You do not need root to flash a stock firmware.. if you want to unlock your phone from your carrier, i suggest you root your phone AFTER you flashed a stock firmware.. there are applications here in XDA that does the job neatly.
I hope this helps

Thanks!! My phone is already unlocked so i do not need root

Getting Rid Of My Root *HELP* PLEASE!!

Hello everyone. I have a galaxy s3 i535 on verizon wireless. I am currently rooted and have CWM and a backup of CyanogenMod10 (jellybean). I am currently on stock ICS my phone shipped with. My question is how to i get rid of CWM and my root. I want to be ready for JB OTA. Also, does my bootloader need to be locked when i accept OTA updates?
I want my phone back to just like it came when i took it out of the box.

This might help. Post in there.

Root has nothing to do with ota updates, if you update rooted phone it will most likely loose it during the process. What you need is bootloader locked, unlocked bootloader on ota upgrade can brick the device
Do i need to get rid of cwm and my backups first?

I'm pretty sure yes, you do need stock recovery but you can keep your backups, those are just files saved onto the SD card

How do o get rid of it?

No you don't need to get rid of it...as i said before the only thing required is locked bootloader, the update will overwrite anything on the sytem partition and eventually will get erased with the update. If you really want to return to stock find the stock .ftf file for your phone and flash it using flashtools or odin similar program..it's all explained in section 6 of the link posted by .xxx. second post of this thread....
Ok i dont want to brick it. So all i need to do is lock ny bootloader the when i get jb ota i wont brick it

Can someone else verify this?

Just read here if you want further proof, it's in the sony forum but same rules apply to all devices

it is branded, i got some carrier specific apps, and also the bootlogo of the carrier,a french one( bienvenue or something like that). So it must be sim unlocked if i am using orange...
once you sim unlock the phone, it should not sim relock when you flash a unbranded firmware through odin. I hope i answered your question

Q: Unlock bootloader?

Hi guys, I've had a Desire HD, Xoom and TF700 in the past and all of them needed to have an unlocked bootloader in order to flash custom roms.
Is it the same here?
Because rooting went very easy here, done in half a minute thanks to the cf method
nope, it's unlocked
Bootloader is by unlocked by stock.. But verizon version has a locked bootloader.

Thank you both
I indeed have an EU i9300 so I was able to flash a Rom very easily.
I just didn't trust the whole process cause it seemed too easy! xD
