Less competition is ALWAYS bad for the consumer.

Does Metro PCS have there own towers? Would we gain any service coverage from the purchase?
If not, then I think Sprint should concentrate on their NV upgrades at the moment.

Only if that would mean we get access to their LTE. And as far as I know, they use a different frequency so it would be useless to us.

actually... that would mean it is quite useful for us... the people that decide to buy a Metro phone (god, did I just say that in XDA?) will use the Metro LTE... = more for us!

MetroPCS has terrible reception here in Central Florida. Or at least it was back when I asked people who used it.

A coworker of mine has Metro PCS and almost never has reception when I do. We also live in central Florida

metro pcs must have lots of towers in my state cause i used to have metro before i went with sprint and i kno a few people that still got metro and service is good near me.. im in Rhode Island

Just what sprint needs another company with more LTE coverage or more debt, looks like lose-lose situation, not sure what's worse, guess it would come down to profit per subscriber.

Pretty disappointed with Sprint. Service has degraded in most of my area and prices have continued to go up. This just seems like a poor investment given their current problems.

Of course it's good for us. Any time we get more bandwidth (and man, does sprint need it) is good. And before you say something about less competition... When was the last time you heard about metro competing anywhere... Maybe against cricket.... But we all know they suck

Just left the Verizon Store...

I'm at the mall here where I live. I go into the Verizon store rocking my new EVO 3d. First question they ask me is can I help you. I said I'm just looking. They asked do you have cellphone service now. I replied ...yeah with Sprint. The sales associate said...oh...we can't compete. She then asked me ...what phones do you and your wife have. I said my wife has the EVO 4g and I have the EVO 3D. Again the sales associate said...can't compete again.
I was like wtf...and the bad thing is was that she was the manager. She was like Sprint is the only company that has true unlimited data..and their prices is good as well.
I know it don't mean anything but i just had to post this

Verizon has been more expensive than Sprint.. so has AT&T and they still gain more customers than Sprint does regardless. I doubt there will be a mass exodus of customers.

Yes and I quote
" The first is the U.S. Federal Communication Commission's 2010 decision to eliminate the "Home Market Rule", which prevented carriers from forcing rivals into compulsory roaming agreements in regions they owned spectrum (AT&T voiced its frustration at the time). The elimination means that even though Sprint owns spectrum in these two metropolitan regions, it can refuse to use that spectrum, instead renting it out and relying on compulsory roaming from AT&T."
The second regulatory change is the FCC's 2011 "extended" roaming rules (a link to these rules on the FCC's servers appear to be inaccessible at present), which required carriers to offer high speed broadband roaming to small rivals, as well as voice services. Again this allows Sprint to piggyback off of AT&T's high-speed LTE network in these metro regions."
How else should take this?

You can aready roam on different networks, from my understanding its full time roaming. But I do not know that's why I asked
Sent from my PG86100 using Xparent Red Tapatalk
they ARE NOT selling contracts at&t! they are using at&t's network as their cellular backbone in those cities. same thing as roaming onto a verizon network.
how can they do it? more than likely they will be placing the proper equipment on already established at&t towers. same as the local telco hanging copper on power poles.
For god's sake, find yourself some cozy place to discuss Sprint services other than this forum section. Jesus, E3D isn't only a Sprint product, FYI, there is GSM version, and they sell it all over the world, you know, and it's pretty popular.
Yea I know theirs a gsm one, and at&t ppl can talk about at&t if they want.

Isn't it kinda semantics? Their using laws to make at&t let their customers onto at&t full time network, I am sure sprint has 2 pay at&t for this, so they are basically selling contracts 2 at&t against at&ts will.

ok. so using your logic, sprint sold your contract to verizion long ago because everytime you roam you are most likely on their tower. so, are you a sprint or verizon customer? its just semantics.
no that's different (at least a lil) because I am usually NOT roaming.
If this is done then you will essentially be roaming all the time, on at&t, against their will.
Sent from my PG86100 using Xparent Blue Tapatalk
So what's the problem. You still pay the Sprint rate and you still have service. Who cares about this other than AT&T

Sent from my PG86100 using Xparent Blue Tapatalk
I live in northern WV. The towers in this area are owned by Ntelos. My phone shows 3g signal just like it would anywhere else. I get service just like I would anywhere else. These roaming contracts are nothing new, and you probably use other carrier's towers every day, but you don't even know it.
Roaming contracts r not new no.
But as far as I have read doing it for a whole city of any size is.
Sent from my PG86100 using Xparent Blue Tapatalk
What is your reading comprehension level?
Sprint is, and I quote from the article, "force AT&T to sell it roaming." Basically whats going is that Sprint left that area and is using AT&T's network to provide service for their customers there. They can do this by two regulations in place that put AT&T in a corner, forcing them to sell them roaming.
No where in the article does it talk about contracts.

Data speeds - thinking of switching from AT&T

Is there anyone who lives in upstate NY that can share how there data speeds are? I bought a One X on AT&T and am seriously thinking of switching to Sprint. We can't even root our phones let alone unlock the bootloader. I'm just worried about Sprint's data speeds. All the tech sites trash it. Thanks.
Depends where you live. Were I live Sprint is the fastest of the big carrier's. I average 2.2mbps. Att here is just awful with limited signal.

This! They do! Sprint is slow, very very slow. Here in Colorado it is abysmal.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Pretty hit or miss, it can be pretty decent or downright horrible. At work I get around 1.3mbps or near 2, but at home and a lot of other places it's painfully slow. I just ran the speedtest app and I averaged ~120kbps down, 200kbps up and 250 ping...
I think it's safe to say that you will get MUCH worse data speeds than what you're currently getting. Your signal strength should be on par though, and you won't have as many drop calls.
Besides what the fanboys here tell you, it's pretty generally accepted that sprint's data speeds are absolutely horrendous. I've never been to NY so I can't say this with 100% accuracy but it is a pretty darn safe assumption.
I'm in Houston which is one of sprints biggest markets and even here just about everywhere I go the speeds are terrible. Not as bad as some people who get like .1kbs and .2 but they are still waaay below 1mps.
There have been small pockets where I get 1-2mbps but those are soo inconsistent that it's not even practical

Where do you live, Rochester? Speeds in Buffalo vary, that's the best I can tell you. My EVO 3D got significantly better speeds than my EVO LTE does. I'm just hoping that will change after an update or two. Rochester and Syracuse got WiMax pretty quickly though so I would imagine LTE isn't too far away.

I mean you might see some improvement from those little upgrades but it will be nothing like what NetworkVision upgrades are bringing...B/c they have so many of the sites labeled for the bundled upgrade before NV its tough to distinguish the two....and thats IF they started listing some of the things involved with NV on that site...which has not been the case thus far at all...
I've been checking this site since I got my Photon back in October, it's said I have had speed updates at the towers in my city in the coming 6 months, for the past 9 months.
Only thing it says that has occured was a voice capacity upgrade on a tower that I would guess is rarely even used, it's down a pretty rural stretch of road and there are other closer towers to the more populated areas, unless it was just unusable, not sure why they even bothered with that one.

Idk man. The unlimited 4G at T-Mobile looks nice when mine's up. Although, I'm trying to be hopeful that it will somehow encourage Verizon to rethink their stance because in terms of coverage in my area, no one comes close.
If you want to keep your unlimited plan just don't upgrade through Verizon. You can usually buy the newer phones on their networks for around $200 - $300 on eBay, swappa, craigslist, or amazon. Just pick up whatever phone you want and walk into Verizon and request a sim for the phone or have then program it.

Sprint can't throttle you because if they slowed it down any more, it wouldnt even load the play store. It already took long enough to do that when I had sprint. I loved sprints customer service but their data network is awful, not to mention it will take them forever to roll out 4g. Verizon might cost more per month but it's worth it. Sprint has unlimited because their 3g is so slow you can't use a lot of data and their WiMAX is almost nonexistent unless you live in huge cities. Just warning you guys.

I never had a phone on att that worked worth a damn (iPhone back when I didn't know how truely evil apple was) on 3g but I have seen others on att do well on 3g. But 3g works well for me on Verizon. I use it all the time since it doesn't hog battery like 4g which is great in my area. But when I'm running a speestest on 3g with my buddy and his HTC evo 3d next to me and I pull almost 2.0mbps down and 1 up and he barely pulls a .5 down and .1 up with his 400ms ping, Verizon's 3g is the **** lol. But you are right att 3g is better, their 4g is garbage through. Everyone i know barely pulls 7-8 down on att 4g while I'm flying by them at 40mbps while streaming Pandora in the background
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
Yea I mean if atts service didn't literally make me mad, I would still use them just for the phones.. Verizon's is the only one I've had that I actually notice how good it is. The phones and the lock down aren't that great that ¦~\ but service is first and foremost. Plus on LTE I've never had lower than 11 down and 2 up (its usually over 15 and under 40 up, with over 5 down) and I've been across states down south in 4G areas... ATT and TMO and Sprint don't compare in places Ive been down here. Plus my 3G speeds are as fast and their 4G pretty often and that's unacceptable to me.

We can thank the bastards that have usenet accounts and use 50-100+gb per month for that one. It really is useless, they probably just have one for the sole purpose of racking up as much data as possible.

I don't really think that's the reason... But I'm sure they considered that as well... I think it's because they own so much spectrum that they can increase the price of whatever they want and people will pay for it... Plus ATT started the teird data garbage. Verizon followed a year later... Then Verizon started the share plan garbage.. now ATT has followed that. It's all about money. Data used to be a lot cheaper once upon a time, but not as good persay.. Personally I think they should still have unlimited 4G and capped 3G or vice versa... Idk though... Meh it is what it is.
