into the apks directly. But it will take a while longer when booting, as odex files are meant to speed up this process. As for the actual usage, not much difference.
Debloated means getting rid of bloatware that come with your phone, sich as chaton, google talk etc. There will be quite a lot of apps that you don't use but will be present and wasting your phone resources. Debloating is done by some developers but you can do most of ot yourself as long as you're rooted.
Hope this clears things. But these are all general, as you wished it to be. Some aosp will have different launcher options etc, so will sammy roms. As for what you go with, I'll leave it up to you.

Thanks a lot xcly, this clears up some stuff for me
You say that Sammy roms have better camera, what about the rest of the HW support on AOSP? The rest of the stuff (GPS, Accel, Gyro etc.) works ok?
From what I can gather from your post (and reading around) the choice boils down to two main points for me
HW support
Kernel (stability and performance, ofwhich battery performance is derived)
I don't care much for the 'Samsung features' (direct call, smart stay, multi window etc.) and the launcher can always be customized.
Additionally my previous experience is that the continious devlopment done on AOSP (with nightlies etc.) gives a nice feeling of continous improvement that you miss from manufacturer roms. For manufacturer roms you're relying on manufacturer relase schedules and leaks. But off course, one can argue that there is continous development through hacking, back-porting and kernel improvements for these roms as well..
Ultimately I think Ill just have to try out the most popular roms of both types before I'm able to decide what type I go with as a daily driver.
As for kernels most of then support both aosp and sammy so don't worry about it too much. Gps wifi and the lot work well on both as well.
Samsung didn't release any source code for its processor so aosp roms can never realise the full potential. Never had any trouble using aosp so I wouldn't say there is a huge difference, but I guess some advanced users will miss the hw side of things..

Here is some personal feeling about them.
As you can see from my signature that I had Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus before, and after I lost my GNex, I tried to buy a Nexus 4, but it kinda like mission impossible as it's serious outta supply, so I was forced to make compromise and go with Galaxy S III, which is very nice phone through some thing I don't like such as hardware button and soft key (because GNex uses virtual button on screen which is completely customizable ).
I have been using AOSP ROM for over a year (well, it's outta options actually as they are Google's sons but Samsung didn't make a ROM for them even they are manufactured by Samsung , and 3 month with Sammy ROM.
Even I got my S3, the first thing I have done is flash AOSP ROM and get my feeling about GNex back, but unfortunately due to some reasons, I couldn't make it become GNex-like and realize it is something fool, so I tried Sammy stock ROM.
My first feeling about it is a little prettier than AOSP ( through there's countless themes for AOSP, I am just talking about default theme ) and some Sammy features are very interesting and attractive. (IMHO, I'd say it is more user-friendly to users ) which is why I decided to stay with it , but after all these times, I didn't actually use these features much except multi windows and slide to dial...
OK, sorry for my non sense words and my bad English just can exactly express what I trying to say...

don't turn this thread into a best rom one
A quick follow up question
Just a quick follow up question regarding HW support:
Whats the status for AOSP roms regarding MHL, does it work?
I recently saw a video where a guy paired his phone with a PS3 controller and played games on his HD TV. Would this possible on non-Sammy roms?
Can't help you much on that. Never tried mhl on my s3, aosp or otherwise. You're better off asking/searching in cm thread. If it works on cm, it'd probably work on other aosp roms too.
