[Q] It's the battery issue again! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

hey, so i have ran pretty much every "jelly bean" rom out there for this phone for about 2-2.5 months. maybe less. note sure..
anyway, the battery has been horrible! on every rom.. I have a 2700 mAMP battery, and a regular Samsung battery. I have to use both once a day for this phone.. now I have no idea what is making the phone loose percentage after percentage of battery as fast as it has for me, but everytime i post i get about 0 luck from people that either have the same issue, or just people saying they have heard it a million times. i probably should have put this in the "Q&A" thread, but maybe i forgot. can someone, preferably more than one, help me out here?? i don't get how other people say they have 8 or more hours of screen on time with half the battery left. it just doesn't make since. I am loving the android system. but this could be anything! the apps in the background. the kernel, maybe I didn't clean my cache or something. i can't raise my brightness up to far or it'll drain my battery, jamie in the paranoid thread said he had his batter on 100 percent and had excellent battery. so I'm far from confused here. do I need to get another phone, or what. very much apprentice the help from as many people as possible. I love my phone, but I hate that i have to focus on using two battery a day with this phone.

Same here battery draining pretty quick on all jb ROMs.

Battery usage is highly subjective..
It's nearly impossible to determine a baseline Usage expectancy, simply due to the untold number of variables that drain the battery.
We know the obvious power users ....the display, wifi, data ..
But it gets far more difficult to track the Usage after that.
We know that JB is not optimized for our device, but it's getting better, and until we see a true JB kernel with the rom matched to it, the battery is going to suffer.
Then of course we have the many services that users run, along with countless apps ...
Long story short ....maybe a more stable choice would work better? ?
Like ICS, At least until JB calms down a bit ...
I'm actually running Saurom as I type this ...and my battery life is excellent.
JB just isn't quite there yet ...IMHO ....g

to get better battery turn brightness to lowest usable setting, turn off sync for any non essential apps, turn off soft key lights, flash a kernel that lets you under volt and under clock, try different govonors and io schedulers, turn off gps, put in airplane mode when not using. these should help. keep in mind cell signal strength will also impact battery and 4g will kill it faster then 3g. i am on cm9 stable under clocked to 1.18 undervolt all by 25mv( not much change but i like to be safe) ondemand and sio and get amazing battery life.

What's your screen-on time? 4 hours is the close to the limit on ANY rom for our Notes. You have to make sure it's not some sort of confirmation bias going on here.

thank you so much man! i actually went to at&t and they mentioned that too. they said the kernel im using isn't fully optimized for the phone yet. other words. the phone wont support it. he said basic stock ics is the best thing to do now. he also said. these forums are for phones from Europe as well. not just for AT&T in the us. again, the ROMS these devs are making are not supported for the phone, and is kinda like a mimic of something its not. he said jelly bean was out, but i don't know where to get it. can someone tell me how to install ICS, because when I download it, and use KIES, it installs the system, but never fully completes the process.

Sure...
At the top of the general note section, you will find the "note super everything thread"....
Scroll down to find the ICS info you need...
There are many great ICS roms, and you will find that your phone is "MUCH" better running on the software that was intended for it..
Do the homework in the superthread, and read, read, read......then if you have more questions....just PM me, and we'll get ya up and running....g

Battery life is purely subjective. No two people will have the same experience.
Have you used an app like CPU spy to make sure the phone is going into deep sleep? Rogue apps keeping the phone in a wake lock can seriously affect battery life, but its hard to say if anybody's apps are doing that, because we all use different apps and there's no list of apps that keep a wake lock, so you need to use something like CPU spy to see if you are going to deep sleep when your screen is off.
Related to apps as well, don't use any task killers or constantly kill apps when you exit them. A lot of people think killing apps is necessary when it completely is not. Android, since donut or eclair, manages its RAM very well, so that when a properly written app (ie. It's not keeping a wake lock) is in RAM, it's just in a frozen state not using any CPU cycles. Constantly killing well written apps hurts battery life, because restarting the app fresh is much more processor intensive than pulling a frozen app out of RAM. Plus you don't have to deal with annoying loading/splash screens.
Also, like others have said, using the lowest brightness possible, and turning off sync for any unnecessary apps will help battery life. GPS doesn't matter so long as you don't keep something running that uses it. If an app isn't using GPS, then GPS isn't using battery. I always leave my GPS on and do not notice a difference compared to turning it off. If you're paranoid about GPS leave it off, but it's annoying to have to turn it on every time you want to use an app that requires it. You can also disable location access in most apps like Facebook, twitter, etc where you don't need GPS really, and that will make leaving it on even better. If you don't use GPS much anyways, leave it off.
Like somebody said, your cell signal can greatly affect your performance, so use WiFi whenever possible, and even put a data toggle in your pulldown so you can disable cell data when you don't really need it. WiFi in general uses less battery than cellular data, so I use it whenever possible.
I've also noticed that how you use your screen on time also has a great effect on battery life. When I have extended lengths of constant screen on time where the phone starts heating up and whatnot, I see much less battery life than if I just use my phone here and there intermittently. Long stretches of screen on time stress the processor and battery heating them up and making them less efficient, where as short stretches allow the processor time to stay at a cooler, more efficient temperature. If you game at all on your phone, you've definitely experienced this, as you know that your phone heats up due to the extended lengths of screen on time and heavy processor usage. Gaming is a no-no if you're striving for better battery life.
With following those guidelines, my Note sees about 3.5 screen on time with JB on Gubment Cheeze. I would get around that on ICS as well, and I don't remember what it was on GB. Fellow testers and teammates for Gubment Cheeze have seen up to 4 hours and a little more even on JB, so it's definitely possible to have decent battery life on JB.
It really comes down to your own personal usage.

I was not aware of this info....many thanks for the heads up...I always supposed that since the ram was consumed with applications, that those apps were pulling CPU usage from the device...
that is clearly not the case......g

Yep, no problem. If you go back to a touchwiz based ROM and go into the stock task manager, it shows you what's taking up RAM, as well as the CPU usage of each thing in the list. If the apps are working properly, pretty much everything will show very little to 0% CPU usage, and ones that are using it heavily will even be highlighted in yellow or red depending on their CPU usage %age. Unfortunately aosp based ROMs don't have that task manager, one of the things I miss from touchwiz.
Every time a non-techy friend buys a new android, it seems the overly aggressive sales rep that sold the phone to them 'helped' them get to know the phone and installed a task killer, specifically advanced task killer. I always just uninstall it without telling them and see how long it takes them to notice lol.
It's still useful in certain instances, for example if you have an app that doesn't run well but you still like/need to use, but in general practice android does a much better job of managing itself. Besides, if you have an app that you know runs poorly and hogs your processor in the background, but you still need to use it, with most aosp based ROMs you can set your phone so that long pressing the back button kills the current app, essentially making task killers useless.

This is true. What kind of signal strength do you get where you are at? Does your phone bounce back and forth to lte. I have noticed when i go from a strong signal to weaker signals or band switching a lot, my battery drains rapidly.
Use cpuspy, as mentioned, to verify you do see deep sleep. Also, i find if rooted, that seting the min speed to 192 helps quite a bit.

Battery Usage

First off I want to thank Nitro for Eclipse it is by far the best my phone has run since purchased.
I have noticed tho on .5 that my battery seems to get used up a lot faster. Has anyone else noticed this? I know that Nitro said in his ROM OP that you could change the cpu frequencies in the init.d script. Has this worked for anyone?
If so could you please let me/us know what you did to get better battery usage.
My battery too died really fast when using v5. I adjusted the cpu freq to 216mhz and calibrated the battery. Also tried Overmind's init hack w/ no luck. I have the extended battery and it would need charged after 6 hrs or so. I use my phone a lot but I used to get 11+ hours under similar use..
I recently went back .2.2 where I had better luck w/ battery life. Gonna test this version and hope my battery isn't on its way out.
EDIT: After going back to .2.2 I'm now sitting at 30% with 16+ hrs of similar heavy usage. Nothing against Nitro's v5 but I've had MUCH better battery life on .2.2 Never gave much thought to the reboot "fix".

Someone said something about sleep states being messed up so after you charge your phone reboot. I've been doing it and im at 40% after a day and a half of moderate use

I have stayed on eclipse v .4 and get about 8 hours running at 600mhz.
If only we could get custom kernels. Got 1day 3 hours out of my og Droid at ulv 600mhz

How do you change frequencies? I was trying to change governors but it wouldn't let me
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
The only way I was able to change governers is using the Droid overclock app and installing busybox OR flashing a init.d hack. Not really sure how the app opened up the governors for me, but I know for a fact that init d hack works.

So there is no real fix as of yet. I am not going to reboot my phone after each charge, that is obviously a band aid fix and I actually like to see how long my phone runs (well) without needing a reboot.
I really like 0.5 so I'd rather not go back to 0.2.2 just for the better battery usage.
It cannot be a kernel issue because since GB was released the Kernel never changed and it hasn't been since I flashed Eclipse 0.5 that my battery life has decreased.
It must be something to do with the ROM, I am sure it will be straightened out soon. One of the genius script writers will provide a hack or there will be settings tweak that helps. Until then it is not nearly a deal breaker, I can still use my phone like normal. It is just something I happened to notice now that we have 1% battery level increments. 5% in my case, I'm running TheMuffStuff's Cyan Ice Cream Blur.
I'm Pretty Sure The Kernel Did Change, Kinda The Big Topic With 2nd-init.

Sorry I don't mean to be rude or ignore the fact that rebooting fixes the battery usage just feel it is more of a band aid than a fix.
Mikey, I apologize I didn't realize that the kernel was able to be modified with a locked boot loader. I do realize that 2nd init hijacks certain process within the kernel and allows for modifications I just didn't know that the actual kernel we were running in eclipse .5 differed from the stock GB kernel.
I will be the first to admit that I have a lot to learn when it comes to the Android OS. I am very thankful to those with the knowledge to bring out these phones full potential.
Just Wanna Be Clear I Was Referring That Gingerbread Kernel Is Different From Froyo.
Not Stock Gingerbread To Eclipse Rom.
I Could Be Wrong And That's Fine, Wanted To Be Clear If I'm Wrong.
I never noticed the battery problem 'cause I'm used to rebooting my phone every morning anyway (coming from a long time windows mobile user) that stupid piece of crap got me in that habit, but this phone is fast as all get out. you can hit reboot, go take your morning whiz and it'll be back up and running before you even start peein!
it's like the playstation 3 of smartphones, just be patient and wait for the software to catch up with the hardware.
maybe adjust your usage a little too. turn off all your stupid data-hungry apps. the 3g radio in this thing sucks juice like nobody's business. but you can play games/music/movies all day long in airplane mode.
I've already gotten 7 solid hours of playin music + stupid zombies while traveling. I'll turn my radio on only when I want to be bothered.
it surprises me that even the wifi doesn't kill it like the 3g radio does. if I'm on wifi all day long my battery life is AWESOME. I've even taken out the 3g tweaks from my eclipse.5 and now I have no trouble getting 12+ hours between charges. the absolute worst thing for the battery is music + wifi tether (I like using the phone hooked to my speakers for general music listening 'cause I don't miss any notifications)
the fact of the matter is, these phones will never have good battery life until the radio gets a serious update/overhaul. it seems like it transmits at FULL power constantly even if it's not necessary.
you want battery savings? turn off background data and put it in max batt saver mode. it doesn't make things that much slower and as soon as you wake the phone it reconnects pretty quickly and updates whatever you were missing out on. that and honestly, it's nice to not be notified about every piece of junkmail that reaches my inbox on a daily basis. people can text you just as easily as e-mail, and if they can't respect that, they don't deserve your respect in return.
who even had a cellphone 15 years ago, let alone all this other crap that comes along with "smart" phones. we all got along fine without them before.
come to think of it, I have never had issues with music skipping either, but I don't let my phone frivolously piss away data either. something to think about, but I remember the days when I paid by the MEGABYTE for data service too.

Dunno how others feel but I liked this post.
I recommend juice defender I love to set it to turn off all data while the screen is off. And I set it to turn it on every two hours for a minute to retrieve gmail and such. Has helped save so much battery lately and works great. That way I don't have to mess around with going g into settings to turn off data and on every time I wanna check. I also leave it in my notification bar so I can just pull down and tap and it cuts my data. Also have seen I can set it to turn off and on data when using any app I just haven't configured that setting yet. I have noticed up to 4hrs more battery when I have juice defender enabled .
I agree completely on the radio. Even when I have a very very good signal if im not using wifi and pulling data from 3g my battery has been almost completely drained within a few hours of heavy use just browsing the web. Its crazy how much juice it sucks down.

I do think the battery should be lasting a little.longer than it does tho wit moderate use than it does 4 me

I will definitely check out juice defender. I am by no means complaining about the battery usage at all. My phone still lasts all day with the same amount of use I have always had.
I had just noticed a difference going from Eclipse .2 to .5, and it was even mentioned by Nitro that people may experience a higher battery usage with this rom. I was simply wondering if anyone had applied a script or modified a setting (as stated in OP) that made a difference. I tried to change the cpu values in the script but it didn't make a difference for me. If anyone did make a change please post the change you made and how you made it.
Sounds like rebooting after charging, or using software to modify data usage is what works the best for now.

terrible battery life!

Hi all, I'm new to this part of the xda forums as I had a nexus before, just got the upgrade to the Atrix, rooting, unlocking of bootloader everything went well but I just flashed Aura's from with feux kernel and im getting really really bad battery life, like I'm talking 4-5 hours. There is one process thats really confusing me, its just called "x" and its sitting there taking about 35% battery, my screen is taking 55% battery.
It's getting really annoying as my nexus used to give me about 12 hours and the only reason I moved to the atrix was to get the better battery life that I saw with all my atrix touting friends (they all had 1-2 days battery life) I'm about to flash homebase and see if that fixes it but I don't know whats going on. I have a UK MB860 and I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196747&highlight=t-mobile+root to root. Pleaseee can someone help!
X is the webtop and there is a fix somewhere for that (doesn't completely work). Just flash CM7 beta. Its much better than any other ROM and has the best battery life. Everything except the finger print scanner and webtop work.
Also I had really good battery on the Ying Yang ROM.

I think I might give CM7 a go you know, I loved CM on the nexus, even after it killed the memory chips it was still good! Im going to try it, is it really stable?
EDIT:
since updating to CM7 and Wiping my battery stats I have some how gained 39% battery!

I've had great battery life on the atrix, now I'm getting a good look at the atrix on the 4800mah battery. I'm a heavy user and I could not get over 24 hours. And now I have 59 hours and I have yet to actually see how far I can take it. Cm7 beta. Juicey....
I find that all gingerbread roms have horrible battery life compared to froyo on the atrix. Cm7 battery is worse but the phone is smoother. Faux 1.3ghz kernel has even worse battery.
Regardless of the radio or magical method of resetting the battery state you use.
1:25 screen time and at 47% battery. Been off the charger for 6:15. It will make it through my 10hr shift with about 20% remaining if I'm lucky, usually I just toss it on the charger.
Background data is off, email and social apps are manual sync and wifi is off.

one weird thing I am seeing is the display which is at 0% brightness is using 91% battery
Also the better battery stats app says my actual battery is 91% but the phone is reporting 66% I wiped thenbattery stats but nothing!
please help!

I was just about to post that lol. Also make sure every time you flash a new rom you are at 100% if not that is a sure fire way to cheat yourself out of battery life. I don't know if I'm just one of "the lucky ones" but I easily get over 16+ hours with moderate usage. I'm running CM7 beta with quite a few things frozen.
Ok so I followed the guide to perfection and it didn't improve the battery life one bit! I'm trying hard to find a t-mobile radio I can flash as I have read around it could be my radio that is the culprit and I am also getting rubbish HSDPA readings, I should be getting full bars but since switching to homebase Im only getting one bar.
Using watchdog I have noticed that the Xorg process is using over 50% cpu which does not seem right to be and I believe that because its a linux process Watchdog can't kill it. Is there anyway of fixing this?
1) Uninstall Tango, Facebook and Handcent SMS if any of the three are installed. They are huge battery drainers and you can find less battery hogging substitutes
2) Freeze any unnecessary apps, I believe there is a thread somewhere in the General section that has a pretty decent freeze list (if you flash CM7, you will have very little to freeze but that's good!)
3) Keep brightness down to a minimum when you can, I've noticed kicking the brightness up rather high can be pretty demanding on your battery
4) Set SetCPU Profiles to something like this...
Screen Off 216/216
Charging 1100/216
In Call 456/216
Battery <20% 456/216
Battery <10% 216/216
5) If you have the proper kernel set the CPU govner to power saver.
6) Undervolt, test yours and never apply set on boot unless you are positive it's stable, mine are something like this...
1100 MHz -50mV
1000 MHz -50mV
912 MHz -50mV
750 MHz -50mV
608 MHz -100mV
456 MHz -150mV
216 MHz -200mV
This way when you're phone is idling with the screen off, in a call or low on battery it is undervolting heavily to save maximum amounts of battery
With this setup I can get 30+ hours pretty regularly with moderate-to-heavy usage (weekdays/non-work days), 22-25 hours with more heavy usage (work days) and close to 48 hours with little usage (weekends).
It all depends on your usage and your phone but I have found this setup here to work fairly well.
I am currently on CM7 Beta, stock CM7 radio and stock CM7 kernel, running at 1100/216 when above profile conditions aren't met. 32% been running since 9 am this morning, it is now 3:15 am, today was a long workday.
I can almost guarantee (almost) that its your rom/kernel combination. Had same problem til I changed.

fastboot erase osh
That will nuke your webtop & fix your problem.
I'm now using faux kernel for CM7 and that hasn't improved anything, in fact I think it it has made it worse. It's getting really irretating because using the watch dog app it always says there is one linux process on every rom I use that is clocking at over 50% cpu usage and It won't let me kill it (probably because it's a linux process), its really annoying me because all I want is my phone to work properly but to enjoy the full rooting experience. I know countless amounts of people with atrix's and they get a full day and a bit out of their phone with heavy usage i can't even manage 10 hours!

Watchdog eats battery like a mthrfckr, get away from that. Install BetterBatterStats instead & look for wakelocks. Which linux process are you noticing with that high cpu usage?
How many hours of screen time do you get in those 10 hrs?
Have you tried with a fastboot wipe & internal storage format prior to installing a new rom? Are you using the latest recommended radio for your phone?

Turn background syncing off if you are using that, and get in the habit of doing manual updates.
Too many times (with ANY Android device) people leave background syncing on and it tries sending/receiving data in a weak signal spot when you don't realize it. That's like a hot knife through butter on a battery.
Leave syncing off permanently if possible! That's a huge improvement right there for anyone...

I'd say use Green Power so the phone can update every half hour or hour. It's a smartphone at the end of the day..

System tuner: Battery life, cpu tuning, and more.

I have been messing around with system tuner app for a while now and I really like the program.
I would like to hear from people who have used this app and their results with various tweaks that this app provides.
in the boot settings menu:
1. forcing both CPU's online: this should technically give you a better battery life, since it puts less strain on on cpu at a time, has anyone had a good exprience using this?
2. Boost app loading: anyone had any significant improvement with this?
My own settings:
I usually clock my phone at 1.5 (on demand governor) even though faux's kernel allows 1.7 max. I put max clock for screen off at 384 and conservative governor.
I have Undervolted before but do not see a very significant battery difference so I just left it alone.
I tried out the autokill option of system tuner, I only tried to kill the ghost apps, to refrain from the cpu from having to keep restarting the phone, but this also seems to kill battery life...In my experience any type of task killer however detailed will reduce battery and does not increase performance, unless you're running a poorly written app that just needs to be killed.
I use three other programs to monitor my phone
1. system pannel: very good at finding rogue apps that kill cpu...I highly recommend the pro version, you can get a history of what has used cpu up to a week.
2. Onavo and My data manger which basically monitor my wifi and mobile traffic, Onavo only monitors mobile network traffic and lets you restrict apps to only wifi. however it does not measure wifi use of data. My data manager monitor both wifi and network usage but does not give you any options to do anything with the apps, it basically tells you what program is using data while on wifi and mobile.
If anyone has found a good balance between performance and battery saving, please do share.
Thank you.
I read some other guy also mentioned the all cpus on thing. im not sure but isnt it the same as making both processors work at the same time which leads to phone overheating? I will give it a try though. from what you noticed, do you like it more with both cpu on or is better the way it was?

technically this is how it's supposed to work pic attatched, but I don't know if our roms or even the dual core rom that's out works in this manner, if it did we would be seeing significant battery savings

I have widget locker and havn't had that problem...I just flashed faux's latest kernel and am in the process of re calibrating my battery, it seemed to jump from 100 to 90 in about 10 minutes!!!!!! now I noticed that happening...but I havn't had time to fully replicate it...i need more time..I believe it might have something to do with fauxes kernel, he mentioned that when screen goes off he it puts the phone into a low power consumption mode, but also has something that when you turn it on, is quick to turn on!!! we'll have to wait and see.
If you've been following this thread, just wanted make a quick update...I want to give you my results with system tuner tweaking. Forcing both cores online is a bad idea. It will literally kill your battery in a matter of a couple of hours. ICS will hopefully be different and utilize the cores how they should be, saving some battery and giving the amaze longer battery life!
On the other hand reducing reducing clock frequency on screen off will help in battery life (obviously).

yes still stock rooted, I put the governor on conservative and put the frequency to 384 or around there, while screen is off.
What helps most I found out is turning off all the radios like wifi and network data, (basically putting phone on airplane mode). Instead of dropping down 15 percent in 6 hours it drops like 3 when I turn airplane on. But like I've said before it's unrealistic I'm always recieving google talk, google voice, facebook updates and I have to have both of these on which unfortunately eats a lot of battery.
I keep switching back and forth between faux's kernel and stock and I'm actually finding stock gives me better battery life for some reason. Even though I set the clock speeds on both at 1.5 ghz.

Battery Life
Major battery drain is the screen, when on eats up all the juice, dimming helps a bit
charge source: usb vs AC charge
usb charging takes quite a while, AC charge quicker (~ an hour)
Also, from my observation, usb charged battery runs out quicker than AC charge
Data Connection, Juice defender helps a lot
turn off sync you don't need, like HTC sense

well the problem is its not my screen. It's when the phone is idle, I usually lose about 15 to 20 percent over night. if I turn off the radios it drops down to about 3 to 4 percent overnight....like I said before I can't turn off the radios...I constantly use google voice, google talk, facebook. And they require both a cell connection and a data connection. I hate to pay for more apps...I've already paid for a bunch of apps to control and see my phone's usage of cpu and battery...is the app really worth it? wish they had a lite version

I have juicedefender ultimate, used it for a while actually...the only good use of it is turns off radios all other things when screen is off..all other things are negligible to battery life...I currently don't use it anymore. I tried multiple things/tweaks with it for about two weeks,...NO point lol...I want to be able to get my google talk message and my google voice texts, it annoyed the hell out of me when someone had sent something like 2 hours before and I would just get it when I woke my phone!!! I tried all kinds of things...but the only thing that actually worked was turning off radios during screen off which I don't want...I can't win lol....I can't have my cake and eat it too!!

For what it is worth I am running BulletProof 2.3.1 and last night I took phone off charger at 10:00 PM, alarm goes off at 3:30 snoozing every 15 min until 4:15...Battery was at 100% still. It is now 7:00 AM and battery is at 96%.
This was after flashing back to BP around 8:00 PM.
I've noticed the same type of activity when in Airplane mode. Extremely low power consumption - fantastic.
Is it possible maybe to undervolt the Wifi/BT/Mobile radios? Would that make any difference or am I off base here?

You had something setup wrong then I think.. you can change how often in syncs while the screen is off, the default setting is for it to turn on data for 1 minute every 15 minutes. Most people don't need to know things so bad that they can't work with a 14 minute delay(at worst), and of couse the internet is on while screen is on, when you're actually using it.
I thought I would need to use juice defender, but since I switched to bulletproof, my usage last me an entire day. From 8am till 1am, usually with some to spare. The only tweak I made to cpu was to enable 192mhz, it isn't like there is a performance drop, but it did make a notable difference in battery life.
If I wanted to I could use juice defender to get more than one day out of it, and I keep a spare battery on me in case I really need to use the phone.. but haven't really needed it.

Official Battery Savings Thread*

OK here is the official SGS2 I777 Battery saving thread. I don't mean to be a culprit and post "another battery saving thread", but I am. So get over it. This thread is meant to maintain the battery savings threads, all in one place. INCLUDING: Battery savings tips, philosophies, and other methods of efficiently managing the charge that your battery witholds. Since I searched through basically all of the 17 pages in both the I777 and regular SG2 to collect all this. NOTE: THIS THREAD IS NOT MEANT TO ADDRESS BATTERY DRAIN PROBLEMS OR ANYTHING OF THE LIKE. DO NOT POST YOUR PROBLEMS HERE. This is simply a collection of what I found to be the most essential threads and information regarding efficient use of battery charge and battery savings. I'll update this every few months, or as I see fit. I don't see things changing much since the way a battery works, and our android os will be relatively similar over the years.
I realize that people looking for this information could just go through all the threads like any other xda troll would be the first to point out, but I also recognize the noob community for this phone (I was once there myself) and would like to be helpful in providing it all in one place to prevent others from wasting their time, whether deserving or not

Here is your basic, comprehensive Battery Saving thread:

THE TWO THINGS THAT KILL YOUR BATTERY THE MOST:
Super AMOLED Screen: Now it's all apparent to us at this point that android screens (S-amoled's) kill very large amounts of battery. You will save copious amounts of battery if you do not use your screen as much, hence why half of the people posting their battery stats have screen on like once an hour for half a second. They basically don't use their phones.
Data/Radio: Ever notice that when you put your phone on airplane mode before you go to bed, when you wake up it's only gone down by about 1%? That's because you're not getting any service, and have no data coming in. Believe it or not, the phones hardware is pretty efficient. CPU's don't use very much idle power at all, and I expect that to stay the same, even with quad-core processors coming out. It's mostly the over air things (and screen ) that kill our battery. Data itself uses a **** ton of battery. On a daily basis (And I've tried just about all the roms; CM7,CM9, MIUI (GB and ICS), SammyTW ones, etc.) I use a considerable amount of data. I try to have my data on most of the day since I get facebook notifiations and send/receive MMS's, but on the days where I have it off for a couple hours I start to notice, damn, my battery is still pretty high
EDIT: Using Edge/2G saves a lot of battery if you're someone who needs data on most of the day. I recently switched to instead of intermitedly turning data on and off, just having Edge on all day (for notifications) and then switching to 3G when I needed to browse or use maps, etc. Idle usage of Edge vs. 3G is probably around 40% less battery consumption (my opinion), it works really well for me.
PHILOSOPHIES:
If you want to compare your own battery life with others to get a better idea about things, check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498303&highlight=undervolt
Juice Defender + others: I am a fan of this application. I used to use it for the first couple months I had the phone and it made a significant difference (mostly because of data deactivation). It makes 20-35% difference in savings from having not micro-managed anything yourself to then using the app. There are other variations of JD, GreenPower, Battery Booster, etc.
If you want more information about Undervolting, or the process, please check out:

Fast Dormancy effects the trafficway in which your data makes it to your phone, both effecting the speed at which is arrives, and the battery it consumes while doing so. Check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111581&highlight=fast+dormancy
Underclocking and Overclocking: These are ways of tweaking your CPU usage. Underclocking is known for when you limit the maximum frequency, your CPU can clock to. So in laymans terms, what that transaltes to is your 1.2 GHz (1200 MHz) processor, can be changed to a 0.8 GHz (800 MHz) processor, if you were to underclock it to 800 Mhz. This is helpful to some almost completely dependant on your usage.
More elaborate, drawn out explanation: While your phone is idling, or sitting with the screen off, it is sitting at 200 MHz (lowest default - if you go lower than that your phone can become unstable [screen not turn on, etc.]), so underclocking won't help you improve battery usage much if you just keep your phone off most of the day. Undervolting would help more with that. if you however, find that you play lots of games, or mindless swipe across homescreens all day confused, or perhaps photo editing apps, or other things that use the maximum cpu frequency; then you will find that having your phone underclocked to 800 MHz, forces your cpu to work less during those heavy maintence situations, but in turn, prevents heavy battery drain. What this translates to in daily use: If you play angry birds, your phone's cpu might be jumping up to 1200 MHz (depends on your kernel settings - usually it's set to ondemand, in which case it will do so) during those swipes when the bird flys across the screen. However, that is not a very cpu intensive action, so if you were underclocked to 800 MHz, you probably wouldn't see any difference (lag, stutters) in your game play. However, if you were playing a 3D defense game, or esentially any other 3D game which requires you to scroll around the map, or has many many things on the screen at once (beyond fruit ninja and angry birds), then you would notice a difference in performance due to underclocking. I mention all of this because underclocking will be most effective during those situations, but it can also be the most hindering, in those same situations. All depends on how you're using your phone and what you're trying to achieve, while maintaining a certain level of quality.
Overclocking works the opposite, if you are trying to reach a certain level of performance (you just downloaded a new 3D MMO dungeon defense game and your phone is jittering and laggy during gameplay), beyond your default 200-1200 MHz clocked cpu, you may overclock up to 1600 MHz (some devs don't like you doing it - because it is essentially quite harmful for your cpu if used for a longer period of time), also depending on the kernel (again, devs created them) you may not be able to overclock, but on the majority you can.
To Underclock you will need an app called SetCpu (or equivalent) in order to change your over-underclock rate, as well as the scaling of your kernel (ondemand, performance [max frequency, all the time], conservative, etc.), also some roms have clocking options built in (such as AOKP).
For information regarding Underclocking check out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238580&highlight=underclock

AMOLEDs are supposed to be more energy efficient than LCDs I thought. That being said, I think one problem might be that many users of the former tend to keep their screens very bright because they are such a beauty to look at. I get what I think is good battery life by adjusting the brightness of my screen down when on battery only and by fine-tuning auto brightness settings.
One of the nice things about the S-AMOLED screen is that when it shows blacks, it's not using pixels. Pixels are actually turned off for the blacks. You can get further battery saving by using darker themes and inverted apps. Of course, that's not to everyone's liking. Me, I tend to like darker, tending towards minimalist screens as opposed to bright, busy ones, so it's a win for me.

First, in reading my paragraph I was speaking of JD's helpfulness in relation to not micro-managing (turning off data, etc.) anything yourself. In this case JD helps a lot....
Second, I didn't bash any part of our AMOLED screens, but they use a lot of battery...idk anything about how they compare to other screens, and idc...that has nothing to do with my post. We all have I777's, and that's the way it is, so I'm not too concerned of other screens.
I will say, that in light of reading most of your comments (which are found everywhere) , evidently, that you do at least make a good point, most of the time.

Yes data drains battery. If you are rooted (I hope you are since you are reading this on xda), you should get Droidwall. It's a firewall for your phone which limits certain apps to use network data, wifi data, or neither. Useful if you are also a little bit paranoid :silly:.
Another amazing app I also use is called llama. It is similar to tasker but it's free. This app allows me to set profiles and actions based on location (antenna mast instead of GPS to save battery) and other triggers. Not sure how ICS manages BT and Wifi scanning but those things use to drain my battery under GB so I got into a habit of toggling them on/off. Llama can do it automatically for me because I am lazy or sometimes I forget to.
I think any phone screen can be a big battery drainer if left on long and are set really bright. I have a habit of hitting the power button after I am done using it as opposed to just letting it shut off by itself.

They are more efficient than LCD's, and I made no notion to say they weren't. I simply said that they were one of the two main culprits of battery drain. I'm not saying our phones suck cus they have AMOLED screens, it's actually awesome. I'm just saying, like any other phone, having the screen on lot is going to kill your battery.
Yeah on stock (rooted after a month) I used to use auto-brightness most of the time, and sammy's auto seems a little brighter than necessary by default (so I'd keep it on 40% some days). But after switching around to different rooms (before I started tweaking auto-brightness) having brightness at what I'd actually consider an adequate level, versus a little bit brighter makes a huge difference. When the screen looks just a little too dull in all situations it really takes away from the experience hah
Also, I know black pixels are technically off on AMOLEDS, but I've noticed on many occasion when using in a room with no light on at night (pitch black, essentially) that when rebooting and hitting the yellow triangle screen (mostly black) you can see the black area of the screen. It's not completely black. It's definitely a very real looking black, but it still looks like there's a backlight behind the screen. Is that the case? Can anyone confirm?

While it may not have anything to do with your post, per se, I think it's a good idea for people to be educated about our screens since many *are* coming from the LCD world and some of the rules they're used to don't apply. And some of those rules very definitely have an effect on battery life, like the rendering of blacks that I mentioned above.

That is the case with LED screens. In a mostly black scene, the individual pixels for the black area are not lit, however there is still a backlight lighting the screen itself which you may see bleed through. This is of course assuming the phone LED works at least somewhat similarly to a TV.

Yes I agree with you on that. It is more the manner of criticism which he spoke it that I am not favorable of, not necessarily the information which he shared. Which is why I wrote what I did at the end of my comment.

Ahem....let me try to get his thread back on track.
I agree wih your comments vanillacracker. On a gb rom if I disable auto sync it helps me a lot wih battery life because he signal is really awful at my work. So I guess if the signal is bad it tries to sync amd keeps doing it for a long time whih really drains the battery. Disabling background data helps even more but I like to get my emails so I do not.
Sammy based roms are the best wih auto brightness quickness. Aosp roms are always slow to react. I hate when I step outside and the screen takes for ever to adjust. But the sammy based roms also have high default brightness as you mentioned.
Ps: do not feed the trolls. Just report them.

I will agree with you on most of your points and yes you are correct about the signal, the worse your signal is the more it affects the battery. Also, tasks aokp has the option now to change the reaction speed so if you like aosp but hate the reaction speed that is an option.
How exactly was I trolling? I know you're referring to me, I made a criticism of two points out of the entire thing and he tells me I'm a troll and that I need to take an anti depressant. What exactly did I do wrong?

Ohh alright that makes a lot of sense then. Thanks a lot, that was really helpful for me! Yeah cus in the completely black screen sometimes I can see the little splotches that look like it's where the backlight is squished against the screen or something. I noticed the marks are in a different spot on my current I777 than they were on my old one (replaced cus power button stopped working). Yeah it would make sense that AMOLED's came around the same time LED's started getting more popular in TVs too (few years ago), pretty baller technology for a phone! I'm loving it haha

Way to come back with a personal attack, it's been proven in many cases that JD does not help and if anything hurts battery life. I used to use it and now I don't with no hit on battery. I'm not depressed thank you very much. I reported you for that one. I wasn't saying anything bad or personal but you had to go ahead and do it.

I disagree with you that Juice defender does not improve battery life. I am aware that obviously running an app in the background (Juice defender in this case) uses battery. But if the app is disabling your data (data uses battery..more than the juice defender app uses) then it's not possible for it to not increase battery.....just logic there. Anyway I'm sure there's been reports that say it does and does not increase battery, it's been obvious to me that it does, and it's logical to assume it does (if you know what I'm addressing) too. So I'll say to each their own. I do not wish to argue about things anymore, I will not edit my thread to your liking, you may simply dismiss that tip if you'd like.
I do not care about a report, I'm sure most people see the way I act and understand my reasoning. I probably overreacted a bit to your initial response , I've edited my accords. :cyclops:
BTW, VC, thanks for the compilation. Hopefully it will prove useful to folks!

Dude.....no offense but your first post was pretty disrespectful....hence my comment. However your quoted post was very useful. I believe in one thing...you give respect you get respect.
Now...getting back to the topic....good point about tasks rom....I did try it out but frankly speaking it is still not at par with sammy base roms wih regards to auto brightness. It does rock otherwise.
I am currently on ktoonsezs MIUI port (love that guy. No homo)....and m pretty happy with the auto brightness

If the only thing which is holding you from using aokp is the auto brightness, there is a flashable zip in the fluxxi thread which gives great settings.

OLED screens do not have a backlight. That is one of the things that make them much more power efficient than LCD. The pixels themselves in an OLED display generate light.

[Q] how to get running more efficiently

So I'm looking to try to get my phone running more efficiently. In respect to both battery life and overall running smooth. Honestly my phone just runs like crap... lots of lag (not horrible most times), and battery life lasts me to 5pm every day.
I have a feeling my biggest culprit is the constant running background apps. How the hell do I stop an app from always running? Things like facebook, scoremobile, wechat... and many more. All of these, I turned updates, refresh, notifications, everything possible off. I just want to be able to use the app when I open it. Yet even with turning everything off, they're still using up a ton of RAM and in the running apps list!
So I imagine things like this are my main culprit of poor battery life and performance.
Anything else I can do? Underclock?
Running CM10.1 unofficial P10 about to go p11.
Thanks!
buump?
Try a different kernel perhaps? Either that or play around with governors. Hopefully these can optimise CPU usage.
It might take a while to figure out how to balance CPU power with maximum battery life. It really is just about trial and error.
Biggest battery hog for me is the massive screen, so you could turn down brightness too. Google ways to save battery life on Android and see what the rest of the Internet suggests
Also try the app Wakelock Detector. (I think that's what it's called haha) see what is keeping your processor running and find out ways to stop processes eating your battery when it shouldn't.
Hopefully this helped some
