Abandoning Sprint for GSM: bootloader & speed questions - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi folks,
In light of Motorola's betrayal with the Tegra2 ICS updates and the fact that Sprint has screwed me MANY times over the years, I would like to switch to a prepaid carrier, preferably T-Mobile.
I have a Photon with the OTA 2.3.5 update and a locked bootloader. Can I flash PRLs/radios or no? I did flash Peetr's stock/CM7 hybrid ROM and it performs much better than the OTA stock 2.3.5 ROM. Thank god; the phone was just about unusable with the stock ROM. I have almost all the same apps installed from backup on peetr's and it's fine.
I am pretty sure that T-Mobile has done a fair amount of their conversion to 1900MHz HSPA+ in my area. Does the phone work well with T-Mo 3G in a 1900MHz enabled area? Is there a better provider? I live in Portland Oregon and I hate Verizon.
Thanks for any help. I did try searching but couldn't find direct answers.

There may be a way but you must read peetr's thread on sbf and signature versions as there are ways some things might be flashable. PRL's pertain more to Sprint and CDMA aspect of phones rather than GSM.
The thread I speak of contains info on ways to flash those files via bootstrap.

Afaik there's been two instances of 2.3.5 photons both ota and shipped to have GSM enabled. They haven't been verified though.

I'm not sure about the Tmo speed question. If they converted, I imagine they're on par or slower than At&t speeds.

A GSM MVNO (Virtual network operator) uses ATTs or T-Mos network, but charges you less for more minutes/data (They say unlimited data, but really presume 2GB/mo)
http://www.mysimplemobile.com/Simple-Mobile-Coverage.aspx
http://www.straighttalksim.com/ (You can choose att or tmo sim after you put in your zip) Try this discount thing to save ten bucks http://slickdeals.net/f/5263806-Straight-Talk-SIM-Cards-4-99-w-FS
GSM is great, it doesn't feel like a cludge, it really is like the phone is more at home and faster on HSPA+ than on that terrible sprint 3G or their failed wimax.

ATT LTE and Atrix 4g

Multiple technical support reps have told me over the phone that Atrix will do LTE (att flavor I guess). Yet I everything I've read contradicts this. Rumor is att will begin launching lte in certain areas june/july. Can anyone offer some clarifications reflgarding the Atrix radio capabilities?

They told me the same thing! when i bought the phone i specifically asked them and they said yes
forget it, they meant hspa+, this phone doesn't have a lte radio, no matter who says anything
HSPA can do up too 14.4mps and thats why they care calling it 4g even though 4g originally was data service of 100mb or better. The Atrix like stated above DOES NOT have the LTE radio no madder what ATT tells you.
Im not even on true HSPA in my area but I do know one thing, ever since the update that unlocked the upload I have seen 6mb down and 1.2mb up. I almost always see between 3-5mb now and I'm not even in a 4g area.
The good thing about HSPA is it uses the same 3g towers and technology so battery is not affected. I guess the verizon guys on LTE are seeing very horrible battery life compared to running 3g. Thats why those Thunderbolts get such bad battery life. We get faster speeds without hurting the battery.

There are multiple versions of HSPA - the Atrix can do 14.4 mbps on download, but other phones can do 7.2 or 21 or even 42 mbps. The Atrix will not support LTE ever. It does not have an LTE modem and is not upgradeable to one. ifixit's teardown showed that the Atrix has a Qualcomm MDM6200, which is not an LTE modem (http://www.qualcomm.com/news/releas...ls-new-roadmap-gobi-connectivity-technologies).
The best download speeds i've found in my area are about 7.1 down. Pretty darn good....not consistent at all though.
It also seems like att is coaching employees to tell customers that the Atrix will do LTE.
Im starting to wonder if they are going to market their hspa+ as a synonym for LTE.
Thanks for the responses and the link. Pretty clear att is continuing to lie about the subject.
If any of you are curious I encourage you to call ATT tech support and ask them about LTE and the Atrix. Post your responses here.

Lets be realistic about this:
HSPA and LTE aren't that far apart from each other in the current state. Theoretically speaking, HSPA should be VERY close to LTE speeds once they fully roll out. HSPA is "4G" like whenever that will be fully rolled out to everyone. I'm sure there are a ton of you that are going to give out all of these statistics and what not to disprove me. The fact is, those numbers are all in "theory" and the fact of the matter is that we will never see those speeds....EVER, unless you live next to a cell tower.
I personally think that if we get 14mb speeds, we're damn good. The point is do we really need all of that speed?...not really...it's not that big of a deal. The phone is pretty bomb, the features are amazing.

I really don't think they are training their employees to say the phone is LTE capable. AT&T knows what the phone can and cannot do (its even printed on the box)
It sounds like you've just spoken with people who either didn't get all the facts or don't know the difference... not everybody is nerdy like us on all this HSPA+ LTE stuff

Motorola Atrix 4G not really a 4G phone?

I have a question if it is possible to flash a radio that will allow the atrix 4g to access the 4g Lte network?? I just heard att is going to be adding their version of the so called 4g lte network to our area and I realize that now that my phone is not a true 4g phone more or less an upgraded version of 3g. Since I was under the impression I could access the lte network and now I know I can't I am wondering if there would be a way to flash a radio that would allow me to access the lte network. Thanks for any information guys and girls!!!

From my understanding the Atrix is a 4g phone but At&t is just now getting there 4g or lte software up and running in some areas so its not the phone its the network that's not 4g
no, theres no LTE radio inside the atrix.
Before the LTE roll out, HSPA+ was considered 4G. The Atrix has HSPA+ therefore "4G". New bill/law is making carriers changing the ways they're advertising 4g now. LTE is the "new" 4G.

Welcome to the world of "we made the same technology a bit faster so we are going to call it 4G so we dont get left in the dust". 4G just means 4th Generation. If it is different enough from prior technology, then it is a new generation, but the various "4G" offerings (LTE, HSPA+, wiMax) are no more compatible than the 3G (EVDO, EDGE) are/were.
The idea behind getting everyone to use the name 4G synonymously with LTE is because that is where everyone is evolving to. They wont be able to pick some transitionary technology and pretend that they are caught up.

Actually, some speeds need to be reached for the carriers/phone makers to call it 4G. These peek speed limits were set by the international telecommunication union (ITU).
" peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 Mbit/s for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users)"
search for 4G on wikipedia for more information
Yea just a little bummed I wont be able to access 4gLTE speeds in my atrix 4g... I was just misinformed when I bought the phone I guess. Goes to show you how much research you hablve to do in order to find out the truth. Is it possible to flash a 4GLTE radio to the atrix or are we "SOL"? our phones definitely don't lack the speed as the atrix still is up there with the brand new phones.

The ITU declared AT&T's HSPA+ as 4G along with T-Mobile's HSPA+ and Verizon's LTE network. Prior to that, not even LTE or Wimax were considered 4G.

Consider this.............Atrix 4G is a cat 10 device. This means capable of 14.4Mbits/s down and 5.76Mbits/s up. The phone is not holding us back, the networks are. If they delivered enough bandwidth and coverage we would be able to utilize these speeds. Because they don't, we are stuck with what they give/throttle us at. In a nutshell, the Atrix is capable of A LOT more speed than our providers allow.
4G means nothing!!
4G doesn't mean anything anymore. None of these networks give the speeds that 4G was supposed to give. LTE Advanced is going to be the game changer in my eyes. http://www.itbusinessedge.com/cm/blogs/weinschenk/like-lte-you-aint-seen-nothin-yet/?cs=49064

There is no hardware for 4G LTE in the Atrix , so its a straight no. What u can see as flashing radio are nothing buy different drivers for the wireless radio modem.

[Q] Making a Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate (SGH-I577) friendlier to T-Mobile USA

So, I have me a Exhilarate that I have unlocked and now use with T-Mobile.
So far, the experience is okay, but I want to make it better.
Thanks to T-Mobile's spectrum refarming efforts, I now have some spotty HSPA+ coverage in most parts of Tampa. Regardless of Samsung's specs page, this device does not support AWS, at least out of the box, so calls drop while travelling unless I force GSM only.
So, given that this device is AT&T's version of the Galaxy S Blaze 4G, here is what I ask:
1. A dump of the radio.img from a Blaze 4G. The device hardware may yet support AWS, but forcing WCDMA 1700 in the ServiceMode menus does nothing at all. The probable loss of LTE support flashing that radio is meaningless for now. Just let me know how it can potentially go wrong beforehand, and what partition to flash/backup.
2. The Wi-Fi calling related files from the ICS. update. Worst case, I have to restore from a nandroid. Not a problem for me. I believe it is an apk and the framework-res.jar, but I could be forgetting a file or two.
By the way, MetroPCS's LTE network shows up in manual network searches as 311660. Forcing LTE B4 in field testing causes the Exhilarate to camp on MetroPCS without service. Screenshots to come of that. Edit: screenshots attached.
Thanks in advance.

Calling GSM users: Net10 Capable?

Thread title says it all. Anyone wish to give me their thoughts on if our Rezounds can play well with Net10 on an aosp rom with global radios?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
i know a lot of users have had great success with Straight Talk. I dont see why you would have any issues with Net10 provided your using a rom that is GSM compatible
In regards to Straight Talk and Net10, can the Rezound get 3g, 4g and/or LTE?

You can get 3G/4G on net 10 if you use the att Nv edit thing in Q&A. Net10 uses the same frequency like att

I tried the Net10 (AT&T SIM) route with my Rezound, best I could get was Edge speeds, voice and text worked fine though. Sorry, but the Rezound just isn't meant for GSM in the US.

Depends which SIM you order, Net10 has AT&T and T-Mobile compatible SIMs available. I tried the NV edit's on my Rezound, no luck and I have an AT&T tower with a quarter mile of my house, direct line of sight.
Thanks guys. I guess I'll look at some Straight Talk plans then. Appreciate it a ton!
I'm on Net10 and it's fine with call quality and mms. But data is terrible. I'm in Houston and seems like AT&t rules out here. But anyways yeah Net10 is alright of your willing to sacrifice 4G

I am going to be brutally honest, This was my idea as well, dump Big Red and their bloated prices and go to a simple $50/month... I am there but it had it's bumps and I had to give up my Rez...
I have tried multiple current ROMs with Net10 and StraightTalk GSM SIM cards (all AT&T) including Infection, Liquid Smooth, CM, Beanstalk, and PAC-MAN, and never been able to get better than Edge 2G speeds (220Kbps rated, actual is MUCH lower), I cannot get HSPA to even connect no matter what I do, tried the NV edits, multiple APN settings, etc. and no luck. I know others have been able to get this work (why would they lie?), but I finally gave up and bought a like new unlocked AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket on eBay, popped in my Net10 SIM, set the APN, and it just works, no LTE but then again I never expected it to work, but HSPA+ works beautifully. (Now, GPS on this device is questionable, but that's a different topic entirely).
Bottom line, Net10 works great on the Rezound as long as all you need is voice, text, and the occasional small email or mms message and you have patience.... but for anything more it is painfully slow. Sending or receiving an mms message on Edge can take several minutes per mesage and browsing the web is virtually impossible without WiFi, much less trying to stream audio or watch or Youtube video.
With it ending up 95% chance being a backup phone, I could sacrifice. Im not one to look at insurance cause I figure if I drop it, it's my own doing. If I brick, it's my own doing. Hardware defects; Manufacturer's warranty.

[Q] proper APN settings for Tmobile? (using unlocked Verizon HTC One)

I switched carriers to cut costs and I live in central Seattle, so with the Tmobile Headquarters next door, I knew coverage wouldn't be an issue. I hear that Seattle is a "refarmed" area and that even non-tmobile phones can get "decent" speeds (obviously not the LTE, but some sort of 3G/4G)
Can someone knowledgeable on the subject tell me what I need to get my phone off of E and onto H?
EDIT: I think I may have got the right APN settings by changing from fast.tmobile to epc.tmobile. the speed seems faster, but it still shows E (which may just be a limitation of the handset not being able to distinguish the 1900 MHtz 2G and 3G. Or out could just be a placebo effect.
but now I found a different issue. I can't call/data simultaneously. if it's not one thing it's another. x_x
Any responses

Pretty much edge is all you can hope to get. the Verizon model does not transfer over to T Mobile really. T Mobile is GSM, Verizon is a CDMA world phone. Verizon simply does not support the bands that T Mobile uses for 3G with one exception, the only way you will get a 3G connection is if you live in an area where T Mobile has a refarmed its 1900 megahertz edge network.
Hello new to the HTC one here unlocked and rooted. I'm currently on the $30 plan with T-Mobile and applied the most current apn for LTE everything works except mms...if anyone know of a solution that'd be awesome I cannot get it to work.. This is the att One unlocked could that have any conflict?
