[Q] Strange kernel!? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I just have updated my SGS 2 to version 4.0.4. It's very nice but now i wanted to root my phone again as always.
Normally, i would use the software of Chainfire (thanks!) but i have an strange kernel version or i do not recognize it...
Some information on this:
android-version:
4.0.4
baseband version:
I9100XXLQ6
Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip

Thank you
Hi,
I have read the warning but all is working well. I do not want to be disrespecful but i'm only using the "root" function of the software. So, i'm not messing around with mods and other stuff.
I do run andriod 4.0.4 (official) and it is working fine (I even reset it to its factory defaulls using the three buttons (power-home-volumeup buttons)). Except for one thing but i think i need to start a new thread for this. My camera (both photo's and film) do not work (also youtube).
In anyway, thank you for the warning. If i really need to downgrade my phone, please tell me.

Flash Siyah kernel. It works on 4.0.4 without any problems.

[Q] Which kernel do i have? Samsung Galaxy s2

Hi,
I watched the noob video when registering, heard that you should ask in the thread relating to your issue, well i wasn't allowed as a noob to post in that thread because i had below 10 posts, which makes the video telling me to do that stupid.
Anyway, i wanted to root my Samsung Galaxy S2 ( this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 )
But i don't understand which kernel to download for my phone cause non of them match my kernel when i look in my phone.
This is the kernel my phone has : [email protected] #2
Which kernel root package do i need to download? Is this KE2, KE7, KE8 or KF1??
I have no idea, i'm very confused.
(Reason i want to root is to mount smb shares with cifsmanager, and only that.)
I'm realizing my version is XWKDG which no one else on the entire internet has, this is probably because i turned in my phone for repair just after 2 days after recieving it due to some technical errors, i'm guessing they gave me some firmware no one else has?
Can i just use the KE2 and root with that or the XWKDD? Honestly, try google XWKDG and you'll find nothing. Everyone who is aksing about it is me, it feels lonely.
Check your link again, there is a Kernel that matches your slightly, the: XWKDG1
Hi, Im noob and I have similar problem.
I have bought 8 days old, second hand galaxy s 2 that is rooted and I want to unroot it. Problem is I dont know which cf root to use (there are 3 diferent codes XXKE7, XWKDD, XWKF3). And also which is the stock/original ROM???
Here is the info
Baseband: I9100XXKE7
Kernel ver: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected] 103 #2
Build num:Gingerbread.XWKF3
Thanx
u should look I9100 in ur kernel ver so urs is XWKDD
Thank you, thank you, thank you...
I am still trying to find the thank you button...
Can someone explain more about kernel? What will happen if I flash a Rom with different Kernel than the one on my phone?
Also Can i flash a different kernel, or i should only look for ROMS that have my kernel only.
I have been looking for weeks over the forum but i couldn't find a helpful explainaition for Kernels.
Thank you. i know there are many experts on this forum that can help us.
I need a hand as well please. I am new to all of this but I have read quite a bit so far on rooting my GS2. The issue I am having is that my when I go to
settings > about phone > kernel version it only reads 2.6.35.7 There is nothing after that to denote which CF-root I need to be using. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Model Number : SAMSUNG-SGH_I777
Andriod Version : 2.3.6
Baseband Version : I777UCKK6
Kernel Version : 2.6.35.7
Build Number : GINGERBREAD.UCKK6

Meatness: I had the same issue. If you install "cpu spy" (find it on the Market), it gives you more information about your CPU, including the full kernel information.
Hope that helps!

You'd probably be slaughtered alive for posting this question. This is xda, mate. Search, read and try before posting questions. And even if you do have to post a question, find the correct thread for doing so.
Since you asked, look through this thread for all your rooting requirements. Me and probably a million others like you have read that and then managed to root their phones following the steps mentioned there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Dont forget to thank the contributor.
Yours being 4.0.4 theres a problem with an EMMC bug bricking the phone. again, read the forums thoroughly before going ahead.
Just flash a pre-rooted kernel.
I guess there is a thread discussing about rooting.

-You are running stock 4.0.4 ROM which it's known to have brick bug on it's kernel.
-after rooting, DO NOT factory reset/data or restore any backup without changing your kernel to custom one. Siyah, Dorimanx, Dream, and Speedmod kernels are known to be safe.

I have the same setup as you so I think you can look into my thread which i started yesterday and Jokesy took the time and answered all my questions there including linking to a guide (thank you Jokesy, fantastic). I did not use Odin, but i used CWM Recovery Touch.
After following Jokesy link i rooted my phone, i installed the latest siyah S2 kernel (no beta), i also installed Titanium backup and purchased the PRO key. After that i followed an external link of services and programs that i could safely freeze/delete.
It shall be said that i have been using SGS2 since last spring/summer and this was my first time modifying anything with the phone.
Here is my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1841641
Frank
For simplest root just use method 1 from 1st guide in my signature. No CF-Root, no CWM needed. Just copy one file to external SD card and update from stock recovery.
- Thanks for the contributions... - there's a lot to take in -
- This 'Bricking Bug' is something of a concern... - so I'll be doing some more reading before I choose whether to proceed with rooting my SGS2 -
- Hopefully things will be simpler with the Nexus 7... -
- Understanding the various versions, terminology & methods etc. is giving me something of a head-ache today -
- But thanks again... -

different basband?
Hello devs,
I ran into a problem few hours ago and I am trying to work my way around and through it. I honestly did, I have already lost patience and feel like quitting life itself. I wiped my phone, installed a different BOOTLOADER, different MODEM, different CODE and different CSC. I did all this to install a new ROM, I didn't like the changes so I went for my backup and restored it. Everything was successful, except that the Baseband version hasn't changed at all.
What is a baseband? Does it matter if I installed a different one (it is supposed to be XXLPS-I9100)?
Thanks
Baseband and modem are pretty much the same thing mate. You don't need to have a particular one. If you find your signal isn't as good as it should/used to be, you can change your baseband at a later stage. It doesn't matter if you stick to the one you have. It won't spring up at night and chop your phone into two bits

Hey i have a problem my samsung galaxy s2 is an indian version 4.0.4 and its baseband version is I9100 DDLPB so its ok to root it with another baseband verison?

[Q] Brand new S2. After flash: errors...

I already posted in the wrong place one... I hope this is the right place.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I have a problem with my S2 after flashing to new firmware. This is the story:
- I purchased a S2. Everything worked fine. This was the data before I did something I shouldn’t have done:
PDA: I9100XWLQ2
PHONE: I9100XXLQ6
CSC: I9100DBTLPO
Sales code: DBT (only)
Android 4.0.4
Baseband version: I9100XXLQ6
Kernel version
3.0.15-1157945
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT Fri Oct 26 16:17:36 KST
2012
Build number: IMM76D.XWLQ2
Kies worked fine (updated to the above).
- The only problem is that the firmware was DBT (German). The UI was in English but some applications were German. Nothing against Germany but I’m UK based.
- I decided to update to a new version using Odin, so I flashed:
I9100XWLPT_I9100XXLQ6_I9100XEULPA
This is where all the problems started:
Every time I boot I got a message saying the process android.(...).acore stopped
Clearing contacts cache/data did not address the problem
I read in this thread that this was due to instability of LP9 and it was advisable to use LP8.
- Flashed using Odin
Kernel_I9100XWLP8.tar.md5
I9100XWLPT_I9100XXLQ6_I9100XEULPA
- Now I have UK applications (which is good) but:
a) Every time I boot I get the message "Unfortunately, LogsProvider has stopped"
Clearing contacts cache/data doesn’t help.
b) When I try to use the phone (e.g. dial a number) I got a black screen for a minute or so and then the LogsProvider message. After that the phone application closes.
c) Kies stopped working with the message:
Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies
Current firmware version: PDA:LPT / PHONE:LQ6 / CSC:LPA (DBT)
- Flashed I9100XWLPT_I9100XXLQ6_I9100XEULPA_HOME
Same problems
Now internal data is:
Android 4.0.4
Baseband version: I9100XXLQ6
Kernel version
3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 27 18:08:15 KST
2012
Build number: IMM76D.XWLPT
In ideal world I would like to have an UK, unbranded, S2 and use Kies for future updates. Having said that, considering that the phone is almost dead any suggestion to bring the S2 back to life would be great.
I’m a little bit desperate... help... please
Thanks
~sf
P.S. I did search and read post, guides, notes, comments and info. I am not sure I understood all of it but I did try - I promise.
Well....why don't you just flash an unbranded stock ROM then? You could always update it via kies or OTA.
Should get 4.0.3 tho, dancing with 4.0.4's kernel might brick your device.
what you mean by "bring back to life", It is still working right?

This was the plan:
- Install an unbranded version
- Update via Kies
I didn't work
Do you have any suggestion for a UK-unbranded fimware version (4.0.3) that should work. My understanding is that it should be
a) for GT-I9100 (obviously)
b) XEU version (aka UK)
c) Android 4.0.3
Apart from that, is there any other important requirement?
Would this be ok: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604254

Well, not exacly. I can't make calls...
Don't worry about either your country or your calls. Search for an unbranded samsung official stock 4.0.3 ROM, flash it, check it out (smoothness and all) and then try to make a call. If it doesn't fly, just flash another modem

I got the following messages:
"Unfortunately, Messaging has stopped working"
"Unfortunately, the process androind.process.acore has stopped"
"Unfortunately, LogsProvider has stopped"
I still can't make calls (black screen + above messages)

Good news. It looks like the situation has improved after the factory reset.
I'll go to sleep now (it's 2:50am here in London/UK). Tomorrow I'll check all the functions and but it looks like I'm going are in the right direction.
I'll post tomorrow about the results.
Thanks for your help gastonw - it is really appreciated. :good:
np, go get some rest now.
[Q] Brand new S2. After flash: errors, slow... (more questions)
Bingo! The factory reset worked. Everything back to normal. I have my UK application and Kies update to:

Base version: I9100XXLQ6
Kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023

The only odd thing that the "About phone screen/Status" shows serial number 0000000000*. Not the end of the world.
Just a few additional questions
Now, before I make the same mistake again (do something I shouldn't, panic and ask for help)... If I want to root:
a) Can I do it without risking to brick?
b) Can I still use Kies after rooting?
c) Is there a recommended procedure that I should follow?
*update about it the next post.
Quick update about serial number 0000000000. Apparently, it is a 4.0.4 bug. The serial number is stored correctly internally but Android UI shows 0000000000.
The majority of people here probably already know that but just in case...

I manage to find the answers to my own questions :silly:
a/c) I followed the procedure described here. It worked great.
b) Yes. Kies doesn’t seem to care that the S2 is rooted
Result:
- 4.0.4 generic/unbranded/XEU firmware
- Updated and recognised by Kies.
- Rooted successfully.
- So far everything works smoothly and fast
Lesson learned:
- Factory reset after firmware flash resolved the problem.
I couldn’t be happier :good:

I heard of it - although I don't know the details. The 4.0.4 Brick Bug is the reason why I flashed to 4.0.3 instead of 4.0.4.
The Samsung Update application updated to 4.0.4. It wasn't, strictly speaking, my direct choice. I could have ignored the suggestion of updating but I though that, since the update was coming from Samsung and it was applied to stock firmware, it was a safe choice.

Lol, I remember you were on 4.0.4, told you It would be wise to go 4.0.3 and kies threw you back at 4.0.4.
Download gotbrickbug app from the store and check your chip (just for kicks). If it's insane, well...you can always go back to 4.0.3 and wait for the Jelly Bean update thru both Kies & OTA (Over The Air).
The thing is, you're completly safe whereas you don't flash any ROM or custom ROM, and perform things like wipes thru recovery and what not.
If you want to go in a flashing frenzee, then you might flash a safe kernel (like Siyah), but I think it's not the case, you seem to love Kies updates
The important thing is that your device is running smoothly on ICS; so, enjoy.

Hi gastonw,
Thanks again for you useful comments.
I suspected your comments about 4.0.3 vs 4.0.4 were related to my previous attemps of flashing 4.0... and your advice of staying away from it.
I run gotbrickbug and I'm happy to say it reports "Brick Bug? NO. Sane chip" - which I guess is good news.

[Q] could my galaxy die?

Hello everyone I just bought a new phone which is galaxy s3 , I read that my model may suffer the sudden death problem.
The device is new from the box and it is the 16GB model.
Its unrooted and running android 4.1.2
More information about it:
Baseband version: I9300BOLK3
Kernel version : 3.0.31 - 742798 [email protected] -111#1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Dec 22 17:04:04 KST 2012
Build number: JZO54K.I9300XXELLA
Sould I be afraid of audswn death or any proccesor bugs ?
check the SDS threads in General, they have all the info you need
samsung claimed the latest update has fixed sudden death issue,so far I do not see anyone who updated to latest firmware complain about sudden death.
wait, was there an official statement? got a link?
depends on how damage ur s3 had taken and if ur on the safe kernels and recoveries
If you are on XXELLA and haven't rooted and changed kernel then as far as anyone is aware you are protected.....although there has been no official confirmation, but analysis by the hard working devs suggests you're safe.
If you decide to root then make sure you install a recovery that has the fix(most of them now) if you change recovery - likewise with kernel, if you change that.
Thanks alot for helping so i understood that i am protected , i didnt root / change anyting all is stock and i am on XXELLA is that right ?

the kernel is part of the system(firmware), if you update the firmware, the kernel will be update too
but, if there's a custom kernel for your device, you can change it, but you have to rooted your phone first
Well, my phone is already rooted. I just want to update my custom kernel without accidentally bricking my phone. OTA updates no longer work. I try and I get "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped".
Bump/Update
Now sometimes my phone will randomly shut itself off when I'm in the middle of doing something like web browsing or listening to music.

I know this is an old post but I am in need of a stock ROM or a flashable custom ROM for this phone. I am on MA2 or MJ2. I will have to look at the phone again but I know it's 2 for sure. Is there anyway you could upload a copy of 3 for me and other users? Thank you
