So i've tried searching the forums for relevant info for about a week now and there is always some variable or 4 that makes it hard to determine if it's the cause for my issue. On stock software, my HSPA+ speeds would range from 2mbps (bits not Bytes) to 5 depending. Now i don't go above .35Mbps download. I've been allover the tri-state area with the same results recently so that has killed my thoughts that there may be a signal issue in the area. Here is my info:
Model : SGH-i777 (on AT&T)
Location - Fairfield, CT
Modem - i777UCKH7 (have also used a couple other modems after rooting with same results)
Kernel: 3.0.15-CM-g094e910 ([email protected]) (gcc Version)... sept 24 2012
AOKP Version i777 JB Build 9.224.2012
Android Version 4.1.1
My question is, i've tried various Modems thinking that is really the main place where the issue could occur and i've had the same results: poop data speeds; is it possible that the kernel be another cause of week speeds?i If not that, does any one have any suggestions?
Please help!! thanks
If you've tried different modems with the same results, the only other thing I could think of would be APN settings, which may have changed if you've installed another rom. Kernel should not have any effect on data speeds.

i found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576199&highlight=apn+settings and i'm applying them now, hopefully properly. Thanks sir. I'll check back and let you know what i find.
Other than APN settings and modem, the only other thing that I could add is build prop tweaks. There is an app called 3g/4g optimizer that will do that, or values can be set using root explore and text editor.
Edit... those seem like edge or 2g speeds, on cm10 there is a setting for that, it's in settings, wireless and networks, more, mobile networks.
Arg!!!> so i've reset my APN settings and encounter the same problems. Used the suggested 3g/4g optomizer to no avail. in fact i just ended up getting slower upload speeds. this is literally the only thing that's frustrating me in terms of my experience with rooting my phone. everything else has been golden.

Try checking your speed some time later in the night. It could just be a lot of congestion during peak hours.

Also DONT USE the speed test app as it gives wrong speeds. Use your web browser and go to Speak Easy speed test here: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ as it seems to be more accurate.
Some build.prop changes DO effect it as well. Not sure what your settings are but you can change them to see an increase. Shoot me a pm and I can post what and how to change the build.prop that I use if your interested.
Also maybe I missed it above and will look again after I am done typing here, but what ROM are you on? Stock rooted? Or other?

I know rooting has nothing to do with the issue i'm having per se, but the issue didn't start till i started modding the phone. (coincidental)
I recall reading a post that suggested trying a new or different sim card.
Edit.... also did you see my earlier edit regarding 2g network setting?

did not see the earlier post originally but i have toyed with the 2g settings, testing with settings both on and off just to be sure. with 2g only on, i'm getting half the normal speeds. at .14Mbps down. off i'm pretty consistantly around .30 Mbps down.
about to try something pretty rudimentary... asking ATT if they are throttling my speeds for any reason.
/wrists
2g? Edge?
there is no "throttle" on Edge, as there is no speed on edge. Im amazed you are able to perform a speed test on edge.
No reason to mess with Edge. Cant run a smartphone on Edge.

Downloading at .30 is edge speed, there is a setting for "use only 2g networks" . I thought that option could have been checked, causing the slowness. If AT&T throttled the phone it would get that slow also.

That cleared it up. Wasnt sure where the 2g part was coming into play.
There are apps, or maybe even codes that can tell you tower info, make sure you've tried different towers.
If you get no difference, flash back to stock, and call at&t.
The use 2g setting will only show the edge icon for signal. Also in settings-about phone-status, there is umts. I think it goes 3,8, and 15 with 15 being the best.

I got my vibrant back in september, and since then the data speeds have dropped significantly.
I remember being able to reach around 10-13 mb/s on wifi and around 4 or 5 on 3g.
now I'm lucky to reach 6mb on wifi, and 3g is rarely above 1.5/s
has this happened to anyone else? any tips on how I could fix it?

Are you talking about the codes that you can see from using SGS Tools? If so, I haven't messed with those.
Only thing I've changed manually sometimes are the APN settings, since randomly the T-Mobile US one liked to disappear on me before. But I checked online and the APN settings are fine.
Which cm7 nightly are you using?
currently on #26, but it might be cm7 as a whole. i don't remember my data speeds on cm being as good as they were on Team Whiskey's roms, and seemed like stock jfd/touchwiz data when i first got the vibrant were the best.
any ideas?
Hi guys,
Just wanna ask any Malaysians here experiencing intermittent switching between HSDPA and 3G, with connections dropping as you please in 3G?
I've been trying to deal with this problem, but it doesn't seem to go away, so I thought it could be my Modem and/or Kernel problem.
Any ideas?
Yeah, it sounds like a modem problem. I've had the same issue. Just try a few modems and see what suits best.

There seems to be data freezing issues when on Maxis, Celcom or Digi with default KF1 modem. This problem seems to be there on all modems so far. Disabling Fast Dormancy helps a bit, but not too much.
Usually, data freeze shows an upload. You have to disable data, then re-enable data for the problem to go away. There doesn't seem to be a way to fix it.
After 1month+, I found out it's a kernel + modem thing. 3g will be preferred unless you're actively connected (saves bat), and will switch over to HSDPA if and when you're actively seeking connection (running apps/games with screen on).
I'm currently on TWD 2.5 kernel, and KF2 modem.

Yeah still wondering why the phone could never connect to internet via 3G, whenever it tried to connect using 3G, there was always no downstream, and then it switched to H/H+.
This thread has become extremely quiet i see
Edit: Updated my radios, still having issues. More info in a thread below.
Hey all,
I recently started running leNoob CM9 mod, and I've noticed that my connection has bottomed out a bit. I normally would have 4-5 bars with little issue, now I'm lucky to have 1 or 2. I dropped a call earlier today, and I haven't had that happen in literal years.
Poking around I noticed there were radio versions better than what I'm currently using: (1.22.10.0421r, 1.22.10.0424r) but I'm completely unsure whether that's the problem here, or how to update them if it is.
I'm S-OFF, if that helps the solutions any.
Thanks for your time!
See the firmware thread in the dev section, you can update just your firmware/radios/etc and not have to run a RUU since you're s-off.

I was going to make another thread for this, but hey, I saw this one I made a few days ago and it came in handy.
Since the last time I posted I did the firmware upgrade to the 2.xx radios, but that sadly did not help my issues any. My data connection will randomly drop in any situation; indoors, outdoors, whatever. I can flip my phone to airplane mode and back to restore the data connection, and it usually instantly hits 4-5 bar 4G. Unfortunately, not long after that it'll drop to 1 bar and sometimes stabilize back up to 4-5 and stay there for awhile.
Other times, it'll drop to 3G, 1x, or turn off altogether. 95% of the time it will then just stay off until I reboot the phone or hit airplane mode. The rest of the time it'll come back into 3G or more commonly 1x and stay there until it repeats the above drop process.
I've had this problem on all of the CM9 mods I've tried (currently running Rage 1.2). I've tried various network modes but I've had the greatest success of getting any signal on the LTE/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA setting; the LTE or CDMA / LTE only ever gets 1 bar ever, and never improves.
Before CM9 on Stock ICS I had 4-5 bars anywhere in my house, and even at work (the center of a very large building) I'd still have 2-3 bars and rock solid data connection. I have not yet tried going back to Stock to see if that fixes my issues, but I'm leaning that way unless anyone has some better options here.

In Rage 1.2 at least, my screen-off battery life is almost bulletproof. 8 hours not on the charger and it only lost 3%. Screen-on time though is almost exactly the same as Stock, and that includes going to the Wheatley governor, sio, underclocking the CPU and cranking the screen brightness way down.
As far as the radio issue goes, somewhere in the Rage thread Neo mentioned that radios on AOSP roms atm are hit and miss; some people have no problems, some people have constant problems. Currently there's really nothing they can do about it IIRC, and we'll basically just have to wait until someone can pin down the problem. Either that or go back to a Sense based rom, to which I say, phooey!

Hey all - I hope this hasn't already been addressed. I wasn't able to find anything addressing it anywhere on the web.
First of all, I'm currently running AOKP 11-9, but I've experienced this issue on every ROM I've tried on this phone, including stock, and it's persisted through a replacement phone following an incident involving a swimming pool. This leads me to believe that it's not unique to my particular device, although I might just have awful luck.
Here's what happens: when the network indicator in the status bar shows HSPA+, my data works. However, the HSPA+ icon will frequently get replaced by a 3G icon for a few seconds, usually 4-8, and anytime the 3G icon is showing absolutely zero data transfers, up or down. This happens when I have four bars of signal, and it happens quite frequently.
What's puzzling is that HSPA+ is fundamentally the same as 3G, isn't it? I really just don't understand why my data connection is so finnicky, and I'd very much like to fix it.
Aside from fixing it, I'm also curious whether anyone else has similarly dissatisfying experiences with AT&T's HSPA network. I'm considering getting the Nexus 4, but if the HSPA doesn't get any better than this, I'll probably wait for a One X+. I had a Skyrocket briefly, and while it had its share of problems, it didn't have this one.
Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

Right, but this happens in the middle of downloading things like images, webpages, files, etc. I guess if the icon isn't the problem, it's an indicator of the problem - why is the data connection so intermittent when signal is strong?

Bars are not a good judge of signal, and it will appear lower on all AOSP ROMs for whatever reason Sense inflated the actual level... best bet is to try Network Signal Strength or a similar tool and see what your actual dBm signal level is, in mine it almost identical to when Stock, but then again you would have to have a pre and post ROMing level or a second phone to really see if there is any difference.
Are you actually having problems with signal or just the bars? If so, check the usual suspects like the back not on tight. Some people have reported wiping and reflashing with TWRP (NOT Amon Ra) makes a difference as well. FWIW, when I first went with a CM based ROM I thought things were very laggy and slow, but after a day or two it got much better, I did a battery pull reset as well, don't know if that really made any difference but it couldn't hurt.

You don't need a separate app for that.
System Settings, About Phone, Status, the current signal strength is shown. You can also change the status bar to always show it under System Settings, System, Status Bar settings.
