Short battery - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running omega v27 and for a while now I feel I'm getting really less battery on my S3. I took a few screen shots to show you guys. Is it my fault (by running too many apps etc.) or a genuine issue? I've formatted fully including formating the system partition. I'm running insecure stock kernel and using intsd2ext if that makes any difference. Thanks for the help!

Can you show the screen time? 'Cause i'm runing omega 27 too, with phenomenal kernel...and i had almost the same battery life but, with 4hours 36minutes screen on...o i guess that's good for me...

If your screen on time is around 3 and a half to 4 hours than the batterylife is still considerable but from the pics I can see that your phone doesnt go to deepsleep much, may be thats why your batterylife might be less... Please show the screen on time so we can say something precisely...

Start CWM > advanced > reset battery stat > reboot
Hope this ll help you as it does quite often

You have a media scanner wakelock. Reboot your phone and force close media scanner. If this does not fix it then you may have a corrupt media file somewhere.
Your main wakelock is audio out. This is not an issue if you are actually listening to music on your headphones. If you have not been listening to music then you will need to track down the cause of the wakelock. (Probably an errant application)
Other than that your battery life will depend very much how you use your phone. There are lots of good guides. The main areas you can take control of are screen brightness, data use and syncing, WiFi and Bluetooth, and network (ie use either wcdma only or gsm only as opposed to the auto setting.

You can always change the kernel to another, sometimes it makes a big difference!

My screen on time was quite high, approximately 3 and a half hours

Cpu overheating constantly

Lately I've been having major issues with my processor getting extremely hot. It only warms up when the screen is on. Normally I wouldn't care but it gets hot enough I can barely touch the screen (over 100° F) and results in major battery drain (battery drain doesn't bother me because in using it, but it still seems too high). Does anyone know a few tips or tricks to keep the temp down? Currently I'm running on AOKP and have the default kernel but I also experience the issue with siyah kernel as well. Thanks I will advance B-)

More likely than not you probably have some kind of rogue app running in the background, but without any more information, that's all I can tell you. Try installing BetterBatteryStats for wakelocks, or tell us what apps you have installed, or a screenshot of what's draining your battery.
Did u full wipe before installing the Rom? If not, there's no reason to post this issue until u have. If u already have, then as stated above,u need to find which app is causing the problem. Definitely not a Rom problem, just an fyi for others who may read this.

I also have been having problems with my cpu overheating. And my screen does not want to turn back on and phone reboots into safe mode. And will randomly turn on and off. Any one has any ideal what could be causing it, and is it bad for your phone to go into safe mode.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
No it's not bad for your phone to go into safe mode, but once again, please provide more details!
It's definitely not because I did not wipe... However I will check out better battery stats I didn't think it would be an app causing the over heating because as I said it only occurs when the screen is on. I was thinking it would be more kernel related (voltage levels or governor related). Thanks tho I'll report back with battery stats

I thought getting hot with AOKP was just par for the course, like the weird keyboard bug.
Mine gets pretty hot all the time, with normal use. I full wipe each update, most recently when installing the update on 7/3. I use Fluxxi kernel as is with no oc or voltage changes. Its hot while using wifi or data, and battery life seems normal.
Over the last 13 hours I have 3% time above 800 MHz, 35 seconds of wake lock for network location.

[Q] Screen using 70% of battery

Hi guys,
I'm losing my patience with my S2. I can't put a finger when this started but ive noticed that the screen is taking up an awful lot of battery. Today for example I have taken it off charge 8hours ago and it's down to 14% despite not using it for much (except texts and internet a few times). When I check the battery monitor on settings it says that the screen has used 70% after being on for 1hr 17m, phone idle is 2nd with only 11%. I'm using the Resurrection Remix rom but I only loaded this after the problems started in an attempt to try and fix it.
I've uploaded some screenshots, theirs a sharp drop in the battery as the phone crashed and it seemed to of took a while to find out to charge again. Also Betterbattery only had data up to the point when it rebooted itself.
Thats totally normal.
Im not using Resurrection remix rom so i cannot comment on that,
but my screen is always 60%+.
The only solution is to lower the brightness, and turn off the Touch lights.
Really? It just seems like its using a lot of battery. The brightness is already very low (20-25%).
Seems like how long the battery lasts vary from phone to phone though by the looks of the forum. 15 hours doesn't seem too bad compared to what some people on here are getting anyway.
Mine is using 85%

85% after having used it for 13 minutes? If you want to talk about your screen consuming battery atleast let it run down to around 15-20% before commenting. And it depends on how you use the phone as well. And I dont mean merely in term of screen brightness. If you spend most of the time browsing the web, sending texts, watching videos, etc its pretty much a given your screen will be the highest battery consumer. Try spending most of the time talking on the phone and you will see a difference in the proportion of battery the screen consumes.
Also, the screen is the single biggest I/O interface for any touchscreen device. If that doesnt consume maximum battery, what else will? 60-70% battery consumed by the screen is pretty much the norm, mate

Thanks for the info sir...If I may ask OT if I set my phone to no background processes. Will it also disable the ability of my phone to receive call or txt messages? Thanks for the reply sir.
The phone's battery indicator will take the amount of time the phone has been off the charger and then calculate the amount of time the screen has been on.
For example if the phone has been off the charger 20 minutes and the screen has been on for 15 minutes of those 20 minutes:
15/20 = 0.75
0.75*100 (get to percentage) = 75% screen time
Cheers for the replies. I've just tried turning off sync today and my battery has seriously improved so I'm guessing it's something like Facebook etc that is causing problems with the battery. Nothing seems noticeable on bettebattery app but to be fair I struggle to understand half the stuff the stats talk about.

Yeah..syncing apps tend to drain the battery a lot with wakelocks. EDIT:for apps like your email, switching off the auto-sync option and instead sync on demand helps as the phone doesn't then have to periodically keep waking up and checking for new mails.
Google apps like latitude are another notorious cause of wake locks and eventually battery consumption. If you can do without location services, it'll help with your battery life.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
No offence, but syncing email takes very little battery, especially with the stock email apps.
Syncing such things as Facebook and news apps will cause some battery drain.
Also when flashing new ROMs, it's recommended that you backup anything you need and wipe the SD memories. There can be differences in ROMs and the way things are structured and can cause drain.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Actually I was curious about the SD card as well. I've not wiped the card or the internal memory since I got the phone and its become a bit of a mess. Is it alright to format both of them without causing problems except for the apps which use them?

Well wiping the external SD Card means you will lose your music, photos, videos and any apps saved to it. Connect it you your computer and then back it up. As for internal, not too sure what you will lose. Not too sure why you would wipe them, screen time isn't caused by them. If your battery is draining quickly, download BetterBatteryStats and see if something is causing a kernel wakelock.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
To wipe, use the factory reset (you will have to install your apps again, unless they are backup up by Google, check settibgs) and identify which locations your external and internal sd are, format just those 2 but don't format system!
This has nothing to do with screen time etc but may help the battery drain. It's only a possibility and one which you can try if you like.

My battery consumption by the screen using RR 3.0.6 with DorminManx kernel 5.80 its 62%.
Don't worry
Change rom
Dude, I had the same problem when i switched to different roms, I have found that AOKP and CM9 roms with STOCK kernel are far better than any other roms with siyah kernel, no matter what you change in siyah kernel (undervolt, governors...setcpu etc) they will never be as good as CM9, trust me.
I got bored of changing back to cm9 always, its really the best stock rom.

[Q] Screen High Power Usage

After doing a complete wipe install of mean bean, my battery is still draining about 2%/minute. Now, I realize there is more than likely some other issue, that installing mean bean uncovered or removed the block before.
Questions;
1) is it normal for the screen to be using 60% of the battery power?
2) Is there actually an app that controls the battery usage, and truly kills apps?
- I have tested several, with no noticeable difference in power usage.
Thanks for any advice, for a somewhat novice rooter.
yup
The 60 normal if screens been on a lot. The 2% deal sounds whacked. Have u gone into settings/apps/running to see whats running?
Fixed, I think

I'm not sure what I changed, I limited the processes to only 4 running, that might have helped. The battery still drains faster than before when the screen is on, but not as it was before. I am giving "Easy Battery Saver" a try see if that tells me anything useful, it at least keeps the settings that are applied. With any luck it will keep working until I break it again, lol.

I was having bad drain issues and read some post about location tracking with Google maps. I disabled that and my battery life on MB 3.09 is back to normal which is great.
Funny thing is this happened seemly out of no where but I think there was a recent update to maps. My location tracking has always been on and never seemed to affect battery life before. Go figure.

Battery life very poor ~ 12 hours

I bought a new battery for my S2 thinking that there was some issue with the original battery. But even the new battery does't run beyond 12 hours. I am running wanamlite 14.6 with default kernel. I always keep my 2G on. Account sync is off. Power saving is on. Brightness set to minimum level. Fast dormancy is off. I have also seen that battery dies within a couple of hours on wifi connectivity. Battery usage is mainly by android OS and screen and voice calls.
Please provide suggestions how can I extend battery life to atleast a full day.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Hey
There are plenty of tutorials/guides on how to extend battery life.. all you have to do is...(yepp here is comes) Search
Close apps you don't use such as FB, FB Messenger YouTube etc. If you're on ICS/JB download Greenify. Decrease brightness. Turn off Bluetooth, WiFi, Mobile Data when you don't use it. Use 2G instead of 3G(if you don't need it).

Can anyone explain this behaviour : phone hangs all of a sudden, screen goes off and when I restart my mobile battery is just half of what it was a minute before.
See screenshot attached.
After taking this screenshot battery lasted for hardly 5 minutes.

Hi! I had the same issue just a couple of days ago, it happened with a "alternative chinese" battery.
I think you should check out the quality of the battery you got, cuz with the genuine Sammy battery, everything works okay.

Battery life. ALL tips!

So I am only averaging around 3 hrs of screen on time. I have lux and greenify always active. 4G and wifi on every 15 minutes and have Knock-on turned to off and I still see people getting 5hrs and even some more. What kind of tips do you have?
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
Faulty phone, or some weird app issue, i would factory reset and play around without installing anything. If you still get those numbers, get a new one.
This is the only phone I've ever owned that easily lasts all weekend.
Im at 15 hrs with 2hrs screen and 46 percent left. I drive all day and play music via Bluetooth and it was sunny today so screen was at 80 brighteness.
Get a wakelock app and see if something is draining your battery
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
For some really really weird reason, I get better battery life when everything is enabled. I'm stock not rooted with EVERYTHING enabled, and I mean all the at&t bloat + LG bloat. I even have knock on enabled lol
Right now I have 14h30m of usage and 4h of screen on time, and I still have 40% left. Also I've only been on WiFi for about 2 hours today, the rest is all 4G
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
I would recommend leaving data off cause i had mine on all day and at 38% with 9hours on batteryv3 hours screen on time. Data seems to be sucking the life outta my phone. Oh well.
Screen time is not absolute. Playing games for 3h or watching movies for 3h is comparable to reading a book for 10h, because of a thing called GRAM. Don't let those stats fool you.
Dang maybe you should try enabling everything just for the fun of it lol and I mean absolutely nothing disabled!

Exactly! With RR3 i get 3hrs and a little more. Browsing 7hrs. It depends what are you doing.
My Experience:
1. Greenify
2. Clear RAM (Widget LG)
3. Use Wifi, limiting open 4G data
4. Screen Brightness 50%
But these things only improve a small part. Encourage use a ROM MOD :good:
I'm running cm 10.2 and got 4 hours screen on, 9 1/2 hours up with wifi on all day, got home with 49% battery left. I use greenify and wakelock detector. Maybe run a custom ROM. I prob couldve got 5 maybe 6 hours screen on.
Sent from my LG-VS980 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
you should be using Greenify...
There are alot of apps that are constantly pinging the network that could be causing the extra battery draw
I.E Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, dating apps, Hangouts, Skype, Drive, Box, Dropbox and any other messaging apps that go outside of basic text messaging through the carrier
Edit: Or Tapatalk...i just noticed your using that. Gonna check in every so often for new messages.......I bet you just have a TON of apps running in the background....
I just don't understand. I'll do a factory reset once kit kat comes to Verizon. If it ever does!
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
Oh, and for the Sprint variant, i disabled/froze some LG apps, Sprint apps, and 'VuTalk". Boosted my battery life like crazy....
As long as you have a constant cell signal I think the battery life is great. With my T-Mobile version I don't get nearly as good signal on the days that I work because the phone is using Wifi Calling for the cellular signal. On weekends when I have full strength signal I easily get the high screen on times.
Did a factory reset now actually. Lets see if this fixes anything
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
Carefull with what apps you put back on......
Few games. I have Greenify, xposed, 2x battery, lux and a few other minor apps but none of the rest run in the background.

Auto brightness, change your mobile network to 2G when you're not using data, go to settings > WiFi > advanced and make the WiFi always on *only when it's plugged in* and turn the always scanning option off, go to your Google account in the settings and turn off sync for anything that doesn't need to sync, make sure NFC is disabled, increase the refresh time on any of your social apps, and enjoy your battery.
