I've noticed that since I've been using CyanogenMod that I don't have touch to focus functionality on my camera. My colleague at work has a Galaxy Nexus with CM10, and he has touch to focus (makes sense I suppose being that it's a nexus device). I am wondering why there is no touch to focus functionality on the note with CM9 or CM10 (i'm not using CM10 nightlies).
Is there any way to re-introduce such functionality to my phone, as no touch to focus has made using this camera almost useless.

I had the same question. Even installed the 4.2 camera without any better results. So I'm trying out Snap Camera ($2 in the play store). It offers the 4.2-like interface and the auto focus seems to work relatively well. You'll want to hit up the settings and change the preview size to max though. Otherwise, your preview looks like it came from a J-SH04.

Hi all, as we all know the HTC Hero has it's weak spot in the camera.
On many ROMs that go beyond the official 2.1 Release it is very variing wether it work or not and wether it has certain features or not.
What I know and speculate so far.
-To use the camera, Android needs a camera driver.
-Apparently these drivers are kexts (kernel extentions) witch are only compatible with certain versions of the Linux kernel.
-On CyanogenMod/AOSP based ROMs the camera app gives us more raw images with less post processing as there are no information about the sensor color proprieties.
-On HTC Sense ROMs photos are more saturated, contrasty as HTC knows about the sensor and has engineers who optimised the post processing algorithms accordingly.
So why can't we have HTCs camera apk everywhere? at least it relyes on some HTC Sense (that reside inside at least one external APK) frameworks to do some UI/UX shenanigans. I suppose also that HTC uses a dedicated camera driver and not a generic AOSP one additionaly.
What I don't know and want to know is where all the features in the little settings overlay in the AOSP Camera App come from. At first I thought it was a hardware capability but all of the sudden came FroydVillain (at least for me) and had touch to focus etc.
So my question is: can we decouple camera development to make(and keep up to date) the ultimate, full featured camera driver/app for the hero that works up to 2.3.4 ?
t.l.d.r. : I want touch to focus and spot metering in all ROMS up to 2.3.4
Previous Questions in the forum have been answered pretty vagely and unsatisfactory, so I try to gather as much info as I can here. Please complete, correct and link me to what I'm missing out here.
Try using the WildHeroWWE-1.2 rom by erasmux, Its got a working camera but the camcorder doesn't seems to be working.

Camcorder does work you have to change the it from 640 480 to 320 240 in the settings
Thanks, I love this rom but the only setback for me is the SMS + prefix issue that I m experiencing with this rom, let me know if you have a fix for it.

Well, it's basically my understanding that the camera in aosp is, to keep it nice, less good than the one in BloatWiz roms. Although, what is the actual difference, photo quality-wise? I currently run CM10 and have no photos (serious ones, at least) to compare with CM10 camera ones.
Is it worse, much worse or almost on par with the one in bloatwiz roms?
The software of Touchwizz makes for nicer pictures than the stock camera app imo. I hope Google will improve their camera software greatly and will add a native HDR function.
That said, most functions can be added with a third party camera like Pro Capture.
The only reason I am using Omega ROM (TouchWiz based) is because of the camera quality, ESPECIALLY in night mode. CM/AOKP night mode is horrendous!
I love AOKP but the camera quality just isn't up to scratch. If they can fix that I will go back to AOKP right away.
Edit: Also CM doens;t have metering mode on the camera which is a feature I regularly use.

Just try Camera FV-5 in play store.
Good photo quality (You can fine tune to set the sharpness, contrast and photo quality in apps)
Metering mode and adjust of exposure etc are also included.
I use this app with CM10.

They can't fix it because of Samsung Korea.
Was wondering what camera app was the best functioning i.e best picture quality, least amount of lag, panoramic capable etc.
Droid RAZR M cruisin on 4.1.2 based CM10
Iphone4s or 5!
I have a Note II and although I have many cameras installed if I am going to take pictures of kids (the move fast and are very spontaneous) I use the stock camera.
Others I have installed include Camera Fv-5, Vignette, Pro HDR Camera, Cymera, and others that are built in to apps like the one for Instagram.

Download camera 365 app
Hi there! I recently found out that Siyah Kernel allows dual booting on the S3, so I took the plunge and used it to install RootBox as my second ROM. I'm quite happy with it, but I'd love to have the Samsung camera's features back - particularly, the HDR and low light modes.
Does a mod exist that allows the TW camera to work, or has there been any previous technical discussion of this that may help me in my quest to make one?
I tried to port it myself with my minimal modding skills, but it turned out to be more complex than I expected: the furthest I got was getting the Samsung camera UI to appear and then pop up "Camera failed". I broke camera functionality entirely for all other apps, too
I'm now [slowly] downloading the Android source to see if I can make the necessary modifications to make Samsung's camera libraries work, but in the meantime, I'd love to know if there's something I missed in my searches. All I found was an XDA thread requesting a port of the GS3 camera to the GS2, and a thread on another board which included some interesting info from someone who had tried porting the GS3 camera to AOSP but nothing I didn't already know.
Any info on this would be appreciated. Thank you!
I dont think anyone is even trying. The aosp mod 2.60 in themes section is good but I recommend installing camera 360 from play for effects and cool hdr
The hdr is only an effect though

I took that as a challenge and have been working on it nonstop since yesterday
I have the camera working on my modded ROM now, I'm hoping to release the ROM and the source patches (for applying to other ROMs) once I get more of the features working (I would like to at least fix Low Light and the Camcorder) and knock out a couple issues like the app launching the non-existent TW gallery to view photos.
Here's a video as proof. Apologies for the quality, but I couldn't find a decent screen recording app: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYX4PSVDiIU
Now that I'm here again, I may as well ask- where would the best place be to post this? It's related to both a modded app and a modded ROM so I don't know whether it would fit better in Development or Themes/Apps.
Themes and apps, definitely

Since upgrade to the Cyanogenmod, the camera on my i9100 is making zoomed pictures.
Digital zoom is set to 1.0, so theoretically there is NO zoom set, however when compared with another i9100 pictures are cropped.
To have the same view area I had to zoom to 2x on stock rom!
Picture quality is also very poor especially in macro mode (it's having problems focusing).
Currently I have the 11 revision (4.4.4) of the Cyanogenmod (nighty from 07/07/2014). Previous CM was behaving the same way.
All photos are saved as 3264 x 2448 resolution.
I like this software and don;t want to go back to stock rom but I also need a good camera, so your help would be highly appreciated.
Edit: I have downgraded to stock ROM and problem is now gone, so it must be something with CM.
I have since tried 3 different KitKat ROMs (C-Rom, Neat and Slim) and all suffer from the same problem - poor quality of BOTH cameras (front and rear) compared to stock Samsung ROM.
All rear cameras capture cropped photos compared to old stock ROM.
I don't think it's a fault of my mobile, since after downgrading to stock ROM everyhitng is back to normal, so it must be KitKat. I am just surprised that no one else noticed this problem
Did you disable True View in the camera app?

I could not find this feature in CM11, but found it in other KitKat system. After disabling camera crops a bit, I can live with that, however quality of photos is still bad compared with stock ROM. I will try to upload some photos today to show the difference.
After upgrading to SlimSaber, camera is taking good quality photos again, so problem solved.
