it's been a while since ive installed mean rom, but are you s on or s off
usually you want to wipe system data and dalvik cache before you flash
also make sure you're on a supported firmware. flashing is easier on sense roms

Its s on n the vid didnt say to wipe anything before I flashed it n my hboot is 1.58 im trying to unroot it now but its taking forever to download the factory restore which I locked it back now just to restore to the factory settings I also ics on it to before I flashed it I wonder if thats a problem as well

Did you flash the boot.img in fastboot? You need to do that with s-on.
use 4EXT recovery as it has the smartflash option. saves you the trouble of flashing boot.img.
what i would really recommend is getting s-off. Check out this great guide by ramjet73

You need to get back into recovery so you can restore a backup or a rom, If you are S-ON like me you will have problems with CWM, you need to use 4EXT recovery, the "smart flash" options works very well on S-ON devices

Need help to get root

I got my Evo 3d off Craigslist this morning and i love it. Traded my Evo 4g plus cash for it and i couldnt be happier. I was very successful in rooting the 4g amd never had any problems that i can think of and im hoping the same goes for the 3d.
Anyways ive been reading and reading on how to root it, get s-off so i can install a recovery and them flash a rom and kernel. Ive managed to confuse myself because it seems that if you root it one way, you may not be able tp fash custom kernels and if you use another method to root it, your more than like to have all sorts of problems.
Basicall i need help and if someone could post a link to show me best method on how to root, s-off, install custom recovery, and install a rom on the 3d it would be greatly appreciated.
I have Sprint (cdma) Android 2.3.4. Software # 2.08.651.2 hboot 1.5, baseband 0.97.10.0808

I ended up goin a different route by using the HTC unlcock bootloader and that was suscessful. I still have s on and I think I'm gonna keep it that way for now but I need to install a custom recovery.
I've tried setting up sdk all morning and can't get the cmd to recognize adbas an interal or external command. Not sure what exactly it is that in doing wrong.
I wanting to know if there'sa way to install my first custom recovery thru the bootloader in my phone without using my computer so I can flash the su.zip and get this thing rooted. Thanks

The twrp recovery has a method to flash that recovery without a computer by downloading it as a zip and naming it properly. See their site for detail.
I still recommend s-off since it is easier to flash Roms and the ics Roms tend to bootloop with s-on.

I dowloaded and renamed it to PC86100IMG.zip then went to bootloader, it read the zip but said "update fail, main version older!" Have any idea as to why its saying that?

I was finally able to get adb recognized but when I type adb reboot bootloader it gets into the bootloader just fine but when i type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img it "fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external demand"
I'm using jtniggles unlock hboot 1.5, twrp recovery, root ,flash

It looks like you renamed it to the wrong thing. If you downloaded TWRP 2.2.0 zip, it must be renamed PG86IMG.zip on the root of the sd card. Then when you update in bootloader, it should work.

Hmmm... Does your phone boot? If so, you could download 4ext (see my signature) and install their app. Then it will push the custom recovery for you. I use 4ext myself anyway.
I tried using their app already and it won't let me since I don't have root

Just wanted to give you a thanks again for all your help. I was finally able to figure out why adb wasn't working. Once thaat was fixed, I installed twrp recovery and flashed Su.then did the wire trick which me VERY nervous but it worked and got S-Off after a couple tries and I then installed 4ext recovery from which I understand is the best recovery available. Thanks again!

Flashing AOKP/AOSP without s-off

Can someone possibly give those of us who aren't s-off the steps to flash either of these roms. Any help is greatly appreciated guys.

I would assume the same way as other roms except after you install the rom, flash gapps as well. Then flash boot.img in fastboot
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
Would that cover the kernel as well? I ask because dmeadows says it requires s-off and alludes to ways to do it s-on but didn't give specifics. I'm on my phone only with the XDA app so searching isn't any simple task
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
Yes. It should work like any other rom. I also recommend you s-off soon if you plan on doing it at all before the ota comes out. It saves a lot of headache

I'm HTC unlocked, just haven't been around a pc long enough since I did that to s-off yet.

How to install without S-OFF:
1) Make sure you are on a currently rooted rom w/ htc dev unlock
2) Run the S-OFF Utility
3) Reflash recovery & fix sd card
4) Install ROM as instructed
lol, pull the boot image from the rom.zip & flash it in fastboot
What con said will work... if you want to know what you are actually doing with some more in-depth instructions then check out this post over at androidforums.com:

Um I'd say so, what he's saying is just a off already its really not difficult at all and it makes flashing roms so much easier and you'll never boot loop because of a PH98IMG again!

I know it is a simple task, except when you are a newbie and get errors you don't know how to fix because you have no idea what they means. I have tried so many times to s-off and always get errors (I don't even remember what they were). So I am still s-on, not because I choose to, but because it does not work for me. I am not very tecchie , I just know how to follow the instructions to root. So I unlocked, my bootloader, and am flashing different roms. But when the instructions are very generic, with the assumption that everyone knows the technical terms and process, some people like me stay behind and remain s-on, even though they would like to get s-off.
The instructions for s-off are as simple as I've ever seen something like this made. Totally step-by-step. You only have to run controlbear and follow the instructions. The only tough part is the wire trick, and they have a video showing exactly how to do it.
My biggest problem in doing it was the wire trick. I tried wire from cat5 and failed repeatedly. I ended up using a piece of coax and got it to work almost immediately.
I flashed CM9 and AOKP the same exact way as I would any other rom with S-ON. Wipe, flash, fast boot boot.img (I just use the resound all in one tool to flash the kernel because it has the built in commands)

I don't have gsm.
Maybe you need hboot 1.5* that was on your other phone.
Smartflash is for s on
I would recommend using 4ext though
I would suggest changing your hboot
Reboot to recovery
Wipe all partitions except sd
Reboot recovery
Wipe all partitions again
Flash Rom
Reboot
If it still boot loops,
Then fastboot flash boot boot.IMG
Good luck

I managed to make my phone ok again, using a ruu. I think this is the best chance, relock if you are s-on unlocked, flash the ruu via fastboot, and the just use the htc unlock method to gain unlock bootloader and root... It was a log operation...it takes a lot of time ..but well, it worth it. My phone is now ok. You could give this a try. Search the forum on how to revert back to stock rom using a ruu.

There is no need to relock, and get s on.
You can run ruu through bootloader as a pg86img.zip, and retain s off.
That will give you all stock, but s off
However you need to get the Rom.zip from ruu and rename it first

Boot loop after flashing ROM

So I have my friend's amaze in my hands right now, which I rooted and unlocked myself while still S-On. It was on Gingerbread previously, and the recovery is 4ext. I tried flashing CM10.1 on it, but it miserably failed to get past the lockscreen. Bootlooping since then. I learnt that S-On users have to flash kernel manually. Did that, booted to recovery, formatted everything(except for boot), flashed ROM again. Said that Recovery is Safe Mode. Don't know what it is, since I'm a CWM fanboy. Have run out of ideas, as well as battery(though taking care of it). Need ideas and solutions...

something easy

Okay I've just about reached the edge of my patience. I've tried installing roms and updating my recovery. This is like my final resort. Is there an update.zip or something I can flash like a PGI etc whatever that will give me a stock Rom, hopefully rooted, or something. I updated my EVO 3D as far as I could before rooting my phone. I have s on and unlocked hboot. Is there anything anyone can do? I'm just trying to update my prl and profile...
Where are you stuck?

Do you have a recovery installed?
To update your prl and profile you just need to be on a stock ROM.

I have hboot 1.58, I have the most recent 4ext touch recovery installed. Everytime I try and install a Rom it gets stuck on the HTC startup screen. It won't load past that. I have viper3D 1.6.3 installed, and the only Rom I've gotten to work besides that was last resort. Hell butterz won't even work. I tried installing stock Rom and get the same result...I wanna cry...
All I can say is make sure you wipe all partitions and make sure you have smartflash enabled in 4ext.
You can also try flashing the boot.IMG through fastboot after you've flashed the ROM. And stick with butterz, it definitely works with hboot 1.58.
