I downloaded a 4.0.4 LPW firmware update via Samsung KIES today and upgraded to that from my previous 4.0.3 LP8 firmware (with a rooted kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399). I realise now that this was apparently a big mistake because I immediately got a bunch of "unfortunately, XXX has stopped" error messages after rebooting. This includes an incessant "unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stopped.
I have useed the emmc brickbug app to confirm i have some "insane" chip and the brick bug?
I read through the instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756242&highlight=emmc. Then I tried reverting to the previous LP8 firmware using Sammobile and Odin (including flashing a LP8 kernel to re-root), but I'm still geting those error messages, and my SGS2 is very(!) slow to respond.
I'm not sure how to move on from here.
Should I:
1. Keep flashing the LP8 kernel or firmware again and hope for a different outcome?
2. flash some kind of custom ROM?
3. wait for some other kind of firmware update from Samsung?
Grateful for any advice.
regards
Update: My phone is unsable now with the constant "has stopped" errors. I'm going to try the 4.0.4 update through Kies again and report back.
Update2: Second update via Kies to 4.0.4 seems to have removed most of those error messages. It's at least usable now. However I want to root and when I look at the kernel verison I see "3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Wed Aug 22 22:55:24 KST 2012." It doesn't say "LPW" or anyhting similar to help me identify a rooted kernel to download to gain root accesss. I'll have to investigate other rooting options (downloading a rooted kernel was the only method I was familiar with).
Download the latest Siyah kernel (tar) and flash via Odin. You will get root access.
Here is the link for the latest Siyah v4.1.5
http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/09/08/siyahkernel-s2-v4-1/
And also in the meanwhile don't do anything on the stock kernel, you run the risk of bricking your phone.

You need to wipe data / factory reset or at least wipe dalvik cache. You can do this safely from cwm of custom kernel (Siyah will be the best) or 4.0.3 stock kernel.
Don't do any wipes on stock 4.0.4 kernel with modified recovery if your emmc chip is known as insane.

See i am not reading your above post currently, but i think you must re download your 4.0.3 Firmware Package...
Flash it via odin..
Flash CWM or Siyah Recovery and Wipe Everything...
You're Done Now.
Stay Risk Free...
But if you Really want 4.0.4 then Download full Package and then flash it via odin...
It wont Give You Errors, i think...
But seriously why you use kies?
& why you want 4.0.4?

Yes, don't do any wipes before if your current kernel is stock 4.0.4.
i9.0.1.3k galaxy imperator
Make sure you DON'T wipe data/factory reset in the stock recovery in 4.0.4. Immediately flash Siyah Kernel or Dorimanx through Odin to remove the MMC_ERASE_CAP which causes nasty bricks if you wipe in stock 4.0.4. Then you can wipe in Siyah Kernel CWM and flash a custom 4.0.4 ROM or 4.1 ROM of your choice.

You need to clear your cache partition, do it twice for good measure.
That solved my stopped messages after updating with Kies, be careful as the guys above have said. Flash another kernel then do it.

This should do,
1) Backup everything
2) Install Siyah Kernel (latest: http://www.gokhanmoral.com/?p=1536) using Odin (tar file)
3) Now you are rooted with Siyah Kernel and a CWM based recovery
4) You can then install any ROM/Kernel of your choice (if you need)

hello, i recently bought a SGS2 and i was just wondering, if i use kies to update the current XXKF2 kernel to the new KG5 one (also jumps from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 right?) will this process factory reset my phone? will i get to keep my current layout of apps and cellular operator settings or is it all gone?
oh, i forgot, is there an insecure KG5 kernel yet to root with?
Hi! I really dont know if it will reset the phone but if its just the kernel it should no change it. I would recommend you to do a nandroid backup (google) with clockwork. There should be an insecure kernel, after the backup update it. Then root it go into clockwork - advanced restore and restore ONLY DATA. This should work.
Note: if you need the insecure kernel please tell me the build version i'll provide a link.

Kies does not update a kernel its a full firmware update .
Kies updates do not normally wipe the phone but you should have a backup .
jje
Scratch that, kies is being stupid and wont connect to the server so i cant update this way anymore, but i guess i can still use odin, im just not sure what kernels to use for the update and what kernels to use for the root, there are so many threads about this, im just getting more and more confused lol.
im currently running:
baseband:XXKF2
Kernel:XXKF2
Build:XXKF2
i'd like to update to the latest root-able firmware,
so if you can provide me with the link need i will appreciate it,
from what i gathered i need to flash the updated stock files, then flash the insecure files, the reflash the updated stock to remove the yellow warning sign, i think.
thanks.

Hi Guys could anyone give me a hand. early today I soft bricked my SGS2 trying to remove yellow triangle. Before that I was on SensatioN ROM 3.5 ICS by Crysis21 and Kernel Syiah 3.3.2 .
I was able to bring it back to life with help of the thread Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII
Now I am on GB 2.3.5 kernel I9100XXKI3 I have rooted it with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KI3-42-v4.2-CWM4
My problem is I would like to go back to my 4.0.3 Sensation ROM. I cannot flash Syiah kernel and restore my backup with CWM. What can I do to achieve this.
I am hoping for your help
You have to restore your backup via cwm5, not cwm4
Do these with Odin!!!
1. Flash a stock official samsung ICS firmware (let's say XWLPG)
2. Flash latest siyah kernel (the one for odin, not cwm!!!)
then restore your backup.
thanks

I did the ICS version of neerajganga from thread Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII and it was successful. I tried this to bring me closer to my goal... I am sending in my i9100 for service and I need it to be completely stock.
Anyway, I was reading up on some guides and it looked like the easiest way was to use Triangle Away and then flash a stock ROM via ODIN. I got my SGS2 in Sweden, so I will be using a stock ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
Anyway, I haven't used my SGS2 in around 2 months since I got an S3. It's running a very old version of ICS AOKP, Ressurection Remix I believe, with CM9 kernel. I had Siyah kernel flashed previously as well. The whole EMMC bug is kind of confusing it to me. If I just make a nandroid backup, wipe data, then flash stock I9100XWLPX in ODIN, will I have any issues, or will this get me completely to stock without bricking my device?

If you are sending your phone for service under warranty then it's better you follow this steps:
1. Use triangle away app to reset binary counter : forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
2. Visit Sammobile and download the firmware for your country : www.sammobile.com/firmware/
Registration is free.
3. Extract the firmware from zip file and Flash the firmware via Odin
Your phone should not be bricked if you follow the instructions

Also, I leave F Reset Time and Auto Reboot checked, right?

Hi, beloved developers
I recently try German version ICS 4.0.4 on my S2G. It works done but it wasn't write Arabic so I changed it to Pakistan version 4.0.4 as it read/write Arabic.
I don't wipe data from recovery mode, I just make factory reset before and after installing the "Official Rom" - as I don't try to flash a custom rom till now because I'm afraid from it - from the phone setting.
BUT, I read a topic which made me panic which was about emmc check. I downloaded the program from google play and run it and "Yes, Insane chip" appeared, Then I try XDA tool too and " danger" message appeared.
Now, I can't wipe data from recovery mode and can't flash a custom rom or any thing from RM or what (Safe or not?).
Please, What's the solution?
I want to flash a kernel what is the appropriate kernel to my phone, and Is it break my warranty or not?
Root or unroot my phone? your opinion please?

But what about the first part of the question about insane chip
You don't need to worry about the insane chip if you're completely stock. Wiping/factory reset won't trigger the bug. If you flash a custom kernel, make sure that it has that bug disabled.

1. You can wipe / factory reset in Stock recovery only. You can also wipe your phone by going to Settings > Backup & Reset, instead of booting to Recovery. Nothing bad should happen
2. Yes there is no problem
3. If you want to flash custom ROM, it's better you flash a safe custom kernel first before messing with the phone
4. Nothing bad will happen if you root your device only. However, If you wipe, create or restore backup in CWM recovery while running the Stock 4.0.4 kernel, then your phone will be bricked!
If you want to unroot and claim warranty, it's much better to flash back the stock ROM.
5. The best way to avoid this bug is by doing one of the following.
a. If you want to stay on ICS 4.0.4 stock firmware, then don't use CWM recovery at all!
b. If you want to flash custom ROM or want to you use CWM recovery, then it's better you flash a safe custom kernel first
c. Downgrade to ICS 4.0.3 firmware

Thanks,
I'm sorry for my lots of questions.
- I understand that (CWM) is a custom recovery can be flashed by odin and it delete the original phone recovery mode and this CWM may brick my phone under android 4.0.4.
- I understand that if I wan't to flash a custom rom I should use CWM recovery and to use it I must flash custom kernel but official kernel is dangerous. then I can flash any custom rom and wipe data from CWM recovery.
- Is stock rom is any official rom? or where can I get it?
- I understand that the bug reason is from 4.0.4 kernel and if I downgrade to ICS 4.0.3 the bug will disappear.
- In my Case what is the appropriate kernel to avoid this bug. and appropriate root ?

1. Yes. There are temporary CWM recoveries too, which will not DELETE the stock recovery but overall, you are correct
2. Yes
3. I don't understand this question
4. Yes
5. Read my comprehensive answer below.
After going through All the kernels available for your phone (GT I9100G), these are my conclusions and recommendations
1. All custom kernels available for your phone are not fully compatible with ICS 4.0.4.
If you flash any custom kernel,
- Your phone may/may not boot
-Your bluetooth will not work!
-Only one custom kernel with the above bugs is safe for ICS 4.0.4
2. If you only want to ROOT your phone, visit this thread
Only method 2, is recommended for your phone. You will be safe if you don't wipe, create/restore backup in the temporary CWM recovery. Just follow the instructions
3. If you want to flash custom ROMs and kernels, then you have to first downgrade to ICS 4.0.3 firmware, then ROOT with any method in the link I provided in 2.

i understand your question now.
If you want to totally unroot your device to claim warranty, then visit Sammobile website, download the original firmware for your country, then flash it. This will fully unroot your phone and make it ready for warranty claim.
If you want to unroot only, then you can just flash any stock firmware.
Note: ALWAYS had the rooting method that won't increase your binary counter! This one is very important for warranty claim in future.

"Always USE the rooting method that won't increase your binary counter"
Ok. I'll explain.
1. When you flash any file not signed by Samsung eg Custom kernel or ROM via Odin, it will increase you binary counter ( You will see this binary counter when you boot your device into download mode)
2. If you flash custom kernel/ROMs via CWM recovery, it will not increase the binary counter
3. This binary counter increases as you flash more custom kernels/ROMs via Odin to your phone.
4. When you take/send your phone to Samsung to claim warranty, the first thing the technician will try to check is the binary counter if possible.
5. On GT I9100, It is extremely very easy to reset this counter. with an app.
6. On your phone GT I9100G however, it is very hard to reset the binary counter. I know you can use the USB jig to reset it, but it may not work on new bootloaders which i guess you have already.
These are the reasons why I advised you to Root your phone with method 2 in that Rooting tutorial, which will not increase you binary counter.
Thank you, man
as Samsung till now don't update GT-I9100G with gelly bean. I decided to flash a custom rom
I downgrade as you advised me to ICS 4.0.3 KSA but I still have Insane chip
Now I must flash a CWM to flash the custom rom, It's safe to do this now as I will wipe data from it (CWM)
1-What is the appropriate CWM to my phone? and how can I flash it Via odin or Via Recovery mode?
2-I'm living in KSA which rom i choose [JB][4.2.1] CyanogenMod 10.1 official nightlies or [JB 4.1.2][PA2.55][AOKP-ML1][CM10]P.A.C True All in 1 ROM? as I need mobile to read and write arabic without any external applications.

Dear all,
Im plannig to manually update to 4.1.2 my s2
Actually my s2 has:
base band version: I9100XXLQ6
kernel: Siyah-s2-v5.0.1+
Compilation number: IMM76D.XWLPZ
*#1234#
PDA: I9100XWLPZ
PHONE: I9100XXLQ6
CSC: I9100OXXLPV
Build sep 21 2012
Also i did a backup with cwm.
I did a backup because i can't found a stock rom with the same pda, phone and csc
Before install, i will not have any problem doing the manually update via ODIN ???
If the update is possible, after install can i restore my cwm backup and everything will be ok???
Thanks!!

If you restore your CWM backup, you'll be back on whatever version you backed up before you updated. It'll be like you didn't update at all.
@ctomgee are you sure that cwm backup ALL ?
After updating to JB how could i do the restore? CWM will be deleted after updating (i guess). I will have to install siyah kernel to JB ???
Thanks!!!

Yes. You should probably read some guides. This is a basic question that has been asked over and over and over and over and...... you get the point. Look in General at the stickies.

What restore? What are you trying to accomplish, exactly? are you trying to just upgrade to JB and retain all data/etc?

Do you mean you will no longer have CWM recovery after updating? If so, then yes, this is true. You will have the Samsung stock recovery image after updating, until you install a kernel that has a permanent CWM recovery image in it.

I don't even know what you're asking here. If you're asking if you have to install Siyah kernel before upgrading to JB, no, not necessarily. It might be a good idea if your phone has a eMMC chip susceptible to the brick bug, AND you're currently on a 4.0.4 firmware from Samsung. If either one of those conditions is NOT true, then you don't have to worry about it.
He asked if he'll have to flash siyah, as in mandatory.

You know my idea is:
backup all the information with CWM ( i did)
Update to 4.1.2 via ODIN (no yet)
After update to 4.1.2 and i dont like jb (or maybe i have a problem), i want to go back to 4.0.4 how can i restore my old backup???
The update will delete CWM? If the update delete CWM is possible to reinstall it?

Ok, this was NOT clear in your first post whatsoever.
Yes, if you update to 4.1.2, the update will remove CWM recovery. To restore your old 4.0.4 backup if you are dissatisfied with 4.1.2, you should:
- re-flash 4.0.4 via Odin
- then re-flash the same version of Siyah you had while you were on 4.0.4 previously (to get CWM recovery back)
- then boot to CWM recovery, and restore.
Then you should be back where you were before you updated.

Why would he need to flash 4.0.4 again via ODIN? Thats just a waste of time and not needed. He can simply flash Siyah in ODIN, reboot into recovery and flash his backup.

I suggested it for maximum compatibility, in case he doesn't boot into recovery. Chances are good he would boot loop in that scenario, and it takes (wastes) just a minute or so.
There a manual to how to restore a cwm backup with odin?
I search without results
Thanks!

You found no results because you can't do what you're asking for. Odin flashes .tar packages. CWM backups are not .tar packages.
