or any other hrtf for that matter? I'd like to be able to use this as i watch films on my commute. Are there any media players that offer headphone virtualisation of any sort? Or is the only option to reencode to dolby headphone?
The Samsung Galaxy players I believe
Thanks for the reply. I checked the video player on my galaxy tab 7.7(P6800) and it doesn't seem to have any options relating to this. It also can not decode dts (most of my films have sound in this format) unless I am mistaken.

Yeah that would be an awesome treat. We've got all this processing power nowadays in these new tablets and it would be no problem to have that feature.
I'm a Dolby Headphone evangelist - I tell everyone how much I love that technology.
I've been using DH in my laptop's DVD playback software (like Cyberlink) for probably 7 years and just love it for 5.1 stuff. I have standalone Pioneer DH headphones for my X-Box and also a little JVC DH box (takes optical or stereo input). I always listen to my stereo music over that JVC box because it sounds so much better in that soundspace than regular stereo. Plain old stereo sounds like it comes from the center of your brain, whereas DH stereo sounds like you have speakers on the desk in front of you.

Exactly. I use the the cyberlink plugin for watching films while traveling on my laptop as well and it does a really decent job especially if you have a half decent DAC. I'm not a fan of it with music though. The technology is old and carries a very small overhead for modern devices. Given how many people watch videos on their phones\tablets using headphones while commuting I'm amazed that there isn't more of a push on this. None of the likes of bsplayer or dice player seem to have any form of hrtf. I'm guessing it comes down to licensing with dolby. Sadly we'll probably have to wait for apple to do it for it to become mainstream.
Flowswik it appears you were right, there is a hrtf function in the Samsung Galaxy player. There is a button next to the volume control which will pop up a menu where you can select 5.1. A 2 minute sample of breaking bad (only thing with dolby 5.1 on the tablet, samsung player doesn't stream well over lan) seems to show promise, decent surround effect but the dialog is a little muffled. First impressions are that dolby headphone does a better job but i'll report back once I've had a chance to watch some more content.

Why are there no sound mods for our phone? I set a poll, so please vote. Please use it to motivate a development. Can we get better sq for our EVO? After the new update Beats Audio doesn't sound as good anymore. It is missing the Beats eq profiles. This also happen on both the oneX OTA as well.
I find the sound quality to be just fine on my Evo. You can only get so much out of a device that isn't designed mainly to play music. If I wanted top quality audio, I'd be carrying around a dedicated MP3 player with expensive headphones and a portable amp, but when I want to listen to music on the go or at the gym that's just not realistic.
If you're worried about SQ, never use Beats. It ruins the overall quality of the music. I would suggest tweaking the EQ yourself.

What are some of the better eq out there that works for our phone. I tried DSP with no luck with headphones..
I find sound a bit lacking but I do love bass and the atomic headphones I bought deliver just that, honestly its like there's a tiny amp in my head
Had a Samsung Epic Touch and hell yeah I am satisfied with sound quality. I plugged in to car's aux input and the Beats kicked in and made the rental car stereo sound great. Also the fact that you can now use poweramp and volume+ together and with built in Beats...there are options

A good set of headphones makes a huge difference. I just bought a pair of klipsch reference 1 headphones and the sound is great, especially if you have fairly high bit rate mp3's. Amazon is offering 250kbps songs which sound pretty outstanding.
I definitely recommend atomic head phones, they are relatively cheap and many many reviewers have said they match the performance of a pair of basic $99 shure ear buds. They are designed for bass but you can easily raise the highs and mids to compensate. I tested my pair with some bass heavy music and carefully raised the bass in equalizer and then boosted it in tone and then adjusted virtualizer (stereo expansion) to see how far I can reliably push the drivers and these things are absolutely clear coming from a 320kbps file and power amp. It really really sounds like an amp is in your head. For $30 these things are sick!
I like it so far. The quality is great, but that's coming from a guy who can't really tell the difference.
The new Beats Pill for HTC DROID DNA. Not sure what the cost is, but I'll ask.
The pill costs $200, but I'm sure you could get a lot better portable speaker for a lot less. Beats are known for bad audio quality, ask any expert in audio.

Since they have the name 'Dre' on them, people assume they must be amazing. I've tried my friend's Beats with my own music (The Strokes actually) and it sounded bad. It sounded like the music was being played from a distance. The headphones Samsung included with the GN sound 10 times better imho
Honestly....Beats is the most over rated Audio Brand in the Industry....I am pretty sure the pill will also be one such
Ultra Hyped product which eventually will yield very poor sound quality...
Beats aren't that bad they are just overpriced. Real audiophiles know better
strange thing.. i think its bad sound
I 've been using it for about 2 weeks. It's fine. Just don't expect a $500-800 sound from this or any other no matter how awesome speaker for $200. The Pill is decent IMO. I have Beats Studio too. Maybe you wanna call me Beats fan, IDK... I like the headphones a lot. I know everybody says Beats are overpriced. Maybe, IDK, but they are not bad.
How good does this phone sound with beats audio? Also does the 2.55v driver kick it without the phone being plugged up?
I picked this Logitech bluetooth speaker from Amazon. At the time it was $115 with a $50 giftcard to the Amazon MP3 store. Sound is great.

Actually, the DNA (with the beats turned off) plus Neutron music player doesnt sound half bad on my Shure SE215's. Waiting for my Westone 4's to get here to give it a real test though. I think the amp they put in the phone plus some decent software might do OK, and keep me from carrying a seperate player. Still, not going to be as good as running a headphone amp or a hifiman mp3 player....

Would it be safer to say "Real audiophiles don't listen to MP3 audio period"? I don't make the claim to be one but the HD Tracks I get in flac format top any MP3s I have. The problem gets back to one of storage size.
I keep trying different audio players, Poweramp gives me the best sound. Am I nuts?
A quick question for the Poweramp people, is there anyway to stream a url in poweramp like http://pub3.di.fm:80/di_lounge?
Thanks!
No matter how many I try I always go back to Poweramp
Neutron is a solid competitor to Poweramp. Some say it is much better. Personally I think they are both equally good but with a different sound. I prefer Poweramp for the road but I prefer Neutron alone in my room.

I thought it was just me, but apparently I'm not the only one that can hear the difference. I guess they all do sound the same until you hear poweramp.
I wish I had that EQ across all apps.
I bought both PowerAmp (first) and Neutron (after) so I always have the latest version. Neutron is a huge step forward audio-quality wise IF you activate 64 bit rendering and IF you have decent headphones ( I use Sennheiser's ie8i). Also: both of these are supposed to be used for lossless (FLAC, APE and such) audio playback. If you have only mp3 don't bother, Meridian will do just fine.
P.S> Neutron loses the battle against Power Amp because of the non-intuitive interface.

I also have Sennheiser's ie80. I mostly use mp3 (320 kb) because of the size. 3000 song Flac format would be to big. This is why I use neutron at home.
Btw: Flac or mp3 makes no difference if the recording is not very high quality. At 320kb you won't hear a difference in most rock or popular music.

for me poweramp are Lord of android audio..when i'm on gingerbread i combine with dsp manager. But when i'm use S3 dsp manage not support for ICS n JB.So i'm use siyah kernel audio eq for get more more power for my poweramp.
The first time I heard Power amp, I couldn't believe the difference and what was coming out of my little phone. That just happened because I read about the Wolfsen Dac.
I don't have anything high end at all and could tell the difference in power amp and Winamp. I have some m-audio monitors as my desktop speakers and PA really woke those up, I have crappy Bose in my car and had more mid bass than I have ever heard in my car. Even the cheap Samsung ear buds ran chills down my spine.
I sent Power amp an email the other day and Alex sent me a link about future upgrades.

Hi Kremata,
I dont agree, FLAC its not so big considering how cheap storage is nowadays. But you are right about one thing, if the genuine audio was over compressed, there is hardly any difference between 320 mp3s and FLACs. On the other hand, those who buy audiophile grade headphones or players are prone to be educated listeners and have superior taste in music. I don't want to offend anyone...

Yes storage is cheap, but just an example 1 album Flac =1G(aprox) compare to 120Mb Mp3(320Kb). I have a library of 500 albums so my 64G Sdcard is way over it's head. I use some FLAC (for selected songs) but I really like classic rock so most of my music doesn't need FLAC.

I agree with both sides of the debate..
320 is fine on the phone with let's admit it weak dac compared to pc grade quality..
Just load up a Trance track in both flac and 320. I've done it loads of times.. Flac always wins.. On phone and pc.
If I'm looking to store my flacs on my phone I just convert it to 320.. I use player pro with dsp pack on headphone eq with Siyah and a little fiio e6 if needed with some ath m50's

Strange, most of my FLAC albums have half the ”weight” you say. But, anyway, I dont see the reason to have all my musiv on my microsd, I dont even have the 64Gb type but a 32Gb class 10 Samsung. I keep my music mainly on my laptop and a 2Tb mediaplayer then I refresh the every day playlist on my phone as and when I need it. Much bigger inconvenience for me is the strange incompatibility Samsung has with headphones made for iphone, oppose to HTC phones. Yes, everyone knows the the volume buttons wont work, but Samsung will go further and have erratic problems with my Sennheisers (the second pair and type I have by now) and cant properly answer a phone call, sometimes routes music trough the phone speaker even if headphones are plugged in and so on. Really frustrating, but this is not the topic for that.
Using N6P for the last few days, N6P sound output from the headphone jack is poor, it gets loud but quality is lacking, N6P doesn’t even have the power to drive high efficiency headphones (high sensitivity (dbl/mW or dbl/W) and low impedance (ohms)), I listen on my Triple Fi 10 headphones (Input Sensitivity - 117dB/mW; Impedance - 32 ohms) and the sound quality is disappointing.
I am coming from N6, N6 has very good sound quality from the headphone jack, N6 has the power to drive my Triple Fi 10 and doesn’t need an Amp.
PhoneArena measured the N6 at .98 volts and the 6P is .34 volts, for comparison IP6+ is 1.014 volts
See below comments from Head-fi forum about the poor sound quality:
“The 6P's sound is extremely forward and punchy, but has a real digital grittiness to it. Almost like running through a preamp with the gain wound up too far, with a weird high mid resonance that eventually becomes fatiguing. The weird grit sort of reminds me of my motherboard's onboard Realtek sound, from circa mid-2000s. It feels like the frequency response is not flat at all, I'm expecting tests to show a big peak around high mids to low treble. It's kind of like listening on cheap earbuds.”

I hate to return N6P as I love the phone otherwise, but sound quality is very important to me as I listen to music a lot.
The 6p has so many strong points, wouldn't it be worth using a headphone amp instead of returning the entire thing? Obviously that won't solve audio quality, but investing in an iPod or a walkman isn't too bad when your then able to use IMO the best android phone of 2015...

Bluetooth is not there yet in terms of music quality, I have tried and returned 10 -12 bluetooth headphones in the last year including Jay bird x, they are no match to the good quality wired headsets like my Triple Fi 10, you won’t get any sound stage on Bluetooth headphones.
Sony’s new high resolution Bluetooth headphones are promising but it needs LDAC codec support on the phone, also these headphones are expensive at $399.
I wonder if someday we will see a pair of cans sporting USB-C with an inline Digital to Analog converter. There would be many benefits to this really. I could see a trackpad that supports gestures or scrobbling, etc.
I understand that as for high end audiophile one can spend thousands in the pursuit of audio bliss. But as for my common daily use my 6P with Viper and my JayBird X and Bose sounds is just fine:good::good::good:

If you wish to listen to music "as musicians intended" then you can only get inside their collective heads to hear it. Everything else is influenced and changed by acoustics, recording, engineering and production.

agree that 6p has many strong points, but amp defeats the portability, a premium phone ($700 - 128gb with tax) in 2015 should give a decent sound quality, what's the point of 128gb storage if it can't output decent sound.

you are not so bright, are you?
Why Bluetooth Audio Used To (and Still Largely) Sucks:
The problem with Bluetooth audio has always been digital compression: in order to send your audio to your headphones, you were forced to sacrifice quality. Traditionally, especially on older devices and with older Bluetooth versions, this meant the sound was so badly compressed that the result sounded robotic, buzzy, noisy, and all around awful. Listening to podcasts and spoken word through them wasn't a big deal, but when it came to music, they were just the worst. You got none of the richness or warmth of sound that a pair of wired headphones offers.
if you're the type who really enjoys listening—and I mean actively listening—to music on high-quality headphones, and you use terms like "soundstage" and "frequency response" to judge one pair of headphones over another, you may be disappointed, especially when you compare your wireless listening experience to a wired one.

My comment was not a flame. The difference is that I see all this as impossible for the very reasons I gave. Perhaps Steve Albini can make this clearer: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep05/articles/albini.htm
Hey guys I'm currently looking for a pair of "headphones" for my xperia as it didn't bring one of the box.
I'm currently looking for the STH30 or the Apple Earpods, the main use would be just calling and some random music listening from time to time as I have a pair of quality headphones for that. I need the integrated mic and controls (play/pause and volume), also with audio quality in mind...
I ended up going for the Apple Earpods, not a single regret on them.
worth?
