If you don't need NFC I'd say the S2 is the next best for a smaller phone.
But if you have tiny hands just stick your fingers in fertilizer manure and hope your fingers grow.

Xperia V. Not out yet though I believe but soon. It will be missing some features but Sony usually has some of their own to make up for it sort of.
The LG Optimus G as well. The screen is almost as big but it's small for such a beast. Probably the same size as a 4.3 inch phone. Probably because it uses on screen buttons.
Another vote for Galaxy S2. Tons of good ROMs and developer support. 4.3" screen makes it easier for one-handed use.
GSG2 resolution isn't nearly as nice though. Ppi way down on the s3 if I remember correctly

Honestly, go for the LG Optimus G. Quadcore Qualcomm S4, 2gb, LTE, higher than HD screen, 13 mp camera all of that into those dimensions somehow.
4.7 mm shorter, 1.7mm less width, and 0.1mm thinner. Not sure if that is small enough for you but that is a noticeable size difference except in thickness, where the GS3 is already thin enough.
Oh, no. Don't go for the S2! After using the HD display on the S3, you won't be able to use the S2. Trust me.
I would have suggested the Galaxy Nexus but I recently discovered that it's only 1mm shorter than the S3. It's not quite as wide, though.

Xperia T is pretty cool and its performance is just as good as the S3.Only downside you will find is the screen, even tho it's HD but it got bad viewing angles and is kinda reflective...Not to mention that AMOLED got more vivid colors and better blacks. But the xperia T got Bravia engine so pics and videos will look better on the xperia(but it's just an image processing chip so it only works in videos and images).Other pretty good option is the galaxy nexus,it's more compact than the S3 while performing as good since it's a nexus phone but you won't get an sd slot and the camera isn't quite impressive.

Samsung NEEDS to make an S3 mini for those who want a smaller device with uncompromised specs. Look at the iphone 5, it fits so much tech in so little size. I have said it before that samsung is really missing out on lots of customers due to size of S3, S2 is not an option for those looking for a flagship phone. Galaxy nexus isnt either and it's not that much smaller to begin with.

I think a lot of people underestimate the Rezound. It is a powerful phone only to be held back with Verizon bloat and stuff. 342 PPI is incredible to me. Still one of the best displays out there. Who cares about AMOLED (even though it looks pretty damn good). I have friends with the GS3 and the GNEX. Looking at their phones is nice. But the screen resolution 1280x720 is amazing for a 4.3 inch screen. Wish we had some more up to date Sense 4 roms to compete with the look of the OS. 3.6 is getting kind of old IMO...I cannot move to AOSP because I am attached to the smoothness of sense! A bit off topic here but yeah.
Any input?

Yes one of the best screens to date on any smartphone (not counting those 5in tablet phones) if you consider ppi which rez has 342 best clarity out there. Only other one to compete ppi wise is Sony Experia s which has the same 342ppi with 720p
But for looks GSIII probably does have the best looking cause of samoled HD screen.
Also you know there is Sense 4 roms for the Rez?

So, there's been lots of speculation about a 5" HTC phone, and it's finally been announced. Not only 5" display, but the FIRST 5" display in the world to offer full HD 1080p resolution. Unfortunately, this one will not be sold outside of Japan. But, they have said that we can expect to see this display in phones around the world in upcoming models.
SOURCE: The Verge
The rumors were true: HTC has been working on a new flagship phone with a 5-inch 1080p display, and we got to see it in Tokyo today. It's the HTC J Butterfly, and it's set for a release this December on AU / KDDI. A follow-up to the previous HTC J, the Butterfly uses the same red and black color scheme and Rhyme-inspired skin, though this time it's running on top of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Inside there's a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, 2GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 lens.
The real attraction, though, is the 5-inch full HD Super LCD 3 screen — it's truly a sight to behold. The Super LCD 2 seen in HTC's previous flagship One X was arguably the best panel on the market, but we think its successor is the new champion. Color reproduction is excellent, the 440ppi resolution is astonishing, and the screen's slightly curved edges make the image look like it's melting off the side of the phone. It doesn't feel overbearing in the hands, either; the phone's 9.1mm thinness and slim bezel make it surprisingly compact, and we found it was easily pocketable. The J Butterfly's 2,020mAh battery is above average in capacity, though we're interested to find out how it'll keep up with powering so many pixels throughout the course of a day.
While this is a Japan-specific model and almost certain to stay that way, HTC reps told us that its display will be making its way into other phones around the world. If the J Butterfly is anything to go by, you should start to get excited.

I wonder if Butterfly sounds cooler in Japanese?
I'd love this + SD Card slot. I'd screw over my perfect update schedule for it.
Saw it last night, think I may have been drooling lol. I don't know how comfortable I would be with a 5 inch phone though, and no I don't think HTC Chou sounds any better lol
Gf says J chou sounds totally cooler because it's the name of some Asian pop singer lol

Oh you can bet we will see this phone or one almost identical to it. When, who knows. But it just makes me think Gs3 what?? Note 2 What??? LG nexus what?? This is simple the best phone announced to date...and thats just a simple fact.
I hope on the Evo, it's more of an edge to edge screen. If I have a 5" screen, I want it no wider than my LTE. It's kind of ugly (not a fan of the earpiece), but I bet that screen would make me forget all about it.
I'm kinda done with the constant up sizing of the screen... The Evo lte is almost too dang big already.. I'll definitely be looking elsewhere if 5" plus size screens are htcs only option in the future.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
The j butterfly is 143 x 71 x 9.1 mm, our Evo Lte's are 134.8 x 68.9 x 8.9 mm. Only 1/3 inch taller, and the the width and depth differences wouldnt even be noticeable. This phone has me excited, noting that KDDI is a CDMA carrier.
Oh man I sure wish the butterfly was our EVO instead of the jewel...
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Nice find. I always said this phone is already a bit too big. But the overall dimensions on the J butterfly are hardly bigger.
I see some pics with a big rectangle earpiece that I Dont like, but some other pics show an earpiece like the OG Evo which I really like. Not sure why the discrepancy.

Hey gents, I am looking to upgrade from my Xperia Ray some time in January or February and I am hoping that some of you guys can help me in narrowing down the search. So I compiled a small list of wanted features.
WANTED
Medium sized screen (4.3 inches or smaller)
Enough RAM to support android 4.2 and further upgrades (2gb or 1gb)
Dual or quad core for multitasking
Android system
Reasonable price (below 400 euro) - preferably less expensive
Do you have any suggestions? I am pretty open to any OEM.

I think you misread my post I am looking for a phone with a 4.3 inch screen or smaller. I dislike the huge phones and thought that it looked completely ridiculous when I saw a guy with a Galaxy Note 2 in the metro today.
But the Nexus 4 could be a phone that made me go for an exception. I have had a sweet eye on this phone since the start of November. I am just a bit thrown off by the size of it. A screen with 4.7 inches is not possible to be operated with one hand for a guy with medium-small sized hands.

The Nexus 4 is tempting, but I dont see it becoming nearly as cheap in Denmark as on Play Store anytime soon
Xperia S seems to be a nice phone, but it seems to be slippery because of the back and the shape. Also it looks a bit wierd with the huge attachment to the bottom.
Xperia ion I will have to look in to, because it has not crossed my mind earlier.
With regards to the S2: Xperia Ray has had 4.2 for 2 days now, I consider that pretty fast

I am planning to get a new phone and i cannot decide between the One X+ (international ver.) and the LG Nexus 4 (N4).
I want:
Extremely Smooth.
A nice UI (User Interface) to brag about.
A future proofed phone
Hard Gaming
Downloading - Wifi g/b/n optional /a
Above average battery life - lasts a day or more.
And lastly, i will not root my phone as soon as i get it - but i might think about it. But, it may be unlikely.
For:
I would get a N4. but, i hate the fact that i would not be able to get HTC's awesome widgets. - Weather...
The N4 is basically similar to Apex Launcher.
Against:
I am getting tired of the sense interface. It is very similar to Gingerbread. - which makes it kind of boring.
Nexus has the new gen specs - flagship processor, 2GB Ram..
I am actually happy with my current HTC Desire Z - rooted with ELITEMOD. But the thing which annoys me a lot is the battery life - 7-8 hours minimal use - no games.
Other phone suggestions are welcome. Not LG, GS3, iPhone.
PS. I like touchwiz, but the SGS3 is not a option.
I dislike the name LG, so it is not a option - Yes i am picky. With a exception for the Nexus series.
...A decently new phone which WILL get the Jellybean update.
Update:
If you are reading this in 2013, I recommend getting the HTC M7, Nexus 7, or if you are in the main stream get the S4, or the New Samsung Galaxy Note (not the note 2).
Rumours say the M7 n the new galaxy note will have a camera which is above 10 megapixels. Rumours also say the HTC M7 will have a tegra 4 processor.

How about the Razr HD Maxx?
3300mAh battery, so plenty for extended gaming sessions, and it is due to get Jellybean very soon. Might not be cutting edge enough on the specs front though with only a dual core S4 & 1gb ram.
I've only had my One X+ for 8 days and haven't done much gaming to be honest, but I have noticed that extended periods of browsing can chew through the battery, so gaming would run it down even quicker ( depending on your screen brightness level I suppose )
Tbh if the Razr had an lcd / ips screen I would have one now instead of the One X+ as I hate amoled screens. That was the only thing that stopped me picking one up.

For me it's how they can over saturate the colours, and that whites can look more of a grey / blue colour than proper white. You do get deeper blacks with an amoled screen though.
It doesn't bother most people to be honest, and a lot of people like the over saturated look, but I personally prefer the more natural image quality & colours of a good lcd / ips screen.

Yes, but the user is allocated with a specific amount which lowers than 16gb and 8gb (which ever the other model has)

Just to chime in
I've been kicking around the same decision re: Nexus 4 vs HOX+. Having a Nexus 7, I love the look of stock Jellybean. Not a fan of the Sense Graphics/Themes and find the look dated (as mentioned in this thread already). If there was a foolproof way to install AOSP on the HOX+ and get the Google OTA updates, that would make my decision for me. If anyone knows of this option, I'm all ears.
Not to hijack the thread or anything. If I have to start a new one, I will. But since the OP original decision making process may require this info (really reaching here) then it could be answered without a new thread subject.
On another note, the reason for my leaning to the OneX+ is: Design: the feel of this phone in the hand is second bar none. Screen: Superb. Storage: Huge and therefore, lack of SD not a concern. Second Iteration: the kinks have been worked out of its construction, quality appears very good. Camera: One of the best 8mp on a smartphone with good camera software to boot.
Negative: Software: UI Design looks old, less sophisticated to my eyes. Updates: with stock Sense 4+ they will be slow and most likely stop before updates stop rolling out for the Nexus 4 stock.
Get the HOX+ its a no brainer really!!!!! Its the best device out right now!!! Even better than the DNA. I just got mine today, coming from a HTC ONE X, this phone is perfect. Its got 64gb of storage, jb, and sense......what else could a guy want?!!!! Its the perfect device in my mind.

+1 zound knows better by the way, zound how's the overall shift to X+?
Where is the "line" for you?
For me, this phone is the perfect size but I was willing to use the S3. I really wouldn't want bigger than that.

Personally I love borderline tablet devices. I would love to have the lgog in the size of the note 2.

If I hve helped you press the thanks button ...
Jumbo phones
I think that cell phones in history have taken a weird turn - started out like holding a brick to your face, then they got smaller and smaller, but now all the high end phones are jumbo phones.
Not much you can do when it's packing a quad core processor, etc.
Honestly I think my LGOG is the largest I'd go. SG3 maybe is easier to hold, but is taller. I really like iPhone 5 form factor, but screen too narrow.
I went to local ATTs and played with each until I was sure.
If you told me I would be using 4.7 inch back when I had my iPhone I wouldn't believe you

I can't go smaller now, but my jean's pockets are about maxed out with the OG. I'd go bigger, but I'd need jeans with deeper pockets, ha ha.
I had the Inspire for a long time and loved the size of the screen.
After I got the OG, I was like, Damn that's small..
This is pretty perfect. Other phones too massive for me.
As far as my normal everyday phone use goes, I'm maxed out with the OG. Honestly, it's mainly because I can't fit anything bigger in my pocket without worrying I'll snap it in half. I have and old Galaxy Tab that I love for watching movies, reading, etc when waiting in line somewhere. And a Xoom for certain situations at work

3.7..? Did you mean 4.7 at all?
If not, what phone do you have lol. And what made you come here if you're fine with it? :x
my nex7 fits in my pocket......
I moved from a Samsung Captivate to the LGOG. I "tolerate" the LGOG size for the features and better screen, though I prefer the Captivate for pocketability. I wouldn't go any bigger than the LGOG regardless of features.
I think its 4.7' for me. I don't see a reason for any bigger really. I have a tablet, a laptop, and a 55 inch TV so if I ever need a bigger screen, I have it.
Nexus One
The 3.7 inch screen on the Nexus One was personally my favorite size.
Optimus G is the biggest I'm willing to go. I can't see myself going any bigger.
Don't think I can handle anything bigger than the LGOG E970 due to arthritic fingers. This phone size is still comfortable even though I use 2 hands a lot. Love the screen size due to eyesight, etc. I have 7", 8.9", & 10" screen tablets for bigger screen needs.
With smartphones, started off with 4", then went to 4.3", then to this LG. No bigger for me.

I jumped from an iPhone 4 to our device and I still don't believe how comfortable I am with such a larger size. That said, I absolutely love it and wouldn't even trade for the Nexus 4 at this point!
To answer the original question, I'd say the largest I'd go is probably around 5 inches, maybe 5.5 if I had a chance to hold it before I bought it. I have huge hands, and so it's more a question of what will fit in my pocket!
Sent from my LG Optimus G - I can't believe it's not Project Butter!
I have to say 4.5". I love the LGOG but I think it is just a tad bit too big. Maybe I wouldn't notice it, if the back button wasn't so far away. But it's barely one-handable.

Lucky for me I'm left handed I might go up to 5. My friend has the note 2 and I have to say that it is not comfortable to use. I actually thought that this was too big at first after the first couple of days, but now that I have used it for a while it's just about perfect.
