im using precise pangolin and i im looking to get started with source builds....but i heard that building on ubuntu 12.04 is experimental will it actuall\y work shall i stick to the current os install a fresh copy of an older one...or will the issues eventually get fixed i need your help guys

if you're looking to compile only jellybean and future builds, ubuntu 12.04 will be fine.

im trying for cm7 and above as i'm a part of a legacy forum which doesnt have officuial ics...so any suggestions ?

I've noticed a few CM7 ROMs popping up for the Droid Eris, and wanted to take a shot at compiling a ROM. Unfortunately, the Droid Eris isn't a supported device in the Cyanogenmod downloads, as far as I can tell. Which source is being used for these ROMs? is it a generic source, or is it different for each device?

This link should help, it's the cyanogenmod link to the newest nightly build which is RC1, it's the same build that Workshed based him GB rom on.

To find these easily just go to www.cyanogenmod.com and at the top right of the website, click on "Devices" and then find the HTC Hero (CDMA) and click on that. Hope this all helps !

workshed is not using the Hero CDMA build for GSB. He is compiling directly from source. If you look at the source, there are vendor trees for official devices included in the source. workshed has a vendor tree for the Eris that he uses with the source to build his ROM.
Take a look at EasyDev and how it works. It will give you an idea of what's going on.
tazz is taking the Hero CDMA build and making it work for the Eris. The two devices are so close, that porting from the HeroC pretty much always works well.

Yes, if I recall correctly it was from 2.3 (Gingerbread) on that requires 64-bit Linux to compile.
I was just checking cause the CM Wiki had instructions for building on 32, but whenever I'd try to compile, it'd error out. So I wound up switching to 64-bit.

Does that mean that with that kernel you can run Android programs in like Ubuntu? Because that would just be awesome.
Many apps are there for Android but not desktop Linux ( Android is still Linux ).

Ubuntu for Android has been out for a few weeks, but I think this new kernel will allow easier programming between Android and Linux....
easier crossprogramming and easier porting of new features / fixes between linux and android kernels

Yes but we can not get it. They didnt release any source code yet. In ubuntu for Android you can indeed open Android apps in ubuntu.
But what about on Ubuntu for pc's? There it is not possible.

When you say been out for weeks, can you install it? It seems like its still being developed and will come out later this year.

They want to bundle it with phone manufacturers, so that they can have Ubuntu for Android on there devices.
Is there anyone trying to install Ubuntu Phone Sola? I wonder if we can install it. I have seen someone that installed Ubuntu on other Xperia.

You need to build it from source for Sola.
Wait for cm10.1 for sola to get stable first.
Then I think ubuntu phone will then be more likely to happen.

even if cm10.1 gets stable.. making a stable ubuntu will take extreme level of expertise...there is some major problem related to ril in ubuntu (not sure if its solved now)

Hey, I successfully built Ubuntu Touch for my Xperia P nypon but somethings mixed up with the blobs. The display is not working because surfaceflinger is crashing with a segmentation fault.
I think with TeamCanjis efforts Ubuntu Touch is indeed possible on our xperia devices.

if you are developing for phones you should use the stock kernel of your phone as base. if you want to build android for an intel based notebook, the newest "normal" linux kernel should be your choice.
Not sure if he means the actual kernel for android or if he is asking which LInux version is best to install for his development environment.
If you mean the latter then you can't go wrong with ubuntu/xubuntu/linux mint. Many people go with Xubuntu/Ubuntu 12.04. The only difference between those 2 is what the desktop looks like. I recommend following a guide like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2355078

PAC ROM 4.4.2 for all mdpi, by bro langes:

for building you need to run any sort of linux. & its not that easy (need knownledge, the repo is also about 40 gig's) also 32bit is not the problem only it will take many hours to build then bcuz of low ram....

Btw I was told that its impossible to build android 4.1+ on 32-bit machines..
Can u confirm that my 32-bit Ubuntu can successfully build pa4..?
Its kinda difficult to test myself as u said the sources are ~ 40GiB..

I don't think so. AFAIK ,the compiler required for JB+ ROMs is 64 bit only. Therotically, you can try an old 32 bit compiler(older NDK) and "try" to compile. and It might just compile .But practical implications may vary :angel: . Switching to 64-bit is easier..

I've made a mini research and found from many sources exactly the same thing..Anyways i'll probably wait for someone with knowledge and a 64-bit machine to build PA4..
