[Q] Video Overlay issues - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I'm running the Liquid Jellybean Rom, and I have an issue where whenever I play a video it will overlap everythng else around it. Is there a workaround to this?

Do you mean that the video sits over all the controls? If that's the case and are running a custom rom, go into the developer options and check the disable hw overlay. That should fix your problem. Or at least it did for me

Thank you so very much, that did the trick.
If I may, what does the HW overlay do?

If I read the info right, the hardware overlay is a secondary processing method that makes sure that there aren't any graphical collisions with displayed data. By disabling it, it forces the OS to continuously check to make sure there isn't any memory collisions. The downfall is, by disabling hw overlay it forces the CPU to perform double duty slowing the phone down and consuming additional battery power (not when the phone is idle because nothing is displayed)
Thankfully, we have great hardware and awesome devs where disabling doesn't noticeably impact our phone, but just imagine how much faster it could be if the hw overlay was properly utilized.
Lastly, any time you reboot your phone, you'll have to recheck the box.

I'm running CM10.0 Stable and i'm having the problem where the video sits over the controls with camera apps. I have gone in and made sure that "disable hw overlay" is checked, rebooted, but am still experencing the same difficulty. is there anything else you guys think i could try?
Thank you!

disabling hw overlays does not stick after a reboot, there is an app in the market that forces it to stay but i forget what it is, maybe someone else can chime in with that, until then just disable hw overlays and dont reboot

The app Jamie's talking about are tasker and secure settings both are paid apps but worth it. With these apps one of the things you can do is disable hw overlays on boot very handy. I use this combo on every ROM I'm on.

I was hoping for a set it and forget it type of app instead of something that runs in the background. Is there a build.prop tweak for this?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

I wanna say yes and no I remember there was some line you could change in the build prop that would help with flickers in the ICS and early jb days. I think it was maxcomp or something like that and you change it from a three or two or vice versa if I also remember correctly it did something to your screen as well. But I'm not a hundred so research first or maybe some one can shed more light on this.

[Q] How to disable the lockscreen sound?

There is an extremely annoying sound/notification that plays sometimes when I unlock the lock screen. I've looked in the settings and can not seem to find anything to turn this off. Anyone point me in the right direction here?

Thanks for the reply but I've already checked that and it's unchecked in there. I've tried checking it then unchecking but no matter what the dam sound remains.

Yep, I've tried turning it on and restarting the phone. Then turning it back off and restarting. Also did those steps and pulled the battery. Got frustrated and just reset the phone and still no change. It's weird too because if I simply flick to unlock the screen it doesn't play the sound as often. If I take my time and slide the unlock screen and slowly release the touch then it almost always makes the sound.
Guess I can just live with it till I can through another ROM on it. Probably just an isolated issue within my Sense.

Sorry to bump this up but it's seriously annoying and I'd rather not take the phone in for exchange.
Has anyone else had this issue or anything even remotely like it? Any other suggestions, etc? I appreciate any help offerings in advance.
The only help I can offer is disabling the Lockscreen all together. At least until we get full root and you can just flash a ROM or figure out what the problem is. Screen Mode Widget (free in the market) will do that

Has anyone figured this out? It's extremely annoying. It happens every time I unlock the phone.
The lock screen sound setting someone else mentioned in this thread is an additional little beep that gets added on if you have the sound option checked. This noise is completely different and plays regardless of whether or not you have the option checked, or whether or not you have a lockscreen pattern.

Maybe if you gave us a little more information as to what "issues" your having, someone can try to replicate them.
The issue im having is the following ever since the last update came out for this app about 3 days ago.
If I click on the video I want to see and it will show for a second and then the screen goes black. As if the screen times out. So then I have to click the power button to turn the screen on and see that the video is still running yet I only see it for about a second again before I'm kicked out and again screen goes black and I press the power button and unlock the screen again and after that hope the video is almost over or have to turn off the phone because it wont let me do nothing unless the video is done. Not even the captive buttons respond once the video is running. It's almost as if it was a force close but the thing is still running. Also I have tried same videos on the stock player and double twist and they play just fine no issues.
I have since removed the app till I hear from developer or see that the app has been updated. It's also a shame because I had just come put with a Pro version and was willing to buy but wanted to see what the update did before purchasing it.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA Premium App
The issue is absent in my experience. It seems to work fine. My phone is rooted though, that might have something to do with the permissions needed to keep the screen active; but i doubt it.
I assume you have the correct codec installed.
Maybe there is a glitch only when updating... I installed mine after the update so it was a clean install.
Are you streaming or playing the videos locally?

I'm using the right codec and the video is local on the 2 SD card those same videos worked fine before the update. Also I did try removing both app and codec and then redownloading to same old story of it not working. I do want to point out I'm not rooted ... But don't see how that would have anything to do if it use to work right before the last update...

I replied to him telling yes that I downloaded a Brightness Toggle Widget and had it said to 0% and after I got his email re DL the app and codec and now it's back to normal
Anyways i want to thank the dev of the app and anyone that try to help out. Also hope this helped anyone and let's support great apps like this one and many more with great developers that reply back and don't just see you as a quick $.

SmartSync disabler?

I know there was just a thread about this that went bad pretty quick....
But I've been having the same thing happen with my data (4g) disabling at night and it's starting to bug me...I've tried the advanced settings app (disabling data sleep management) and that didn't work. The free version of the SmartSync disabler app is gone. Does anyone know if any other ways to fix this without using script? Thanks for your time.

You could try this. The disabler seems to work on Rezound, mostly. Wi-fi didn't automatically switch over for me from one SSID to another when I changed location - but I've only done that once since installing it, so can't blame it yet. You install it, enable it, then reboot to make it effective. I read one report that rebooting again disables it, I haven't tried to see if that's true on the Rezound. I've also heard that if you leave the phone plugged into the charger you won't have the problems "SmartSync" causes, not sure, but makes sense since it's meant to save battery (if I wanted to save battery by having the Rezound not work, I'd just turn the damn thing off!).
Please fill out the web form (why do companies call this email?) at HTC and let them know that their unilateral decision that none of their customers need reliable, timely email and messaging from midnight until 7 AM is unacceptable, and breaks core functionality.
I think that alternate app is just for WiFi...I don't use WiFi often. I did write a little bit of a rant to HTC though, thanks for the link.

Google really should enable this by default now. Pretty much every app works fine with it on.
Does this increase battery drain ?

That's because pretty much every app is already using GPU acceleration. So for those apps, checking the box does nothing.
But for apps that do not use GPU acceleration (because the developer is too lazy to code properly) it can help. Some apps are written so badly, that they will actually break when forcing GPU rendering. Which is why it isn't checked by default.

Technically it should reduce battery drain, as the GPU would consume less power to do the same graphical task than the CPU (since the GPU is actually made for it).

Adobe Reader and evernote are the applications where forcing GPU acceleration made a huge difference for me.
Without it, big PDFs were extremely choppy, scrolling pages and zoom was a pain, after that, everything ran extremely fluid.
I kinda suspect it's because some changes must have been made in the way android used to force GPU acceleration form 4.0, and now, in those applications forced is not as default.
You know you guys now have to run some sort of benchmark tests or post a short video showing GPU-on and GPU-off performance!
Is there any kind of negative effect of doing this?
I've noticed it a few times and thought of doing it, but figured if it was the best option then it would be on by default.
There must be a reason it is disabled? Battery? Compatibility? Kittens dying?

I think it's called "Force GPU Rendering" in dev settings. I enabled it and tested on an app that usually scrolls choppy and slow. I noticed smooth and fast scrolling after enabling.
It is not enabled by default because Google cannot guarantee compatibility with all apps. Apps that make heavy use of custom widgets *may* have rendering issues. It is something that app developers should opt-in for but often the developers do not, despite there being no issues. 98% of apps work great with it forced on.
It shouldn't cause reboots or the like unless a particular app that isn't compatible somehow crashes the kernel(not likely). *If* it causes an issue with an app then usually it will not render 100% correctly or at worst it will force close.

[HOW TO] Enable soft keys on Droid DNA CM10.1

THIS INCLUDES MODIFYING BUILD.PROP AND SYNAPTICS-RMI-TOUCHSCREEN.KL SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUPS!!
I thought i might share this to everyone since i tested it and it works nicely for me so far
1) Go to your build.prop using root explorer or any app that allows access to system files
2) Go to the bottom of the file, and enter the following without the quotes "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP IN CASE SOMETHING DOESNT WORK OUT)
3) Find "Synaptics-rmi-touchscreen.kl" located at (system>usr>keylayout) that controls the capacitive keys. Delete everything by editing it with a text editor
4) Reboot and you should have softkeys with the capacitive ones disabled
*I used this app http://goo.gl/JUWqs to disable the capacitive lights*
**If you wish to kepp the capacitive keys enabled skip step 3**
**to Reverse this just replace the build.prop with your backup and replace your Synaptics-rmi-touchscreen.kl with your backup**
Enjoy
This would be great in conjunction with enabling some gestures in the capacitive area a la WebOS

Okay, so on any jelly bean device with soft keys, pushing up from the home soft key brings up a little ring with google now on it. Is there any way to enable this functionality with the hardware keys? It's kind of weird having both hardware and soft keys but I really like this functionality.
Any way to shrink the height of the nav bar? It's a bit too tall for my liking.
