Hi there everyone. Was just looking up guides and tutorials on unlocking my tf201.
I went to the asus website to download the unlock tool http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=20&m=Eee+Pad+Transformer+Prime+TF201&hashedid=FqCKMQDqgvSncfFM
And I noticed it says: Unlock Device Boot Loader (only works with tf201 ICS OS)
So my question is: Do I have to wait for asus to update their bootloader? or what do you guys recommend I'd do?
Thanks in Advance.

Hey, first of all pls check, if you have a serial number:
Settings->About Tablet -> Status
if S/N is empty, your device doesnt know its S/N. you can add it manually with a tool called "ratchet",
here are the instructions: http://androidroot.mobi/2012/01/31/introducing-ratchet-the-unknown-serial-fix/
credits to the author.
(you find your serial number on a sticker on the bottom of your tablet, or on the package in which it was shipped..)
After that, when you can see your S/N in Settings->About Tablet -> Status, you can try again.
if this fails to, you can try the following:
Some users reported, that they where able to unlock, after a factory reset. but remember: you loose root with factory reset and there is no root-method atm for JB.
If all the stuff didnt work: you are one of the "lucky" guys: there will be no unlock for your device and asus refuses support. (you are not alone, me and many others are with you)
atm there is an official asus employee named Tien, who is trying to help us. no success so far, but lets hope..

I haven't used CM10 since the early Craig builds, but reading around it looks like at least one version of CM10 here in the development area doesn't use the newer JB bootloader so if you had already upgraded ota to JB then you have the latest JB bootloader and CM10 won't work unless you use one that has been built based on the new bootloader.
In my opinion, don't get hung up on thinking CM10 is the end all be all for our Primes. Either Craigs stock JB Rom or Hairybean 1.3 give a very nice JB experience with lots of tweaks.
Good luck

I first saw this behaviour about 2 weeks ago. I think you get this situation if you go direct to the download page/tab. If you navigate off the download page to another page on the site and then return (not by using the browser's back button but using links on the page) you find the drop down list is populated.

Hey there, im an tired to death of waiting for this 2.1 update for my phone, and so tried to install a custom ROM last night, I have searched and read so many tutorials on how to Root the phone etc, and install a custom ROM, but i seem to be stuck... im Running 1.5.. First off i am following this tutorial androidforums.com/all-things-root-hero/54802-how-root-install-custom-rom-backup-more.html which seemed to be the most upto date and relevant.
I think i have Rooted my phone using Instant Root
And what im stuck on is running FlashRec.apk It Just refuses to work (backup), so im stuck, i cant get passed this stage
I heave read something about GoldCard? or something, is this another method?
And i have come across more threads about using the SDK on windows somehow...

As far as i'm aware if flashrec doesn't work you need to downgrade, try my guide in my sig for details.
Thats what i thought :/ I don't get it, i haven't installed a single update, and im on 1.5, and i got the phone when it first came out in the UK, so it wouldn't have been updated, unless over the air updates are automatically downloaded and installed without my knowledge or approval?

As you have found out those phones that have network specific ROMS, namely from the carriers named above will find it difficult or impossible to Root using the methods those with non-branded Hero's have.
The only way to install a custom ROM and or root the phone is the following method. As I have had no experiance with this method I am not going to be able to write out any instrcutions of my own, nor am I going to copy and paste someone else's work and take credit for it. Therefore I am providing you with the following link.

I hadnt installed any updates either but i still had to downgrade, and your tutorial worked pefectly
All newish G2 Touches are loaded with a more recent update (although they're still all 1.5.)
This means if you have a new G2 Touch you'll need to downgrade.
I had the exact same issue as you with the backups failing, after searching the internet and using multiple tabs, i finally gained root access, to make life easier for others I created a guide, give it a try, let me know how you get on

Rooting & sim unlocking are totally unrelated. There's no free means to unlock, so you'll have to buy a code.
Is there a way to root the tf201 running stock JB while keeping it's bootloader locked ?
I have tried running over all the threads here to find an answer and it seems to me that all methods to root the tablet requires flashing of a new boot loader..
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda app-developers app
There is a serious aversion to searching on this board even a cursory browsing of all the forums would yield the answer because it is asked every day.
In short, NO, not without unlocking.
Thank you for the reply..
The main issue I have with unlocking the bootloader is that i will not be able to get future updates from asus.. Maybe there is a method to get rooted by unlocking and maintaining the original bootloader?
Really have to get rid of all the junk asus preinstalled on the device :\

Root and recovery are not really related..
If you are running the stock recovery you should be able to use ASUS apk to unlock it.. Then you can flash your custom recovery and change to whatever rom you like, just make sure you are flashing a JB ROM.
I am running the stock recovery and stock JB.
Every time I enter the input the info in the stock ASUS unlock apk it fails. I have read several places that it only works on ICS and that ASUS turned it off anyway. (although I haven't tried it in a week or so since everyone seems to think it doesn't work at all anymore; I will try it tonight)
Or is there a hacked ASUS apk that will unlock on JB and/or without talking to the ASUS server?

I unlocked mine on JB just a few days ago. The tool still works with JB (the notice on the site is outdated).
Some people have noticed that some primes (especially ones that have been repaired) don't want to unlock for some reason.
There is no way to unlock other than the official tool.

The reason the unlock fails is because the serial number is not showing up in ASUS DB to provide the unlock code. The unlocker communicates with ASUS to get an unlock key for each serial number and if your not in their DB well.... No unlock for you.
I did verify the sticker matches the digital serial number. I had hoped they would be different so I could update the digital one.
Anyone have a good contact at ASUS that would check/update their database?
The emails I have had with them so far have not been very helpful.
Edit:
I wonder if I change my digital serial number to one that someone else has already used to unlock will it send the unlock code for that serial number to me? And would it work? Or would I brick my Prime?

So long story short, I bought a prime off of someone on swappa. It's in great condition and works great, but I have the flashing bug. Normally I'd just start with the usual guides to root and flash, but the device came rooted and with a custom ROM. I know these primes are touchy and don't want to end up with a brick. So here's my current setup, can anyone point me where to go next. My Google fu seems to be weak because I haven't been able to find what I should do.
He used nvflash and I have the files if I need to perform a repair from a brick (his words)
During boot it displays 9.4.2.28 r01 and the tegra logo is in he center of bottom
Twrp 2.3.3.8 is installed
Baked blackbean 6 is installed
Build is JZO54K
Kernel is 2.6.39.4-baked-g94e883f
I think I'm on the ICS bootloader from the posts I've read but didn't see a thread detailing the upgrade process to get to jellybean. Do I need to upgrade to use the current roms?
Thoughts, comments, concerns?

One note future searches, If you don't already have the TF201 drivers downloaded and installed, you'll need to do a google search for "TF201 fastboot drivers" and it'll be the first or second link. You'll need to do this if the device comes up in your device manager with an exclamation point and has no idea what it is. If you get hung up on <waiting for device> it's probably a driver issue.
Hello XDA members.
I am an iOS user who recently started using my Asus Transformer tf-201 which was gifted.
I know quite a bit on unlocking and jailbreaking an iPhone but Android is very new to me.
Before i ask you guys for help, i have searched the forum quite a bit to understand the complexities of Unlocking and Rooting. So please go easy on me
My tf-201 is running build number JRO03C.WW_epad-10.4.2.18-20121122
I want to root my device without bricking. So how do i do it?
The forum has a lot of bits and pieces of information so its really hard for me to step further
Can anybody assist me to root my ft-201?
Many people have said you need to Unlock but the unlock tool on Asus website is not for the firmware i am using.
If in case i can unlock, post that how should i go about?
Which firmware should i install?
If incase Asus releases new firmware can i update it?
Unlocked
Waiting for some desperate help and getting none, i went ahead and unlocked my tf201.
Now how should i go about? NVFlash?
I want to root my device

since you are already on the jellybean bootloader and unlocked you can not do nvflash but dont worry about that whats done is done. there is no known method of rooting the prime once upgraded to jellybean without unlocking. the most important thing to prevent bricks is that you know not to ever install CWM because its not supported and dont install TWRP recovery for ICS because you are past that now. This leaves you basically one option if you want to root. you need to install TWRP for Jellybean and then install a pre rooted rom. I obviously suggest http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674827 because it is the fastest and smoothest rom.

The alterations to the ui bits as you call them in androwook rom are options in the aroma installer. there are none that are mandatory. anyway I dont know what is in the urkle rom. the important part is the use of the clemsyn kernel. It by and large solves the IO issues that cause lags in the prime. The clemsyn kernel is only for stock based roms.
if you want it bare try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911024
I'm on STOCK 10.4.2.18

Because of the MAC-address-mismatch I was unable to unlock my TF201 using the ASUS unlock-tool. My prime was updated from 9.4.x by Wistron (ASUS-partner) up to STOCK 10.4.2.18 during a RMA without asking. Now ASUS accepted that their partner made a mistake by updating the prime to a (for me) unusable firmware. They told me to RMA the prime back to let them do the unlock for me (for free - thanks to the great ASUS-customer support).
Do you know which version of TWRP I can use as soon as I've installed the "HB-4.2.1-bootloader & recovery"?
The lowest version I ever can use from now on (f.e.) is the one inside the "Downgrade Hairybean 4.1.1 Bootloader & Recovery.zip"-package?
Would it be possible to install the nightly CyanogenMOD-10 onto my tablet? (I think they still are using CWM)
[EDIT]
CM10 and CM10.1 (unofficial) are using TWRP too...
CM10 uses ICS-TWRP so that I think I can't use CM10!
[/EDIT]
The reason why I'm asking about installing CM10 is that I want to try some firmwares and (thanks to Wistron) I am a bit confused and don't want to brick my tablet.
Thanks in advance & regards,
Roy
How can I unlock the bootloader on 10.4.2.18??
Hi guys. I have been searching around for a few days on how to unlock my bootloader. the asus site has a tool for ics, and i am on jb already. I just cant stand the stock rom, and really wanna try custom stuff, as my phone is on cm10.1 and my old one was on cm10. Called asus to ask if there is something im missing and the tech guy said dont unlock, cause it voids warranty..duhh...lolz...anyway, would really appreciate if someone could enlighten me on how to unlock and root as im already on stock 4.1.1, and my prime is still a virgin.....thanks
I used this method my prime was on software 10.4.2.17 and it worked fine for me. The ICS unlock tool worked fine and I was on jelly bean bootloader

Did you RMA your TF201 before? I did because of WLAN-problems. They changed the WLAN-board so that the MAC-address of this board didn't fit to the rest of the device anymore (ASUS.TW-hq-support told me so). Because of this tablet-ID/MAC-address-mismatch the unlock wouldn't succeed. I always received the well known "network error bla-bla" message using the ASUS-unlock-tool. MAYBE unlocking could work as soon as you are able to change/spoof the MAC-address of the WLAN-board.
I had to RMA it back again to let them change the MAC-address so that I was able to unlock the tablet without any problems. But pay attention - I've heard that sometimes ASUS wants some cash for doing this job (~ 100 Euro + transportation). I was "lucky" because the WLAN-port again was broken and I pleased ASUS to also change the MAC so that it fits to the rest of the board.
Good luck & regards,
Roy

I have the same question.
I want to install the TWRP 2.5 and i read that if you load the wrong bootloader version of twrp you could permabrick the tf201....
Haw can i determine my bootloader version?
By now I'm on cm10 nightly rom...
I already found the answer after much searching and am already rooted and on a custom rom.
If the Nvdia logo at bootup is at the bottom right of the screen, you are on Jelly bean bootloader. Else, if it is below the Asus logo, it is ICS.
Hope this helps.

If you have the ICS bootloader still then do the nvflash process first. It can only be done while on ICS and will make you brick proof.
Once you upgrade you can never do it again.

turns out I was running 4.1.1 the whole time. I must have been hallucinating or something or maybe there was a glitch because my dmclient keeps crashing. How do I unroot, though?

I had the same problemas you. I RMA'ed my tablet for something and when it came back the unlock tool would not work not matter what. It gave me that same error: "unknow error occurs which may be a network issue. please wait and try again later."
I couldn't figure out why it was not working except that some poeple who RMA'ed could not get it work. Your explanation makes sense. Now I need to find a solution. Do you have any idea it is possible to change the MAC address without sending it back in? My warranty has run out anyway. I did acheive root with the new motochopper method. But this will not allow me to get TWRP or other custom recovery (meaning I cannot change the rom - which is what I really want to do) until I have unlocked the bootloader.
I hate how slow this device is with stock rom. I know it is capable of so much more. Anyway, If you have any ideas how to get this Mac Address and ID to match with root but locked bootloader I would love to hear.
