Hi
I've tried to root, XPERIA NEO with ISC 4.0.4 update. I've tried, every tutorial here, every exploit, zergRushes, Flashtool attempts. But it's not giving it up.
I tried the suggested tutorial, on xperia mini it was rooted with no problem
I've restored the NEOs 2.3.4 stock gingerbread via flashtool, tried GignerBreak, no luck. Is it possible that this phone to be unrootable. Please tell some suggestions, what to do.
Thanks
build .42 is directly rootable via zergrush, while build .62 is not directly rootable. though there is tutorial in general section, on how to get rooted .62

I'm just wondering, how come you didn't notice sticky thread in general section, which is for rooting ICS rom.
I really don't understand how come people don't see sticky thread
If someone can explain that to me..

One way to miss it is to access the forum via phone app, since the stickies are in another tab.
However, we both know that the more likely reason is because people dont bother looking, or searching.

Thats, what I am telling, I did, step by step, the instructions for rooting the 4.0 stock rom. Impossible. zergrush is only telling missing directory, permission denied, reboot the phone several times, nothing happens. I did everything as it is told there.
I've tried the sticky notes first. And many more after. I wouldn't downgrading, otherwise

This is the threat I followed. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26798415&postcount=141
And the tool I used is DooMLoRD_v1_Xperia-2011-ICS-ROOT-emu-busybox-su
Same result as zergRush, permission denied, can't write and so on...
Edit: I've tried with this tool firs, before the zergs
You didn't say you tried that before, all you talked about was zergrush..
And have you followed all steps? Flashed 562 kernel?
Usb debuging turned on?
Allow unknown sources?
Still cant get to root my damn phone!!!
Hey guys. I'm scratching my head to soon be bald here... Got the Neo build 62, ginger 2.3.4. And tried ****load of stuf.. But nothing works.. Got it rooted on earlier build but wont work when i upgraded to what i got now.
And some people in here give links west, east,up and dow. My head is just spinning from it all..
Isn't there a noob guide without all the flashy colors and just a straight step by step way to root my phone so i can get my cyanogenmod???
Whats wrong in flashy colors if they get you where you wanna be?
Anw if you plan on using CM instead of stock, then you can be on 42 rooted, no need to mess with 62.

Sorry for the missunderstanding, because they look the same, thats why I mentioned the zergRush. Sorry.
I made everything by the book, but I had problems with the flashing too. I supose flashing must be done with flash tool. I've downloaded and installed the recomended driver, but when I try to flash the kernel, I recieve red text that said, Flash Aborted, System is not functioning or somthing like that. When I flashed the 2.3.4 version, there was no problem. But I tried your tutorial several times, before downgradin, same result. So I will downgrade to build .42 I will try to root it there, if success, I am planning, to flash the kernel, and to install, JB custom rom. I suppose it will workd this way. What do you think?
About the second part, i've activated USB Debugging, Unknown Sources, and in Settings > Xperia > connectivity > USB connection mode set it to MSC mode, after I've tried with the default connection tipe. No luck.
It could work if you come from .42, but I wouldn't be surprised if some errors start coming out.
Can you post log of flashing .562 kernel?
And one question, you say you will flash custom kernel. That means your bootloader is unlocked??

No my bootloader is still locked. I tried to root it when locked, but if I fail with 42 root, I will unlock it because 2.3.4 buld 42 I think is not an option to stay on. So what you suppose, to flash back 4.0.4, to unlock the bootloader and to root it. Or to root it firs in 42 and to unlock the bootloader. Because I saw somewhere that is not good to unlock befor root. It's not my phone and I am doing it carefull, that why I am asking so many questions.
Tonight I lill post the flashtool log.
You can unlock your bootloader on whatever fw you are. It doesn't matter.
Only thing that matter is that your phone isn't SIM locked and if you gonna use unofficial method with test point, it need to be older than 12W14(which can be found under battery)
Not sure that problems you had while flashing kernel, but I root-ed it with my instructions multiple times.
The 7z version ov 2.3.4 build 42 can't be recognized by FlashTool. And please could you point me to post how to unlock the bootloader
thanks.
Can I use FlashTool, Plugins -> Unlock bootloader -> run
Lol, extract .7z file there should be .ftf file inside 7z.
and instructions about bootloader can be found in sticky thread in neo v dev section.
Sticky thread are sticky for a reason, read them before you start messing with you phone.

Root successful, via your tutorial for 4.0.4, I've flashed back to 4.0.4 431 update and this time everything was by the book.
About the 7z, I've extracted the tft, I am not so lame, but flashtool is all gray when I select the tft. Anyway is not an issue any more,
About the sticky trat remark, I not messing, before I am sure what I am doing. That's why I am asking. Thanks
When i was rooting my phone i unlocked bootloader and after that i was able to flash any rom using flashtool. Just needed drivers for flashtool and fastboot but all info founded here on xda or on other pages..

OK. I'm also a noob, but I rooted my xperia s (with locked Bootloader) last week with this solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754429
If you read through the first post completly you will find the following phrase:
"Guide:
Before you root your device, your device must running Gingerbread. Flash it back to Gingerbread if your device are running Ice Cream Sandwich Open Run.dat and it will lead you through the process"
If you are on ICS you have to flash black to Gingerbread with Flashtool. Here the link to the Flashtool thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588586
And here the link to the xperia s firmware thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599303
There is no simple root-method at the moment, perhaps later, I don't know. Keep in mind: This is a new device and the development of a dedicated root-method keeps a lot of time. Please take a look at other threads and read through. Collect as much information as possible.

I had done that. When using the flashtool I had kept that option checked but when I did successfully (no errors messages in flashtool) flashed and downgraded to GB from ICS, I was not able to download any apps from play store. I was also unable to login into google chat. I was able to use my gmail app without any issues though. Is this normal?
I did xda and google search on this issue about not being able to login to google chat etc, almost 90% of them said that you have to remove your primary google account which is not possible to do unless you root or do a factory reset.

NO, you will have to downgrade to root, or you unlock the bootloader and flash a prerooted kernel, but bootloader unlocking is only for rom testers or people who like to experience custom roms, so think of it, because it voids warranty. For a how to look in my signature

at least as of this point in time, this is the only way to root ICS on ST15i and yes, you do have to downgrade to GB in order to accomplish this. no other known method unless you wanna unlock bootloader and try out a custom ROM
with regard to the other method you found of changing kernels, you cannot do that unless you have an unlocked bootloader as you cannot flash kernel with a locked bootloader...
Hello,
I'm new to this forum and to rooting. I currently have a SE Neo (MT15i) with ICS 4.0.4 (4.1.B.0.431 or something close). I have unlocked my bootloader, i have installed fastboot, flashmode whatever. I want to root my phone, which program should I use and how do I do it? I have no idea what kernel is, what roms are etc...? Can you please tell me what they are? Thanks!
Update: I went on several threads such as the guide in the Neo V Dev, it was old, I'm not sure if it would work on my version right now.
I also went on Doomlord's kit which was about rooting a .562.
EDIT: After so much researching, I found out that my device is just NEO not NEO V

2. copy rootxperia.zip and Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip to sd card
3. Fastboot recoveryneo.img
4. Flash the above 2 files
4. flash .431 kernel
search for the zip,img and kernel in this forum , you will get it.
i hope u know how to fast boot, else search in this forum.

Depends which build of Android is on your phone - some can be directly rooted using Doomlord's method, others demand that you flash a rootable kernel, root it and then reflash the latest kernel.
If your build is not directly rootable you'll need to install flashtools (and any other stuff required to make flashtools work), download a rootable kernel and download the kernel for the build you are currently using.
If you're handy with command line stuff you can do all of this using the android debugging bridge (ADB) instead of flashtools.
For safety's sake you should probably have a copy of your latest build in the ftf format - so you can go back to stock at any time.
Similarly, when I rooted there was a PC program called SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) - might be called SUS now that they've dropped Ericsson I guess. Anyway if you have soft bricked your phone SUS or SUES, can revert it to a stock build for you really easily if you feel a bit overwhelmed by any of the above.
If you're not too fussed about your warranty AND you're allowed to unlock your bootloader - just do that instead - makes changing roms a lot less of a hassle AND it allows you to install custom kernels.
It's all very straightforward - just do your research (google "root xperia ray build number" and you'll get thorough instructions. If you get stuck at a specific point, that's the time to start asking questions.

Good work having a real go at it yourself, but honestly, make life easy for yourself & use the guide in the thread stickied near the top of Q&A. You'll have it done in minutes.

that's my problem, that thread dosnt tell me which one i need, or where to get it. i've looked at dozens of guides and cant find one that help me. the only thing that i seem to have a problem with is which one i should use, because i cant find the XWKF4 one.
Because you're running ancient GB firmware, update your firmware to ICS or JB first, then root. Instructions/links in that same thread.

that tool said that i dont have permission, which means its not rooted? why do i need a rooted device to root it? or im missing something? i did every step on that too...
edit: i had old version. but cant find new one (4.0.3) for SGS2, only xperia
I cant remember if Spockys tool needs to be used with rooted ICS or higher.
But if your planning on doing other things with your phone, youd be better starting off where Mistahbungle said(ICS).
Then you just root that and unlock. You read about using pc odin and get the ICS rom from sammobile. Then just flash a rooted siyah kernel,or something similar.
