[Q] Is AT&T giving faster downloads on a stock ROM? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I have always had a hunch that AT&T is adjusting data speeds, and that the speed you get on the phone is a result of factors other than modem, and how busy a particular server is. For instance, at my home base I was getting consistent 3-4 Mbps regardless which ROM or which modem I was using.
But I remember this clearly, whenever I had just loaded a new ROM and ran Speedtest my speed was always 5-6 Mbps. I would see that only once, then each successive Speedtest was in the normal range.
OK, a few weeks ago my camera started acting up and AT&T decided to send me a replacement phone. The replacement phone comes with 4.0.3 and the CLE5 modem. AT&T now displays 4G next to the reception indicator.
So, I run my speedtests again to see where things stand and I am surprised to see an average of 7 Mb/s.
Is AT&T throttling data speeds based on if you have a non stock ROM?

It may depend on your APN settings.

I never touch APN settings, they are what they are.

No at&t is not throttling.
You probably didnt have the LE5 modem before.

Simple upgrades coming from refurbished phones. Brand new all stock phones some got the updates, some are still bogged down and not even thought of as broken in. Bloatware?

It displays 4G to fool people into thinking that's what it is. It isn't. They just changed the data icon to look like that. It's 3g. Or HSPA +.

I am giving specific download rates, with and without AT&T roms.
I am not talking about what it shows on the bar.

A lot of ROMs when flashed give the default WAP.Cingular apns and they are slower. Changing APN to one in the thread DO HELP. In my area I can go from 2.5 to 7 normally with APN settings. I have even seen 11Mbs on a few occasions at non peak hours.

3G Speeds, Slower than even Edge?

Ok, so I am convert from AT&T and my iPhone 3gs - One of the first apps I like to run is Speed Test so I can gauge what I should be getting - and on my iPhone I used to get 1300 or so K download, and 175 up.
I have run speedtest a few times today and in 10 tests I pull an average of70kbps download and 283up .... Someone please tell me this isnt normal .... Granted that we have a very cloudy day with rain here in Buffalo, but I cant imagine this is even close to what I should get in DL speeds?
in my office building i only get "yellow" for service and right now im getting 585 dl and 61 ul. outside is even better
4g i get 6703 dl and 1430 ul
much better than the 4g in here btw. i don't think i broke 2000 dl inside here, and my status never went above the grey color
Yeah, something isnt right here - I hate to say it, but I may have to call support....
Is the network really congested in your area? I get speeds like that at Tigers games.

Update your PRL. 01120 Should be good. If you don't get 01120, try updating it like 6 times in a row. Oddly enough, its how I got on 01120, which someone who's confused about who-the-man is, says it's biz only PRL. I'm not biz though, I was just sittin here and kept hitting update and it changed to it. Not sure if there's something in the system that allows it to happen or what.
With 4/6 bars on EVDO I'll get ~1500 down and ~800 up
WiMax 1/3 bars 4500 down and 1400 up (1400 is highest upload pretty much)
WiMax 2/3 = 7000 down
and 3/3 tethered = 13000
I stopped at the store and they said it more than likely all the activations, man where they packed, 3D phones going left and right (and some other models).
Also did the PRL update, didnt seem to fix anything ... Ill give them until Next week for these speed issues.

well coming from at&t 3g to sprint 3g is a 50% reduction in speed on paper. cdma is capped at 3.1mbps while gsm is at 7.2. one reason id switch to a more capable technology were it not for the data caps. but you are right, sprints 3g speeds need to be faster. i for one am dissatisfied with sprints 3g.

I've had 2.4Mb down and 1.1 up on EVDOA. Sadly only recently has the WiMax u/l been lifted to 1.5. 2.4Mb down on a cell phone is quite a bit. Granted it's more in the 1 - 1.5Mb range on average, what do you do besides youtube that you'd need more than that? Tethering? Most websites take longer for the phones to process than it does to download the actual content.
Well, I honestly cannot even stream music with the 60k Im getting. It skips alot.... I also used to do Netflix in my car for lunch (Connected to my LCD Screen). Im not looking for 2Mb or anything close, but I would expect anything around 700kbs to 1.2Mbs or so..

me too...me too.
I had the same issue since Wednesday, couldn't get over 120kbps on 3G. Sprint had me redo the activation and it fixed my issues.
You'll need access to the data programming menu, so you have to have your MSL code. Type ##3282# in the dialer, then use your MSL as the password. Go to the data menu and then hit the menu key and click Restore. It'll re-run the activation, update PRL, then update firmware.
Hope it works for others.
3G speeds
I am also getting terrible 3G speeds. Highest I've seen thus far is 130kbps. I had the phone reactivated, restored the data profile and still no luck. I went into the Sprint retail location and they did say that since there has been so many activations and bandwidth usage today, the 3G speeds have been extremely slow. I am expecting these data speeds to rise within the next day or two otherwise its going back...

I am posting from Centreville, VA (Fairfax, Northern Virginia area) and I will add that my 3G speeds are horrid.
With full bars the Spider Man game stopped at like 15% download progress and kept failing....I certainly hope this is because of activations or else I will be going back to my Samsung Galaxy S 4G from T-Mobile where I get 4G signal everywhere I go....unlike Sprint.
Sprint isnt exactly known for its fast data speeds. You guys are more than likely in an area with slower speeds, like myself.
I highly doubt that the data speeds are as slow as they have been within the past 24 hours. If that was the case, no one would have sprint....I am confident it will pick up.
I am also getting really slow speeds. This is my first time with Sprint, so I'm not sure if this is the norm.
Anyone, previously on Sprint, noticing slower speeds after getting 3vo?

slower then edge speeds? lol .. . my sister has the Evo and she gets about 1.2 mb at my house, i get between 3kbps-124kbps
I went to the Sprint store where I bought the phone and I was told phone data is not like Comcast, and that it can be spotty and sometimes give you 3kbps because it is not Comcast, and I'm welcomed to return the phone if I'd like.
Coming from verizon, in the new hampshire area. My service on sprint has been sub par with terrible download speeds. I hope things improve, because I really do like the phone.

.02 down and .01mb up... This phone is probably going back.

[Q] Where did my 4G speed go?

So I am running CM7 and I have been running since the first build, all of a sudden my speeds are not there. I am at less than 2 mbps where I used to be running 12+. I have changed the radio to both the m2 and m2.5 with no luck at all.
Things I have tired:
Wiping 3 times / Clearing cache 3 times and reloading newest version
Leave battery out of phone for an hour
Rebooting
Changing locations where I test (I am in a well covered 4g area)
Testing another persons phone with the same build at the same spot (they pulled down 18 mpbs)
I am out of ideas can anyone think of anything else.
-Xaikar
Bump? Willing to take any ideas anyone!
i've noticed my speeds have gone down as well. and no matter what variation of radio/rom/kernal i try, the speeds just aren't as fast as they used to be.
i wonder if verizon's finally started throttling people who still have the old unlimited data.
Well one big factor is that finally the Dual Core/LTE phones are here. So those that did have unlimited data are FINALLY renewing and grabbing the latest device.
Also 3-8 phones currently being bought at Verizon are 4g, so that's another factor. It was only a matter of time before the speeds fall back to the same 4g as Sprint/AT&T
That is just my small thought/opinion.

Exynos not compatible with AT&T Network. Only HSPA+ I have the HTC One X Quad core on Straight Talk (AT&T MVNO) and get gravy HSPA+ speeds here in Charlotte
so what your saying is no matter what i will not get any better speeds than 1.5 and lower. i get 3g/4g/h+ on my SGS3 right now. unless there just false indicators in the notification bar so i dont see the incompatibility.

There is definitely something going on with the SGS3. Right next to my unbranded SGS2/GT-I9100, I'm getting much lower speeds on the exact same network. I'm talking 7.5Mbps vs 3Mbps on AT&T.
Not sure if the modem's just not optimized for the US AT&T networks (yet).
Thank for the test, i really didnt think this was normal. i hoping to find a modem that works well enough to get me the 3-4 mbps......
right now, all yesterday......i could NEVER even get above 300kbps
i love the phone less this aspect of it right now.

to the OP and anyone experiencing slow network speeds, check you apn settings on the phone make sure you have the ATT phone apn selected (apn name phone) instead of the default Cingular apn...Phone is the HSPA+ apn but on unlocked international phones it defaults to the APN provided by your sim which is the Cingular one...case in point on my nexus i have to always manually input the phone APN after flashing a rom...
also even though 2 phones running on the same network maybe in the same physical location, they may not be connected to the same Cell Site Tower, as such each phone maybe communicating with different towers with varying degrees of network congestion, thereby affecting your speeds...it could also just be the area you're in...as another ATT user with an international s3 has posted screens of him gettin 8mb down

I'm don't think you can switch to the phone APN on the $10/$15 medianet plan... has this changed?
I understand cell towers, but you have to realize you're really reaching with that explanation... especially when I am able to get consistent 6-7.5Mbps ALL DAY on the GT-I9100 when I have not been able to hit 3.5Mbps downloads sitting in my office all morning. I'm talking well over 10 tests at various times throughout the day, SOMETHING is up.
CONFIRMED: phone APN does NOT work on the medianet plan, so let's not muddy the water and confuse the issue at hand.

Well if you can't change the APN..you can either complain to ATT or try another S3...for me when I first got my GNex I got crap slow speeds on HSPA+ till changing the APN...but I am not on a medianet plan..

That's the point, I'm talking about the medianet plan, and getting much faster speeds on a phone sitting right next to it. Repeatable results too.
Again, has nothing to do with APN in this case.

NO, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying I'm seeing significantly slower speeds than my UK GT-I9100 when running the same exact speed tests at various times during the day. Could just be a modem issue as these phones were launched for the UK region, who knows.
Okay thanks, looking to purchase a galaxy s3 and justifying the savings from the 5gb data vs medianet plan to my wife. BTW what color is yours?

Latest ICS leak (3.14.605.10 710RD) S-ON -- slower 4g speeds!

Hey all,
So i've noticed that after flashing to this new leak from stock GB firmware, my 4g data speeds have dropped significantly. Originally after purchasing this phone i was able to achieve 30mbps consistently. Not too long after i flashed the ICS sandwich leak, just couldn't wait for Verizon! now my 4g speeds don't seem to get over 12mbps very often. The same has happened to my upload speeds but i couldn't tell you the numbers without verifying. My question is has anyone else seen this same situation?? I unfortunately cannot be sure this has been caused by the new ICS radios because a lot was changed in between my test times. Besides the ruu flash, many apps were installed, bloatware was frozen with TB, and a extended battery used. I was hoping to find an answer on here before factory restoring my phone to see if an app caused this, or possibly it is a SIM card issue. I contacted verizon (leaving out a few details on what i had done of course) and they were unable to tell me much besides anything over 10mbps was good speed. Any help with getting my data back to 30mbps would be aprreciated!

You were getting 30Mb/s?!?!? How the heck did you ever get that? Out of tens of thousand of speed tests on Speedtest.net marked "Verizon 4G LTE" less than 50 tests in total even break the 20mbps barrier with the average being about 14Mb/s. In the few rare areas I can actually get 4G around here if I can get 10Mb/s I feel very lucky, and even on Wireless-N in my office, standing right next to a rarely used HP Procurve AP fed via Gig-E directly from our head end router with a 100Mb/s fiber direct connection, I can barely get around 30Mb/s then!

I was completely unaware of that. Where do you find this data on the speedtest site? I believe i have seen many people with even greater speeds then me, but i was able to get that on whatever the stock GB firmware and radios shipped with the phone. That was a typical speed pretty much anywhere i was and even when my service was poor (2 or 3 bars), and i can say for the short time i've lost 4g on this phone it was only for a brief period and that was in what pretty much could be considered a bunker (even then i had full 3g service)
. So i guess i am just lucky in a lighter area than you?? But either way i'd like to get back to that speed!
I've pulled close to 40Mb/s in areas around me so it's more then possible... And that was on the latest firmware.
If you're s-off, you can revert back, just take a look at the firmware thread with ICS and GB firmware combos in the Development section. Until you s-off you're stuck with what you have.

No over 4G
Speed test results can vary depending on the time of day. If I run a test between 6am and 10pm I average 15-20mbps But if I run a test at 2AM I can hit 45-55mbps.(same average results on GB or ICS Firmware) Just sharing what I have learned and that is speeds will depend on the local network load. The more people using it the slower. The less people using it the faster. (Can anybody truly tell a difference after 15 to 20 mbps? I can't.) So I don't think its the phone or firmware. I also think it's just timing and also the degrade in speed is probably cause people are upgrading to 4G phones wich in turn loads the network taking away bandwith that was previously available. But if you get back to GB Firmware and speeds comeback up, let me know. I would be very curious to find out why and would crack open the radios to see what changed.
When I first got my Rezound in January, I got 28M down/14M up consistently all day long. When I did the OTA update it immediately dropped down to 5-10M down/5M up. That's it. I've tried every newer set of radio/firmware files and it doesnt get better at all.

TrickDroid 5.3.0 fixes AT&T LTE signal/speed issues on International based ROM

Just a heads up for the unlucky AT&T HTC One owners that are in particular markets where their LTE speeds and signal are significantly degraded when using International based ROMs - I have verified that the problem has been fixed in the newly released TrickDroid 5.3.0. LTE speeds and signal strength now match the stock AT&T ROM. The signal strength was probably cosmetic, but data speeds are indeed much better.
good to know- i'll re-post this in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2245952
might be of interest there..

Never had a problem with speeds before the release and the "messed up" signal bars wasn't that big of a deal

Good for you. The LTE speed problems on previous International ROMs are well documented on this forum. If you're in a strong signal area, the speeds are fine. If you're in a weaker area, the LTE speeds in the stock ROM were much faster than the previous International ROMs.
edit: I see in your sig that you're a team Venom/TrickDroid beta tester.
Maybe this is a dumb question.
Unlock the bootloader.
Install CWM.
Flash Trickdroid.
Is that correct? Or is there anything else I need to do? I'm coming from Samsung, so I just want to be sure.

There were no problems...
There was a visual display issue. My signal showed 1 or 3 bars. It was always green in my settings, it was never yellow, or absent. I also only had 3 bars when I got a 52mbs down and 28mbs up speedtest while in Austin.
Ya'all just don't know what a visual display issue is.

I had always assumed the signal issue to be cosmetic, but how do you explain the lower data speeds?
Here are my previous comments on the matter I posted in another thread yesterday:
My LTE speeds are consistently lower on International ROMs versus the stock AT&T ROM. I've done quite a bit of testing at various times throughout the day to try to minimize the effects of varying network conditions and such (I've got 2 ROMs that I'll nandroid back and forth between). In areas of strong signal, the LTE speeds are the same between the AT&T and the various 1.29 International ROMs I've tried (ARHD and TrickDroid). However, at my home where I get just an "ok" signal, on the AT&T stock ROM the signal strength is usually 3 bars and my LTE speeds are 10-30 Mb/s. On International ROMs, the signal strength is 1-2 bars (usually 1) and my LTE speeds are almost always under 8 Mb/s. I realize that silly cosmetic signal "bars" are not as good as decibels when discussing signal strength, but using the app Network Signal Info, the signal strength just stays stuck at 85 dBm while connected via LTE, so I don't know what the real signal value is.
I thought there might be a difference in the RIL versions but the AT&T ROM and the International ROMs are all reporting "Qualcomm RIL 1.0" when queried with the getprop command. I checked the APN's and they are the same. I've tried the AT&T stock radio and the radio that came with 1.29.401.13 just for the heck of it and there was no change, then I saw that someone verified on this forum that the radio.img files in these 2 radios were the same and had the same CRC.

I honestly never had any of these, and I've ran 7.0/7.2 of ARHD and I've seen just low bars. My battery was at 10% with 1d 23h time on it, and over 3 hours screen time. I was able to get fine data speeds at home, at work, and downtown Austin. I live on the fringes of austin, about 10-15 miles E of the city, and I work about 5 miles SE of downtown and had signals that were comparable to my One XL. Didn't notice anything switching to ARHD, tbh.

One thing I learned from my HTC Inspire days that seems to have been forgotten around here is that all AT&T markets are not the same. Judging by a couple of posts in this thread, apparently Austin, Springfield and NYC don't have this problem, where as my market (Tulsa) did have the speed problem on International ROMs.
Back when I had my HTC Inspire, running International ROMs would cause my HSPA data speeds to be under 1 MB/s. A lot of other people thought I was crazy because they didn't have the same problem on their Inspires, but a few people did have the problem. After a long thread I created it was finally determined that the "wap.cingular" APN that came on all the international ROMs was the fault, but only in certain markets. In some markets like mine, you had to manually configure a "phone" APN to get full HSPA speeds.
The only reason I brought up the previous paragraph is because apparently a similar situation existed where there was some configuration setting in the HTC One International ROMs that was causing slowdowns in some markets, that apparently got fixed in the new TrickDroid. And history has repeated itself here today, where people come in here saying the problem didn't exist and "ya'all just don't know what a visual display issue is".
I've had no issues with data speeds here in NYC. I get the same speeds on an international ROM as I do on the AT&T ROM. I've been using the pta apn on both.

Noted. Unfortunately that wasn't true in the Tulsa market. Same thing happened on the HTC Inspire two years ago where some markets needed a fix. Unlike the Inspire however, the One fix doesn't seem to be APN related.

Does torxx even claim to have done something to fix the speeds? If he said he did nothing, then I'm guessing it's just placebo.

I wondered why my signal was lower. Hopfully renovate rom does the fixes too.
I personally havent had speed issues w/ international roms,
however I do have some major status bar issues with the new version of trick droid.

Not even wrong! AT&T rom lies!
Just out of curiosity, seems there is a lot of problems with Aroma on this device. I know lots of Samsung ROM's used it, and lots didn't. Is there a reason most the ROM's use Aroma on this device? Or is it just a convenience thing?

Supposedly the troubles with Aroma are common on phones with 1080 displays. Even though the international HTC One has been out for 2 months (and other 1080 phones even longer), the problem hasn't been fixed yet because the main developer of Aroma doesn't have a 1080 phone to troubleshoot and fix the problem. I imagine that the developers are reluctant to go back to the old method since Aroma makes customization of the installation very easy for end users.

Nope, during my very first ROM flash, Aroma locked up immediately when I hit the first onscreen button. I thought maybe I had a corrupt zip file, but after verifying MD5 then I started checking around and noticed that almost everyone was having Aroma issues. I was surprised because I had been flashing Aroma ROMs for a year on my Galaxy phones with no problems, and then I read about the 1080 problem. If the issue really is related to the 1080 resolution, then chances are the S4 folks will be having problems as well. I've tried all the suggested workarounds with inconsistent results. It really comes down to just retrying the ROM installation over and over again until it gets through to the end of the installation without locking up.
