I've just downloaded the update through UpdateMe and flashed it. It recognised that it was upgrading and upgraded fine without a full wipe.

If you're simply updating an existing ROM or coming from a ROM with the same build base, all you need to do is flash it and clear cache partition and wipe dalvik cache.

Whenever I install and ICS ROM it seems like it installs fine but then it just its at a black screen whenever I try to boot up. I'm pretty sure I'm following instructions right but I have no idea what's causing thus problem. Just ask if you need additional information.

Yeah, I did a factory reset, wiped cache partition, dalvik cache, and formatted system

do not use safestrap, this gains you lots of bugs and flash failures... it's quite not very 'safe' i think... use RAZRbootstrap instead...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347767
works perfect for me.
edit: if you're NOT on 2.3.6 the ics ota will NOT work! it's based on 2.3.6's kernel version...

Make sure you are on stock 2.3.6
If you are not on 2.3.6 then you will have to upgrade first and reroot before you can install any ICS ROM.
By the way, which ROM are you trying to install?

You don't need to wipe before flashing a newer version of a rom I am general unless the dev says a wipe is needed. So no wipe for you

Yes, if coming from a GB based rom you should wipe date/factory reset.
Is there any reason why you cant? All you need to do is backup apps/app data with Titanium Backup and then restore once you have fresh rom.

1. Yeah full wipe is recommended if you are downgrading or upgrading to another Android version.
2. If you don't do full wipe there are chances that your CM9 will not bee stable, freezes and lockups here and there

What about an ICS stock rom? that's the one I'm using right now . If I install the CM rom, and if I want to downgrade to the stock rom again, could I do that? Thank you for answering.

If you are moving from stock to Aosp Roms and vice versa, you have to do full wipe

Yes, you would just flash the stock ROM using Odin, and that would "unroot" your handset in the process.
If you try to switch from stock to a custom ROM, or between different custom ROMs without wiping your data, you can soft or hard-brick your handset. It's not worth the risk.

softbrick wile frashing android 4.2.2

i was running cm10.1 (4.2.1) and it was going well but i recently uptated to the latest nightly version cm10.1(4.2.2) dint like it as it was crashing frequently so i flashed cm10.1 20130213 and now imm stuk at cyanogenmod logo i have no backups nothin
is there anything i can do?
plz help!!
Boot into recovery, wipe cache, factory reset and install the 13022013 nightly update (last 4.2.1 rom and gapps). It should boot up.

thanx a lot it worked!
Had same issue.
Does this mean that if you want to revert to an older nightly you can't use the ROM built in update functionality ?

If you do that you will likely bootloop as there will be file residues from the previous newer nightly. So it is better to flash the older nightly with recovery but you have to wipe before flashing.

Correct and safest way to update rom?

Hi there. I am currently running Liquidsmooth Rom on my i9300 and I wanted to update it to the latest version 2.9. I had a look through and couldn't find a clear way on how to flash the update. If any experienced flashers could guide me to how I should go to update my rom it'll be much, much appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.

First of all you should always make a backup in case something goes wrong...usually only you should do is download the rom to your phone, reboot in to recovery, wipe cache, in advanced..wipe dalvik, then just go in install zip from sd card, find downloaded rom and install it, then reboot and everything should be fine
if it's not, factory reset
Backup first in recovery then flash in cwm..
