I thought this was pretty cool, read it over on Gizmodo. Its really easy to do.
1. Install Dropbox on your computer and your phone
2. Download APK files from a website like xda
3. Drag and drop APK files into your Dropbox folder
4. Open Dropbox app on phone and navigate to APK files
5. Click on APK file file, file will download and ask to install
6. Install file
Read it on gizmodo as well, tried it for the first time today, wicked easy.
I've been doing on my G1 and now I do it this on my Vibrant. I love Dropbox.
I use Belvedere to automatically move anything with the .APK extension to my dropbox/Android/APK folder. Couldn't be easier.
Can we move Avatar to Dropbox (below 2GB) and delete it off the card? I mean, yes.. I know THAT can be done, but I was curious if this broke some patent or anything?
I am BRAND new to Dropbox (not even on the PC yet).
I'm a fan of this:
http://labs.dashwire.com/drop
awesome drop is nice moving a file from your pc to your phone... but it's a little limited in that's the only flow.
What if you want to share a file on your phone? I'd like to upload it to dropbox and share it that way...

Yes you can move it there but if you want to watch it you would have to download it back to the phone every time you want to watch it. Dropbox can't stream the movie if thats what you were trying to do, dropbox is used for online storage.
There's an app called WebSharing that works over Wifi. It runs a web server on the phone which you can access from any computer and allows you to upload/download and move files around on the phone. It's pretty cool, check it out.
Is there a way to create a dropbox folder on the sd or internal memory and keep it synced with dropbox? Currently I have to download the pdf files that I store on my drop each time I want to view them, sometimes im not connected online.

I don't believe there is an offline mode. You can download the files the ln use file manager to copy them to a different folder for later but the initial time you need web.

Yep I use it everyday love it WebSharing bought and paid for no need for dropbox here I'm never really installing apk's anywhere but home. Plus if i'm not at home I just download it to the phone and it handles the rest.
Tried searching but didnt come up with much.
ANyone ever use dropbox?
I was thinking of trying it just to make things easier when want to put music, movie or book onto my gtab or phone.
Just wondering if it works with gtablet and how well it does. Like will it take an hour to get a 100mb file onto gtab etc..
Thanks for any info you can offer

How long a file takes to transfer usually (almost always) depends on your internet connection speed. Since the GTAB is WIFI only, you would think that it would be on a decent ISP. I have beed using Dropbox for months now on both my EVO and my GTAB and it works spectacular.
Side note:
Dropbox is free, why not just try it? Only takes minutes to install and try.
It works like any android phone.

+1 Works awesome! I load anything I need in my DropBox and is available anytime I need it on my Laptop, GTab or HTC Inspire 4G. You can also share to anyone, anywhere. Great app!

It's no slower on the gtab.
Remember with dropbox that everything goes "thru the cloud" - so if you want to copy a file from computer to gtab, and the two are 1' apart, sending the file to dropbox (limited by your broadband upload speed) and then copying it down from dropbox to your gtab (limited by your broadband download speed) is going to be a lot slower than using local networking, or direct USB mounting, or a USB memory stick.
Dropbox is often slower than my 45mbit connection at work, and even slower than my 12mbit connection at home. It seems to download for me at about 250-400kb/sec, or about 6-7 minutes to transfer a 100MB file.
Dropbox is great, but if your looking for automatic file sync then SugarSync is far superior. You can selectively sync files between a computer and android device, so the downloads happen automatically. Also if your looking to play video files on the Gtab, google docs now streams uploaded video files in a youtube style player, which works very well on the Gtab

That is mostly correct. Dropbox uses md5 checksums when you upload a file to see if it already has it in its database. If it does, it automatically shows it as in your dropbox and it is ready to download instantly. They do this so they save space.

Hey guys!
As i'm sure most of you are aware you can get a 50GB free box account with your touchpad. But you can easily create MULTIPLE accounts by simply logging out in the app and creating a new account. Then you have 100GB free over 2 accounts!
You can add both or more box accounts to your touchpad accounts anyway
Just thought I'd share
Is there any kind of desktop sync software, like what Dropbox gives you? If not, maybe I'll just use Box as long-term storage for things I'm not using regularly. Clever idea about the multiple accounts by the way

Box.net don't provide one without changing your subscription to a paid one. But software such as Gladinet will allow you to mount it as a drive in windows. You can also add multiple accounts too

If you are running Windows, you can use WebFolders. It doesn't give you sync, but you can drag & drop files in and out of box.net with explorer. Just google 'box.net webfolders'.

Still Gladinet works perfectly and is free
It says with the free edition of Gladinet that you only get 1000 file transfers per task...Any idea what this means??

From what I gather it means you can't say paste more than 1000 things at once. I have uploaded 30GB of photos in a batch without any problems
I uploaded about 2GB of photos to box.net thinking that I can look at them on the TP. However, when I go to look at them on the TP's box.net, it is so slow to the point where I can't scroll the pictures filename list. And there is no preview or miniturized picture icon so you know what you are looking at (like on a PC). To see the picture you have to click each filename and wait for the whole file to download. The process is painfully slow. Guess it's only good for "parking" your files.
Also there is a filesize limit of 25MG unless you pay. This makes it all a bit of a waste of time for me, even Microsoft Skydrive is better (although has no app).

Did you mean 25MB? If it was 25GB that would be awesome lol. But if you did mean 25MB, then you are wrong, on 50GB accounts, the filesize limit is 1GB per file, trust me I've already tested this and it works

<blush> yes I meant 25MB. I created a box.net account on my PC before my touchpad arrived then logged into it on my Touchpad & assumed that this would upgrade my account. Then I tried to upload a couple of video files from my PC but got an error message about the 25MB size limit. My account settings show a 50GB capacity. Where am I going wrong?
PS their website states:
The free personal account has a file size limit of 25 megabytes. Please note that you can fill your 5 gigabytes of space with as many files as will fit, but no one file may exceed 25 megabytes. To remove this restriction, you may upgrade to a paid account which will allow you to upload files as large as one gigabyte.

That is really odd, I've successfully uploaded files that are nearly 100MB in size with no problems, I haven't had the patience to do any movies etc yet. I would try creating a brand new account on your touchpad and see if that still has problems. Maybe there is an issue converting your current account.
I'll ss when I get to work, but my max filesize was 1gb.
Nope, I created a new account directly from the TP after uninstalling & reinstalling the app, still get the same error message.

Can you confirm that you have created the new account from the BOX.NET application which was downloaded from the HP App Store?

Hey All,
Just wanted to update this thread to say that a few people on PreCentral had a very similar problem to the OP, and it seems that BOX.NET has changed it's terms for newer registered users.
It seems that if you register now, you get put on a 'LITE 5GB' account, this means that while you still have your 50GB, you can only upload up to 100MB per file.
Those that have the 1GB files size limit should have accounts called 'Personal +50GB'
You can check this by logging into BOX.NET, then going into My Account, then Settings, and scrolling all the way to the bottom of the screen. Would be curious to know what it says for you guys. Hope this helps!
Account type: Lite (5GB)
Max file size: 100 MB
edit:
i also noticed you can't directly link you image unless you upgrade
So just a heads up for everyone that uses dropbox or wants to start using dropbox, they are offering you up to 5 free gigs for using their new automatic camera upload feature on their beta software. The link for the desktop version of dropbox: http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=53104&replies=718
I believe they just came out with an android app as well where you can also get 5 free gigs (combined total though not 5 from desktop and 5 from android)
All you have to do is have some sort of external hard drive or sd card and have some .jpg files on there. You get 500 free megs for every 500 you upload for a max of 5 gigs.
Some tips:
1) If you already have a dropbox account with pictures of any file on there, you can just copy them from your dropbox folder to the sd card (CHANGE ANY NON-JPG EXTENSIONS TO JPG). That way when dropbox goes to find pictures and starts uploading, you will actually be syncing the files and not uploading (since those files are already in your account/cloud). You'll still get the 5 gigs as long as you let dropbox automatically upload pictures. You can delete the files afterwards.
2) Download this fake image zip (https://s3.amazonaws.com/picturesharing/fakeimages.tar.bz2) It's basically 17k zip file worth of jpg files but bloated so it actually reads 5 gigs. Now you can unzip the .tar.bz2 and unzip it again until you get a folder with jpgs (so unzip twice since it's a zip within a zip). Put these fake images onto your SD card, unmount the SD card, and load the SD card again (or USB drive). Dropbox will search for images when you plug in the sd card and will sync the jpgs.
From my own experience, just let the jpgs sync to your Camera Upload folder and you'll get the bonus space. You're not actually uploading 5gigs worth of jpgs because it's actually 17kb so don't you worry if you have slow upload speeds (like me).
3) If for some reason dropbox doesn't find the jpgs, try making a folder called DCIM and putting the jpgs in that folder.
If you don't have dropbox, it's a great way to save files and share on the cloud! You can sign up at dropbox.com or you can get another 250mb of free space by signing up as my referral, which I would love! my referral link is: http://db.tt/a4mt2G6
Enjoy!
I downloaded & installed v1.3.13 but cannot see any way to sync any portable devices - am I missing something?
EDIT - Doh! I just read the instructions about removing then reinserting the USB stick!
EDIT again - just reinserted my USB stick & nothing seems to be happening?
Don't forget, TouchPad owners get a free 50GB account from Box.com (used to be .net) - you just have to sign up from withing webOS.
2GB and even 5GB just sounds so dinky.
Worked like a charm!!!! Thanks.
dwl99 after you insert your usb stick (if you have disabled the autoplay feature) you have to right click on it and choose import photos using dropbox and it should work great.

That is true. The Box.com deal is better but it is also good to have a Dropbox account with storage space if you use Titanium Backup.
Follow the link provided in the first post and download the windows client. I used this dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox%201.3.13.exe
Box may have larger space, but you only have a 100mb file size limit. Dropbox the only limit you have is your total space.

thank you! yeah I have a box.net but it sucks to have that 100mb limit and I like how dropbox has the desktop client so if I wanted to upload anything I can just put it into my dropbox folder and it'll automatically upload by itself

Dropbox or.... Sugar Sync!
Hi thanks for that, the normal (free) dropbox size could always do with being bigger! I was amazed when I found out and signed up for box.net's free 50gb but found it to be garbage. The 25mb file limit (well sound's like it's now 100mb from your posts) was prohibitive for files that would actually make use of 50gb and the lack of desktop sync (unless you are a business customer) also combined to make it pointless of me.
Genuinely not trying to sound too salesman-like but.. I recently started using sugar sync. It's 5gb free vs 2gb with dropbox. And it has no file size limit (like box.net). And it has desktop sync (like dropbox). And you can sync *any* folders on your computer with a right click context menu (better than dropbox where they all have to be in dropbox folder). And any pics or music you sync can then be streamed to any mobile android/ios etc device via their app (cos often that right click is easier than connecting & uploading). It's more spacious, easy and powerful in my experience so far. And you can select your dropbox folder as one to sync giving you double cloud backup protection and easing the transition if you want to switch!
I still use dropbox cos that's what I'm used to but I'm thinking of dropping it soon. If you're interested in giving it a try, PM me your email and I'll send you an invite which will give us both an extra 0.5gb on top of the 5gb you normally get. (And another advantage - there's no limit to how much space you can get via recommendations! unlike dropbox...). Yes I am shamelessly trying to increase my sugar sync storage but I do genuinely find it better and so might you and you'll get another 0.5gb too.
i dont think it increased it to the max.... cause now i only have 6.75 amount of space not 7.25
I'm at 11.7gb from referrals, using the jpg zip i can still get another 5?

edit: im an idiot
Thanks for the fake pics. This worked perfectly!
This is weird. I have installed Dropbox 1.3.13 o2 2 different Win7 64-bit and 1 WinXP computers. I have tried the fake jpg's on a USB stick and a microSD card and also tried putting the jpg's inside a DCIM folder but Dropbox still looks exactly the same as before. When I right-click the Dropbox taskbar icon there is no option to sync the DCIM folder. If I right-click the DCIM folder or the USB/SD card there is also no option to do anything with Dropbox. Surely I'm missing something really obvious???
EDIT - I just enabled Autoplay on the SD card on the WinXP machine & it now gives an option to sync when the card is reinserted.
EDIT again - just got it working on the Win7 PC - I needed to enable Autoplay for pictures, reinsert the USB stick, right click on the drive and then select Autoplay & then Dropbox sync.
Thanks for the tip.I recently signed up for Dropbox and is pretty awesome compared to others like box.com which offers 50GB of free is you use certain device. And what a horrible experience it was....what is the point of having all that space if the features are so limited so Dropbox has loyal customer. Thanks to the OP for the tip and to Dropbox.
Thanks for this. I also got capped at 6.75 even though i had a couple referrals. Still more than I had.

I found this topic over here at the Atrix forum.
I copied/pasted the below quote from the Dropbox forum here.
Hi everyone!
Even though the holidays have passed, we're really stoked to give you guys one more present -- a new experimental release! Under the wrapping you'll find a bunch of new toys, including a brand new Camera Upload feature. Here are the release notes:
• Automatically uploads photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or data plan
• 500MB of free space on first photo uploaded automatically
• Upload files of any size (no more 180 MB limit!)
• Support for resuming file uploads when there are network issues
• Various performance improvements & bug fixes
During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 5GB total (including the initial 500MB space).
[Update: this space is not separate from 5GB given for uploading on our desktop clients. Uploading from either desktop clients or Android app will count towards the same 5GB free space.]

Since there aren't really any good instructions on how this works I figured it might help to share what I had to do to get the free 500mb
First either download the apk from here. Or get it straight to your phone from this QR code. Both of these links can be found at the Dropbox forum page here (http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=53013).
Once you have the app installed either fresh or over a previous install. Open it. It should take you through the setup as if it was a new install rather than an update. Once the setup was over the app went to a new screen and showed my photos and videos being found and then it began to upload them.
I haven't had a chance to steal the Nook Color from my daughter long enough to try it out on it. But I expect it to work just fine. I'll go ahead and share my Atrix story below. It might or might not happen on the NC. If it does just shut down and restart. It should be cool after that.
I did have an issue when running it for the first time on my Motorola Atrix. I went into my settings while it was uploading. When I went back to Dropbox. The app did a funky crash, force close. Then it got interesting. The app opened and wanted to start all over, then closed, then opened and began a loop of that that would not close or allow me to get to settings or anything that would help. I had no issue when pressing the fingerprint button and then choosing to shut down.
After it restarted I went back to Dropbox. I had to log in, but other than that it is running just fine. No more weird loops, fc's or strangeness of any sort so far. And I did get my 500mb right away. I did delete the photos that I tried uploading from my pc earlier and it didn't act like I cheated or anything.
Now hopefully no one minds if I put in a shameless plug.
If you don't already have Dropbox and want to try it please consider using my referral link(http://db.tt/LbHgKOa). Using my referral link gives both you and I an extra 500mb of space when you sign up. It is free!
If you'd rather just go straight to the Dropbox website it is here. http://www.dropbox.com.
Also if anyone else wants to post their referral link below I don't mind at all. We should all go for the max space allowed.
I didn't feel like putting 1 million pictures on my Nook so I copied a few HD movies from my computer into SD Card/DCIM/screenshots and renamed the file to look like the pics around it and then I changed the extension to .png and let it do its thing. I now have 5 more GB of space.

yeah. Box has 50gb, but my data feels kinda locked there (no batch DL for free accounts). And the 100mb file limit severely limits its usefulness.
I've upped my account to 7gb so far. Trying 8
