[Q] Motherboard (PBA) to be replaced? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been struggling to fix my Galaxy S2 since a couple of weeks now. Have tried everything possible from my end.
The problem:
The phone is unable to register to the network (Vodafone). Infact even when searching for networks manually, it doesn't show any results.
After trying everything possible(software wise), I finally reset the binary counter and flashed official firmware and sent it to Samsung Service Center.
They called me up today & said that they don't know what the problem is and that software wise it has got no problems(which I doubt) & said that the motherboard (the PBA) needs to be replaced, which will cost me Rs. 8000 to Rs. 8500 ($160 approx).
I think since they are unable to get the problem, they want to change the motherboard and fit it.
The phone was working perfectly fine & I really doubt if the motherboard was damaged.
The series of events leading to no signal:
1. I was on CM9 in India when I left for Germany.
2. I flashed DiliDroid(uses JKay and Siyah Kernal) in Germany and used a local SIM (O2) while I was there.
3. I came back to India & for a day the phone worked perfectly.
4. Then maybe (maybe coz I don't remember perfectly) I installed Busybox and ran 'fix file permissions' somewhere.
5. After that I was unaware that my phone started to unregister from the network and then register again. It jumps from being in network (for 5-10 seconds) & then No network. So when I first start my phone it registers with Vodafone for 5-10 seconds and then gradually signal strength comes down from 18asu to 11asu to 5asu to 1asu to 0asu. And then it never comes back. I can but manually search for network and then register it. I could also make a call when the signal is there. But once the call is finished, the signal drops to 0.
6. After I did WIPE and flashed numerous ROMS and modems, the phone now doesn't even find any network. Now it just shows no signal.
Can anyone fix it? Is the PBA replacement (which is very costly) the only option left? Please help me.

Well not the same issue, But I had my PBA replaced too.
My mobile had an issue which was Hang on PC Conn logo.
Basically I flashed a bad firmware and was unable to recover. Tried everything from xda, whatever help I could find.
I went to the Samsung service centre, and even within a warranty, they said it will be with a cost as they had to replace PBA.
I had no other option and was trying desperately to get my mobile back. SO i agreed.
They replaced the PBA (which is basically the motherboard) and the cost was Rs. 6,800
So If you really have to replace your PBA, and If you from Mumbai, try the service centre I went to. As indicated, it will come at a slightly reduced cost.

If you had warranty, you should have bricked the device then sent it in.

[Q] No Signal (problem persists even after ROM reflash)

Dear all,
I have a Legend with S-ON (1.01), and I used fake-flash to change ROMs. The mobile phone has been fine with a custom ROM for more than 3 months now.
Suddenly, 3 days ago, the phone rebooted while browsing settings and when it came back on, the device could not recognize the SIM card or connect to the network and get a signal.
The problem is weird because the device (a) can find networks if I search for them, (b) can make emergency calls, (c) connects normally to both wi-fi and the SIM 3G internet but does not:
- get signal (always zero lines)
- recognize the sim card (always asks me to rescan for new contacts, and the process fails)
I tried wiping everything, I tried reflashing, I tried flashing another ROM. The problem persists.
Would flashing a new RADIO potentially help? It is the only thing I have not tried.
I am really at a loss here. The device did not fall down, or had a knock or any other user damage. The problem started suddenly and i can'f find a way out of it.
Anyone who manages to find me a solution gets a paypal beer
PS: Something important is that the phone DOES know that SIM card is there, and DOES partially recognize it: I am asked to put my SIM card PIN, which is accepted correctly.
Hey
What I'd do:
1.)Try the SIM in another device - could be a SIM problem...
2.) As you are 1.01, there is no risk in Warranty repair, so unroot and send back to shop if the sim proves OK in another device..
Probably a stupid suggestion but i had at one point no service when my battery cover was not on...
When i was rooting mine, i kept the battery cover off because i was stuck so many times in the middle of running step 1... so never bothered putting the battery cover on...
after i succeeded in rooting, i still saw no service... but as soon as i put the battery cover on , i was able to pick up the network
@QkSi1ver: The Legend's antenna is located in the battery cover, which is why you would have had no reception with it removed.

Which could be the reason for the SIM problems : if it is not set correctly it can't communicate proper with the mobile , that's why it asks for searching for contacts ( I had a similar problem a few months ago )
no network signal!

i don´t believe it! first of all, thank u kindly for ending my nightmarish odyssey through expert forums across the globe!
that just did the trick, uber cool! and yet it sucks, because i wasted most of my sunday and half of today to solve this, wondering why nobody even mentioned connection probs.
maan, i´m tired, i´m going to bed!

3G Data Disconnections

In the past 2 weeks or so I've had nothing but no end of data disconnections on my Galaxy S2. Simply put it I am constantly loosing Internet/Data connection, sometimes it will disconnect 6 times in a span of 30mins and quite surprising this has only happned in the last 2 weeks. All other functions on the phone work fine.
On the phone when i am on data/internet on the top of the screen there will be a small 3G symbol and next to it two small arrows (orange and green flashing). All of a sudden that will go off, phone will say something like "no internet connection" wait say 30 secs and it all come back on again, than on the net for 2 mins or so and bang off again, just ona dn off constantly.
Some points
1. I dont think upgrading the firmware will fix this issue at all, why because
when I got the phone new I never encountered this probelem and I still
have the same firmware in it.
2. My phone was bought through a company called Crazy Johns here in Perth
Australia, but they use the Vodafone network.
3. Could this be a network work i.e Vodafone problem.
4. Would a data hard reset of the phone fix this problem
Thanks

Always possible test near Voda mast

It might and is the first thing a service centre do .

Try a different radio to see if that fixes the issue, you can always revert back to stock.
Otherwise see if vodafone are having network issues, usually you can check for these types of issues on their website, lastly if all fails take it in for repair.
oK how do I try a different radio ?
I dont want to root the device as its still under warranty.
How about a data reset ?

Data /factory reset is what service centre does first .

Ok re the data reset I can do that myself, which I thought would be more convenient and will save me taking it in to the service centre.

[Q] Samsung S3 I9300 Signal Issue. H/W or S/W Issue.

My girlfriend has had a Samsung S3 (I9300) for a couple of months and has had no issues with it however she dropped it and broke the LCD . I ordered a replacement screen (Front glass, LCD, and digitizer) from eBay and fitted this without any problems. I tested all functions on the phone and it seemed to be working okay. The same evening my girlfriend went and run the update and went from 4.0.4 (I think) to 4.1.2 since then she has complained about signal issues which I have now witnessed myself. I wished she had waited a bit longer to make sure the phone was working fine before doing any updates as now I am not sure if this is a software related problem or hardware. There is no way to revert back to the older version to confirm software. I know one option on the software side would be to root it and install a customer rom but I have never done this before and even though reading through the forums the process seems to be easy I am a bit reluctant to do this just now.
The signal indicator sometimes shows a circle with a line through it, sometimes it shows a grey triangle with no bars in it and other times it will show a bar or two and even a full signal. I have noticed even without a sim in it that it can show a couple of bars of signal. I have not got this confused with the Wi-Fi signal. When trying to send text messages or make a phone call the following errors come up “Not registered on network” and “No signal found for mobile network”
Below is what I have done/checked so far
I have restored the phone to factory settings but as explained before this will only restore to 4.1.2. This time the only apps on the phone are stock apps, no additional apps have been installed just encase a third party software may have caused issues.
Her sim will work in any other phone. I have an S2 and have ported my number over from a normal sim to a brand new micro sim to try in her phone. Both of these phones are on O2.
I have made sure the IMEI number is correct and matches what the phone came shipped with.
I have double checked the APN details and these match what my S2 has. Although I am pretty sure this is only for internet and MMS and would not affect SMS and phone calls.
After check over the settings and restoring to factory settings I have fitted a replacement antenna which I also got from eBay. I doubt I have damaged the mainboard as all other functions on the phone work fine. (Touchscreen, Cameras, Sound, Wi-Fi)
For some reason I can get the phone to work at my house on both GSM (2G) and WXCDA (3G) although it seems to be more stable when it is on GSM. As soon as I leave my house and go into town (approx. 2 mile away) or over to my girlfriends (approx. 20 miles away) it will stop working. I have gone onto the O2 website and entered both of our post codes on the O2 network coverage checker and this reports that there are no services down in our area and that we should have a good signal.
I have come on this forum for some advice and hopefully someone can recommend what I could do next. I have had a little browse on the forum already but is there something I have missed? Should I root the phone and install a customer rom? If it was caused by the official update is there an a hotfix of some sort coming soon? Or is this a genuine fault with the phone? If it is a fault with the phone and it has not be caused by me I could try sending it back to O2 (where the phone was purchased from) or Samsung seeing as I can’t see any warranty seals so think I would get away with this.
Thanks in advance for any responses I get to this and I am sorry if I have rambled on and provided info that is not essential.
Flash O2 stock rom via Odin .
If that does not fix it its a hardware repair job and you will be refused warranty as you have self repaired .

[Q] Is my phone's network connection dead? Phone dropped...

Hi guys,
First post so please bear with me...
The phone was dropped recently and screen smashed up badly.
Replaced screen and thought all was working fine until tried to make a call/send a message when I discovered that the phone had no network access...
Here's the diagnostic process I've been through...
Wifi works100%
Sim works in other phones
Other sims don't work in this phone.
Checked the antenna assembly to ensure contacts okay
Sim definitely reading - able to read sim contacts
Switched to airplane mode, reboot, turn back on - no luck
Searched for networks manually - no networks found at all. Another phone (samsung galaxy gio) finds all three (Optus, telstra, Vodafone)
No networks detected automatically either
No network detected using 2g only
So, if my wifi is working fine, that should rule out an antenna issue which to me indicates a hardware fault with the network side of things...
Is there a way to verify this is actually the case? And if so, is there a way to repair/solve it without doing a motherboard replacement???
Here was I thinking that it would be a cheap, easy repair... :/

If you want it free of cost so first try flashing new firmware via odin and then check it if not then give it to service centre !:good:
Make sure you're using a stock rom just in case it is a software problem, but it looks like a hardware problem to me. I recommend taking it back to the repair centre where you got your screen replaced.
I don't think it is possible without a motherboard replacement.

thanks
I think I'll do a total strip down again just to make doubly sure that i've got absolutely everything connected in the right place and then if it's still not resolved, I'll look at sourcing a motherboard through some chinese friends...
The phone was actually purchased when in china, and as a result I had to flash it with an Aussie rom to get the google back in android. It's all worked fine since then until dropped which makes me think it's hardware related. problem with buying it in China is that I can't seem to find a motherboard online for it galaxy ace 5830i (the 'i' is the problem... can find plenty of 5830 mobos but seems the consensus is using a 5830 mobo will brick the phone...)
Oh well, thanks for the advice guys.
Even i had the same problem, but i solved it by flashing a stock ROM. You can try that or flash a stok kernel
recently I also had this same problem, even installing the stock rom did not solve, so I researched in several places and saw what could be problem with the IMEI, I did the whole process of repair IMEI and my phone is back to normal , try this method:

So...
I pulled it apart again to double check everything and noticed that the cell chip had come disconnected from the mobo upon impact and was only attached by three copper strips. After staring at it under a bright light for a while (no magnifying glass was to be found!), we stuck some super glue under it and tried to dry contact all the points... but it still didn't work.
However... after talking with a mate who's into circuit boards, he suggested that I try putting the mobo in the oven at 350 deg for 15 min to resolder all the joints as they use low-temp solder on these sort of boards.
I've got nothing to lose, so will be giving this a try when I get a chance and see if this brings it back!
I'll post back my results.
Yeah, and I recommend using a fine tip on your soldering iron just to be safe.

Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-I777 Not Registered on Network

Hey, so, I bought a samsung galaxy s2 from ebay, from a good seller with 5 stars, and when I got the phone, it came with root, which is all good with me, but when i put my SIM card in, and tried to call my home phone, BOOM Not Registered on network. I have spoken to T Mobile customer service, and they verified that the IMEI is NOT stolen, but the IMEI on the phone is not the one under the battery. I've search every entry about this on every site I could find to no avail. I will now list everything I have tried. Also when I turn on my phone it says something of MM#6. When trying to connect my phone via usb, it doesnt show up. (I had to use MobileOdin)
- Unroot
- a mixed amout of taking things apart and putting them back again
- ReRoot
- Flashing a Kernel and System to go back in time to GingerBread
- Getting a new SIM
- Using an app called Ariza (My Phone Is Not Supported)
- Spending an hour talking to customer service
- Going to Settings, Wireless and Network, and searching for my network
- Resetting a whole bunch of stuff in Wireless and network
So, if you find a fix thats not on this list, do tell... I have a 30 day warrenty on this phone, but I would rather not like to wait a month for them to figure out the phone is horrible and to give me my money. I hope somebody found a fix in my fails, but if you know a fix not there, help. me.
