external SD not detected - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
after my previousl bootloop issue (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31996643#post31996643) my phone will not see sd cards, I have tried two cards, both of which were fine before.
In CWM i get error E: can't mount /sdcard/
when booted in settings -> storage I have nothing under external storage and mount SD card is greyed out.
I fixed bootloop by flashing back to stock then wiping cashe, davik and factory reset. I have since tried kies update and reroot.
Is there anything else I can do or have i destroyed the SD card slot?

Format FATG32 and test in a Windows PC .
jje

still nothing.
both my 32 and 8 gb cards read fine in windows but phone ignores them

is formatting your card in windows an option?
I had a similar issue, the phone can't detect my card, but it was fine on my PC. I formatted it and it's fine now.

reformat does not help, also tried to flash Siyah kernal but still no joy.

I have now tried restoring my most recent cm Nandroid in which everything worked and sd still won't mount. I am assuming it's a hardware issue.
Anyone know if it's an expensive repair?
Is there any way to tell if it's the SD tray or main board that's died?

[Q] Formatted internal sd to ntfs

By pure accident I formatted the internal sd card on my atrix to ntfs. The problem is I cant seem to mount it in order to format it back to fat32. Any ideas?
How do you 'accidently' format the internal SD to ntfs???
How did I 'accidentally' format the internal sd card. Had an external sd card in, which for some reason was named to mot as well. Wasn't paying to much attention and wanted to format the external one to ntfs but must have clicked on the internal one.
That sucks d00d. If it was the external card - you could use a card reader and your PC to reformat.... Idk what to tell ya about the internal.... Maybe someone who's done this and fixed it could chip in with some info here? I did a quick search on it, and didnt turn up with anything... Sorry I can't help ya man.
Connect your phone to your PC, and format the card to fat32 the same way you did it to NTFS.

I tried to do that, but the problem is it wont mount. It says sd card damaged you may have to reformat it. But when I click that it says "sd card has been removed"
Try using CWM recovery to format the internal sd card.

Try formatting sd-ext or internal storage rather than /sdcard. Don't format anything like /osh, /data, /system, /cache etc.

Go to your device forum. People there are more likely to know and help you on how to solve your problem. The solution I will give is a Atrix only solution. I believe samsung has a software of the name "odin" but you have to check with the people in your phone forum.

Maybe you can try flashing a SBF. Make sure you know what you are doing, and flash the full one, some SBF leaves your internal SD untouched.

[Q] Help needed! Can not mount internal or exteral sd after ics flashed

I flashed few different ics roms, but none of them could recognize internal or external sd card, when I use file expert, it shows me sd card in 0, and I even could not open storage option in settings, it just kicked me back to the home screen. When I flashed back to 2.3.6 roms, both internal and external sd card came back. Is there anyone else has this strange problem too, and how to fix it?
Great appreciated if someone can give a little bit help!
Looks I am the only one has this problem, anyone know how to fix this?
Did you wipe when flashing?
Have you tried to format your internal storage in recovery?
May be you did something wrong? On 3 different roms have same issue, strange. After install new rom, when phone will boot for first time, go back in recovery do a factory reset. Also I suggest you to go in recovery and format you storage

[Q] Unable to write to ums lunfile(no such file or directory) can anybody help ?

Hello guys.
I want your help! I don't know if the problem is from my card or from my recovery.
I've connected my SD-card to my computer in order to make back-up for my data(I think that was a little premonition).
After that I wanted to copy a new ROM to the card in order to flash it, but the speed was too slow. So I've enter into Recovery in order to copy there the ROM(mount the card as USB). Then, I've noticed that the speed was very low so I've decided to format the SD.
I've put into the card reader of my laptop and made a full format of the card(FAT32).
Last stap, I've inserted the card into my phone and tried to Mount as USB, but, than appeared the big error:
"Unable to write to ums lunfile(no such file or directory)!"
After that I've tried to repartion the card..but only the same message appeared.
I've to mention that my ROM(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23789395#post23789395) is working fine!

I've tried that too. No chance. I've format the card with http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html. It can see all the partitions from SD card. On that card I had an ext4 partition(from my old HTC Desire). After that, in phone I can see the card(both Android and Recovery) but can't copy anything on it.

Try formating the card threw the sd options in SD/ storage setting. Meaning unmount the sd. Then format the sd. When its complete it should remount the sd automatically. Also you should try reflashing your recovery. Also what rom and kernel are you using??

[Q] SD takes 10 mins to mount?

Yesterday, after having no problems at all with my SD card, I rebooted my phone and it took 10 mins to mount. It's been taking just as long since then.
As 90% of my apps and everything else is on my SD card, this is a problem.
Could it be a problem with my SD card or something else?
Thanks.
If you didn't unmount the sdcard correctly the next time you boot your phone a file system check is done and this may take some time, especially when you have a big / slow card. If you think your card has some problems try to mount it on a pc and do a file system check manually.

Just backup all the data(copy and paste everything into a computer) and format the memory card to remove any faulty blocks, then restore data.
Worked once for my trusty old Galaxy Y.

I've never taken the SD card out of my phone and it happens every time I turn on my phone. I will try a manual check if formatting it doesn't work

[Q] Ext SD Card Issues

Wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing the same issue I am.
Was using my phone and my Samsung 64GB class 10 Micro Sdcard "ejected" although it was still in the phone. It had been working fine for a week. I manually ejected and placed it back in but it will not read. I get the "Scanning/Preparing SD card" Message but it always says unavailable. Thinking that my card crapped out on my, I put a brand new Kingston class 10 64 GB sd card but experiencing the same results. Oddly enough, I have an old Class 10 Transcend 8GB card that will read. I am running the stock OS-Unlocked Boot/Rooted/S-off. Only mods I have done are flashing the released HTC kernel that is R/W. (Dont know if I need to reflash the one that came with the phone), and flashed the SD card write fix posted in this thread :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2700310
Anyone know where I can get the stock ATT kernel that may have the correct drivers for ext sd? Any suggestions?

Hey, thanks for the reply.
I have a SD card reader on my laptop and it recognized the card just fine but if I put the card in the phone and plug in the phone to computer via USB, it will NOT recognize/see the card.
Im pretty sure it is a software issue. Does anyone have access or a link to the stock ATT kernel/boot.img?? I'd like to troubleshoot but forgot to make a back up before I flashed the R/W kernel released here. Thanks.
Doesnt matter if the sdcard reader sees it fine in windows, your more than likely going from windows to android, try what I suggested. If the card is not formatted @fat32 it will not be read in phone...

Maybe I forgot to mention it but both cards are FAT32 formatted. Also, the samsung card was working just fine for a week before these issues started happening.
Im still searching for the stock att kernel.
Ok did you reformat and try them again?

Went to try and reformat them again and am getting some weird results.
If i plug them directly into the computer with an adapter and use SDFormat to format them, then the M8 will read the cards? However, it only reads half the amount of memory (30gb) and I do not have an option within SDFormat to change the size. Since M8 now reads the card, I went to format it within the storage settings and once that completes, it no longer recognizes the card...?? Not sure how that is possible unless the phone is reformatting the card to a format it does not recognize..?
Use sdcard reader on laptop format fat32,set it to default size...it varies on different cards, 4 kb 8kb 16kb etc...

Thanks for the continued assistance. I have done this but still only have Half of the advertised memory. When I first installed it out of the box, it worked and showed full memory (62gb). Also, the default windows formatting tool will render the card unreadable by the M8 so im using the program called SDFormatter. Seems like I'm running in circles so I guess I'll just deal with half the memory for now. At least it works.

Use above instructions to remove all partitions from sd card. Insert into phone it will prompt you about it being damaged and ask if you want to format it. Answer yes.
If you still continue to have issues, it is most likely a hardware issue.

Thank you guys for the help!
I tried using the above fix (disk part) but it didnt even recognize the device. L0ng story short. I was able to use BOOTICE to reformat my KINGSTON Sd card to 60 GB but my samsung only reads 30 (even though it is advertised as 64) I read that when you reformat some Samsung cards, there is a protected area that most generic formatting utilities can overwrite and render the card to half capacity. Not sure if that's the case but oh well. Got it the other card to work. Thanks so much guys! Now if I can figure out why the phone isn't turning on now.....
