[Q] filmon not working on gb roms - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am not sure if it is just me however the filmon app just doesnt seem to work on any gb roms i have (407 stock, CM7 & DSC ) yet it works fine if I revert back to stock froyo rom (351 or 360). Most other things seem to work just fine and I have not seen any other posts about this particular issue. I would really like to go back to CM7 for obvious reasons and wondering if there is a fix or tweak I just do not know about or if I am doing something wrong.
Thanks

Do you have adblock or something like that running? What is logcat saying?
I will not install filmon, cause of it's bad privacy habits. (adtech, yume and acra)
good luck

Thanks for your reply.... much appreciated.
i am not aware of any adblocks but here is what logcat says in case you want to have a look and it looks like there might be ( 09-29 09:03:54.299 D/debug (1103): Ads not enabled!) but I really am not sure...
all I know is it works in stock froyo, however stock 407, CM7 and even DSC1.5 all buffer continously and never play anything (CM7 actually after a long time will play sound with no picture). Its a small thing really but quite curious if anyone has this working well. Every other app I know if works perfectly and cant pin it down.
Thanks

I think, that's the interesting part. It seems, like a problem described in http://code.google.com/p/ankidroid/issues/detail?id=123
To me, the program filmon opens too many active MediaPlayer objects. That's a bug, the developer has to fix. Basically the programm
does somewhere in a loop:
Code:
MediaPlayer filmonplayer = new MediaPlayer();
where it just should new the object outside the loop and inside the loop just
Code:
filmonplayer.reset();
I don't know who is cleaning up after this in froyo. Maybe some kind of fast friendly garbage collector. Sorry for not digging deeper.

[Q] What's causing my 4G mobile data to stop working without any indication?

This is what I experience every once in a while on this phone (stock rooted):
1. I'm connected just fine to the 4G network with fast speeds through wi-fi tethering. The phone is sitting in one spot the entire time.
2. All of a sudden (at random intervals), data stops flowing and I can't access any websites on either my tethered computer or on the phone itself.
3. I check the status bar on the phone and it still displays a 4G icon, the arrows are not blinking to show any activity, but the icon is there.
4. Sometimes it's able to reestablish connection by itself anywhere from 5-10 seconds later. Other times the loss of connectivity endures for an indefinite amount of time.
One thing that fixes it 100% of the time is toggling mobile data off and on.
I was able to do a logcat of the radio buffer on my phone and tried analyzing it myself to see if I could figure out what was going on, and what I notice is that around the time that I lose connectivity (roughly around the time 01:05:40), I start to see these lines get repeated over and over again:
D/CDMA ( 708): [HtcRadio] 3GIND:1
D/PHONE ( 708): phonebase getDataActivityState
And the line that I see missing during the time that I have no connectivity is this:
D/CDMA ( 708): [CdmaServiceStateTracker] RUIM imsi=*******59888340
Around 01:15:52 in the logcat is when I toggle mobile data off and on (and as expected, data starts working perfectly again).
Do I need to do a different logcat or is there enough evidence in this to show what's wrong with my phone?
FWIW, I also have a Samsung Galaxy S III and tether to it in the same exact fashion (same SIM card, network) but I have not been able to reproduce this issue on that phone. I prefer the HTC for its stronger reception in my house, getting around double the speeds of the GS3, but it seems to be at the cost of stability (perhaps the HTC has a hardware defect?)

I was seeing this issue on Nightly build so I loaded up the bleeding edge ROM from MDMOWER (20130617), I had the same issue at first but then forced it to LTE/CDMA/EvDo mode only and disabled all roaming and went an entire day with zero issues. The nightly doesn't have this mode available but I disabled all roaming and trying the option that IS available (CDMA/EvDO) to see if I have the issue.
Will report back but my theory is that the radios are pulling in stronger GSM signal than the other radios but VZW doesn't have any space in those here in the states so the phone is being forced to ignore a better signal.
Forgot to mention that I am running on "LTE/CDMA" mode with the stock ROM/radio, which under Phone info (using the app "Network") displays as "CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto". I have run into this issue running "LTE, CDMA" mode as well (which disables 3G I believe).
If the RIL for CM10.1 is actually better than the stock HTC one, I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.
To update, I'm giving mdmower's bleeding edge CM10.1 (20130616) build a try to see if his RIL is more stable. One thing I already notice is that I get much slower speeds tethering over 4G in the same exact spot (about 5Mbps downstream as opposed to an average of 20Mbps down when running stock), perhaps attributed to the fact that the built-in tethering seems to only put out an 802.11b (11Mbps) wireless signal rather than 802.11g/n. If I test directly on the phone, the speeds return to normal, so it's probably the tethering implementation.
At this point I'm just trying to see if the connectivity drops can be fixed by software rather than it being an unavoidable hardware glitch/defect. I don't think the change from g/n to b should make a difference since the connectivity is dropped on the phone itself as well (all the while still showing the 4G icon).
Sometimes I wonder if it's just an issue with the status bar not removing the 4G icon when I lose connection. If that happened, I would be content because then I at least have an indicator of when data stops working rather than having to look into debugging code to figure out what's going on.
I was able to reproduce the issue on the CM10.1 bleeding edge 20130616 build and got a radio logcat available here. Just like the stock ROM logcat, it looks like something is happening around the time I lose connectivity (sometime around 18:58) which causes it to start producing these lines repeatedly:
Code:
06-18 18:59:01.202 D/RILJ ( 942): [UNSL]< <unknown reponse> {1}
06-18 18:59:01.212 D/RILJ ( 942): responseDataCallList ver=6 num=20
06-18 18:59:01.212 E/RILJ ( 942): Exception processing unsol response: 1010Exception:java.lang.RuntimeException: getDataCallState, no ifname
I have no Android development experience so I wouldn't know how to debug this, unfortunately.
This time when the issue appeared, the phone automatically regained connectivity (without needing to toggle mobile data) a few minutes later (roughly 19:02) and the only evidence I can see of something happening around that time is the appearance of these lines (which normally appear occasionally throughout the duration that connectivity is still active):
Code:
06-18 19:02:05.299 D/RILJ ( 942): [0224]< DATA_REGISTRATION_STATE {1, 3602, null, 14, null, 20}

Can anybody direct me to who I should be asking for help from? Perhaps there's some CyanogenMod RIL programmers or other experienced Android developers that would know what's going on?

Changing "System select" shouldn't have an effect on signal/data stability in your home region. I have mine on "Home only". Let us know if you find otherwise. I agree with the other settings quoted above.
I am having this issue as well, and the settings above have not been a remedy.

[Q] What's causing my 4G LTE mobile data to stop working without any indication?

I have installed AORP ROM (cm-AORP-4.4.2-RC-1.2-20140111-urushi) on my Xperia Ray. Everything seems to be good except WiFi. When I turn on WiFi, it doesn't connect.
I compared my settings with a friend (who is using nexus) and they are same. He tried to login using his credentials. But that too didn't connect. It says connecting for sometime and after a few minutes (may be around 3-4) it just disconnects. I could not retry. I have to turn off and on wifi.
I had tried reinstalling (after cleaning up everything) the ROM but that too didn't help. Any suggestions on how to get it working?
Maybe the rom wifi is buggy..

I read through the previous posts in the ROM's mail thread and that said that wifi works fine.
Also, I cleared everything and reinstalled from zip and still wifi didn't connect. The following is from logs..

Today I tried to connect to wifi in my friend's home. And that connected. It uses "WPA/WPA2 PSK" Security type.
The one, I could not connect has the following details:
Security : 802.1x EAP
EAP Method - PEAP
Looks like this is a bug.. Any ideas on how to go about this?

Googled a bit and still could not solve this issue
Tried installing WiFace, Wifi connection manager, instructions that talked about modifying the key_mgmt attribute in wpa_supplicant.conf file.. but that too didn't help..

Getting access to the input handler from the IRQ lane

Bare with me I'm new.
Whilst researching the input event system in the kernel, I came across the need to access the input handlers that have already been registered with an IRQ lane given only the irq lane (just the integer). Is there a method to access ALL event handlers associated with an IRQ? I am looking to map each list of handlers from a given input device (say mouse) to each possible event that the device could make.

Google Play Services 12.2.17: Faulty config? DeviceID: Null / High data consumption

Hey folks,
I've bought a China rugged phone (Doogee S60) for using it with OSMAND when driving my motorbike or when on a hiking trip. Because battery life is important and because I'm using prepaid SIM card, my attention was on battery usage and data volume usage while first time hands on the phone. As often the case, Google Play Services are draining battery and - which is not common - those are "eating" my data plan of prepaid SIM card. But first things first:
Android and Google Play Services versions:
Android 7.0 - Patch Level November 5, 2017
Not rooted, stock ROM
Google Play Services 12.2.17 (has been updated manually)
Installed apps:
NovaLauncher 5.5.3
WhatsApp
Telegram
OSMAND free
Firefox
Doogee Home (launching browser with Website / old launcher)
Toolbox
MediaTek apps for sensors
SOS button app (disabled)
What I've done so far (basic stuff):
To limit battery consumption, I've disabled every Google app (PlayStore, Music, Maps, Chrome, Backup Transport, Account Manager, ...) with exception of Google Play Services. Also I've turned off "Find my phone", "Nearby" and limited "Location" to "Only GPS". So I could improve battery usage, but still Google Play Services is the second consumer of battery (after Display) and the top consumer of cellular data is Play Services. So I've turned off "Background data" for Google Play Services. It looked like I could limit it to a good level (approx. 2 MB per day), it's still communicating. Push services should be impossible now and even Push service is possible, in compare to my day-by-day used Android phone, data usage of services is too high. So I started investigation as far as my computer knowledge will let me.
Current issue:
To cut the story short: I went through USB debugging and other stuff. I could find out following, which is not the case on my normal phone.
netstat
Many open connections to Google servers (port 5228 / nothing is transmitted or received).
More than 10 connections opened by process com.google.android.gms.
Google Play services diagnostic app
It's showing those events almost endless:

Process ID 1945 is "com.google.android.gms.persistent".
Process ID 1141 is "system server". I have no clue why this phone is contacting apple.
Conclusion
It seems like Google Play Service is faulty. Even if background data option is turned off, those services try to connect to Google servers, keep connection open and close them again - according to log files. Due all 15 minute cyclic reconnection attempts, it's using cellular data volume unnecessarily. Per day around 2 MB. I've cleared Google Play Services cache and rebooted phone - without effect. Yes, I could ignore described issue because it's not affecting phone functionality itself.
I'm at a point, where I have no further idea and I would like to ask you ladies and gentlemen if you had similar issues in past and/or if you have other ideas how to proceed with investigation. For example: How I can set a Device ID? Thanks for any helpful input.
Best regards,
Tim
