Hi there,
It's been a long time since I posted anything on these forums. We all know that the TFP has several issues, starting from random reboots all the way up to poor I/O performance, WiFi (for some) and no GPS. Alright.
But among them all, on a day-to-day basis, 2-3 issues are really all that matter and they are - (1) I/O Performance, (2) random reboots (bigger deal than I/O) and (3) a lesser known issue, which I faced on Stock ROMs primarily, some screen glitches that happen at very high brightness and with a white background.
For now I want your feedback on 1 and 2. So far, I faced no random reboots but I did notice quite sluggish performance upon restoring apps from Titanium Backup. Also while downloading big apps or files from Appstore/browser, there seems to be a little sluggishness at some point. however I can't tell if it is better than before. Benchmarks also seem to suggest no big improvement in I/O performance.
So, please respond to the poll and if you wish leave comments explaining your opinion as well. Please keep things civil and let this not boil down to a ASUS bash festival! lol  Personally, I am very happy overall with the update. I just feel it can be better, especially as Infinity pad got that I/O fix a while back (if I remember correctly).
Cheers, y'all!
Better I/O Performance, No random reboots.
Right now, it feels as if the I/O performance is as good as it can get, software wise. We must not forget that the NAND chip inside is of a questionable quality, a quality that makes me wonder if Asus imported from Chinese hoax-phones manufacturers.
The problem si hardware. Jelly is bether but the emmc is the same.

I hadn't had random reboots in a long long time. With JB it's happening fairly often; seems to be when the screen turns off.
On ICS I had the screen set to only turn off when I turned it off, i.e. it would never sleep automatically. That could be why I didn't have the issue.
I've now set JB the same way so I'll see if it still reboots randomly.

Are you using the dock with an SD card? There's a known issue related to it (the tf300 had it as well).
we should petition asus to change our internal hardware a long time ago.. but jb sorted out many issues from software side anyway. Check development section for i/o data2sd thread.. makes prime a lot more stable and faster!
Tapatalked!
Sadly after updating mine two days ago ive had nothing but problems from programs force closing to the power button not working all the time.
would almost believe that it's a hardware issue except it started literally right after the update. Can't even run Bad Piggies but for a few minutes before it starts to studder and then finally lock up.
Even my browser locks up now which before the update had only happened twice....thought this was supposed to be a update but instead i got a downgrade lol. Hope they work this out.
Do a factory reset after JB Update. There could be bugs ported to JB. My camera was disabled after JB update. Did a Factory reset, works much better.
I did mine and my Prime is now much faster. Strongly recommend.

There was a card in the dock so that could have been the issue; thanks for the heads-up. Since I disabled sleeping I've not had a reboot.
I used to get frequent random reboots and pauses whenever I had a microSD inserted. My solution was to format it to NTFS. FAT and FAT32 were also ok but NTFS allows for bigger files. I think it was the default Ext4 format that caused the issue; can't remember for sure.
I mention it in case someone wants to try an NTFS-formatted SD card; it might avoid the problem while we wait for Asus to fix it.
I've had the Prime since December, and use it just about every day.
The JB update for me is just like all the other past updates. It's awesome at first, then I get ANR's. I even did the factory reset and after 2 days, the ANR's made their come back. My 2.5 year old Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S) outperforms the Prime at browsing.

Would this issue be related to having a USB mouse plugged in to the dock and getting random reboots? I have a wireless Logitech mouse that I use when my prime is in the dock and since the JB update it always seems to reboot within a few minutes of having the mouse transmitter plugged in. I haven't see it reboot without the mouse transmitter plugged in while using the dock so I suspect that is the culprit. I tried a different wireless mouse (also Logitech) and I had the same results. I did not notice this issue with ICS.
Otherwise the JB update has been pretty solid. I did do a factor reset right after JB rollout because of some other glitches that were happening. I also haven't seen the screen tearing issue which was happening daily with the last ICS firmware.

Apparently this happened to the TF300, too. If you have something plugged into the dock - SD card and/or USB device - and the screen goes to sleep, on wakeup the thing is likely to reboot. One can hope ASUS plans an update to fix this...
JB made it a little better but its still laggy and I still get ANRs but not as much as before. Having an Sd card in the dock also causes random reboots. I've done a factory reset and I'm no longer rooted and was never unlocked. As soon as I see a better tablet out this ones gonna have to go. Its been almost a year and so many updates. I really dont think any software will ever make this tablet any better...at least mine in particular.

Haven't seen 1 reboot on my prime since JB update 2 weeks ago. Have sdcard all the time in and a pen drive or external hard drive almost all the time.

I have only started to have random reboots since going to JB. It's good to know this could be caused by having an SD card in the dock. I really hope removing my SD card resolves the reboots. Other than this, I am very happy with the JB update and my prime is running better.

It is great to know that a vast majority of you guys seem to have experienced fewer issues with JB than on ICS. I too have noticed that my tablet is working way better on JB, and there may be imperfections here and there, but that is the hardware's limitations. I am glad that the whole experience is soo much smoother especially in the areas I use it the most.
I look forward to kick ass ROMs with the latest Kernel. But though I am unlocked, I don't mind the stock ROM. It is good.. :good:

Hi there,
since I updated my TF201 (TF Prime) to JB I have random reboots while using the USB mouse. I didn't try this before but when using another device via the USB port in the dock I immediately experience reboots. If I don't use the USB port it works like a charm, way smoother than ICS. But the ability to use devices via USB was an important reason to choose the TF201. Please ASUS / Android, fix this. I'm wondering if the other unfortunates among us have similar behaviour of their TF201 or other ASUS tablets.
USB devices work great for me, I use both the dock port and the adaptor to plug USB devices into the tablet itself. I did do a complete factory reset though, before and after installing JB.

Count me in as someone experiencing reboots after the update. Same scenario as everyone else. I get reboots when the screen shuts off with a mouse plugged in. Is there a fix for this yet?

Sleep death and wifi disconnects where I have to reset me connection ONLY happen when my touchpad is plugged in charging. Has anyone else tested this or have similar experience? I have been testing this over the past week or so and it holds true for me. If I let the unit sleep wether I do it auto sleeps...if its plugged in wifi needs reset and sometimes sleep death. If its on battery nothing like this ever happens.
I use a targus stylus from best buy and it works awesome. No complaints here.
YouTube for some reason works one day the next it won't. Not sure if its flash or what. Sometimes restarting helps.
Netflix works just fine using an old version
Same with Facebook
I use thumb keyboard. If you don't have you should get!
Amazon AP store works just fine no issues.
I don't play to many games but dungeon defenders works fantastic.
That's all I got for now if others have suggestions for apps or settings let me know so far I'm very much enjoying cm7 and am extremely thankful for their hardwork. I also want to thank the other devastating that were working on different projects. They deserve a shout for their dedication to

Sleep of Death
To resolve sleep of death, download "no-frill cpu" app and set profile to "powersave". I read it in this forum and it does eliminate the sleep of death ptoblem.
My only problem with CM7 on the TouchPad is that the Android Market does not see it as a tablet. I'd like to use the TouchPad as something other than simply a big phone.
So, there are some apps I boot into webOS to use (like USA Today, Sports Illustrated, and Comics HD). The only Android apps I really like using on the TouchPad are Netflix and Pulse News.
While I appreciate all the hard work the Cyanogenmod Team is putting in, I really hope ICS can be made to work on the TouchPad...
In 3 weeks of using CM7 I have never had a SOD. I wonder if my hardware is different.

Lucky u, SOD on Alpha 2.1 was a real and serious issue, thankfully now fixed.
Here's the official patch that will permanently fix the SOD problem on your TouchPad.
NB: It is recommended to wipe the dalvick/cache before to install the patch, otherwise the TouchPad might hang on bootloop.
From now on you can set the cpu minium speed when's screen off as low as 192mhz, without having to worry about getting a SOD.
What are the major issues with CM7 on the Touchpad?
Well, its an alpha port, meaning not everything is gonna work.
First of all, its not stable, some apps WILL crash, wifi settings sometimes will fail to work, fluctuating your signal. Almost every popular app seems to work now, netflix, facebook, gmail, youtube works alright, the quality of the videos is not that good but bearable. Sometimes random SoD (sleep of death) occur putting your table into a semi perm sleep stage, and you have to press the power button and home button and hold them for 20 seconds or so.
Overall, its 6/10 of what it can be. don't expect 2.3 to work as good as your phone.
The main problems for me are:
Incompatible apps, either from the resolution and screen size, or not landscape optimized.
No VOIP integration.
Video does not play, either from youtube or flash, it shows lines and other static.

The wife and I have had virtually no major problems. The biggest one was not being able to connect to wifi outside of home but that seems to be fixed with a post I found here. Otherwise its small things, occasional app crashes, the odd app that wont run. Its no different than just about any custom rom on a phone (and I have seen many). Once in a blue moon ill get a random freeze/reboot. Never had the sod problem, Netflix, YouTube, flash videos all run like butter, I can stream anything I want, really, the TP has taken over as my main home device

Thanks for the replies. I bought my TP with the intention to install Android on it. Ive been waiting for a stable release, with ICS out it will probably be another 2 mths.
The main issue ive read about is the WiFi, which is pretty critical for what I use the TP for. Why do some people have the issue and others dont? Is there something that can be done to lessen the issue?

I turned off the setting that allows the wifi to turn off when the tablet goes to sleep. I also used the SOD fix just in case as well after I installed Alpha 2. That seems to do a good job keeping it connected.
Another thing I had to do was use my wireless G signal instead of my wireless N signal (I have dual band). On wireless N, I was getting a very weak signal but with wireless G the signal was very strong. Using WebOS, the wireless N was as strong as the G so I have to assume there is something weird with CM7 for this.
My only main issue is with wi-to. It's very sporatic and frustrating. Is anyone aware of a fix? Other than, just typical issues nothing critical. It's a surprisingly stable Alpha other than that. Facebook also doesn't work for me, but not a large issue.
My major issue is that I can't connect to my work's wifi with enterprise level encryption. I once got it to connect, but webpages would only load sometimes. On my home wifi, I have no issues connecting.
The other issues I've seen are that I woke up this morning, and my Touchpad was off instead of asleep. The battery wasn't dead or anything, and it turned back on fine. When I loaded Angry Birds, it crashed twice, but the third time it worked perfectly.

What SOD fix?
Every time I want to shutdown my TP in CM7 it gets restarted instead, and there was one time I got nut and forced shutdown it when it was booting and the system crashed. I had to uninstall and install everything which wasted my whole night in that day.....

I've run many custom ROMs on my Incredible and on my Eris, without app issues like this. The eris has a lot of apps that don't run well, but I can assure you this is not a custom ROM issue. I have yet to see an app that won't run on my incredible with custom ROMS.
BTW the wifi seems to work better for me at least with alpha 3. Before flashing alpha 3 my wifi was completely non-working, it would crash when I went into wifi settings.
I need my youtube and its not working properly on alpha 2 or 3. Once thats fixed I'm good on cm7.
But I"m still waiting for some one to do honeycombo or ICS
Hello guys
Being a long time member, and having rooted many of my devices before (Xoom, HTC Sensation etc) I have seen complaints like people are posting where some here are experiencing no battery/rebooting issues(like me) while others are experiencing the opposite. The first thing that any experienced developer here on XDA would tell you is that something went wrong when updating to the new .13 update, which is why some are experiencing problems, while others are not. It does not make sense that a good majority of us, have no issues...if the new .13 update was bad/faulty, then it would affect all of us, not just some. I would highly recommend that people with issues reformat/start from scratch, as this has helped others with similar issues. If this does not help, then unfortunately you just experience a bad update, which of course the only fix would be is to try to reinstall the update (easy to do if rooted) or wait for a new update from Asus.
Also, if your battery is dying quickly, check to see if it is warm to the touch even if you are not using it. If so, then this would definitely point to an app trying to do something in the background without your knowledge..maybe there is an app trying to sync but your wifi is off, or an app that you installed that does not play nice with ICS. I would suggest that those with problems can list their installed apps, and those without issues can see if they have any of the apps on their devices...this can help narrow the issue down and hopefully find the culprit.
Thanx

All fair points, but many people suspect that there are at least two batches of Primes floating around with different hardware. After all, even before this update, there were groups of people that had freezes and reboots and others who had none.
Another telling point is that as far as I can tell, .13 update completely fixed Primes that were previously having sleep of death and reboot problems, and caused sleep of death, reboot and battery problems only on Primes that were previously working fine. This also suggests two different hardware sets to me (e.g., they tested the .13 update only/mostly on the set of Primes that had previous problems).
the bad update/ flash/ application as a culprit to all the Primes problems went out the window long ago this is all horse**** the problem is with the tegra3 in some way and different hardware variances in X Prime vs B Prime vs Z Prime etc....etc...etc...

But that doesn't make sense either, because I had no rebooting issues before and no battery issues after updating to .13.
What we need here is hard data evidence from something such as a battery/hardware/resource monitor, which I have not seen from anyone with battery issues.
I don't have the issue so there is really nothing for me to monitor and gather data from.
Just had this issue pop up. Was using my Prime this morning on the charger, closed the screen (have the dock) pulled the plug put it in my bag for the day. Went to class, and then to work pulled it out at 6pm to check out a new note taking app and found my Prime to be HOT, like I left in in the car on a sunny day hot. Opened it up and it wouldn't come to life, held the on/off till it "shut off" then powered it back on. Battery life is 80% prime 14% dock. As requested my apps are as follows.

If your TFP is hot it could be an indication that the processor is running something and causing heat.
Try an app like SystemPanel to monitor resource usage. You may have to get the paid version in order to track app resource usage history
https://market.android.com/details?id=nextapp.systempanel
Here is another good website to find other apps to monitor usage and find out what exactly is using your battery.

Although I didn't suffer from issues here ln battery, after hearing about it, I went in and changed all intervals and cut off anything unnecessary. I especially made sure to raise email interval. As that's the thing that goes off the most. When it does it also causes the audio to go off constantly. So far I've been getting even better battery life than before in deep sleep. Actually very impressed how lil energy is used while in deep sleep. Before o took my screenshot and used tablet, it was in deep sleep for over 7-8hrs. And didn't budge from 100%. That's pretty impressive.

Yes! My wifi signal strength matches my Moto Xoom, I haven't had one reboot..GPS is weak but I honestly didn't buy the tab for that (Ipad users don't have it, but who cares its not a navigation device) . My 1080p movie playback is flawless, colors are rich. This is truly a sexy, powerful beast of a tablet! I'm sure that we all can agree on that...I'm sure that Asus will work out the kinks that some are having soon.
Everywhere I go, even Ipad owners love the way this Tablet looks, especially the screen display

What's up guy, still spreading those chrome rumors??
Yeah, I'm wondering if people have their update intervals low an the system is constantly trying to update apps in the background?? This would explain the warm/hot backs of the Primes by the batteries for some
The battery, sleep of death and random reboot IT IS CAUSE BY THE NEW OTA .13
i have factory restore 3 times no app install, same problem
i have push the OTA .13 MANUALLY TWICE same problem without installing app.
there's no way to get around this, only a new firmware fix or backflash to .11 only solution for us having problem with this new .13

So then why is it only affecting some, but not others. Lets rule out all possibilities an not pretend like we know things for certain when you don't

Why are any users experiencing the range of issues this tablet is presenting while others are not? We have 3-5 major bugs that are sporadically scattered across a wide range of serial numbers. I believe its downright obvious that TFPs have a variation in hardware quality and/or quality control issues. It's fracking embarrassing. To say that only some people are having this battery issue just continues to follow the trend that has been ASUS the past 3 months.

Im guessing the reason for most of these problems is going from HC to ICS without a full wipe.
I have flashed thousands of roms on my devices since Windows Mobile 6.1 and when portion of people have issues they are told to check md5 sums and full wipe.
A little from column a and a little from column b perhaps.

Wipe? Doesn't an OTA format everything?

All fair points, but many people suspect that there are at least two batches of Primes floating around with different hardware. After all, even before this update, there were groups of people that had freezes and reboots and others who had none.
Another telling point is that as far as I can tell, .13 update completely fixed Primes that were previously having sleep of death and reboot problems, and caused sleep of death, reboot and battery problems only on Primes that were previously working fine. This also suggests two different hardware sets to me (e.g., they tested the .13 update only/mostly on the set of Primes that had previous problems).

This.
I had no sleep of death problem until the update, and it's ridiculous how fast it's burning through battery now.
I'm on my second prime. first one had nasty reboot/boot loop problem, see here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462704.
The second one started good, no reboots and seems to work ok for me. although GPS doesn't work at all in any conditions. I knew that and couldn't blame others. wifi is weak but in my smaller home, I can manage to use it.
then the thing broke again after .13 update. blackscreen/reboots about 3 times a charge. Battery drain is about 2-3% per hour while sleeping. one of the most important reason I wanted the prime was good battery life. I guess now I have no reason to keep it. some other company may have my 500 bucks when they release their tegra 3 tab.

Sorry bro! Seems like the latest update did bonk some primes, especially that sleep bug. Hope you have better luck with your next purchase.
Are you claiming the .13 update gave you problems? Because that is news to me and I have not heard anything about it. There certainly aren't 5 threads on the first page alone full of people complaining about it
I just got a new one from BB and I recommend not doing the update if you get a new one.
If you exchange it again wait and check the forums for future updates that completely squashes all known bugs.

You know you can go back to the .11 update, right? I did, even though my only issue was slightly reduced battery life on .13.

Sorry to hear that. Besides HW acceleration I have not seen enough to make me upgrade. I'm still on HC 3.2.1 and don't have any issue besides the known gps. I'm gonna wait till everything settles down.

Good luck and I can't wait to see your post about that next "flawless " tablet that you believe you will buy. Not to mention that lack of updates that would surely not come to fruitation. But you are making a good decision for yourself and again good luck.

My opinion: if you return and stop using a device just because of some software issues caused by a patch in the early stages of a device's lifespan, you dont really need/want that device. EVERY product with software will have some software related issues at one time.
And this is android. Bootloader gonna be unlocked any day now. Custom roms usually are better than stock roms. And they'll be coming. So chill

Dianne Hackborn from Google's already said here that the h/w acceleration in ICS is the same as HC. The low-level code from HC was the base for ICS and changes were mostly UI based. ICS is a much bigger deal coming from GB than HC.
There you go..lol. you love you some Dianne she does make great points n her article though.

Thanks for the info. Even more reason for me not to upgrade =). When I did upgrade my 2nd Prime the browser and some apps were smoother and the overall usage was smoother. But either way I'm happy with HC for now.
this thread already exists... closing
So I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what my issue was with my prime crashing particularly during games (Shadowgun, Osmos, even Tiny Tower which gets any device hot despite its low-res graphics). It was puzzling because on the "random reboots" thread it sounded more like a completely random (not caused by GPU) and very frequent occurrence, whereas mine seemed to be triggered by graphics work.
Well, in trying just about everything including uninstalling app after app, I decided to remove my microsd card (the one in the prime, not the dock, though I also removed the one in the dock but that did not seem to resolve it). Lo and behold, I can now run any game as long as I like without incident. Before Tiny Tower would freeze up anytime it hadn't been rebooted in the past hour or so. Now it's very very stable. I will be running a chkdsk from a pc later on the microsd card, but for now it's ROCK solid. I can't remember the last time it was this solid. Will keep you guys updated, and let me know your findings as well. May just be a fluke on my card.
If your prime is crashing (3D games or otherwise) try removing microsd card!

mines only occurred very randomly only using stock or ICS+ browser. It would freeze then eventually reboot. Most times if it FC, I just choose wait then browser immediately works. But other times when loading a graphic heavy page, I guess, it would freeze then reboot. I know it wasn't the memory card as I never put one in. And I know it wasn't the..14update as this occurred way before that. It wouldn't happen alot. Just randomly only in stock or ICS+ browser.
I'm testing a .15 beta build now. So far so good. I'm using ICS+ browser n haven't had a FC or freeze n reboot yet. Still need to test more as I just installed it an hour or 2 ago. I think we all will get the official .15 update any day now. Its gotten alot of positive feedback from beta testers. Seemed to fix freeze/reboot some experienced since .14 update. I'm not experiencing the constant random reboots like most of them are. MY issue a lil diffwrent. I'm testing to see if it fixes the freeze/reboot/FC issue that only occurs every once in a while only in stock or ICS+ browser. Never happens during any other type of use.
This does nothing for my repeated reboots and freezes post the latest firmware update but it does seem to do the trick with Shadowgun THD, which had been totally stuck. Not wanting to tempt fate but managed to play an hour of Shadowgun flawlessly with the micro sd card removed. Not an ideal long term solution but hopefully points to where some of the issues lie to help with a proper fix. Thanks.
