note 2 drop tests... good. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

As many of you know from personal experience, the galaxy note is extremely tough. I've seriously lost count how many times I've dropped it, hard, on concrete, marble tiles etc. And the screen hasn't cracked. At all.
I was shocked therefore to see the galaxy s3 drop tests. Minor drops seemed to shatter it easily. I was terrified that the note 2, which is really just a super sized s3 would be the same or worse. However...
http://m.intomobile.com/2012/10/03/...zHsbf0gH8-oC4Cw&start=10&sa=N&biw=640&bih=400

As far as I'm concerned, the GS3 test was biased. If I'm thinking of the right video(the iphone 5 vs. GS3 drop test vid), the guy was practically HURLING the GS3 & just dropping the iphone normally.

Pretty strong phone for the most part, even my GSN suffer some abuse when I came to drops but no real impact marks or screen damage. But what really boggles my mind I don't even remember not once my stylus coming out, wonder how Samsung designed the slot for the stylus to stay in.

I just dropped my note today, first serious drop I've had. The s-pen came out, I didn't get to see the angle of impact against the asphalt. It fell about 3ft. No damage to any part of the note, gotta love Otterbox Defender.

How easy does the Galaxy S3 Screen Crack?

I currenty have an iPhone 4. Had it for about 2 Years and have dropped it 2-3 times but only from like 1.5 Meters.
I always keep my iphone on me incase I want to quickly search something or remotely get into a server. So when I got bed I also listen to music on it and then fall asleep. Every morning I pretty much end up sleeping ontop of my iPhone 4 as it sinks down under me lol.
Im going to get a Galaxy S3 soon. I was wondering if sleeping ontop of the Galaxy S3 would be an issue. I think the Galaxy S3 screen should be strong enough for me to sleep on. Since the phone pushes down into soft material anyway.
Are there any flaws in the Galaxy S3 is that I should know about.
I heard of a charging issue (Where the i9300 wouldn't charge) and it requires reboot. But I think someone stated that a software update fixed the issue.
Please let me know of any resolved flaws and current flaws to take note of with the Galaxy S3.
Also I'm going to buy a metal Aluminium bumper that goes around the Galaxy S3. Which will take the impact whem the phone is dropped.
Lol, you sleep on smartphones,
Hahahaha sorry cant stop laughing
But thats a bad idea
I suppose the bigger the screen the easier is to break it, the iphone only has a small screen, also the S3 screen is 20% thinner than the S2 , though they say it`s just as strong.
Get yourself a case and a screen protector, it only takes a second to ruin you new phone
John.
Why dont u get an mp3 player to sleep on !
IF YOU LIKE MY WORK, THANK ME BY THE BUTTON BELOW
You see, you can sleep on an iphone4 because it's a mere toy. The Galaxy S3, however, is not a toy and therefore must be treated with the utmost care.
Sleeping on your phone? Couldn't you put it further? Anyway, buy insurance would be best solution for you.

Sleeping on S3 wouldn't be a problem... Just make sure it wont drop off the bed
Sleeping with your s3, i understand its a beatiful phone but maybe you should consider to get a girl instead lol

My S3 hasn't yet been dropped but I will say it's an Outstanding phone and on top of that in my opinion it feels stronger and sturdier than an iPhone, I have seen a friends S3 being dropped from 2 meters and they're wasn't a scratch, I personally think where the phone is so Light that drop damage is less likely to occur
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I've dropped mine twice. About 4ft to pavement both times. A couple marks around the outer bezel. The first time it hit right beside the screen, landed on an angle then the screen went down flat and it bounced off the pavement and up then back down into the screen again. Absolutely 0 damage to the screen, yet. Waiting on my Otterbox...
I can take a picture with my SLR when I get home if you want.
I was hammered one night and woke up with my S3 under my back. So I did actually sleep on mine inadvertently. It is fine.
Who knows though. There are so many variables with dropping or sleeping on your phone that anything could happen.

got screen crack after two days. direct glass damage is the evil
I'll just have to place it under my bed.
They should really test these phones in these situations. I don't drop my phones I only sleep ontop of them.
Now I just remembered I got someone's broken galaxy s2. The whole LCD display is stuffed but the glass is intact so I'll test that.
Offically the Galaxy S3 is tough enough for me to sleep on.
(Note. My bed is soft and not a hard surface which gives the phone sinking room)
Still I wouldn't recommend sleeping on your S3
Mine slide out off my pocket last night dropping maybe a couple inches and I have a hair line crack a cross the screen only second day of having it
thank god for porn , it makes me keep my phone very close to me
mine broke from 2 ft drop
I dropped mine very lightly from table to tile floor and it cracked and screen doesn't turn on anymore. I even had it in an Incepio case.
Haven't dropped it yet but have stood on it twice after falling asleep on the couch and forgetting it was on the floor when I got up, and it survived that no problem so all the more reason to keep case and screen protector on.
Had the phone 2 1/2 days. I'm sitting down in basketball shorts, phone is smooth so it slides out of my pocket easily. Lands on screen 18 inches below. Screen now has hairline crack across it.
Drop from night stand on hardwood floor nothing, fell from about 3 feet on the cement nothing but I did have the flip case

Very impressed

Got my DNA roughly a week ago and have been comparing it with some of the newest phones that colleagues and co-workers have. I knew I'd be impressed with the device after reading the specs and reviews of this beast when compared to the s3, but I really never expected out to be this amazing.
The screen is large, yet the phone is comfortable in the hand. The contour and taper of the rear polycarbonate is among the most, of not the most, comfortable phone I've picked up. A lot easier to handle than Samsung's s3 and note 2. The only real downside is that the back absorbs skin oils very easily and van be a core to clean. I just got through cleaning mine out and it looks as awesome as the day I got it though I know that will change by tomorrow night.
Comparing it to the s3, the note 2, the optimus g, and the evo 4g lte, I was delightfully surprised to see that the only things it was lacking in comparison to its competitors were things that didn't bother me at all, namely battery and sd slot. I was also mildly disappointed with the camera clarity when compared to the optimus g, but my eyes are better than most and other people I showed the comparison couldn't see the same lack of crispness, so I'll not list that as a downfall. The DNA blew everything that wasn't the optimus g away in the benchmark tests, we decided on and really brought to light the superiority of the HTC device over its Samsung rivals. Audio quality was really no contest with the dna's beats audio. Surfing and other everyday routines were personal preference for the most part with some of us absolutely hating the sense ui. I personally prefer sense to any other android ui at the moment. In terms of feel and ergonomics, the almost universal consensus was in favor of the DNA.
At the moment, my phone is the envy of the workplace with some co-workers still running devices as old as the iPhone 3gs. The unlocked SIM slot makes it one of the only stock international capable phones in the store (we sell phones where I work) and is the only 1080p phone in the store.
As amazing as the phone is though, there are definitely some issues with it. Compatibility issues with the phone run rampant and can get very irritating. Battery life, while more than sufficient for typical use, needs to be watched like a hawk over periods of extended use. Pre-installed Verizon apps feel cluttering on grid. SIM card slot is not very easily accessible. The SIM card comes pre-installed and did cause issues upon arrival. And probably most annoyingly of all, the cover for the usb port is just horrible. It falls apart way too easily even worth mild, careful use. Running my finger along the edges of the phone, I can feel a very deliberate bulge where the "door hinge" is at on an otherwise flat surface. It is incredibly annoying to someone like me where the look and feel of the device is just as important as its functionality.
All in all though, this droid has very much impressed me, which I think it's a big thing considering how much I thought I knew I was getting coming in. It's exceeded my expectations in ways I've never even thought of and will likely continue to do so for quite some time now.
On an unrelated note, I was actually somewhat disappointed in the widely respected diztronic case for the DNA. It came in a few days later than expected (ended up having to wait over the weekend), it blocked of the notification light (though I already knew this going in), it made the power button harder to press (the complete opposite of what I'd heard), and it leaves an imprint of their logo on the back of your phone when you take it off (though I've had good luck getting it out thus far). I'll definitely only be keeping it on at work when I'm selling people on phone cases lol.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Nice thoughts, largely agree, particularly about the case though I just took it off and enjoy the bare phone in my hand.
I keep my phone of at home and at this point only use it to not look like an assy salesman when I try to sell people on cases. Not to say cases are horrible, they're just horrible for this phone. I'd probably put an impact resistant case on something as squishy as an s3 and would definitely use out to cover up the twilight sparkles of the optimus g and the nexus 7. To me, the look and feel of the phone matters just as much as its functionality. With the DNA, it just looks and feels perfect as is. Not too much on any modern Verizon phone right now. Only one that comes close is the wp8x imo.

Bendgate?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Y7tPczbOec&feature=youtu.be
Thoughts?
Don't be a fatty and sit on your phone i guess?
We all carry around an industrial press in our pants....don't we?? That was a couple minutes of my life I'll never get back.
Really.. ?
The fact it took less pressure to break completely than the iPhone 6 is a bit worrying....
Sorry, but I'm gonna take what a machine did to this phone with a grain of salt. I did see on another video where a guy tried to bend the S6 Edge with his hands, and just could not do it at all. I wouldn't worry about this phone bending in your pocket. I promise you, that if this machine took every phone you've owned, and put it to the test, most would bend just the same? Now I've never bent a phone in my whole life, have you?
wow...a phone bends in an industrial press...impressive. LOL All phones will break under a press like that. If it is made of metal it will bend and not go back as well. Bendgate was about the phone bending in peoples pocket from general use and overall pressure on the phone. My son actually had an iPhone 6 (not the plus) and it bent in his pocket. He was lucky that AT&T let him exchange it. This video just wasted a good phone for no reason.
The issue with the comparison with the IP6 "Bendgate" is wrong
What this demonstration misses, and what it makes people draw erroneous conclusions to, is that the iPhone 6 was easily bent by hand or in your pocket due to a particular weak spot around the volume buttons. This didn't require a machine to bend, it was performed by kids on Youtube. Drawing conclusions between how much pressure this machine took attempting to bend the phones from a point that was *not* the iPhone 6's original weak spot (in addition to Apply having quietly reinforced said weak spot since), causes people to believe that the S6 must, by way of not withstanding this machine's test, be as or more bendable than the iPhone 6 as it pertains to "bendgate", which is flat out wrong.
I think we can all agree, that we don't care how much pressure it takes to bend/break a phone, just so long as it is an unreasonable amount of pressure - phones being bent by kids and pant pockets are obviously below an acceptable threshold.

Not really, both are at pressures that aren't really going to happen in your pocket. It's another benchmark test that is useless. Sit back and think about how many times your phone is going to experience a bending force like this. The only thing I can really think of, is if it is in your back pocket... but even then, why would you sit on your phone? It's uncomfortable, and you just spent a bunch of money on an electronic device you are going to sit on? You wouldn't sit on any of your other electronics.
The fact of the matter is, yes, maybe one phone can handle less stress than the other, but at 149 lbs vs 179 lbs, both are well above a normal bending force the phones will experience. It would be a worry if one of the phones failed at 20 lbs of force... But I doubt we will here about many stories of phones bending.
Also, what was stated earlier, it wasn't that the iphone wasn't strong enough, it was that it had a weak spot due to the design. So even though the galaxy s6 had a lower threshold, it most likely doesn't have a weak spot that significantly reduces the threshold to normal, everyday forces experienced by your phone.
At the launch event, Samsung went out of their way to point out that the s6 / s6e wouldn't bend easily..even cracking jokes about it. I'm also pretty sure they said their metal frame was 50% stronger than any competitor's, so something about this video doesn't sit right with me. Not that this worries me in any way, the whole thing is ridiculous.
I wouldn't worry about this, yet... When I hear of people bending phones in their pockets or easily walking into stores and bending display devices with their bare hands, then it will become an issue.
I've had the 6 plus since day 1 never had it bend. Not even warped a little. As long as your not a dumbass with your phone you should be good.
Honestly tho. Wait until unboxtherapy can do a bend test or someone like his test. Because a machine can obviously bend any phone. Proves next to nothing in real world usage terms.

first of all., that video is of the s6 edge and the s6 edge has a thinner and smaller frame than the s6 so it is much easier to bend. second of all. the glass is curved and we all know what happens when you put force on a curved glass. it smashes easily compared to flat glass. Unless they do the s6, i would not trust that video. never the less, i am still getting the s6 edge because i like the design.

This is a moot point. No Samsung flagship to date has bent in a consumer's pocket or hands. Every device will bend/break at some point in a hydraulic press. I don't care for the negative advertising, but their point was accurate and still is with the S6 Edge.

so would you have preferred if they used their hands instead? because i'm there will be a flood of them coming soon..
personally, i don't care if the phone bends, only an idiot would put their phone in their back pocket.
i'm only saying that Samsung is notorious for mocking Apple and with the Edge it looks like it will bend under the same pressure iphone did. point is, Samsung should learn keep their mouth shut and stop bashing apple, because they are starting to look just like them.

Only on the machine with fixed pressure points at both ends and the center of the device using bars to evenly distribute the load. But with the correct pressure points, the iPhone will bend under much less pressure. It has not yet been demonstrated that a Samsung flagship chassis will behave in the same way.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 8, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Love this phone best phone I have ever owned.
Love the phone, AT&T/Samsung bloatware I can live without, especially Touch Wiz UI!
I had an IPhone 7 Plus, then a Galaxy S8+, now the Note 8.
Dear me, this is one gorgeous phone. I got my iPhone out the other day to prepare it for sale and damn I didn't miss it at all. It felt far less premium than the Note does, for me at least. This is the most beautiful phone I think I have ever owned.
are you finding that the screen gets scratched easily? mine has the samsung led flip cover and there are still small scratches along the edge.

My screen hasn't scratched but the framing around the back camera already looks like it was dragged on concrete (not really, but is is very noticable). There were a few days I had this phone before I had a case for it. Not sure got it got marked up so much. Must be delicate.
Regardless, this phone is by far my favorite I've ever owned.
Absolutely love this phone! Using it is a joy. And taking out the pen to jot something down or do a quick sketch, just confirms every time for me why I love the Note. For me, it's the most useful device that fits in my pocket. It baffles me why so many others seem to be rushing to remove features and make these things we all carrry around less useful, but the Note series is still a throwback to the opposite approach. Long live the Note!
Lag/Stutter/Jank whatever you call it, single handedly ruins this phone for me, why in 2017 do we still have framedrops? its the only reason I even consider iPhones, as they have far less of it.
Its great all around. I miss the IR blaster, and the fingerprint reader on the back is annoying. But its super fast, has the SD card slot, has great features and a great camera and a great battery life.
So far fantastic.

Ergonomics (in-hand feel)

Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand. Resist the urge to say "TWSS" just now. Seriously.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Extra weight over my old Note 4 and J700T1 makes it feel more solid. With cases off, Note 9 is more slippery than my Note 4 or J700T1. Note 9 feels fancier because of smooth back but would never dream of using it without a case.
It feels almost the same as my Note 8. Slightly wider, slightly shorter, slightly heavier than the N8, but so little difference it's tough to notice. Unless you have one in both hands at the same time, really hard to tell the difference.
I still like the Note 7 for in hand feel overall. I think that phone hit the sweet spot for size/weight and height to width ratio. Alas, our N7's are no more (well, some may have a stray around yet), but that was my favorite phone ever for in hand feel (and my favorite phone ever overall honestly I think).

So funny, I actually still have 2 Note 7's that for some reason Verizon never wanted. I walked in, called and begged for them to take them, but they never did.
That being said, I think you're right about the feel of the 7. It was a perfect device in the hand. But, boy does the performance stink. Turned it on and compared it to my 9 and it is a slug, even with nothing on it. So strange how I don't recall it being so slow when I got it 2 years ago.
Having come from an S7, this unit, while esthetically pleasing, is definitely not a one-handed experience like the S7.
The feel of the Note isn't as comfortable as the S7, the thinner bezels and sharper corners makes holding this device a little more worrisome. Especially when you don't have a case to protect your investment.
While the home button isn't in a position that's ideal, at least it's not right by the camera lens.
The S-Pen is great! It's a nice piece of engineering.
The addition of the Bixby button is a brainfart that needs to disappear, as I have NO use for Bixby at all. Samsung is trying too hard to be Apple. Screw Apple, stop following and start leading Sammy.
Just my 2 Canadian cents.

I think Samsung nailed a home run with this phone. It's not even a comparison with any iPhone, much less a fair fight.
One of the biggest things people don't mention is the input latency with fingers and the s-pen. Better than the 3 iPhones I've had. S-pen latency is great. I still have not seen a number but it is quick.

Until I remapped that painful button it was giving me the ****s..
It would almost drive a person to root the phone and put on one of the ROMs that turns it into something useful.
Overall I am coming off the Hauwai P9 that I was pretty comfortable with for 10 months.. it did everything I needed and I didn't feel like I needed to root it.
The note 9 is feeling good..I have big hands so don't have a problem with it in one hand.. so between 2 thumb typing and a finger and a thumb (2 hands).. I can get a good typing speed up.
Still not sure on the case and screen saver I will settle on.. have got a few going at the moment and playing between them..
The heavy duty one makes the phone a bit big.. but still feels fine and don't get the feeling that I have to be too dainty with it..
The carbon fibre cover I am using now feels a bit like the phone is going to slip out of my hands.. today I was concerned while I was shopping and pulled it out..
I use gnotes for shopping lists thus will have it out a few times with one hand on the trolley and one hand ticking off items..it's at that time I am feeling that I would not want to drop this or it's going to make for a bad day..
But in saying that.. I use a tablet holder in bed for YouTube/gaming or reading..and finding the using it as a back rest while I flick through threads and type them this takes that too heavy feel out of it..
I would say this is a big as I would want with a phone..

Yes they are a pain in the ass. It cause me problems instantly when I bough mine yesterday. Had it in the holder in my car and the sun shine on the phone and the edge reflected the bright sunlight and blinded my eyes. It also catches smudges all the time when just holding the phone. It reflects light when looking at the screen taking away screen estate. There´s nothing good with edge at all! Only problems.

Well used to have the iPhone X and to be honest I do have small hands so the note 9 feels a bit big on my hand, but also with time I'm having a blast with it, I wish the the fingerprint scanner be a little bit lower.
The back scratches easily, is a fingerprint magnet and is slippier than a penguin on ice.
I prefer Oneplus's sand back or rubber. These high gloss high slip phones are the dumbest thing to ever be invented. The slip off sofas, smash. Slip out of your hand, smash. Yuk.

Would anyone care to comment on overall durability? Obviously if you drop it without a case on it is going to smash to pieces. Those who have dropped the phone on a hard surface with a case on, how did it fare?

Got 2 drops of about 1 meter high. No cracks, no damage luckily I'm using a cheap silicon case with whitesone dome on screen.
Phone feels solid but you know....glass is fragile.

Thanks for the reply. I was actually just about to purchase but did not realise the entire back is glass!! Pretty big deal for me, I'm coming from the Galaxy Active series. Obviously I'd put a sturdy case on it but not sure if this is the one for me, I'd be absolutely devastated if I smashed the back. Goodbye waterproof.
Stylus
The Note 9 feels great... but the stylus "clicker" hurts my hand when using. I have to wrap tape around it. The edges are sharp.
