[Q] Phone lags when using data - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having some serious lag when using data-related apps such as TuneIn, Google Now and Dolphin Browser. Also happens when downloading. Other times it works completely fine then once I open any of these apps, it lags like there's no tomorrow..
On stock LIB rom with Siyah 1.6 rc3, CPU/GPU overclocked 1600MHz and undervolted (25-50mV).
OCUV doesn't seem to be the problem as stress tests and graphic benchmarks are completely fine with no errors, and since this has been happening even before I did anything, albeit to a less serious level.
Anyone else experiencing the same issue? Can't even undervolt too much because of this..

why don't you try using stock Rom for a while with out any undervolting or over cloaking and check the performance of your phone?

I guess that would be the only option for now?
will try that.

same problem with i thought it from undervolting or kernel problem I've tried it with stock kernel same issue exist i think it's jellybean problem.:crying:

redownloaded stock, flashed, undervolted 25-150mV, all seem okay now.
will wait to wait and see a few days but so far so good. I'm not gonna undervolt too much on the higher clocks as I'm only expecting battery extension on lower clocks, ie when in sleep or screen off.

[Q] How dramatically can you undervolt with the Glitch kernel?

Ever since I got my hands on MIUI and the Glitch ML kernel, I've been amazed at the undervolt results I've been able to achieve.
I assume I'm not the only one messing around with their voltage settings, nor am I the only one doing so on the Glitch kernel.
Question is, how low can you go? My settings are in my signature, but how far have the rest of you Glitch folk been able to go using the ML or LL kernels? Post your results below!
For myself, I'm currently testing out the low end of the spectrum, seeing how low I can get the 100mhz and 200mhz range and still be stable. Even using 200/100 as my Screen Off profile. I never get sleep of death with Glitch ML.
Either no one reads the General forums, or few people care much for battery savings. Oh well.
It's not that, the lower the volts, the slower the phone. I'm undervolt; games lag
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
Why would undervolting lag the phone? I'm undervolting, not underclocking. Games I play are as snappy as they've ever been.
It depends on phone i cant go under 25 my other vibrant could go -200 on 100mhz

Max stable overclock on your 3D?

Honestly, I'm down to 1512. A notch above that proved unstable as far as I can tell. I can run benchmarks fine upwards of ~1800, but I'll get random force closes and boot loops if left for any extended period of time. Also have issues with display not coming back on (menu lights and led backlight work, but no image). The stability test app is pretty much worthless too. Let it run for 6 hrs no errors. When I turned it off, BAM restart.
So what is your max, truly stable, OC?

edit: just for archival's sake, using Anthrax-CDMA-Sense (v1216) with Scott's 2.08.651.2 Stock Rooted ROM.
That's interesting...
I'm using the same Kernel with Scott's 'senseless' ROM and I have my clock set to 1.836 with no issues.
I'm no expert but have you tried using a super wipe (or just manually wiping everything including system) and reflashing?

My first 3D was pretty stable at 1.94 but when it started getting the black screen of death I got it replaced through sprint. The Refurbed one they gave me (the one I have now) freezes if I go to 1.6..
I used to do 1.94 but it gave me random reboots (nothing fatal)
I stick to 1.5 smartass when the battery is greater than 50%, then 1.2 smartass, and .8 conservative at 15%.
On charge it's 1.7GHz lagfree
Depends on your CPU, they all arn't created equal. I'm stable at 1.9 GHz with no reboots. I'd say that 1.5 is a good mark, seeing as the HTC Rezound has the exact same CPU as the Evo 3D, just clocked to 1.5 instead of 1.2.

This is interesting. I bet the CPUs, while manufacturing wise are identical, are chosen based on thier bin level for the different devices.
After writing this post I cleared Dalvik cache and switched my kernel to RCmix-evo3d-v7. I ran it at 1.62 or something like that while I was running around Christmas shopping, so it had heavy use. Google nav, lots of phone calls, texts, Pandora, etc with zero issues (especially that display issue I mentioned is gone, thank god). After getting home I was so impressed with it that i stepped it up to 1.782, and we'll see about that, although I'm not holding my breath.
Basically I learned that your overclocking potential (or maybe more accurately system stability regardless of overclocking) is greatly influenced by your kernel.
Akasa Fox, mind sharing your kernel version, ROM and version, and hboot and any other potentially relevant information I may be forgetting? I'm impressed with your performance.

I like this approach of different clocks and governers based on bat level. Is this a pro feature of the Antutu app?

The kernel does have a decent bit to do with your max OC, but it also has to do with the CPU you have and if it was made on a good day at the foundry or not and how good a section of the silicon it came from.
I used to run RC Mix kernels before Chad was around, but those kernels always ran MUCH hotter. When playing a game my phone would literally be almost too hot to touch. Chad's Anthrax kernels have always been cool and after playing a game for a while (same game, same amount of time) the phone is just a bit warm. So you may be able to go farther with an OC on RC Mix kernels, but your phone's lifetime for its processor is going to be a whole lot less. At the temp it was hitting id bet it is well above its max rated temperature level and degrading the processor substantially.
Some people may not be able to OC far, but how far can you undervolt? Many times those who cannot OC very high can undervolt like crazy (me included) and those who can OC much higher than most also cannot run really low voltage levels. My phone is 100% stable @ 192MHz on only 700mv. Thats the lowest Chad allows, Id love to see if I can be stable even lower. I am also 100% stable @ 1188MHz (HTC Stock) with only 987.5mv. But the most I have ever been able to overclock stably (even with RC Mix kernel) was 1.6GHz, with the max benchable being 1.72GHz. Any higher and the phone insta locks up and reboots. No matter what voltage.
Hm, that's a good point. I'd like to push the undervolt limits as well to see what its got. That anthrax kernel I mentioned in the first post was terribly unstable for me, but maybe I should give it another shot after researching the super wipe method mentioned a few posts up. Is there a version of his kernel that everyone is having good luck with? Or is the latest one the best?
Also, I don't see voltage options in the antutu program. What are you using for your oc/uv utility?
Thanks.

His latest 100% Qualcomm based kernel is incredibly smooth. 100% stable for me. I'm giving this kernel a lot of praise considering I used to have crazy reboots and lockups on the older anthrax kernels.

Weird. Well, I will give it another shot before writing him off. I'm a noob so its entirely possible and probable that I did something wrong.
I found setcpu last night, but I didn't see any uv options. Does rcmix not allow for it?
Thanks.

My phone won't overclock for ****. At first it would do good and I could get around 1.7-1.8, now when I try anything after superwipe and wiping through nand, I can't get the thing to post at 1.5 and remain stable without lockups/freezing and slowdowns. The phone even has trouble at stock now. I haven't traded it in for obvious no s off reason.
1.78 GHz. I can do 1.83 but not very stable.
1.782 runs all day locked at that speed but I usually run bcblend kernel @ 1.512 max 194 min. Ondemand.

I know it was Virus' InfectedROM (Before the nightly), Software 2.08.651.2, HBoot 1.5 (HTC Unlock.) [Edit]: I'm almost certain the Kernel I used was Tiamat, hard to remember though, seeing as I traded out performance for battery life by switching to viper ages ago. (And that i'm a flashaholic )
im @ 49 hours uptime on RLS4 of my new kenel @ 1.94GHz IntelliAnthrax
..no RLS4 is not public yet -- testers will have it in 1-2 days

[Q] my note blacked out

so...my note is rooted with OC and on CWM beta 3. i even have flashed a battery percentage status bar mod (after many tries and lots of FC's issues) i finally got everything stable on a stock rom oc'd at 1.8 and this thing was sick dude...i mean so fast and big and bright and perfect...no problems except for 1...was getting random reboots...3 a couple days ago while using boat browser every mtime so uninstalled and started using dolphin. worked great until 1 rando reboot today while on dolphin browser...i figure no big deal it happens when you tweak your phone...but then all of a sudden it did something different just now it did...it just randomly rebooted while toggling wifi on except after it booted back up i couldn't unlock the screen or get into the launcher and the screen went black and unresposive. power button did nothing even holding it down...i pulled the battery out and then back in and restart and phoone booted up normally. clear as a bell and lightning fast...
so i just dialed down the oc to 1700...hope it's all good though...can't think why it would do this...
thanks?
Your phone can't handle the 1.8 ghz overclock.
When overclocking, no 2 chipsets will perform the same. Some will be able to overclock to 1.8 and some will not.

So then is this OK?
Well anyway I guess I'll post back with the results. Cuz I'm running that way now. Hope I don't brick this beauty.
All opinions welcome.

You won't brick by overclocking. If you run it at an unstable clockspeed for your phone, you'll just be getting constant reboots.
1782 mhz should be fine. Try benchmarking your phone using Quadrant and Antutu from the market to stress test your phone at that new CPU speed.

yup, sounds like classic too-overclocked symptoms to me. Back it down a notch like you have already done and try again...

Can you overclock on a rooted stock kernel?

Hi tried searching but no luck. Just want to know if I can overclock / undervolt on a stock kernel rather than a custom kernel like Doom's kernel. Reason is I had bad experiences with changing Kernels with my samsung galaxy s, like signal problems, battery problems etc, its especially signal problems, it made my 3g even slower than hell.
No, it's not possible.

you cannot becose the kernel is the one who stops the cpu to pass a certain frequency, but on the xps i don't think you need to overclock, i tested the cpu with a running video at 1080p and playng gta 3 or Riptide Gp at same time and i didn't succeed to froze the the device, and both game and video run smooth with no shutters at all!

[Q] High CPU usage causes lag to my sola

Hi.
Several days ago my sola started to lag by itself, almost all the time. Recently I found out that the CPU usage was very high (ex: using governor performance the usage is 100% on 1.0 GHz, using powersafer it's 100% on 200Hz, using hotplug it runs around 80-90% on 200Hz or 1.0GHz, sometimes around 60%).
I also tried changing the I/O scheduler, it's not really working.
Sometimes it works normal, but mostly are when charging.
I'm a real noob for such thing.
Please, I beg of you, help me fix this problem, whenever this happens my heart broke.
Note : It's rooted, using Speedy kernel v5.5 or v5.0, I don't remember, Project GX Gaming ROM v5.0.0.

If i got u right u are using custom ROM?
Try to set back original one, that may solve your problem. I would suggest to stick with GB instead of ICS on Xperia Sola.
I am not a pro with all this stuff, but I was facing few problems with updating to... Downgrading to GB solved some of them
how s your battery life?
It depends on what governor I'm using, but that's not the main problem here.
It's about endless CPU usage for nothing that makes my phone lags all the time. Even it lags as hell right after boot now.
I'm about to change to Galaxy Y now though.
No need to do that... Everything is fixable... Mine works like a charm... No laggs at all.. Only thing I claim about is battery... Notice that there is no perfect phone around... And sola is not the worst one. But it s up to u to decide...
Good luck
