i777 stuck on Rethink Possible - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I know this question was asked, but however the solution's do not work for me. I have google search, XDA searched, and tried things on my own to figure this out and to fix it...but can not. I re-flashed (using Odin) to STOCK ICS - Worked like a charm. Until, one time, I did this again - And Odin shows that it was successful, and I get the Stock boot up screen (Rethink Possible) and it just stays there. I have tried to rethink possible but cant get a solution. I have read somewhere that putting the phone into recovery to do a wipe/data clear - Would solve this issue - but problem is, I cant get into recovery. And yes, I have had the phone completely off, held Volume Down + Power ... I even tried both Volumes + Power = NOTHING. I dont think I ever tried doing this way back when, before I even rooted...but I know for a fact, after I rooted, I was never able to get into CWM by doing the button combos...I always had to reboot into recovery.
Things I have done, was re root with ODIN. Flash back to complete bone stock. I tried flashing Kernels with Odin etc etc, and never did Odin say it failed...but I can not get my phone to pass the Rethink Possible Screen...the closest I got - was a looping boot up screen. But now, its just frozen there, and never moves forward. Any ideas?

My idea is post http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1372 next time. This isn't development. Also the EMMC "superbrick" bug is confirmed to affect the UCLE5 STOCK KERNEL. So I hope that you didn't flash stock UCLE5 with the stock kernel. Read more info here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181. Hopefully you didn't use the odin file from there and if you did and flashed anyways without changing the kernel and wiped data/factory reset you more than likely got the emmc "superbrick" bug.

I had the same exact problem when I flashed back to stock ICS and on first boot got stuck at rethink possible screen. The trick is to go into stock Recovery and wipe data. I hope this works for you.

Lets try and help someone brick a phone if they already haven't. Great Idea.
To the others, yes it is posted in the wrong forum and needs to be moved. That doesn't mean you have to report useless posts to a misplaced thread and continue to fill it with uselessness.

Not to sound rude, because I am not, But I get yelled to "Read" and I guess...that if I get told to, others should too.
I can not get into stock recovery. I put that in my OP

This sounds like whatever you used to root the phone also installed a secondary bootloader for a different device.
You need to provide more detailed information so we can troubleshoot, or...
enter download mode and flash the stock Gingerbread UCKH7 full distribution from the Download Repository that includes bootloaders and param.lfs. Then use the three button method to enter 3e recovery and perform a wipe data/factory reset. Then you can root, flash a custom kernel, and install whatever firmware you want.

You sir, are Jesus. I have been to the links in your signature before, and you helped me out (without knowing you did) and this time, you came through again! I flashed a few things with Odin with no avail, and no recovery still. But I have this little problem with taking "no" or "not going to work" as my answer...So i kept pulling the battery, doing three button combo...FINALLY got into recovery...and I seriously could not be happier right now! I am back to complete bone stock Gingerbread - Thank you

Was hoping I was in the clear...I can get into CWM using button combo, but however, selecting an option doesnt work. It just removes all text, until I push the power button to replace the text. It weird. So if I were to go to reboot system....and use power button to select, everything disappears besides the CWM logo in the background...So i can not flash any roms, etc via CWM - any idea?

[Q] Help - SGH-I777 in boot loop and it can't get out

I'm an admitted noob, but my hope is that somebody here will take pity and be able to shed some light on what I've done and how to fix it.
Here is a general high-level list of what I've done:
1. I attempted to root my phone with SuperOneClick (I think 2.3.3)
2. It hung one Step #7 (as I recall) for about 10 minutes.
3. I disconnected USB cable and reset the phone - it wouldn't boot
4. Started researching, discovered Recovery Mode, selected reset to factory.
5. Reset appeared successful, but then phone went into reboot loop.
6. Tried to access Recovery Mode again, but this time it came to different screen, saying "Deleting cryption meta data".
7. Tried flashing several times with odin and stock PDA's suggested in this forum.
8. Same behavior, so flashed CWM 4.0.0.2 (unfortunately it was for I9100)
9. Flashed new CWM 5.0.2.3
10. When I enter Recovery mode now and I select the wipe data/factory reset option, it just goes to a hat icon with a circular arrow and stays there.
Like I said, I'm new here and have already given up hope on recovering any useful data on my phone. I just want to get it working again so I don't have to buy a new one.
Thanks in advance!
In you item #10, that's a common mistake. The 5.0.2.3 version does not use the power button to select. Use the home softkey to select and the back softkey to go back.
Try to wipe data/factory reset again from this version of CWM Recovery, and then try flashing the one-click downloader return to stock in the "Return to the store or for warranty replacement" thread stickied in general.
Post your results back here and I'll try to keep an eye out to help, but I won't be on the computer every minute.

This guy is right. The power button is the menu/logo button in that version. The newer version changes that mapping though.
You'll likely need to flash the return to stock image. One of them is already prerooted, too!

Thanks so much for your quick reply and help. I followed the instructions you outlined and all went as outlined. Upon final reboot I'm back at Stage 6 in my original post. The original Samsung logo is back (which is a relief), but so is the incessant rebooting and upon trying to enter Recover Mode, I get the Deleting cryption meta data message and then more reboot loop.
Looking forward to your next suggestion(s) and a little sleep.
Oh, by the way, the wipe data/factory reset within CWM appeared to run properly but made no apparent change.

Tried to answer you this morning, but didn't hit the submit button until a few minutes after 8:00. Let me see if I can do it again.
You did a factory reset and then installed the stock firmware. Now try a factory reset again to see if that will clear the bootloop.
If that does not do it, then you may need to replace another part of the system. We need to know exactly what you flashed for the I9100 while you were trying to fix the original problem (point 8 in your list.) So far, you have flashed everything in the stock UCKH7 firmware except the bootloaders and the param.lfs. You may need to flash param.lfs next to see if that will do it. Is there any chance that what you flashed for the I9100 contained bootloaders?
...........
By the way, having Super OneClick hang on step #6 is a known issue, and the solution is posted in the Super OneClick thread OP as well as in the Library sticky thread in the development section of the I777 forum. If you had been better informed, you could have avoided this problem.

First, you're a true gentleman (assuming 'creepyncrawly' to be male) for sticking with me on this issue - Thanks!
To address your first point, I could't do a factory reset after this most recent flash because that dialog doesn't exist any longer. All I get is the "Deleting cryption meta data" message when I try to enter recover mode.
As for the I9100 flash, I used CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEU_KE7-v4.0-CWM4 first which took me to 4.0.0.2 and then realizing what I'd done, flashed with SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3 which took me to 5.0.2.3, though the I9100 logo still showed during boot.
Thanks again for your help. I will "flash at will" whatever you suggest as at least I feel I'm making progress now.

The CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEU_KE7-v4.0-CWM4.tar contains only the kernel zImage, so it doesn't flash any of the wrong bootloaders or param.lfs, so no clue there.
However, the message "deleting cryption meta data" seems to be associated with the lfs, so I would suggest that you try flashing just the UCKH7 param.lfs file using Odin3. Go to the Download Repository where you will find the Odin3 flashable tar of the UCKH7 param.lfs.

I successfully flashed the I777 param.lfs from your download repository. Unfortunately, with the same results. I still get the boot loop and when trying to access recover mode I get "Deleting Cryption Meta Data".
Would you suggest I try flashing the secondary boot loader or .pit files?

Well, I had a little extra time tonight so I tried a couple more things after my last post. I went back to the Download Repository and got the secondary boot loader (i777 UCKH7 sbl), flashed with that. No change. Then I got the full set of binaries (I777UCKH7-CL503881-Full), flashed that, and still no change. I think I've tried everything except the .pit and that appears the most risky so I'll await further instruction before trying that.
Am I running out of options at this point?
I had a similiar problem with the deleting meta cache data. I couldn't get it back to working order although I didn't flash pit either. Luckily mine was within 30 days so I gave up and returned for a new one.
Hopefully this deleting meta cache thing can be figured out to see what the cause is. Mine happened from a working rom browsing the web, not from flashing. So I believe it was from aftermarket charger creating some hardware problems to my phone, but not sure what it could have messed up.
If ya can't exchange yours, I hope you figure it out.

I have always understood that if a phone will boot in any way, or show any sign of life, then it can be recovered. Since you can still get into download mode, you should be able to recover your phone. However, since I am not an Android developer, and I don't really understand the low level workings of the phone, I can't offer any more suggestions myself.
You have flashed the complete I777UCKH7 software package including bootloaders and param.lfs, which also rebuilds the csc, so I don't know what is causing the bootloop.
You need to seek the help of someone more experienced. I have two people on xda in mind who specialize in recovering hard bricked phones, and both have a better understanding of the low level workings of the phone.
Adam Outler is a fantastic hardware level developer who published the unbrickable mod for the Galaxy S series of phones, and is currently moving into the Galaxy S II phones. I have heard that he wants an I777 to work on to try to make the unbrickable mod for our phone. He would probably not charge anything since he is using the phone to learn how to do it, but he might keep the phone for a while.
Connexion2005 of Mobile Tech Videos offers hard brick recovery on the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II series of phones. He also has a very good understanding of the low level functions of the phone.
If it was my phone, I would be contacting these two to see if I could get any guidance about how to recover the phone, probably Adam Outler first. I would try to pm them and I would try to get phone numbers and talk with them in person.
You are not hard bricked. And about the pit, that re-partitions the phone. But I don't have enough experience to know if partitioning could cause the problem you are experiencing.
Good luck moving forward.
Any chance flashing a ROM would do the trick...like Unnamed or SHOstock? Just thinking that maybe he's flashed so many things nothing is playing nice anymore. Just a thought, not necessarily a suggestion. ;-)
Also, how long are you letting it sit in boot loop now? It might be taking a while to rebuild everything...?

So, had you rooted and put a custom rom on prior to yours going south, or was it completely stock? What made you think it was related to the aftermarket charger?

Thanks for your thoughts. I had a similar thought last night and so let it sit through the night rebooting. Sure enough, when I checked it (roughly 8 hours) this morning, it was nice and warm, but still rebooting away.

I figured it was the charger because it was connected when it happened. Was driving home from a Christmas vacation, with maps navigation going, stopped at a rest stop surfing the web. Also on another thread that I read that had a similiar problem, they too thought it was the charger.
And no it was not stock, running unnamed at the time, (though I doubt that is the cause). Like yours I think, I could flash from cwm without success. Wasn't until I flashed stock with stock recovery that I got the deleting meta cache or whatever it is.

Any luck so far? I think I'm having the same issues. Although I can flash the stock rom, then a CWM .tar file and get into recovery. But no matter what I do, after boot, the phone starts boot looping.
You can see my thread in the Q&A section.

Hi, did anybody tried this solution??? I'm having the same issue, even tried to contact JTAG unbrick service but these guys told me I'm having a emmc chip failure.

[Q] Bricked Phone?

Ill try to give all relevant information i can...
I had a rooted phone running a custom ICS rom. The phone charging port started acting up and finally gave out. I am still under warranty so I ran triangle away and reset flash counter with no issues. I then downloaded the stock firmware from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313659 . I used mobile odin pro to flash the firmware and made sure to untick the root option. My phone went through the motions and said it was successful. It then rebooted straight into CWM in which i wiped the data thinking the phone would boot up after. This means i deleted the stock firmware or any other firmware on device. I rebooted and now the phone keeps booting straight into CWM and wont boot into android. I have no use of USB to put any files on the phone and I'm not sure I could access filesystem from a PC from CWM anyways. What are my options, if any? My only solution would be to do a self repair on the USB port to try to put new firmware on the phone.
Do you have stock 3e recovery or custom?
If you deleted all your rom zips from your SD card and your USB port wont connect to the PC then find an external card would be your best bet.
Many suggest cleaning the USB port to get it working.

it says cwm-based recovery v5.5.0.4 at the top.
THANK YOU for suggesting getting an external SD! That never crossed my mind! Any further instructions on what to flash next would be appreciated. I need it completely stock to get warranty. Also will flashing stock through CWM give me another flash count??? Will i have to flash another ICS rom to use triangle away and kind of start over?
I tried cleaning the USB port. Its broken.
Which file exactly did you flash in MobileOdin?
Check if the counter is gone, if it is then just flash a GB rom (UnNamed or ShoStock) then follow this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1691659
If not then yea, just grab ICS rom, do TriangleAway check the counter, then return to stock using the same guide.
The UCKH7 one-click downloader from the thread you referenced contains the stock zImage, so since you still have cwm recovery instead of 3e recovery, that flash did not occur, or you selected the wrong file. Mobile Odin will recognize and flash from one-click downloader .exe files.

With the phone off, boot into download mode by holding vol+ and vol- while plugging in your usb cable connected to your computer.
ok so i followed instructions. flashed an ICS rom and made sure the flash counter was at 0. I then flashed the file from the link you provided in mobile odin and it seemed to work ok. It started to boot and i saw the AT&T boot screen and thought i was in the clear... but not it keeps looping that AT&T boot screen endlessly. Not quite sure what to do next. Is phone safe for warranty possibly?
edit: just held volume and power buttons and got into 3e recovery which ive never seen before. How can i get this thing back to stock from here? : ( Also cant seem to access external storage from here.

I had an ICS custom rom, did triangle away to reset flash count. then did this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1691659 since i have no usb port. Seemed to work, but im stuck on att boot loop. 3e recovery is popping up when buttons are held and its asking for a password to do a data wipe. Also cannot seem to access external storage from there. That is basically where im at.
And why would your phone be asking for a password to wipe data in stock recovery? U or someone else had to have installed software like an anti theft protection or an antivirus that came with anti theft protection.

The presence of 3e recovery indicates that the flash to UCKH7 was successful, in that the parts got flashed to the phone. You may be able to get the phone to boot once you can get into 3e recovery and perform a wipe data/factory reset. With the password problem, I have read in several threads that if you keep trying and failing to enter the password, or enter wrong password each time, eventually the software is written to bypass the password protection and let you in, so just keep putting in the wrong password, I think three or four times.
I did not download the UCKH7.tar that LilChris provides, but I assume it has the stock UCKH7 distribution. Even if it has bootloaders and param.lfs, which I don't know, Mobile Odin will not flash those anyway, even if present. So once you get into 3e recovery and wipe data/factory reset, let us know your results.

3e is stock recovery which comes with the phone, so far your in the right track.
Make sure to check your build and kernel in about phone, that's mainly what the AT&T techs check when they pull out the paper. (I returned mine once for USB defect)
Remember to wipe/format your internal SD card before returning it.

i777 AT&T - Boots OK but can't get into recovery

// edit // - just noticed I posted this in the i9100 thread, I'm sorry if someone can move this please.
Ok, so I rooted my Galaxy s2 last night and it went well, except I put a 9100 on it and my search/back button stopped working with any ROM i put on it. So after trying 20 different roms I went back to a stock ROM I downloaded.
Everything works well, and now i'm on a rooted kernel, except I cannot get into recovery/download mode by doing the 'button dance' anymore. The only way for me to get into recovery mode is to boot my phone up, use the widget "reboot widget root" to boot into recovery/download. Lets say I soft brick my phone installing something, I won't be able to boot into recovery since the OS isn't booting.
Any advice?
Thank you
I suggest you do a complete wipe for your phone and reformat the internal sdcard to get rid of any issues from flashing roms that were not suitable and then reflash with your preferred rom.
Since you have basically reset your phone everything should work properly now.
Isn't there another forum for your device? This thread is only for the international (unbranded) version, GT-I9100. Ask there and you'll be able to get better responses.

You lost the buttons because the rom you flashed contained the secondary bootloader for the I9100, which has different button combos. There are a couple of paths you can take. You can flash back to stock including bootloaders, and start over. Or you can first flash the I777 secondary bootloader using Odin, which will fix the button combos, and then use CLockworkMod Recovery to flash an I777 kernel. You might have to hell raise that rom. At that point you should be fixed.
You can get the files you need from the Download Repository, and the kernel from the development section. See the link in my Signature.

Ok, so it's been a while since I posted this thread. Since then, I've gathered the courage to attempt a re-flash. I've reflashed using ODIN and a different bootloader. Got that all taken care of and found myself a good stable copy of jellybam with CM10. Been using that for a while pretty successfully other then the battery life being sucked out and a couple random reboots.
Got rid of the SGS2 today and got myself an SGS3

You might've had the stock from the 9100 still in your phone so you shoot clear cache, and factory reset your phone and then flash the stock ROM again. Hope this helps.

Past see that post right above yours? Yeah you know the one you would've had to read before you even posted this? That's be the one where he says he got rid of his sgs2. So unless he can mentally manipulate it via brain power, he won't need this advice. But thanks for playing!

[Q] Need help fixing self inflicted boot failure updating supersu.

Not paying attention while updating supersu has led to my s2(i777) not being usable. Updated binary selecting wrong option and and phone would not boot past the splash screen. At this point I used creepyncrawly's I777UCKH7-CL5038881-No-Bl.exe to return to factory settings. Was able to do this using battery pulls to turn off and on and enter download mode. Appeared all was going to work but now phone will not boot past initial setup screen. Can get into recovery but unable to enter selection as power button not working at this point even though I use it to get into factory recovery. About to flash stock sbl.tar (downloaded from repository) using Odin but decided I should probably get some feedback first.Phone was running Semi_v18 and Siyah 3.3.3d and working well B/4 I messed things up.
I have no idea what gets changed or corrupted when you have a problem updating supersu. Maybe you could go to chainfire's supersu thread and see if you can get an idea what it might be.
Your thinking may be right though, because the sbl seems to be the place that controls power and volume button actions.

Thanks Creepy, been to the other thread nothing helpful from reading responses to others posting wih the same problem. I'm just going to flash sbl.tar with Odin unless you think it may just cause a bigger problem.
It should be no problem to flash it as long as the flash doesn't get interrupted. If the sbl is not damaged, it won't do any harm to re-flash it.

Just wanted to let you know what happened with S2. Took a long shot and called at&t cs.
After 2 calls to at&t and 2 to Samsung tech support I got lucky on the third cal to at&t and the rep set up a
free appointment at a nearby device support center. Guy there said all he could do was to wipe the phone and
install ICS 4.0.4. Phone works now but seems the power button stopped working at the same time I messed up the update.
Need a new power button, rom and a kernel with cwmr and I will be set.

[HELP]Bootloops (Solved) and won't go into Recovery Mode (Unsolved Yet)

Update: So, the bootloop problem is now solved, thanks to @MistahBungle guiding me at Troubleshoot a failed Odin flash and did the Another option in i9100 step. But, access to Recovery Mode is still unsolved... So here's the phone problem's history:
Okay. Long-story short, after I downgraded-flashed my friend's S2 to Stock GB (which is I think a corrupted file, my bad) via Mobile Odin, the phone starts to bootloop. Here are the factors:
1. Main problem is the phone won't go Recovery Mode. (Vol UP + Power only leads to a reboot).
▬ Thinking it's a kernel issue, I flashed a Stock JB Firmware XWMS1 via Odin (which is a success), then flashed Philz Kernel for XWMS1 (flashable via Odin, which also is a success). But sadly, the phone still won't go to Recovery Mode.
▬ Before I flashed the GB, to ensure the phone can go to Recovery, I tested the Volume keys, and they are working, so a faulty/broken Volume UP key is excluded in reasoning.
2. I can access Download Mode, can successfully flash stock firmwares via Odin (tried officials 4.0.3/2.3.x/4.1.2), but the result are the same = Bootloops and cannot access Recovery Mode, again. Each and every one of them.
What I think: Since it's a bad firmware, I think wiping system/data/cache/boot.img will do the trick, but I can't access Recovery Mode for it. Is there a possible procedure like via Odin? Like flashing some files to wipe those filesystems and such?
Thanks for noticing, and a much of a thanks for helping! :good:
Flash the 3 part firmware linked in Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General which will wipe the phone & hopefully get rid of whatever is causing the problem. From there, re-root your phone & restore nandroid or reinstall custom rom/kernel/whatever.

I guess that's my last bet. How does that work? Just curious.
As it's a 3 part firmware, the separate CSC wipes the phone. And as I said, hopefully this gets rid of whatever is causing the problem. Either that will fix it, or something really small/obvious is being missed here, which can be very very difficult for other people to figure out from the other side of the world (not there watching you/etc, etc).
If you can't get a successful flash, go through the troubleshooting stuff in Hopper's thread until you do.

OK... The good news is the S2 is now usable (currently using), and a big thanks for you to that!
But the bad news is Recovery Mode is still unaccessible. When I do the Volume UP + Power, it just reboots.
Is it related to Bootloader? Or something?

Use some other third party applications for booting into recovery move
( just to make sure your keys are faulty or not)

Volume Keys are working fine. I can volume up and down the sounds and some media stuff. It's just that there's some kind of a problem "blocking" me to access Recovery Mode. It always ends to the Boot Logo then Reboot when I do the Volume UP + Power combo.
As of now, I cannot do the "Other Third Party Applications" thing, cause it's not rooted (Stock Firmware XXLSJ freshly squeezed by Odin). And I can't root it cause I can't access the Recovery Mode, so... Yeah...
I was thinking of getting a Philz Kernel (Odin Flashable) for the ROM, but it will trigger the accursed "Yellow Triangle", which I'm trying my best to avoid. So, any root procedure that doesn't require me to access Recovery Mode is pretty much a helpful info for me as of now... Do you know such a thing like that?

You can flash tar version of philz via Odin.
Read philz thread.
