Screen smashed - need to get pictures out - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone
My phone screen is completely smashed but it appears that the phone can still turn on. I've connected it to the laptop and it seems to connect (installing driver, etc) but it doesnt come up on windows explorer. Presumably because the phone is encrypt + PIN locked. I tried tapping randomly on the phone screen but my guess is that it is not registering but even if it is it would be impossible to get the right decryption code in.
1. Is there a way to display the screen output either on TV / Monitor / Computer ?
2. Even better can I get the display replicated on the laptop with a USB connection and navigate through that
I suspect the answer to all of this is no and I just have accept the photos are gone. Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks for reading

Mini hdmi. If your screen is unresponsive though there isn't much point.
Sent from Jelly Fuelled SGS2

Screen is smashed pretty bad though - don't think it is going to work. Will the mini hdmi work without the phone turn on pass the decryption password stage. Thanks for your help

Really unsure. I use cm10 so tv out is unsupported but the mini hdmi cables can be picked up on ebay pretty cheap.

theres not much you can do if you got a pin or screen security.did you enable usb debugging?

Do full wipe try to look into pictures of recovery.
Send form Galaxy S2. Using XDA Premium

If you had USB debugging enabled, then you can easily use ADB to copy out your files

Paulius7 : what do you mean by full wipe - I can't see anything on the screen at the moment
Jokesy: The phone is probably stuck at the password to decrypt in which case I suspect adb wouldn't work. I haven't used that before but might give it a go
Thanks for all the suggestions

We can still access adb via CWM recovery

I said. You can look into pictures if you can reach CWM(recovery mode)
Full wipe-Is Clean everything but not pictures

Paulius7 : The screen is smashed - so I can't really get into CWM - unless I do it blindly and then guess the number of clicks to eventually do full wipe. But I don't understand how full wipe can help "Do full wipe try to look into pictures of recovery. "
Jokesy: I installed resurrection remix - don't know if USB debug is enabled by default. Either way I'm going to download the android sdk and give it ago and see .

ICS or Jelly bean?

also its ICS

Somehow my previous entry didn't stick.
So .. the good news is usb debug is on. Downloaded android sdk and java. I'm new at this and this is what happened
adb devices - found the phone
adb shell - got in with root
ls /sdcard/ - empty! presumably due to the encryption or PIN
tried it on the new replacement S3
ls /sdcard/ - all the files came out
any ideas ? I appreciate your help Jokesy and we have seen progress although I accept that the chance of reaching our end point still remains low

no that's because /sdcard is not mounted.
follow this tutorial
Boot to recovery, then follow these steps:
1. Connect your device to your pc
2. Open command prompt from Adb folder. (hold shift key, then right click on a blank space, select open command window here)
3. #check if your device is connected via adb by typing in the command window:
adb devices
4. adb shell
5. mount sdcard
6. ## check the directories of the sdcard just to be sure by typing:
ls /sdcard
7. exit
8. adb pull /sdcard \mysdcard
wait for the process to finish
Check you C: drive for a folder named "mysdcard". all the files and folders in your internal storage will be there.
If you face any errors, let me know
Good luck

doesn't seem to work
tried mount sdcard and mount /sdcard and mount /sdcard/
it says mount:can't read 'etc/fstab': No such file or directory

probably not earlier. i've tried again - blindly getting into recovery - and i think i did as windows then say installing adb driver - but now when you do "ls" there is no sdcard. tried mount sdcard and the same error message

How to remove Enterprise Enrolment from Acer C720 (and other chromebooks) [GUIDE]

Stuck with a enterprise managed Chromebook bought second hand and unable to remove it? Here is how to 'Remove Enterprise Enrollment' from Acer C720 Chromebook (and will work for others also)
The procedure is as follows (for a Acer C 720 Chromebook) however it is the exact same for most other models the only differing part is location of the read/write screw.
Step 1: Turn off Chromebook, unplug and remove all the screws from the base.
Step 2: Remove the base off and locate the read/write protection screw
Here it is on the C720 at location 7:

}
Step 3: Screw the base on with one screw (because there is a pressure switch that won't let you start it up without having the base on)
Step 4: Plug in and go into Recovery mode (Hold Esc + Reload and press the power key). Release keys when you see the screen light up.
You'll see "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" screen
Step 5: Press Ctrl + D then enter
You'll see "Chrome OS verification is turned off"
Step 6: Press Ctrl + D and the CB will restart into developer mode.
Note: If it tells you administrator has disabled developer mode perform a hard reset by unplugging the battery internally in the device, disconnecting the power and holding down the power button for 60 seconds.
Step 7: Once in developer mode (it'll give you a warning screen then continue to boot up as usual after a few beeps) Press the keys Ctrl+Alt+-> (F2) to launch terminal
Step 8: Enter the following commands:
chronos
sudo su
vpd -l (display serial number and device info)
vpd -s “serial_number”=”0000000000X” (write serial #, can replace 0000000000X with anything you like) must be all CAPS and numbers.
(takes about 15 seconds)
vpd -l (to check change is successful as it doesn't give you any confirmation)
Step 9: Reassemble with all screws incl read/write. Reboot and turn OS verification back on.
Step 10: Enjoy your non enterprise enrolled C720 (or other) chromebook.
Step ?: (optional if you are getting error flashromPartialWrite() clean the contacts that were under the screw with isopropyl alcohol or meths to make sure there is no continuity between the points from wear.

I'm going to answer this a bit late in case anyone else has this question...
The R/W screw needs to be off until you are ready to put your laptop back together. (after all, you want to be able to write to bios and the screw in place will prevent this)
Doesn't work
hOW CAN YOU REMOVE THE ENTERPRISE ENROLLMENT FROM AN ACER C910
How do you do that on a c730
Version 5.4
Here I am in 2017 will be trying this on a c740 in the near future. Thank you for the guide
is this possible on a hp chromebook 11 g4, if so wher eis the read/write screw located?
I cant't get the administrator has disabled developer mode page. I have tried removing the battery as suggested and had no success.
Same!! Trying soo hard to find a solution
So, I have a Toshiba Chromebook 2. I found it has 2 screws for write protection. Removed them both, no change, I still get the developer mode disabled by the administrator message. Can`t do anything on it. Is there a custom OS I can install over the existing one so I can at least get developer mode enabled?
I have an Acer C731. I opened it up and tried to do a hard reset by unplugging the battery, with no luck. As soon as the Chromebook was connected to Wi-Fi it enrolled under administration. I also was not able to locate the R/W screw in this particular model. Help please?

Yes on my Asus CN60 chromebox, the r/w screw is screwed onto the motherboard, onto a solder pad that is a semi-circle split into two quadrants. The presence of the screw joins the two quadrants to emulate a PC jumper in the closed position.
To open this jumper, simply undo the screw all the way out and keep it safe outside of the box. Once this is done, the boot SSD is r/w, which then allows the developer mode process be able to commit its changes to the boot device.
On my Asus CN60, I think I have cleared the Enterprise enrolement by having the two items present whilst doing the power on with Recovery Button pressed.
- R/W screw removed.
- CMOS battery CR-2025 unplugged.
I am going to keep trialing. If the above has not worked, I am going to try the OP's vpd -s “serial_number”=”0000000000X” method.
ASIDE: I am going to keep a note of the serial number I am overwriting in case this is of any future use.
The reason why I say I think I have removed the enterprise enrolement, is before, I could not login at all. Now, whilst in the developer mode, I can now login using my normal non enterprise login.
I have yet to boot into a normal non developer mode if possible, and see if I can login there.
I've bypassed enterprise enrollment so I can login and use the chromebook normally, but I wasn't able to locate the r/w screw so I can move forward with installing Linux.

Blackphone PrivatOS screen lock bypass

Hello,
New to this forum as is shows it is my first post, and i have a problem with my Blackphone that i hope you guys could help me with it.
I have a Blackphone first generation with PrivatOS with some files on it and locked screen ( forgot the password / pin actually ),i didnt use the phone for a while since i had some problem downloading and purchasing some apps considering the lack of options compatible with the phone when it was first released and prior to opening the Silent Store.
I've tried several methods i found online such as :
Disable your lock screen using custom recovery and “Pattern Password Disable” (SD card needed)
but no success i get the error ( invalid arg ) when i try to flash the zip file on the SD card.
also i wanted to try this method : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2244741
but i am using a Macbook Pro OSX El Capitan 10.11.2
So i ma not sure how to go from here ?
Issue with file manager
Saw i've been trying several method to tackle this problem since i didnt get any reply from the 56 views so far, but i hope someone could explain how to get over this issue i am having trying to apply Method 4 or Method 5 at this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2620456
I was able to download and install all the required applications, from Android SDK and JDK also adb not to forget Android file manager. But i have a problem with the file manager, since i forgot the pin and i am trying to recover some files from the phone it is frustrating to not be able to apply any of these methods because the file manager wont connect the device while it is locked.
Every time i try to type in the command ad devices in Terminal or adb shell i get a return error of device not found, and i guess its because the file manager is not allowing me to do that since the phone is locked.
Any idea how to get over this problem ?
The whole point of that phone is to prevent just what you are trying to do.

Yes indeed i understand which is the dilemma am in, but that is the point of all phonee pin locks and there are methods to bypass them for most of the phones as i could see all over the internet, this one should not be any different i guess.
I even tried to use the password pattern disable file, but i guess when i flash the file from an SD card i guess some kind of error in the header, am assuming the header in the code of the file should be modified to the OS of this particular phone .
From what i could see the only issue here is the different OS on this phone.
Any suggestions ?

You would be amazed. This one and the black berry device. Both are meant to be uncrackable by default. I know one secure phone even prevents anything but charging over usb

I am so far, i really assumed that it is possible to so without the factory reset, but i guess that is the only option.
I still have couple of options that i could think of and maybe try,
1- Modify the Pattern Password Disable .zip in order for it to be compatible with Privat OS, easy to say hard to do, since i have no idea how to start tampering with these files and rewrite the coeds in it.
2- Trying to update the firmware on the phone with an SD card which will bypass the pinlock i guess, as i read in one of the posts on the blackphone support website, as a solution for faulty upgrade through the phone.
BTW i didnt try it, but i could see alot of posts for Blackberry to bypass this sort of problem, non for Black phone specifically
I appreciate your sweft reply and attention, hope you could come up with better ideas !?
Another attempt

So, i had to try using the pattern_password_disable.zip in order to see if it is good, and applying the same instruction here i was not able to unlock my Samsung Trend lite 2.
First i downloaded the file into an sdcard, the zip file and tried to flash the .zip from the recovery mood, but the phone did not find anyfiles on the SDcard, so i tried to apply updates from ADB, and when i wrote the comand as instructed on the phone
PHP:
" ad sideload +filename+ "
i got an error
E: footer is wrong
E: signature verification failed
then the phone tried to open it again and i got the same erorr
after that the phone rebooted into the home screen with the pattern lock, i've tried several random guesses but it didnt unlock. ( i know the right one for this phone ).
And since i realized that my mac got connected to the devices while it was in the recovery mood, and i confirmed that by typing adb devices in terminal and the device showed up, i thought of trying the same with the BlackPhone
but i also got the same error
as shown in the picture.

but when i type adb shell
i get the error, closed
so any idea on what is going on, i just want to understand my mistake here since these instructions should work on the Samsung !?

Route to ROOT an unkonw AndroidTV Devices Technicolor DWI259S/UIW4020ETI (Sapphire)

Hi guys, I'm here to learn something about Android Security System.
I have this Sapphire TV BOX
model: DWI259S / UIW4020ETI / UIW4020ETI2 (Sapphire)
SoC: Broadcom BCM7271
The goal of this post is to understand how I can gain root access on this device
I know how to turn it in recovery mode .
if you are interested you can read this Reddit post from ams_sharif
"You can boot to recovery by switching the unit off ( the black button in the back), then while holding the power button (the one on the side, next to the pair button) turn the set top box on until the recovery shows up."

I tried to flash an update.zip in order to see if I can execute command through any script, but the verification of the signature fails.
I tried to click on "Apply update from USB" (that is adb sideload) , but connecting the tv box on the pc nothing happen, no device found neither with "adb devices"
I tried also to click on "Reboot to bootloader" but "fastboot devices" command return nod devices connected.
My idea was to read the recovery image from fastboot extract it and try to compile my own TWRP
Do you have any suggestions to guide me in the right way?
@element14
When you enter
Code:
adb devices
and don't see an entry listed under the “List of devices” section, then your device isn't connected to PC.
Same is case when you enter
Code:
fastboot devices
Recovery option "Apply update from USB" isn't equal to "adb sideload". This option assumes the Update.Zip you want to flash is located on USB-device connected with your TV box.
With regards to rooting your TV box you can try to flash Chainfire's SuperSu Pro.
BTW: TWRP isn't a recovery image you compile in order to flash, it's merely a touch-enabled replacement for device's Stock Recovery menu as shown by you

The TWRP is an open source project , all the source code is avaiable. But to have it works , you need the original kernel .
I tought , If I can unlock the bootloader I can read the image of the recvoery.img and from it extarct the kernel
Thanks for your answer.
@ element14
did you manage to make the device usebale?
Hello, i am also interested to reset\flash this device but I couldn't find any useful guide, did you manage to root it or flash it, I want to use it as android STB.
As long as you can establish an USB-connection ( read: ADB connection ) then you can root any device's Android OS, otherwise NOT.
Any updates on this topic? It would be great to know if someone was able to root it.

Going to apps list:
- insert usb
- click browse
- go up to internal storage, press ok, click Apps
part 1
- go to apps list, keep usb inserted
- scroll to Files, click it, click open
- if it opens skip to part 2
- else it will crash and show the first time boot
- go to apps list again while keeping usb inserted
- open files again
part 2
- connect a mouse to other USB port, navigate into the USB and into where you placed your APKs
- double click the apk to install it
- on first time install, it will show an error about unknown sources
- click settings on the prompt
- enable all sources shown

Precautions
1. To reduce the risk of version upgrade, it is recommended to back up personal data before upgrading.
2. During the software upgrade process, the temperature of the mobile phone may increase slightly for a short time, and it will quickly return to normal after the upgrade is completed, which is a normal phenomenon.
3. If you encounter any problems during use, please contact the official customer service for feedback or consultation.
The "Rotation" app no longer works for me since this update. Does anyone else have this problem?
Can you elaborate on ""Rotation"?
No more wifi calling option
It seems that after the update, wifi calling is gone. I installed android studio and tried to enable it through the below adb commands, but couldn't get the device to be recognized in recovery mode. Its showing unauthorized in recovery mode.
1) Enable developer options in the phone and enable debugging mode, change to MTP connection
2) adb devices ->its showing the device named attached
3) adb reboot fastboot -> phone is rebooted and shows the language option
4) fastboot reboot recovery -> rebooting into recovery, finished
5) adb devices -> showing unauthorized
Does anyone know how to enter the recovery mode in this phone?

Thanks, Tim-2.0. However, if I use that way to enter recovery mode, I cannot get my device shown up in adb commands.
Using the adb commands to reboot the device and triggered the recovery mode, adb devices show "unauthorized", so I cannot proceed to do the adb shell command.

Uh I see, fair enough..
It seems you were able to boot into fastboot? I cannot even do that. It very briefly does before restarting itself and powering on normally. This flashes up on the screen for about a second but that's it:

Yes, I was able to boot into fastboot through the adb command. I have never seen that screen before. Weird, I thought all Oppo Find N phones are the same because there is only one version - CN one.

Yeah I figured it out, I was using the wrong adb command
Also, I have solved your device not showing up in fastboot problem! It did the same to me.. Folllow this guide and update the fastboot driver
Actually scrap that, I have just remembered that it was an adb / recovery issue. Have you resolved this yet trojan1111?

No, i still haven't been able to solve the problem.
If its happen after update OTA, then you need flash the phone with full file.
PS : You may try factory reset

I tried factory reset already and it didn’t work. I guess there is nothing that can be done because there is nowhere to download the firmware for this phone. Hopefully, the next update will fix this issue.
I’ve seen Firmware is available on ROMdevelopers. BUT it’s required official login to flash.
(Login can get from service Center guy or guy who do remotely)
On another thread, someone was able to download a firmware for the phone.
Find N root
Given the pain of trying to make this phone somewhat functional and something that resembles the level of customisation that I am used to I am thinking I might attempt to root my device. I am pretty sure by doing so I can get Android Auto...
forum.xda-developers.com
Maybe you can take a look on it and download the firmware.
Is there any way to bring wifi calling and volte back ????
I lost them since I updated my device.
Any advice??

Question Severely broken screen - what are my options?

Hello,
My phone felt down from the 6th floor through the elevator shaft, ending up really damaged: broken screen (fully black, top left corner partly chipped off) !
Yet, the phone is not completly dead:
- The alarm keeps ringing at each time I have scheduled (several each morning )
- I'm able to switch off the alarm by by swiping left through the bottom of the screen, or by pressing the on/off button
- when I plug phone to my PC (win10) I can hear the bip-bip typical of a device connection, but nothing else happens
- On a PC on which the phone had never been connected, Windows recognised the phone and installed the drivers, but again Windows doesn't ask me what to do with the phone
- bluetooth seems to be working as the phone is seen as available by other devices
I'm trying to find a solution to access some of the data in my phone. Primarily the DCIM folder.
I would like to reboot in fastboot mode, as I believe I may have USB debugging on.
However I don't seem to be able to switch off the phone or reboot it.
Any idea how I could switch off the phone? Enter fastboot.
Do you think I could access the phone screen using an OTG device plugged to my computer screen via HDMI. If yes, which OTG device should I purchase?
Any other idea?
As a last resort, do you think it is possible to fully ripp-off the phone, get the flash drive and mount it somewhere in a tool that could be pluggin via USB?

Look for force reboot butto combination for your phone usually vol up/down + power button
The mounting option works but its quite advanced and you mmay need schematics or guess work lmao
You really don't want fastboot, you want ADB. Did you have ADB enabled before?
When it's connected to your Windows machines what is it showing? MTP (in File Explorer) or ADB?
Don't wait for Windows to ask questions!
Thank you for your help
When I connect my phone to the PC, there is just the connecting sound ("bip bip"), no ADB, no MTP
Since the phone screen is stuck to black, I don't know what's going on on the phone.
When first using the phone one year ago, I had activated ADB and used it to debloat the phone. I never removed ADB myself on the phone, but maybe it was deactivated (i don't know) after a system update. I would love to be able to check whether adb is still activated
When I type > adb devices in power shell with my OP plugged in, there is no device found.
So I believe this ADB option is off for me
Somehow USB debbugging must have been deactived
Also
Force-reboot doesn't seem to work
It may be that you don't have a Windows driver loaded.
Get UsbView.exe
The left pane should change as you disconnect/reconnect the USB cable.
Find the device that appears and disappears, select it, copy the contents of the right pane and post it here.

OMG, your device is showing as a MIDI interface.
Er, that's not good.
Did you root your device with Magisk? Do you have anything useful on your desktop, boot.img or the Magisk'ed version?
Did you have TWRP recovery or some other?

No, I've never rooted this device. Never even attempted (with this one), so no Magisk, etc. The only "tweak" I did with it was removing some bloatwares using adb (I did this one year ago, right after purchasing it).
A MIDI interface.... I don't know.... But an alarm clock, for sure
If we're talking about the OnePlus Nord 2, that's a MediaTek.
You could go to a cell phone repair place and let them put in a new screen.
You could buy a screen. You don't need to actually install it. You can just connect it to the old cable and leave it flopping.
I don't think that your device has video out (USB Type C alt mode of DP or HDMI or MHL)
You could pull a copy of your boot image using MTK Client.
You could get someone to give you a boot image or a Magisk'ed image.
A small tweak to the boot image would have it come up as ADB or MTP.

Thank you so much for your help.
Changing the screen is not an option, given my phone's current state of destruction... it looks like a miracle the alarm clock still works, and the phone is still responsive to wiping the screen to turn it off
I will have a look at MTK Client, but it may be beyond my skill. Would you have a link to a good tutorial? Also, what would be the "small" tweak needed to the boot image?
They call that format of a phone "candy bar", but that doesn't mean that you should nibble on the corner!
This is the open source (Python) MTK client: https://github.com/bkerler/mtkclient
Hey! Any of you OnePlus Nord2 owners have a boot image to share? A Magisk'ed boot image would be even better.
