i know there is many threads out there about this..
but i wanna know out of experience which one works best for CDMA users
as we don't need all the extra stuff about SIM cards
BTW i have a sprint touch pro
just in case i am looking for GPS software that will tell me where the phone is if it gets stolen by means of SMS or e-mail
Thanks

Smartphonetracker is a nice free app....it uses Google maps to locate....brings it right to the house view...(street view)
I second Smartphonetracker. It works great
so i just dl the smartphone tracker..... still kinda noob
1. when i check the SMS box it says #, thats my phone # right????
2. i put my email in and so does that mean i send a email to that address and it tells me my phones location???
just tryin to figure how this thing works
The sms box is phone you want the sms/ google map link sent to. If you leave the box blank it will send and sms to the phone that sent the sms to activate smartphonetracker on your phone, you click on the link, and it will open the phones bowser in google maps, and show you where your phone is.
The email location, is an email address that you want SPT to send the google maps link to. You will get an email from your phone with a google maps link, open it, and it will show you where your phone is.
Hope that helps
This application is fasinating! I really like Smartphonetracker! I'll sneak it on my friends sites and track them like the government!
i am actually trying sprite terminator now, ill see how it works for this week and then ill try smartphonetracker next week and compare
ill post the results
thanks,

NueGPSSecurity is free and works VERY well. So simple and elegant. http://www.nuerom.com/BlogEngine/post/2008/12/25/nueGPSSecurity-v112.aspx
I'm using SmartphoneTracker and am very pleased from what I've seen. In the e-mail it gives you a link to one of 3 maps sites, and tells you the speed it was traveling.

Just tried out Smartphonetracker
Now that is a cool app!
Has anybody used SmartPhoneTracker on a verizon phone with bored's GPS fix? My rom has the fix and GPS works very well using google maps and live search, but this program won't pick up the GPS (continuously says initializing GPS).
Thanks.
Anyone know why I get "Initializing GPS" for Smartphonetracker and it never gets past 0/1? I installed it to internal memory. GPS and data connections are on. I've got good signal. I'm running version 3.5 of windows .net
If I click "Send now" it says GPS not available. It's a Sprint Touch Pro with the standard rom.
Nevermind. Once I got out of my office building for lunch it worked. Must not have been able to acquire my position from inside.

now just if it was able to get A-GPS position(triangulate). I know it's not accurate as actual GPS position, but atleast it works inside buildings.
I think best would be two triggers, one to initialize A-GPS and second one to initialize actual GPS. As the GPS message does not get sent until phone gets GPS signal, it would be good to send A-GPS signal to get the proximity of the phone. Once the phone has GPS signal, it would provide exact location. This way if someone stole your phone, you would know the approximate location, and then just wait and get the actual position from the GPS and track that #@$#))#@$ down.
there may be a better way, but thats what i've thought about.
well, since starting this thread i settled on sprite terminator its been working great
tested it a couple of times and it works great!

RemoteTracker works very well on my Verizon Touch Pro with bored's GPS fix.
Guys this is great!!! Thanks a lot for this post!!!
I can't believe that nobody's brought up Flexilis. It's free and it does everything from GPS Remote lookup of device to remote alarm initiation(beeps for 5 mins and the person with the device can't do a damn thing to silence it, even if they power off the phone then when they power it on again it'll beep again for the remaining balance of the 5 mins), and remote wipe abilities.
Hi hope someone can help.
I've bought an Xperian X10 mini for my daughter. She loves it. All her friends love it. The iPhone owners want one! (Big) but.....
She is not a heavy user, and so put her on a PAYG contract. However it is running out of credit very quickly, and when I checked the usage it is nothing she is doing, but some background app that is regularly (hourly) connecting with GPRS and doing... well something, but I have no idea what :-S The info on the usage (from Orange) is (e.g.)
date & time event type dialled number/description duration/vol(Kb) cost (?)
22/05/11 19:22 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 38.0 0.00
with the same entry every hour:22
We have tried disabling as many sync type options / apps as we can find (e.g. Timescape) but it is still happening, and is driving me up the wall.
The reason I am even more annoyed is that most of the time it is at home, and connected (apparently successfully) to our wifi, so why the hell is it using GPRS anyway when there is an active wifi conection?! :-S
I have tried everything I can think of, and short of turning it off there seems little I can do. Can anyone help please??
- Which app is doing this?
- How do I configure it to either
i) use Wifi (preferred - would rather not disable functionality if possible) or
ii) stop auto syncing every hour?
Any help very gratefully received!
Thanks in advance
T
There are a couple of apps out there that can monitor data usage per app. But so far, all those that I found require Froyo (2.2) and above. I'm guessing your using the stock SE ROM so that's 2.1.
But there is an alternative.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Click Usage Statistics
Click Battery history
Click the Other usage dropdown
Click network usage
That should show you which apps are using your network connection. But both wifi and 3g; at least it gives you an idea.
As to how to prevent use, you could go to each app and customize syncing options if at all possible. If you just want to block an app from using the network totally, I suggest LBE Privacy Guard, free on the market.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security
They have a thread here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091065
EDIT: BTW, the phone shouldn't be using GPRS when wifi is available. That's weird. First time I've heard of that happening.
Many thanks for the info - really useful - will check the links you've given.
On the wifi (and yes it is weird - and annoying!) could it be "connected" but without a "proper" connection? Is there some way I can check, e.g. switch off GPRS and see if can see www?
Just tried what you suggested (disconnected the internet from my wifi router, but router still on), and my X10MP didn't even attempt to connect to GPRS despite using apps which use data. The apps returned errors.
Maybe your X10M fails to connect to the wifi? I actually have no idea what's going on.
you and me both buddy!
thanks for trying tho!
I'll delete the connection anyway and try set it up again....

I didn't need to enable anything to use that. Sorry, don't know how else to help.
well it carried on despite various fiddling. so I did a factory reset.... no accounts set up no sync etc - factory reset - and it's still happening??!! so something SE/Android is doing it, but I still have no idea what? Surely I'm not the only person with this issue??!! :S :S :S

very simple fix, go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > uncheck Data enabled.
that way mobile data (gprs,edge,3g) is turned off and your problem is solved. If you're using stock SE software, theres a Data Traffic widget that lets you toggle the Data Enabled setting on and off easily.
Sync is not the only thing using data traffic, background apps can too, as well as some of the apps she might be using. ( some apps have adverts )
Thanks. Had also been nosing on SE site, and am obviously not the only person with this problem. I unchecked the box a few hours ago, am hoping that that cures it. I've also found anotehr PAYG plan with the same provider that has unlimited internet, so may switch to that. So one way or another will be resolved.
However I am still left annoyed. This ****** device is supposed to be under MY contorl not the other way round! Not knowing what is doing this, or (and because of this) not being able to stop it is ****** annoying! As is the fact it (whatever "it" or "they" are) is using GPRS when there is an open wifi connection!!
Ho hum - progress eh...
Well turning off the Data seems to have done the trick thanks. NOt really satisfactory not knowing what is doing it, but there we go. Thanks for all the help all
If shes not using the data at all, you can try to delete all access points - GPRS,WAP, etc. even MMS...with no APN, no connection, no access to net, no credit loss...Just go to settings-wireless networks-mobile networks-access point names-click on any of them-press menu button and choose delete...Im working for the operator so I solve this kind of problems every day :-D It is easy if you dont want to use net in mobile at all but still I think you should flash it with SEUS because your problem is weird.
That's the thing - she does use data. so want it to be enabled. but the vast majority of the time is at home with a perfectly good wifi connection, so why won't it use that?!
Anyway am swapping to a PAYG tarriff promising "free" internet, so will see how that goes.
thanks t
Long story short. I want to turn my old Android phone (HTC Inspire 4G) into a tracking device to catch a thief. The area near my house is plagued by motorcycle thieves who swipe bags from walking pedestrians. My idea is to carry a bait bag with an old, broken laptop in it and sew my phone to the inside of the bag where it will not be found. For my idea to work best, I need software that can perform specific functions, and so I come here for recommendations on how to accomplish this.
I need the device to operate in an ultra-low power mode where it is only listening for text messages and all sound is turned off. I don't know how long I will have to walk around with the bag before the thieves takes the bait, so I need the phone to conserve as much power as possible until the actual tracking operation begins.
Once the bag is in the thieves hands, I need to be able to control and activate the phone via text message. The phone must be in Silent Mode so that the thieves don't hear the incoming text messages. Additionally, I would not want the screen to light up or for any other message indicator to possibly shine through the bag's fabric and tip them off about the presence of the phone.
First, I will be using a "disposable" prepaid SIM card (lets call this the trackingSIM). I don't want to use my actual postpaid account with unlimited internet (lets call this mySIM). I need mySIM to communicate with the trackingSIM. So the problem is that the phone WON'T have unlimited internet access when it is stolen. I'll need to activate that remotely. Usually this is done by sending a specific text message to the Carrier with a code that activates unlimited internet for a period of time and deducts the cost from a balance on the SIM. But since I won't actually have the phone in my possession, I'll need some kind of program that allows me to remote control the phone and tell the phone to send a text message on its own. In summary, I need to send a text message from mySIM to the trackingSIM which will then trigger the trackingSIM to send another text message to a specific number. (like, if I send "SENDTXT 5551212 internets" from mySIM to trackingSIM, then the trackingSIM phone would resend a text message "internets" to the number 5551212)
Once internet is activated, the Carrier sends a text message response confirming that the phone now has unlimited internet access for a specified time period. It would be nice if the phone could forward that reply from trackingSIM to mySIM so that I know the task is complete.
Now that the phone has internet access, I need to actually turn on the 3G radio and the GPS antenna (which should have previously been off to conserve battery) also via text message. Something like "GPS ON" and "3G ON" from mySIM to the trackingSIM would be great. And if the phone could reply with a confirmation text, that would be even better.
The last step would be to activate the tracking software. I need some kind of tracking software that would also activate via text message, and provide a confirmation text if possible.
Once the tracking software is activated, I need the following features:
Realtime tracking via a website. If it can work well on a mobile website as well (like an iPhone's Safari or Chrome browser), even better
Complete tracking history. Even if the signal dies, I want to know their last known location. If they move during the night and I have to sleep, I don't want to lose any data because I was wasn't watching every single moment. I plan to take all this information to the local police, so I need as much data as possible.
Once I have located the thieves loation and brought the police in, I need to be able to find the phone and bag as quickly and easily as possible. I'd like to be able to bring the phone OUT of Silent Mode, again with a text message, and activate an alarm at the highest possible volume setting, again with a text message.
Optionally, once I have Internet access established on the phone, I could possibly accomplish some of these tasks through another form of remote access such as SSH.
Optionally, if I could also somehow initiate a telephone call with the phone once it has reached its "final" location, then I could use the phone as a microphone as well and potentially get more evidence regarding the thieves' names, intentions, or guilt. This would also need to occur in complete silence as I would not want the thieves to hear a ring or see any flashing lights or lit up screen. Somehow I would need the phone to automatically answer a phone call that met some predetermined signal.
Optionally, it would also be nice to be able to initiate a voice recording remotely for the same reasons as 6. A voice recording might be easier to initiate and would probably have better audio quality (but would only be useful after the phone was recovered, whereas 6. could aid in the actual recovery).
Most of what you want can be accomplished very, very easy. If you can root the phone. You would be able to Install avast antivirus. Avast has an anti-theft feature that you can activate from a phone AND/OR the internet. You can lock the phone so no one else can use it, send a text or command from a computer to TRACK THE DEVICE. It will automatically turn on GPS and send location as often as you choose. Avast works on smart phones only. That is the downside. Avast does the alarm thing also. "THIS PHONE HAS BEEN LOST OR STOLEN" with a siren.

Even better I could build an app for you to do that as avast won't be able to start 3g send message to carrier etc etc it'll need Internet access up and running before hand also no call records while a custom made app can do all of this
If you like the idea just drop me a pm

Honestly, what do you need 3G for? It doesn't help track. GPS and Wi-Fi do that. Watch your cost. Avast has already been written. Call logs? What for. Check out the play store for an app called M-SPY. You text the phone and it will call you back. Avast does the rest.

I want to track the phone while it is on the move on the motorcycle in real-time. How could I do that with Wi-Fi? Additionally, free and open unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots are not available everywhere. There is no guarantee that the phone would be able to connect and send data once it reached its final destination wherever the thieves live/work. In fact, even with 3G there is no guarantee as there are always cellular dead spots.
Thanks for the recommendations.
My point exactly. Avast uses available Wi-Fi along with GPS to track in real time, displayed on a map. I don't believe you can use 3g for that. Avast has the siren, tracking and other features. My-spy has the call feature. Avast will automatically turn on GPS for tracking if it is off. Turn on a siren when you choose, for recovery. Text is for if you want to use your cell. You can do everything from a computer. The thieves will not know, as all this will be hidden, unless you lock the phone. M-Spy can review the text and call you back so you can listen to the noise around the phone without the perps knowing. These two together fit what it sounds like you need. Avast is free for the FULL version, forever. I am not sure about the cost of M-SPY.

So if there is no Wi-Fi available then your solution won't work? That sounds far too risky for my plan to work. The country where I live does not have ubiquitous free Wi-Fi access, especially in the shadier parts of town where the thieves are likely to reside.

Lol.
I'm a little shocked at someone asking me if my phone is rooted, I'll admit I was literally speechless for a second haha.
What I meant was that I have it installed already but haven't checked out the tracking yet. I tried it once with the gps turned off at work, and wasn't sure how to turn the gps on to see the unit. Theoretically, gps is one way, isn't it? It grabs the satellite signal that's beamed down and triangulates the position. So it would need some sort of data to send that data back to the end user online. Given that wifi access points are not guaranteed among criminals, I'd cast my vote for finding some way to turn on mobile data from the app also.
Btw, he's using an HTC Inspire most likely running my Rom. Yes, I'm sure it's rooted.

HAD to ask. rotflmao.:silly:
when you installed avast, did you install the antitheft feature ROOTED? IF SO, Access the app on your phone and view all of the settings for it.Also, go online to AVAST and login to your account. Avast will automatically turn on the GPS (NOT Wi-Fi??) on the target phone, SECRETLY. you can set it to report position at any interval. Avast has many more functions, also. maybe the one you mentioned.
AGAIN - LMAO HAHAHAHAHA.:cyclops:
P.S.
M-SPY does the phone listening feature.
I tried it when I got it (yes root installed with anti theft in the system partition) but I couldn't get it to work the first time for some reason. I'll try again tomorrow night and see if it works now. It's been a few versions back.
If it does work as advertised, I'd count avast as one of the easiest and most cost effective options you can find.

EXACTLY!! IT'S FREE.
Make sure you have setup ALL of the options. ANTI-THEFT and SETTINGS options. It is way easier to send commands from a computer but the "friends" numbers can send the text. on smart phones with a decent size screen, you can send the commands from the browser. one last thing- make sure avast has administrative rights. either in settings or anti-theft options.

I'm not sure if you just don't understand how these things work ... the phone uses GPS to track itself: yes. But how to get the GPS data from the phone to me in a different location? The GPS data must be sent wirelessly from the phone.
This requires WiFi or a Cellular (4G, 3G, Edge, etc) connection.
I cannot track the phone with a GPS connection alone.
I can't rely on WiFi to be available wherever the thieves end up.

The regular data on the phone will work fine. No need for faster data transfer such as Wi-Fi or 3g. Remotely turning on and off the data can be googled. Maybe there is already a way to do that.

Android Lost (androidlost.com) is an incredible tracking tool and completely free! (though I recommend supporting the developer by buying the "premium" version, all the "premium" features are also available for free)
Also, Avast! Anti-theft as recommended above is also great, and it does report over 3G or Edge or WiFi
Hello there! I was a relatively early adopter of Android and while I am not a programmer I am a nerd who can follow directions. I like to dial my devices in and maintain as much privacy as possible. I really don't like bloatware and when I was still working I would buy from Google rather than a pre-loaded cell. Now I am looking to get back to work and broke. I lost my last phone and got a lifeline (free) phone. It is a SKY Elite H55 with AndroidGo installed. The last time I had to use one of these phones I just took the sim card out and installed on a Motorola E5. For whatever reason I lost and had disabled location. While I am grateful to have cell service the Go phone experience is terrible and all I could manage to do is setup a wifi hotspot for other device. Just navigating menus was terrible and this one is newer but seems to have even more restrictions and less options. Also I have a thing for reading ToS and dont think anyone needs my data free. When I powered on the device I saw this as one of the only settings:
Allow Scanning: Allow apps to scan for wifi and nearby devices even when wifi or bluetooth is turned off.
What is the actual fudge is that? It BS and no I dont want that. I have not activated phone and qwould like to make this a more stock phone that just does basics. I can make calls with google voice on my iphone 8 all I need is this as a hotspot. The idea a default setting lets apps scanat will even after you turn of wfi/bt is offensive. Do I have any options.
Whatever I lack in skill I try to make up for by reading and following directions. I just did a complete softmod on a olld Nintendo DSI and it turned out perfect so I am ready to own my device. If possible. Danke.
Hi everyone please forgive my ignorance of development but I really need help I'll explain ,about 2 months ago I was had I've had this email for 10 years ,I had two factor authentication on .I told Google over a 100 times and a period of 4 hours I did not recognize this device .Now around this time I met a new "friend" who told me to push build number 7 times and it would make my phone better .Now mind you I did not know and still do not know but I believe he clones my chip or something...all calls and texts are being intercepted ,Gmail accounts I create are useless I think they are entertaining themselves locking me out .I have switched new phones new carriers put my phone in someone else's name it doesn't matter no associated emails .they have full remote access and are in accessibility after factory data reset using calender clock and contacts ,I have 400 system apps I can not Uninstall, if I try to remove permissions it just leads me in circles it says other apps with this permission and 20 more apps show up its so frustrating ( which all apps want all permissions physical activity location sms.contacts ,location microphone camera files storage I have screen overlays for network my phone screen EVERYTHING ...why does my phone have a little dot like I'm being recorded constantly ? They take screens hots listen to calls .my roku even says Apple TV. This person has Linux and Apple. I currently have a simple Samsung ao3 and moto g pure .another topic of discussion is this .I live at a hotel where we have dish network but as well there is xfinity open signal that has no security and I live by a building of sea offenders in Houston..these guys can be doing anything ..this friend use to live here for a year ....during corona virus which makes me think hes had plenty timevto set up shop ,,,and hes friebd with several of those said sex offenders lord only knows what those guys are looking at undetected there for a while when I would make a call it would say i was connected to a TV. Like casting .??? This guy has an xfinity wifi box that's busted open and I believe he's running my hotels wifi two blocks up the street to him .and I know my hotel with an app said that there were 4 wifi signals for my hotel which it's suppose to only be one .I know this is crazy sounding and I've been embarrassed time and time again in the phone store told I'm crazy .but I know what I know and I'm far from crazy .I have a Gmail that is connected to Google workspace ? Chrome has red arrow i can never update .I'm so tired please any info or light you can shed on my subject would be greatly appreciated
A terribly complicated situation.
If all this is true, I feel sorry for you.
A quick and easy fix.
forget and do not use previous email accounts,
remove the SIM card,
reset the phone to factory settings,
boot the phone and configure it, but don't connect any wi-fi network, and don't configure google account,
turn off the phone, insert the SIM card and boot the phone,
connect to the hotel's WiFi network (don't turn on connection saving) or better yet, turn on your SIM card's data connection, if you have that tariff,
set up a NEW n.p. account on gmail, but through a web browser, not through the gmail app,
if you see that everything works fine and you have no problems, then you can set up a google account if you need one,
NEVER enable debug mode in the developer options and don't listen to any advice from "friends"; you now have advisors on the XDA forum,
never install apps from outside the google store.

Relax, that only shows there are more notifications from apps (well, with 400 as you told it's no surprise).
As you have two phones, it might prudent to follow @ze7zez advice, start a new (phone) life on one of them with a "different" identity (aka account). See how that goes...
Don't despair, it might be a steep learning curve - just come back and ask

Hi Sigmund. I have done all of the above but yes debug mode is always on your right .and it says Rev 1.0 I read that Google released that in 2008 ? This is so messed up that was released in 2008 .can not fully reset because they are in accessibility settings with calender clock and emergency contacts .this has been 7 phones now I NEVER TURNED ON THE WIFI yet it connects without my knowledge I have earthquake alerts? I live in Texas we don't have those lol but several times ambet alert goes off incessantly and nobody around me had theirs go off ..this has been traumatizing I've lost my account of ten years its down right criminal that google let's these thing transpire.thank you for the advice about another browser!
Does anybody have any thing I can download to remove remote access for android ?? Tired of being spied on and I am unable to enter card info due to them stealing info .
The user is prob using remote debugging type of feature. Disable all dev options, run a full wipe, do not restore anything.
If you do not know what you are doing, never turn on dev options

Oi, let's try to break it down into smaller parts (just to avoid any confusion):
I was referring to circle at the end, position 7 - that shows there are more notifications from other apps. (you got that, right?)
Now you are probably referring to position 2, the gear?

First of all, if you do a full wipe: your data, contacts, emails, pictures and everything else will be gone...
You okay with that? I guess a firm "yes" here, besides you said you have 2 phones, so you can try that on one.
To reset a phone you go into settings, for me it looks like this:
1 settings
2 system
3 advanced
4 Reset options
5 erase all data (factory settings)
However, I am using a different phone and a different android (called LineageOS), so it might totally look different for you.
It differs quite often (eg samsung always feels weird to me). If you cannot find it, let us know what phone you want to reset.
After reset, best follow the list by @ze7zez

Not needed, a factory reset will kill that anyway.
PS2: Out of curiousity - how did you find your way into this nerdy place called XDA?
