I've been searching and looking around for a couple weeks now. Is it possible to root the Rogers HTC Evo 3D without unlocking, with s-on, and without downgrading the hboot?

Unfortunately there is no method for gaining s-off without having to unlock first. However with this guide that ramjet73 put together you can have your phone s-off with "locked" bootloader by the time you finish performing the wire trick. You will have to have to unlock your phone and gain root first before you perform the wire trick. A lot of people have said that using a paper clip works the best. Well here you go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
Dont forget to hit the thank you button if I helped you in anyway and don't forget to drop a thank you for ramjet either.
Thanks for the referral jsparta26, but he's got a GSM model and my guide is specifically for Sprint S-ON phones.
If you had the CDMA version you could do the hboot 1.4 downgrade for S-OFF that requires bricking the phone but doesn't need HTC unlock. There was a "quick root" utility posted in the General Forum a few weeks ago that didn't work on the CDMA model with the Sprint ICS build installed but I don't know if it's been tested on the GSM model yet. Post #5 in that thread says it requires HTC unlock, but the OP never confirmed that in that thread or the original version he linked.
Maybe a GSM user knows of a way to get S-OFF on your model without the HTC unlock. Are you aware that the JuopunutBear wire trick resets your bootloader status to "locked" (at least on CDMA) even though you have to do the HTC unlock as a prerequisite? There is no indication on your phone afterwards that you were ever unlocked. Once you are S-OFF you can flash whatever hboot you want.

Thank you both for the info. I tried the htc quick root program but it said my phone was patched and failed. I was just wondering if I could just get root without unlock or s-off.

Are you still on gb or ics? Kingcobra has a ics Rom that is was developed from the rogers ota, why do just want root access?
(don't ask me for help, as I couldn't care less if you phone explodes,eh!!!)
I'm on the official ICS update. I just wanted root to use certain apps like ad free.

Oh my bad ram. Lol I guess I overlooked that. It's all good. I'm glad you cleared that up. I am not sure how to go about getting s-off on gsm but with rams suggestion hopefully you can find the answer your looking for sithlord. Goodluck.

I have to admit that I'm a little confused. I'm just about to meet a guy to trade my current phone for the 3D.
Some of the things I'm reading lead me to believe that unlocking with the HTC method, rooting, etc will NOT let me run ICS once it's released.
If I get a phone on 1.50 today and unlock and then root using the posted methods, does that keep me from being able to run ICS ever?
If no, why wouldn't I want to use the HTC method?
As an aside, will wi-fi tether work with 4G if I run wifi tether?
Please help!
Thans
You will be ok. If your cell comes with 1.5 you can still root using htc method and you will be able to have ics and will be able to tether as well.

The method for flashing ROMs with the hboot 1.50 is that you flash it differently (through fastboot) though there are many guides out now that make it even more simpler. Anyway, the guides out now make rooting and flashing a piece of cake so don't worry.
1.50 S-ON = no worries, one more step, all good
Thanks Guys. I'm freaked out but am going to give it a try. After having a Photon and an Epic Touch, I'm so glad I have my 3D back, even on 1.50 bootloader. I missed this phone.
unlock coming soon
hboot 1.5 will be unlocked soon. and all is good with having s on unlock from htc. just another step!
Idk I'm not getting my hopes up on the new 1.5 hb unlock. You can flash roms in recovery the kernel won't flash tho. Fortunately this is android so there's an app for that.

like the title says... is it done yet? been looking and looking for solutions to that question. i'm already rooted using the htc method. but still looking for a way to get s-off.
check the 3D general section, there are a few threads on it with varying info.
short answer though - no
There has been some effort made towards this front, with little success. Whether you think it's a smoke screen, or not, evil devnull, and his team, attempted this around thanksgiving, and couldn't come up with anything. Not sure if revolutionary is quietly working on something, or if they are waiting for the ICS update, or if they are just done with bootloader unlocking, period (I'm not bashing those guys, but they have been eerily quiet since the bootloader changed to 1.5).
The unlocked, non carrier branded GSM guys have found a way to revert back to an eariler bootloader, using the HTC unlock method, and then performing a similar method to what the thunderbolt/evo shift 4g guys did to allow the Hboot to accept a RUU with an earlier hboot.
I think this doesn't get much attention, because the HTC unlock method allows you can do almost everything you could if you had S-OFF. The only thing missing is being able to flash radios.
At this point it wouldn't make sense for devs to come up with a solution now. Not with ICS around the corner
is there a temp root for hboot 1.5?

whats ics?
The only reason why i ask is because, ##data# or what ever it is, i found my midi number using an app in market place, but when i tried to adjust my volume. it doesnt want to work. i was wondering if me having s-on and rooted is affecting it in any way.
Ics is ice cream sandwich new android OS hopefully coming to the EVO 3d early 2012.

Edit just saw your whole post have a look here my man this is where to start.
s off
first start here at htc dev and unlock the bootloader and when thats done install a custom recovery like 4ext and then install the su file and now your ready to flash a custom rom now thats done look in the dev section for downgrading your hboot from 1.50 to 1.49.0007 and now your ready for alpharevolutionary.io and when thats done you have s off and your hboot will be 1.49.1107

For those who are helpers with only the Sprint or GSM 3D, please ignore this post.
I repeat, this is about the Virgin Mobile Evo V 4G, if you know nothing about it, please don't try to help, you'll waste both of our time.
So let me begin, I'm going to root my Evo V 4G. But I've noticed quite a lot of things that tell you to do things with that tell you to downgrade the S-Off. Wonderful. But to downgrade, they say you should be unrooted, and locked.
So I have a couple of questions. First off, "What is S-Off and HBoot and all that."
Second, is there a point to downgrading the HBoot (because I believe it is a higher version on the V 4G).
And third, should I root it first, or do the HBoot downgrade, or both?
(And yes I understand I'm a noob, but coming from the Motorola Triumph, all you had to do was use Terminal Emulator to root, and then get a custom recovery and you were good.)
Please explain, from one dev to a noob. Thank you very much.
First off I'm no developer, but I've dealt enough w/ HTC phones to know most of what you ask. I could be mistaken a bit but from my understanding here is what you are asking about:
S-Off/S-On is basically a setting that tells the bootloader (HBOOT) if it should verify the stuff it is flashing has been signed by HTC.
HBOOT is the bootloader for HTC phones, it is responsible for booting the ROM or Recovery, it's also used for fastboot commands.
Downgrading your HBOOT may be necessary in order to get true S-OFF
an example would be the Evo 3D HBOOT 1.4 can be S-OFF'd with revolutionary (maintaining your warranty and giving true S-OFF), but 1.5 needs the HTC Dev Unlock method which doesn't give true S-OFF but allows flashing of some unsigned content. In this instance it's better to downgrade your HBOOT and get a real S-OFF.
As for which to do first, if S-OFF can be gotten on your current HBOOT version, I dont see a need to downgrade it at all. If you HAVE TO downgrade I'd do that first, get S-OFF then flash a recovery and rom that has root access already.
Anyone who reads this and sees a mistake, please correct it

Hi All,
so i have an EVO 4G LTE with HBOOT 1.12, SW v1.13.651.1 710RD.
i just rooted the device using ZEDOMAX script, and i've been reading but i need a confirmation from someone that's been more active than me with an EVO 4G LTE. As of today, there is no S-OFF method that doesnt use the HTCDEV ?
i'm trying to unlock the bootloader without having to use the HTCDEV. I got as far as lazypanda but apparently they've replaced it with DIRTY RACUN and that requires HTCDEV as well. So is there any way to acquire S-OFF without using HTCDEV. Thanks in advance.
Although I'm not familiar with that root method, you should already be HTC Dev unlocked if you're rooted.
Getting S-off doesn't require HTC Dev, either (at least with Lazy Panda).

AFAIK there's no way to gain s-off without HTC unlock.
More importantly why is HTC ulock something to worry about . If your worried about your HTC warranty more than gaining s-off I would reccomend not rooting your phone at all

I'm aware it's not there because it is no longer supported by Team Unlimited.

Hey I saw this posted on a thread for the lazy panda.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/z7kle6swa793exb/S-Off Feed the Panda (HBOOT 1.12).zip
Hi All.
I recently received a replacement phone from sprint. The phone is on:
hboot: 1.15
version: 1.22.651.3 710RD
Now, is there method to downgrade to hboot 1.12 without using htcdev.com to unlock bootloader?
Please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Why are you wanting to downgrade your bootloader?

Hi FinZ28,
thanks for your input. the reason why hboot 1.12 because as far as i know is the only one that can allow me to S-OFF without using the htc dev method, correct me if im wrong.
Now if there is a method to obtain S-off on 1.15 without using HTC DEV to unlock bootlader please let me know.
Thanks again.
The only way to downgrade is by using the toolkit in the link I posted previously, however, you must be HTC Dev unlocked to use it. To gain S-off you will need to unlock with HTC Dev & then gain S-off via Facepalm or Dirty Racun.
If you're wanting to downgrade for the purpose of using Lazy Panda, keep in mind that it's no longer supported and if you get in a tight spot trying to use it, you may have trouble getting help, particularly from Team Unlimited.
Also, I'm fairly certain that Lazy Panda required an unlocked bootloader. There is an exploit for the One that allows you to gain S-off without unlocking, but not for the EVO LTE.

Every S-OFF exploit for the Evo LTE requires you to be HTC-Dev unlocked

Yeah I'm pretty much out of Luck since it seems impossible right now to revert without using HTC Dev. I guess is time to upgrade.
Thanks for your input guys, I appreciate it.
I dug up the Lazy Panda thread and yes, @torankusu was correct. Lazy Panda will work on a locked bootloader. I used it when I first got my phone over a year ago when it was still supported but I was already dev unlocked. Still, though, there is no way to downgrade to Hboot 1.12 without unlocking the bootloader.
