I was originally on a custom rom. But I planned to unroot back to the stock rom, I just used the apps of "Triangle Away" and "Mobile Odin". The stock rom with "md5" format was transferred earlier to the phone. However, after I reset the flash counter and flashed the stock firmware, I kept getting a reboot loop of "android stock recovery" where there were no options for me to choose, e.g. wipe data, wipe cache, etc. I was panic. Hurriedly, I tried to hold the "power + volume up + home" buttons, yet failed. I then tried to press the "power + volume down + home" buttons to go into the downloading mode, and reflashed the stock rom via Odin. After this, the phone was able to start normally and I went to wipe data and wipe cache...All my data was gone. So, basically, do you guys do like what I mentioned to unroot your S3 or any other suggestions?
use triangle away/flash stock with Odin/factory reset.....all set for warranty
However I back everything up first!
Flashing a full ODIN stock ROM should wipe everything except the flash counter, which you reset with Triangle away. So you should be good to go
How to save my previous apps and data during rooted time before I unroot? Titanium backup is the only app I used which disappeared after a factory reset.

you need to set your titanium back up location to external sd, done that once myself....live and learn
If I dont have an external SD meaning that I need to backup to the PC? @@
did your internal sd card get wiped? If not then reinstall titanium and it will find your backups and then proceed to restore as usual
---------- Post added at 12:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:27 PM ----------
.....also, in future if you only have internal sd card then yes, before doing anything that may wipe your sd card, backup the titanium folder to your pc for safety sake, also backup your efs with k tools, and make a nandroid as well.....all standard safety precautions
All's gone, back to the stock storage of 11GB. Really a damn! For stock firmware with no rooting, what app or software is suggested to do a full backup of phone? I don't like Kies, seriously.

READ AT THE END OF THIS POST FOR THE SOLUTION
I accidentally used Titanium Backup's widget to frost all system and user apps, leaving mi phone in a infinite boot animation loop. I dont have aNandroid Backup and I would really love to solve this issue without flashing.
I found at Titanium Backup's troubleshooting webpage that I could use this command with adb to solve my issue:
Code:
Type the following command (replace with /dbdata/system/packages.xml if you have a Samsung phone):
busybox sed -n 's/<package name="\([^"]\+\)".*enabled="false".*/\1/p' /data/system/packages.xml | while read PKG; do pm enable "$PKG"; done
but it just says: No such file or directory (yes, I changed /data to /dbdata as stated in the webpage)
Any idea on how to solve this issue?
Thank you!
**EDIT:
This is the way I managed to get my phone working again without having to flash or wipe:
1. Boot in recovery mode and used adb pull command to extract "packages.xml" and "packages-more-backup.xml" from /data/system/
2. Open both files with Wordpad and replaced all protection="2" or "3" lines to protection="1".
3. Also, and very important, replaced all enabled="false" lines to enabled="true"
4. Boot in recovery again and used adb to delete old "packages.xml" and "packages-more-backup.xml" files and push the new ones.
5. Reboot and Voila!
6. Boot once again in recovery mode and fix permissions to avoid any problem.
Hope that this could be usefull to someone else having this horrible problem.
Thank you all!
Checked for that file on my phone, it doesn't exist in /dbdata/system/, but it does in /data/system/
It's probably fixable from the command line with Linux but that is over my head, one option would be to Odin or heimdel back to stock, and start from scratch. You might need a jig to get into dlmode.

I wonder what would happen if you removed the app (its apk) via adb from /data/app. Would it retain the freeze settings? Something to consider trying.

Pretty sure that's not gonna work because the frozen apps settings are at packages.xml file, but I can't access it I don't know why

I got a little too punchy with titanium on my 3 year old original Galaxy tab 7 and froze a samsung system app. Got irreversibly stuck is soft brickland - Tried various methods before giving up and hitting the wipe and reset to factory restore in the system recovery mode. Everything was backed up except recent photos, so it was more annoying than the end of the world.
Odd thing was when it reset to factory, it appeared to do just that, yet when I plugged it into PC and mounted it - the memory was full and all my files and app data files were there - untouched. The apps themselves have gone except one - Superuser is still there, Does Superuser somehow override being reset? and act as a guardian of your data in the event of reset?
Odd. I was expecting to run some file recovery software to a salvage what i could, but viola - it was all there.

ZIP for unfreezing apps
For those, who accidentally frozen important system app: here quick solution without factory reset, reflashing and ADB
It automatically edits files as described in first post.
You should have unlocked bootloader. If no, ZIP useless because unlocking wipes all data.
Download both ZIP's and just flash them via custom recovery (TWRP / CWM)
If first throws error try second and vice versa. 2nd with mark "New" contains newer updater-binary that must be compatible with recent TWRP.
Then all apps will be unfrozen, so phone will boot.
Fix compatible with all Android versions.
Note: also you can somehow (ADB or filemanager in TWRP) delete file /data/system/0/package-restrictions.xml
More correct to edit that file which ZIP actually do, but deleting not harmful too.

Thanks very much for the zip. It worked great
Same Problem
Does anyone have an updated version of that zip? I also froze an app linked to the device and it won't boot, even after factory resetting it. Tried running the zip on my t-mobile GS4 (probably newer than that zip) from the SD card in recovery mode, however it didn't unfreeze it.
Any help greatly appreciated!

1. To flash that ZIP you need have custom recovery (CWM or TWRP), not stock.
No update needed, it still works in this case.
2. That strange. Maybe you not really performed reset?
Double check all and try again.

Yup, unfortunately I did select wipe data on the recovery screen. I am also stuck in an infinite boot up loop and cannot access the phone to install any apps. How can I use a custom recovery to run the zip file if i cannot access the phone? Instructions much appreciated. Thanks again.

ZIP – it's not app.
Again, you need to install custom recovery.
Here link to TWRP and how install it via Odin on PC.
You need place that ZIP on sdcard.
Enter in recovery (don't know how on your model), select Install > find ZIP > confirm > reboot,

Downloaded TWRP with Odin and ran custom recovery without a change after the zip (this must have been a deeper-rooted problem in the OS itself), however in the meantime I formatted the system partition, removing the operating system. Installed Kies and ran the update. It reinstalled the OS and I'm good now. Most stuff was backed up anyways. Thanks guys for your time :good::good:
Which apk is the culprit?
Man, I wish I'd found this thread before restoring my phones internal ROM. Had it rooted and set up in every way I like except removing bloatware.
Using TB, I froze a system apk that shut down my System UI and sent the phone bootlooping. What I'm trying to determine is WHICH apk(s) I froze that caused this. I thought I had researched each one that didn't seem obvious, but I musta missed one or one of the 'obvious' ones wasn't so obvious.
Ok here it is, treat me gently as I'm no expert. I have currently running ICS 4.03 LPD + CF-Root. I first flashed 2.3.6, then jumped to Lp8 and now LPd and never have wiped my phone. I have a lot of unused apps and was thinking in doing it.
Question: Will I loose Root? or apps like CWM and such? What about the info in my external SD card? Anything else i must take into consideration?
thks in advance

You will not lose root or cwm manager as that is in the system apps. You will lose all the apps you have downloaded though. But if you have Titanium Backup, My Backup pro or Rom Toolbox, you can backup all your apps and reinstall them once you have rebooted.
[EDIT] Also wipe delvik cache when you do a data/factory reset.

Hey,
Everything was working fine until I decided to install an emulator app of Gameboy for android so I ended up installing an app called Gameboid but it didn't work properly so I uninstalled it at installed MyBoy!. It was working properly until my battery went dead and the phone turned off then I plugged the charger and after the phone turned on every app kept crashing avast anti-virus, Gmail, Talk, I can't even open Phone app and in Messaging when I want to send a message or reply or delete a message it crashes, I think I have to do a factory reset but I don't wanna lose my text messages and the only way for me is to use the Backup&Restore app on Android, I can't connect to internet to download any other app and when I connect the phone to PC it won't show the folders, my question is will the backups created by the Backup&Restore app remain after I do a factory reset? And the other question is after I create a backup and then want to restore it the name of backup is the date and time and then it's written (0.1M) if this is the size of backup obviously it's not a successful backup do you have any idea what that 0.1M is? I'm completely confused I've never been so much in trouble with Android I think it's some kind of virus or something, any help from you guys is so much appreciated, the phone is Xperia U with ICS I need to have a backup of those text messages and I need to do a factory reset please give me a way thanks in advance.

As far as I could find sms are stored in: /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
If wiping dalvik and cache wont work you can try copy all files in that directory to sd card.
mount data in recovery.
open adb shell in windows: adb shell
make sure sdcard is mounted: ls /sdcard (see that you get list of files/directories in your sd card)
creake directory for backup: mkdir /sdcard//sms_backup
copy db files to sdcard: cp -R /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases /sdcard/sms_backup/

I'm no expert either.
No memory_tweak is not a must.
Weird it shouldn't need /system mounted, I jave Sola's CWM Touch 5.5.0.4 on my Xperia P and shell wprks without a problem, it uses one from /sbin which is busybox actually.
but you can try mounting /system maybe it'll work then.
Instead mount / data in CWM recovery and then: adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases databases
that will copy the databases to <current directory>\databases on your pc.

The databases must be put back when the application is not sorking and also need to have parmission owner and gtoup set correctly.
I think pushing them back with cwm adb is the best way, but you will need shell too to change permissions and owner.
You can try with file manager that support root.
owner and group of all files is radio:radio permissions for db file 660(owner and group rw) and journal files 600 (owner rw)
And reboot the phone right after.
After being stupidly led to believe I could flash this "V2.4 STOCK THEMED LSD ODEXED", from this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37186930, & having done a nandroid backup, I can no longer use the phone!!
I have no settings/dialler/contacts/messaging now, after restoring backup when flashing the mod resulted in bootloop!
I've tried using Titanium Backup to restore contacts & messaging but it just hangs! I even tried to install the apks from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1969991, but they start to install then say not installed!?
What's happened & how can I fix it without having to flash stock rom all over again & lose everything?
Anyone?

You have to make a full wipe of your phone in Recovery mode. Then you can just restore /data partition from the Nandroid backup to keep all your apps.
I also suggest you fully unroot by re-flashing your stock firmware and re-root if any problem persists after trying the option i've written above.
Good luck!

How do I just restore /data partition from backup in CWM? & if it works, can I then restore the whole backup & not have this problem when done? Thanks!

Didn't you try to restore the whole backup already? If you did and it didn't work then you cant restore your full Nandroid since something has gone corrupt.
What kernel are you on?
To restore /data is usually this way but depends on kernel, which is why i asked you
Go to 'Backup and Restore' and then 'Advanced restore/Custom restore job' and press on /data option.

I have 2 backups, & restored both with same problem!
Stock kernel!
Could I not copy both backups to pc, factory reset in settings, re-root, then flash backup!? as both backups (one done today & one last month!) can't be corrupt surely!?

Dude, you can't do much on stock kernel. you can't flash anything from stock kernel.
I suggest you remove everything and fully unroot your device by re-flashing stock firmware (and wipe data/cache etc)
Now flash a custom Kernel and then you can flash custom firmwares.

Well if you want to flash something like you tried to do before - you will need a custom kernel (which includes a custom recovery). With stock recovery you can't do much..

I just flashed latest samfirmware with mobile odin & wiped dalvik cache & kept root in the process & all is good again!
The only problem I've got now , which is one I've had in the past & forgotten how to resolve, is that I kept having a force close with rom toolbox pro, so I uninstalled & tried to reinstall my backup in Titanium Backup, but it just hangs!? I tried reinstalling it again after downloading the apk backup I have on my laptop, but it won't install coz it says there's insufficient space & tries to redirect me to apps manager in settings!
There is enough space (414mb internal memory/8.45gb internal sd/ & 27gb ext sd), as I've installed the light version straight from play store!! Any ideas on this??
Oh & I have CWM recovery.zip for recovery!
THNX!

Weird never had such issue. Try to delete it's data from application manager in settings then uninstall and re-install it again. Also, search for a odex file for rom toolbox pro in /data/app. If it's there - delete it.

Yeh, I tried all of that thnx! Got it resolved in the end, I'd already done everything you've just suggested & it worked!
So in the end, I used Mobile Odin Pro to wipe dalvik cache, enabled EverRoot, then enabled Inject Superuser & flashed last stock rom for my region from Samfirmware over the top of my corrupted rom, then all was good in the world again!
Thnx for your support m8, I should have known better but the alliance mods in the link of my first post were too good to resist, but I should have tried on deodex & not odex firmware, MY BAD!!

Glad it worked out in the end.
Also a pro-tip if you want, otherwise just ignore this:
You can flash the absolutely latest stock firmware compatible with your device even if it's not for your region

The firmware that got corrupted was "XWLSW" that was an OTA update! (I have the firmware safe on laptop! )
But the latest firmware for my region on Samfirmware, which is what I flashed, was "XWLSS"
But thnx again for the info!
Hey, this is the first time I'm posting a problem here. I have a Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro (I8552). I rooted my phone yesterday via cwm recovery, and then made a backup using ROM Manager. It rebooted my phone directly into a backup page where it started backing it up, but my internal memory wasn't big enough so it failed and since then I haven't been able to boot my phone up... When I try to turn it on it goes straight into CWM Recovery page, and when I click "reboot system now" it turns off the screen and then reboots it again into CWM Recovery...
Then, since I couldn't access the apps (as the phone won't start), I made another backup through CWM Recovery, but this time in my external SD Card which had about 6 gb free space. So it made and completed the backup without any problems. But when I restore it from my ext SD Card it restores the system and stuff but then when it comes to data it shows the message
Error while restoring /data!

. Every time.
And so I tried
wipe data/factory reset
Click to collapse
it does it, and completes the process, but still it won't boot up, neither by
reboot system now
Click to collapse
nor by removing battery and trying to restart.
Mind you, I didn't flash any new ROMs, it was still running my stock ROM when this happened...
So to sum up the things I've tried
1. Reboot system now
2. Backup in extSD Card (which worked) and restore from the same (which didn't work)
3. Wipe data/factory reset
Also one more thing, before any of this mess was made, right after I rooted my phone, I made a backup of all apps through the app called
Titanium Backup root
Click to collapse
.
Is there any way I can get out of this mess? And maybe make my phone accessible again.
And if somehow by sheer stroke of luck and your expertise, if I do get out of this mess, is there any way to root my phone again and recover the apps or appdata from the already made CWM backup? or the Titanium Backup I made (or is it gonna be gone because of the factory reset?).
Thank you in advance for any help or try you might

Yeah, but then will I be able to restore from the same backup (cwm) that's causing problems now, or will it not work even then?
And what about the backup I made with the Titanium Backup app, will I be able to retrieve app data from there?
Because the very reason I was backing it all up was to protect the app data, and it's pretty important. So is it possible to save it after stock flashing?
The stock recovery flasher will help u get out of that loop. Check the link posted above.

Thank you so much... the link worked like a charm. I flashed it through extSD card and it loaded and on clicking reboot it booted the phone right up. I had to go through the factory reset setting as I clicked it before. But almost no important data was lost. All photos videos and documents remained. And for better or for worse the whole thing actually made my phone a lot faster...
Thank you so much.
